Expert Review

CARHP Editorial August 13, 2019

The Veloster is powered by a standard 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder producing 275 hp and a similar amount of torque. It is a front wheel drive car with a six-speed manual transmission as an only option. The cabin is well built and spacious with user friendly infotainment system.

The Veloster N will start at $29,885, which greatly undercuts rivals such as Honda Civic Type R and Subaru WRX STI. The hot-hatch segment remains popular which are basically fun to drive versions of basic economy cars.

Engine and Transmission

The Veloster N provides heart-pounding performance with its 2.0-liter direct injection turbocharged engine and puts out 275 hp @ 6000 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque @ 4,700 rpm. Power is routed to the front wheel through an electronic limited-slip differential. The torque vectoring system precisely distributes the power for optimum agility and enhanced handling. The turbo system intercooler is isolated from the condenser and radiator for even more efficient cooling of the intake charge.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with rev-matching. It makes most of the of the engine power and the close-ratio gearshifts are smooth as butter. The Veloster N clutch also utilizes a double-layer facing clutch disc design for increased burst strength and torque capability. The shifts are precise and turbo lag is pretty much nonexistent. The advanced exhaust system works in conjunction with a sound generator to enhance the driving experience for the driver.

All of the rivals are similar in terms of acceleration runs while the Civic Type R is one-tenth of a second quicker than all of them.

Ride and Handling

Developed under ex-BMW M division boss, the Veloster N was honed at Hyundai's Korean R&D at Namyang and Nurburgring-based test center at Germany. The turbocharged engine is over engineered for track-capable front wheel drive hot hatch. The handling is very precise, it points where ever you want to go. The electronically controlled limited slip differential intelligently uses torque vectoring for agility at corners and reduced understeer.

There is a dedicated "N" button on the bottom of the steering wheel, which activates optimal performance setting for spirited driving at the track. You can tailor the driving dynamics with a custom mode which basically alters steering weight, engine power, damper setting, ESC and exhaust sound. The electronically controlled suspension continuously reads the road and adjust the damper firmness for maximum stability and control.

Braking

The intense performance is matched by sheer braking power, the Veloster N is equipped with 13.6 inch rotor in the front and 12.4 inch rotor in the rear. The firm pedal inspires confidence and is easy to modulate. Calipers are painted in bold red color combined with high-performance brakes pads which are engineered exclusively for better heat dissipation.

The traction control uses wheel-speed sensors coupled with ESC algorithms to apply precise braking force to the inside front wheel during spirited cornering.

2019 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Fuel Economy

The Veloster uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that uses Atkinson-Cycle for high efficiency and lower emissions. Fuel economy estimates range from 22 miles per gallon city/28 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. These are pretty good numbers considering it is a performance oriented hot hatch.

While the VW Golf GTI is at the back of the pack in terms of power, it does make up for it somewhat with excellent fuel economy. It's capable of hitting 32 mpg on the highway, and city mileage is rated at a solid 24 mpg. The Veloster N and Civic Type R have similar fuel economies despite of power difference. The Subaru STI is the worst in terms of fuel economy.

2019 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Interior

The Veloster seats four people. The front seats are spacious and comfortable, and they have plenty of bolstering to keep you from sliding around in the seat. The rear seats feel somewhat small, and adults probably won't want to ride in the back for long periods of time- car.usnews

Seating and Comfort

The interior which was inspired by the Kona is almost unchanged but rose to new levels of quality. Like the exterior, the asymmetrical design inside the Veloster is driver-focused. An exclusive N- design front seats have performance oriented bolstering. They are quite comfortable and there is a clear division between the driver's and passenger's sides of the front cabin.

The second row is tight in legroom and headroom for an average adult. Getting in and out of the Veloster is a chore because of the two-plus-one configuration. Following are the addition to N variant when compared to standard veloster.

  • N-design steering wheel and shift knob
  • N-logo door sill plates
  • N-design electroluminescent instrument cluster.

2019 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Exterior

Fresh on the automotive scene is the all-new Hyundai Veloster N  the automaker's highest-performing model yet. Based on the 2nd-generation Veloster, and still boasting the unique asymmetrical two-plus-one-door hatchback configuration, the N variant is visually much more subdued in execution when compared to its Honda rival-Kellybluebook

Dimension and Weight

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster retains a unique two-plus-one door configuration that seats four people. It merges the design appeal of a sports coupe with a handy third door for easier rear-seat access. The LED headlights with the daytime running lights flank an aggressive cascading grille. Functional air splitters add to the visual appeal of the Veloster with a low stance.

The sharp character lines accentuate body sides for an athletic look with a beetle-like roofline, rounding towards the rear fascia. Its lightweight 19-inch alloy wheel with a machined-finish dual-spoke start design clearly differentiates the N models from other models. The back end houses a dual stage N design spoiler with a triangular light. Veloster's high flow dual exhaust with integrated diffuser looks pleasant and impart sporty feel. A contrasting roof is available for the Turbo model as well.

2019 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Competition

Honda Civic Type R

The radical looking Honda Civic Type R impresses like a hatchback. The turbocharged engine is boon which is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Civic has far better interior space when compared with the Veloster. In terms of engine output, the Veloster lacks behind and also in overall performance. If practicality is your concern then go with Civic otherwise the Hyundai Veloster.

The Honda Civic comes in available in a wide variety of body styles. It offers great fuel efficiency and best in class driving dynamics. The Veloster is good, but the Civic is a bit better and it costs about the same. Go with the Honda.

Subaru WRX STI

The Subaru is bigger in dimension than the Veloster N and redesigned a few years ago. WRX also comes with a standard all-wheel drive which is not even an option in the Veloster. The overall performance of the WRX feels underpowered when compared with Hyundai's turbocharged engine. Overall the Veloster N takes the cup here.

Volkswagen Golf GTI

The Golf GTI's 2.0-liter engine produces 220 hp and comes mated to 6-speed manual transmission which is very rewarding with its slick gear shifts. When it comes to the automatic transmission, the GTI's DSG is a better performer than Veloster's 6 speed manual which feels sluggish at lower speeds. The overall performance of the Veloster matches with the Golf. The Hyundai undercuts the Golf GTI in terms of pricing. Competition is neck to neck here but Veloster is better overall package.

2019 Hyundai Veloster N Hatchback Final Verdict

The Hyundai Veloster is a track ready car and needs no further modifications when you hit lap times. This is a terrific car if you are ready to live with a silly door layout. Its performance is exciting because of the turbocharged engine. With a fun-to-drive character as a top priority, Veloster N has been developed to deliver thrilling cornering ability coupled with everyday sports car drivability and race track capability.
