Those who do not adapt to the changes and make improvements are bound to get setbacks and a similar thing is true in the case of the outgoing Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 which belongs to the first generation of the Q50 introduced for 2014. Therefore, INFINITI seriously needs to consider a redesign for the Q50 whose interior and exterior are subpar compared to the fellow opponents in the market. However, there is no official declaration by the INFINITI about any level of the redesign in the upcoming year.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

That said, the RED SPORT 400 is a top-tier trim given on the Q50 lineup which has the 3.0-liter turbo V6 engine as the lower trims but it churns out 100hp and 55 lb-ft of torque more compared to the other trim levels. The Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 also comes with trim-specific athletic features. Furthermore, as a top-ranking trim, there is no shortage of features inside and out. The main competitors of the Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 in the luxury mid-size sedan segment are the bougie Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG C 43, the quirky BMW 3 Series 340i, and the anthemic Acura TLX Type S.

Features
7.0/10

There are basically four trims offered on the Infiniti Q50 where the Red Sport 400 is the top tier trim with unique interior and exterior features which we will discuss in respective sections. There are semi-aniline quilted leather-appointed sport seats with red contrast stitching inside and Exclusive 19-inch aluminum-alloy sport wheels outside. In the list of standard features, you get Front LED fog lights, rear window defroster, dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power sport type front seats, Power sliding tinted glass moonroof, INFINITI Intelligent Key, 16-speaker Bose Performance Series audio system, 16-speaker, power tilt and telescopic steering column, Lane Departure Warning, and security alarm.

We Recommend

Q50 RED SPORT 400 is unique on its own from other trims. It has the same engine as other trims but the power output is higher. Therefore, the Infiniti Q50 sedan RED SPORT 400 is as the name indicates a more athletic trim level you can go for.

2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 Release Date

There is no official announcement that has been made by INFINITI but we expect the 2022 INFINITI Q50 RED SPORT 400 to hit the market at the end of this year.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 will have the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine under the hood. This engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and the power is supplied to rear wheels as standard but you will be able to opt for the AWD for just shy $2000 approximately. Lower trims also have a similar setup, but the engine output is limited to 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. However, the 3.0-liter turbo V6 power plant inside the Q50 RED SPORT 400 puts out 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque which helps in crossing the 60 mph mark from the state of rest in 4.5 seconds. But this performance is average in the competition.

We can’t describe the driving capabilities of the car which has not been launched but the results of the test of 2021 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 are not astonishing. It is true that the Q50 RED SPORT 400 has a more punchy engine compared to the other trim but overall the Q50 is not that fun to ride as compared to fellow competitors. Infiniti’s Drive-by-wire steering system which is also called as Direct Adaptive Steering system is optional. It is much widely discussed but the actual results from it are not as impressive as you would expect. The steering wheel is not very precise and feedback is crappy. The engine is not very well insulated and you can feel the vibration to a certain extent.

There is a clear winner in terms of horsepower which is the Q50 RED SPORT 400 but if you consider the torque, the C-Class AMG C 43 has the highest lb-ft of torque in the competition. Combined with 385 hp and 384 this rival from the Mercedes-Benz reaches 60 mph from a standstill in 4.1 seconds which is 0.4 seconds faster than the Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400. That said, the Acura TLX Type S does the 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds whereas the BMW 3 Series 340i tries to achieve the same goal in 4.4 seconds.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Since there are no upgrades on changes in the powerplant, the 2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 has a fuel economy of 20 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined. Take these figures and couple them with the fuel capacity of 20 gallons, you will get 400 miles of range in the city, 520 miles of range on the highway, and 440 miles of range combined. That said, if you take AWD drivetrain then there will be one MPG less in the city but if other trims’ output is considered with RWD as standard then fuel economy figures will rise by 3 MPG on the highway and one MPG combined. However, if you consider the AWD drivetrain with default output from other trims, you will get 19/27/22 MPG in the city/highway/combined respectively.

