2019 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 Sedan Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Infiniti was conceived as a Luxury Car manufacturer by Nissan, when they first launched the brand. Hence, over the years, they have been dishing out some luxurious cars in the range. But like its German rivals, Infiniti wanted to spice up its standard Luxury laden vehicles, with a big dollop of performance. Infiniti put this thought into production, with their Red Sport line of Vehicles.

The 2019 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 is the performance oriented version of the standard Q50 and has received some minor updates, over the 2018 model. The Red Sport 400 comes in just 2 options in 2019-RWD and AWD and gets some important additions in the form of standard safety tech. Both the trims have been priced at $52,545 and $54,545 for the RWD and AWD variants respectively.

Powering the 2019 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 is a 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 that punches out 400hp and 350lbs.-ft. of Torque. The Infiniti Q50 Red Sport can still seat a total of 5 people comfortably and gets plenty of features on the inside. The Primary rivals for the Infiniti include the Audi S4, BMW 440i xDrive Coupe Sedan, Jaguar XE S and the Kia Stinger GT.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial April 10, 2019

Infiniti has been long known for its Luxurious offerings and with brands like BMW and Lexus, trying to wow consumers with cars that offered both performance and luxury, Infiniti unlaunched their offensive with the Red Sport line of vehicles. The 2019 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 offers a blend a both luxury and performance, with its twin turbocharged V6 motor that pushes out 400hp and 350lbs.-ft. of torque and the luxury from the standard Q50.

2019 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 Sedan Features

The 2019 Infiniti Q50 Reds Sport 400 comes in just 1 trim but can be had in either a RWD configuration or an AWD configuration. Both come powered by the same 3.0L Twin Turbo motor that belts out 400hp and 350ft.-lbs. of torque. All the features standard on the Top End Q50 have been carried forward in the Red Sport 400 as well.

There is a 7-speed automatic transmission on offer as standard, while no manual option exists. You can however opt for manual control using the Steering wheel mounted paddle shifters for when you desire. Rear-wheel drive comes standard but for more grip, you can opt for the AWD option as well.

Acceleration

The 2019 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 manages to do the 60MPH run in just 4.5 seconds. This is an astonishing feat considering the size of this sedan and the power output. In the quarter mile run as well, the Red Sport doesn't disappoint as it does the same in just 13 seconds.

Speaking of competition, the Infiniti loses out to the Audi S4 in the both the 60MPH dash and the quarter mile run. All other cars lose out to the Infiniti, with the Kia coming the closest to it while the Jag being the slowest.

Braking and Handling

While most luxury cars come with front-wheel drive, the Infiniti Q50 like other in the competition offers a standard rear-wheel drive (AWD optional). The 2019 model gets an update suspension and improved steering which feels light and quick to respond. Handling is agile and there is not much body roll while cornering. The available Direct Adaptive steering system (allows you to adjust the amount of energy required to turn the wheel) feels restive in normal condition.

The Q50 Red Sport also comes equipped with electric steering which is quite responsive when you are going fast. Overall, you will enjoy driving around in the Infiniti Q50 as it offers a smooth ride over most road surface. Even brakes feel strong and easy to modulate with a braking distance of 109-feet which is best in the segment.

2019 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 Sedan Fuel Economy

Infiniti hasn't compromised on the Fuel Economy figures of the 2019 Q50 Red Sport, while focusing on the performance of the same. The 22MPG overall output of the Infiniti is lower than most rivals but is respectable in real world. The Infiniti delivers a maximum 26MPG on the Highway and 19MPG on the city.

2019 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 Sedan Interior

"The Q50 offers a good balance of luxury and sport, and the interior reflects that. The materials' quality and fit and finish are very good, and the design is a smart mix of precision and luxury." Kelley Blue Book

Seating and Comfort

Infiniti has stuck to its design which is almost a decade old now, however superior material has been used in the cabin of Q50. It feels robust from inside and all the controls are within reach. The touchscreen infotainment system has some drawback as the display is often concealed by glares and fingerprints. The interior of the Infiniti Q50 as compared to the newer luxury sports sedans feels average.

The 2019 Infiniti Q50 is very quiet even at highway speed. Wind noise is minimal but the rumbling engine and tire will also not bother you. Suspensions are strong and do a good job in isolating the driver and passenger from bumpy roads. Getting in and out of the car is easy. The Q50 being the longest in the segment ensures that even the tallest person can be at ease in the back seat.

Infiniti's seats are extremely comfy and offer plenty of support to the drivers. Cushioning on the seats are soft and firm at the same time to keep you in control while aggressive driving. Seats come standard with leatherette upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. Optional feature includes:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Front sports seats with greater side support
  • Heated steering wheel

"It may not be as polished as the competition, but the Q50 is still a capable and stylish alternative"-Edmunds.com

Design and Styling

The 2019 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport gets a bolder and wider bumper and differentiates itself from the standard Q50. Overall, the Sports Sedan looks stylish and more aggressive than its predecessors.

The Red Sport 400 comes with a dark chrome, larger wheel size, and fog light. It also distinguishes itself further with a black lower-bumper section and a distinct body color diffuser.

Looking at the sides the story remains almost the same with no noticeable changes. Only the windows have now been finished with gloss black matching the side view mirrors. From the back, the taillight has been updated to give a more modern look. Changes apart, the Infiniti has maintained its curves for the best and is one of the most attractive looking vehicles in the segment.

2019 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 Sedan Safety

Safety features

The 2019 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400, doesn't exactly feels deficient in terms of the Safety Features on offer. Taking customer feedback into account, Infiniti has added some more safety features in the 2019 model as compared to the 2018 variant. The Features include

  • 4 Wheel ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution
  • Auto Emergency braking
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Side Curtain and Front Airbags
  • LATCH System
  • Emergency inside trunk release

2019 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 Sedan Competition

Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400Vs Audi S4

The Audi S4 has been one of the most reliable and well-built performance sedans in the segment. The Audi offers superb levels of luxury on the inside and employs the use of premium materials on the inside. The Infotainment system is slick to use and has good connectivity options. The Infiniti on the other hand offers a lot more power and torque and has a bit more practicality on offer. So if performance is your priority, then the Infiniti would make better sense but for everything else, we would tilt towards the Audi.

Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 Vs Kia Stinger GT

The Kia Stinger GT is the first attempt from Kia in creating a sports car and they have done a pretty good job at that. The Kia offers the practicality of a normal road going sedan but doesn't disappoint in terms of performance. The Kia has a better infotainment system than the Infiniti and the near $10k difference in pricing from the Infiniti, shifts things in favor of the Kia easily.

Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 Vs BMW 440i

The BMW 440i is often considered as the segment benchmark in terms of handling and drive dynamics. The 440i offers superb levels of refinement, has a sporty and performance oriented ride and a sophisticated infotainment system. The BMW may be slightly underpowered than the Infiniti but makes up on the track, courtesy of a superb ride and handling package. What takes the ball in the court of the Infiniti is the pricing as the Infiniti is 2 grand cheaper than the Bimmer and offers itself as a better value proposition.

2019 Infiniti Q50 RED SPORT 400 Sedan Final Verdict

It's not often that you see that a manufacturer is able to sustain and make a success out of a performance car derived from a normal road going car. With the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400, Infiniti has pulled out all stops in making a performance oriented but comfortable sedan. Leave aside the dated interior design and the lack of some technological features and you have a sporty sedan that can take your kids to the school and quench your thirst of performance on the weekend. The Infiniti Q50 Red Sport has its quirks but leave aside those and you have a sedan that is both practical and sporty and doesn't break your bank in achieving the same.