The BMW 3 Series 340i is the current topper on the fuel efficiency chart but it has the smallest fuel tank among all sedans mentioned in this article. Compared to the Q50 sedan RED SPORT 400, the 340i returns 3,6, and 4 mpg more in the city, highway, and combined respectively. Meanwhile, AMG C 43 has the highest fuel consumption in the city, and the TLX Type S is the least fuel-efficient sedan on the highway. That said, the biggest fuel storage capacity is provided on the RED SPORT 400.

Interior
5.0/10

The interior design of the 2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 will be simple and dated just like the outgoing model. Still compared to other trims, at least the sporty image of the RED SPORT 400 brings some spice into the bland cabin. Semi-aniline quilted leather-appointed sport seats with red contrast stitching and Unique Dark Chrome interior accents with RED SPORT 400 paddle shifters are some interior features that are limited to the Q50 RED SPORT 400. Black Matte Carbon Fiber trim and Aluminum-accented pedals and footrest are also present inside the cabin. Three-spoke steering wheel and gear shifter knob has leather covering,

The front seats have an 8-way power adjustment with the power lumbar support and manual thigh extension. The rear seats can split into a 40/60 pattern. Keyless entry and ignition, valet key and trunk lockout feature, power tilt, and telescopic steering column, ambient lighting, HomeLink universal transceiver, two 12-volt power outlets, sequential welcome lighting illuminated entry system are some standard cabin features that will be available on the 2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400. Plus, a dual-zone automatic control system comes with auto-recirculation, Plasmacluster air purifier, and grape polyphenol filter. That said, Eco Pedal which resists the accelerator pressure for regulated driving is optional.

The Q50 RED SPORT 400 has the best front row but the airiest second-row belongs to the BMW 3 Series 340i which has the leading headroom and legroom in the competition but if you look at the shoulder room, the biggest one is actually given by the Infiniti. Coming to the cargo/trunk capacity where the top spot is claimed by both, the Acura TLX Type S and the Infiniti Q50 sedan RED SPORT 400. At the same time, the smallest trunk is available on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG C 43. Highlights of the interior features are:

  • Semi-Aniline Quilted Leather-upholstery
  • Heated front sport seats
  • Power tilt and telescopic steering column
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control system
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Enhanced Ambient Lighting
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Remote power windows

How intuitive is the 2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400’s infotainment unit?

The infotainment unit in 2022 Q50 RED SPORT 400 will have the same two touch screen setup. On the upper side, there will be an LCD/VGA 8-inch touchscreen, and on the lower a 7-inch touchscreen. Touch, the control knob, or the steering wheel controls can all be used to control the upper screen.

But in general, the entire dual-screen arrangement is annoying and difficult to use. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, SiriusXM, navigation with lane guidance and 3-d building graphics, wifi hotspot, voice recognition, 16-speaker Bose Performance Series Audio system, Bose Centerpoint simulated surround, and dual in-glass diversity antennas are some standard features. Highlights of the infotainment features include:

  • Two touchscreens
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 16-speaker Bose Performance Series audio system
  • SiriusXM with three months free subscription
  • Navigation system
Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior design of the 2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 will not see many changes. That said, the Q50 RED SPORT 400 is different from other trims as it has Exclusive 19-inch aluminum-alloy sport wheels unlike smaller wheels given on the lower trims and unique Red Sport 400 exhaust tips. It also has black-colored power heated side mirrors with integrated LED turn signal lights. The 2022 Q50 RED SPORT 400 will also have optional trim-specific features such as INFINITY Radiant Grille Emblem and an adaptive front lighting system with auto-leveling headlights.

That said, at the front, you will see a black grille and two body lines on the hood rising from a little distance from the end of the hood and merging with the A-pillars. From the side, there are lots of curves and body side on the upper side profile and on the backside, there are two exhausts that complement the athletic appeal of the Q50 RED SPORT 400. Daytime running lights, LED headlights, front LED fog lights, rain-sensing front windscreen wipers, and Rear window defroster will be some standard exterior elements on the 2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400. It will also have a power sliding tinted glass moonroof with a one-touch auto-open/close, tilt feature, and sliding sunshade for you to enjoy the beautiful blue canvas above your head and UV-reducing solar glass to protect you from harmful UV rays.

The Q50 RED SPORT 400 and fellow rivals have nearly the same curb weight in the range of 3800 lb but the Acura TLX Type S which is the elephant in the competition and has 366 lb more in its account compared to the Infiniti Q50 sedan RED SPORT 400. Curb weight aside, Acura TLX is also the biggest sedan in the segment where every exterior dimension is bigger except for the height where the tallest one is the RED SPORT 400. That said, the highest ground clearance is given on the rival from the BMW and the least one on the opponent from the Mercedes-Benz. Highlights of the exterior features include:

  • Automatic on/off LED headlights
  • Front LED fog lights
  • A power sliding tinted glass moonroof
  • Unique Red Sport 400 Exhaust Tips
  • Unique design 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Auto leveling adaptive front-lighting system (optional)
  • Rain-sensing front windscreen wipers
  • Infiniti radiant grille emblem (optional)
Safety
8.0/10

Since the 2022 Infiniti Q50 sedan is not out yet, the 2021 model’s safety ratings are still a valuable asset. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not tested the Q50 but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has. It has assigned ‘Good’ ratings to the 2021 Infiniti Q50 in the Crashworthiness tests and ‘Advanced’ ratings in the crash avoidance & mitigation test.

That said, the standard safety features given on the Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 are brake assist, tire pressure monitoring system, emergency inside trunk release, forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, car immobilizer system, intelligent key backup slot, and intelligent cruise control with full-speed range. You will also get optional features such as blind-spot intervention, lane departure prevention with active lane control, and front-seat driver/passenger pre-crash seatbelts. Highlights of the safety features include:

  • Intelligent cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind-spot intervention (optional)
  • Emergency inside trunk release
  • Lane departure prevention with active lane control (optional)
  • Security alarm
  • Automatic collision notification
Competition
4.0/10

2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 vs 2021 BMW 3 Series 340i

Infiniti Q50 sedan RED SPORT 400 has the lead in terms of horsepower while the BMW 3 Series 340i has the lead in terms of torque. However, this opponent from the BMW is slightly quicker on its feet compared to the Q50 RED SPORT 400. Furthermore, the BMW 3 Series 340i holds an advantage when it comes to fuel economy. To overcome these shortcomings, Infiniti has given a fuel tank with 4.4 gallons more fuel storage capacity than the BMW 340i, so that Q50 RED SPORT 400 can have the advantage if the range is considered but this alone is not enough to defeat the BMW 340i.

2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG C 43

As far as driving dynamics and handling capabilities are concerned, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG C 43 performs much better than the Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400. But if attention is focused on cargo capacity, fuel efficiency, interior space, fuel storage capacity, and cargo space then the AMG C 43 loses the battle. Even though there is no marginal difference in the price tag, overall the match is in favor of the RED SPORT 400 that has won against the C-Class AMG C 43 in terms of practicality.

2022 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 vs 2021 Acura TLX Type S

Slow, consume more fuel, has a more confined cabin, and comes with a smaller fuel tank compared to the Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400, the Acura TLX Type S has very few advantages over the rival from the Infiniti, one of which is having few thousand bucks less in the MRSP. However, the game does not simply end there because the TLX Type S still offers a more enjoyable ride in comparison. That said, the Acura TLX has been crowned with the ‘top safety pick+’ award from the IIHS while no such recognition has been earned by the Infiniti Q50 for the 2021 year model.

Final Verdict

It was a tough grind against the opponents. Nonetheless, the new Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 will still be a better choice as compared to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG C 43 and the Acura TLX Type S, provided you are ready to sacrifice a pleasurable driving experience. But if you don’t mind slightly less range and features, then the BMW 3 Series 340i is a better deal for you to bring home.
