Engine

7.1/10

“Infiniti has improved its crossover's ride quality, but it remains unsettled against rivals. And its CVT does it few favors in the refinement department.”- carconection

Engine and Transmission

The engine on duty on the 2017 Infiniti QX60 is the 2.5L l4 supercharged unit working in tandem with a low output electric motor pumping out a combined figure of 250 hp and 243 lb-ft torque. The gear shifts are handled by continuously variable tranny.

The engine takes its own sweet time to build up substantial momentum and never really gets goings hard enough to be sporty. But, its soft nature is exactly what buyers expect out of a luxury crossover.

On paper with the rivals, the QX60 is one of the least powerful vehicles in the segment at 250 hp but it is actually the most expensive one as well.

Acceleration

Since the car sports a continuous variable transmission, sportiness is bound to take the back seat. Off the mark, performance is not even near anything sporty. The shift in momentum as the car takes off might irk a few folks. All in all, the acceleration complements the overall nature of the car perfectly by providing a smooth and comfortable performance even the pedal is floored.

There are no 0-60 mph or quarter mile times available for the Infiniti QX60 Hybrid presently. The Acura MDX Sport with its 3L engine is the quickest off the line amongst its rivals while the Lexus RX450h Hybrid is the fastest to complete quarter of a mile.

Ride and Handling

Smooth and soothing are two words that perfectly describe the Infiniti QX60. The cabin insulation is as good as it gets in the price range with very little noise seeping in. The car behaves well at moderate speed and takes on corners without much drama. The back of the car does, however, tend to become heavier on sharp turns.

The steering wheel feedback is bound to disappoint many due to its synthetic like feedback. The suspension does a great job on smooth surfaces but shows it a rough patch of road or a big pothole and the ride becomes notably jarring.

Braking

Brakes on the QX60 Hybrid features 12.6-inch rotors in the front and 12.1-inch rotors in the back. The brakes have a balmy tendency and lack the precision expected especially when you push the pedal hard. The hefty 4,559 lbs curb weight certainly worsens the situation even further.

There no official 60-0 mph rating available for the Infiniti QX60 Hybrid presently. Acura MDX Sport Hybrid features the biggest rotor amongst all its rivals at 13.0 inch. However, it’s the Lexus RX 450h Hybrid which features the best in class braking distance.at 123 feet.

Fuel Economy

7.1/10

When one buys a hybrid vehicle, savings on fuel become an essential part of the overall experience. The Infiniti QX60 stays true on its promises and provides a fuel efficiency of 25/27/26 (City/Highway/Combined) - Caranddriver

The Lexus RX 450h pulls ahead of the rivals with best in class fuel economy of 30 mpg. Both Acura MDX Sport Hybrid and Mini Countryman plug-in hybrid feature a fuel economy of 27 mpg which puts the QX60 at the bottom of the table.

“Upmarket leather trim and a flexible second row that allows child seats to remain in place for third row access help the QX60 here.”- Carconnection

Seating and Comfort

Comfort and space is where the QX60 excels. The seats are plush with a lot of feel-good materials loaded all over the car. Heating and ventilation are standard on all trims. The leather seating surface not only feels premium but it also grants a fine look at the interior.

Although the space in fine till the 2nd row but the 3rd row is certainly no good for adults. Small kids are probably the only one the 3rd row is meant for.

Infotainment

The QX60 Hybrid features a small but rich 7-inch screen. The touchscreen works well only when given its own time to operate. Restlessness in the MMI operation makes the system lag and freeze at times. The car features Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, satellite radio as standard. Unfortunately, it misses out on modern connectivity features like Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Interior Features

Interior Features on the Infiniti Qx60 include

  • Leather seats
  • Optional rear mounted monitors
  • 15 speaker Bose system
  • 7-inch screen
  • Overhead storage
  • 60/40 split seats

Cargo Capacity

Being a crossover, the cargo capacity should naturally be no concern for the Infiniti QX60. The car features a modest 15.8 ft.cube cargo space behind the 3rd row and 40.8 ft.cube space when the 3rd row is folded. Loading angles are accurately designed and the motion activated lift gate is certainly a welcome feature.

The Acura MDX Sport Hybrid is the only vehicle in the segment to feature a bigger boot space than the Infiniti QX60. The second in line is the Lexus RX 450h Hybrid and the Mini is too small to be compared to the rivals.

“The 2017 Infiniti QX60's rounded, sleek design has been recently updated with redesigned headlights and grille, and new fog-light surrounds. The side view shows a gently sloping roof, but that design doesn’t negatively affect the QX60's impressive interior room.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight

The Infiniti QX60 is a full sized 3-row crossover and weighs a hefty 4559 lbs. The exterior dimensions of the car are well balanced from the front but create an overhang from the back which makes it look too elongated. It’s no wonder that the car is one of the longest vehicles in the segment with a length of 196.4 inches,

The Mini is the smallest and lightest amongst all its rivals due to the absence of the 3rd row. The Lexus RX450H is the heaviest in the segment at 4740 lbs.

Wheels

Both the FWD and AWD models of the Infiniti QX60 feature 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. While the FWD trim features summer tires, the AWD trims come with all weather tires as standard.

Safety

Crash testing of the Infiniti QX60 Hybrid by the NHTSA yielded brilliant results for the vehicle. It features 5 stars in almost all the segment considered by the agency. The front driver side ratings and the roll over rating were the only one to feature a 4-star rating.

Not only has Infiniti ensured optimum structural rigidity but has also taken care of the occupants by loading active safety features such as stability control, emergency braking etc as standard.

Competition

Acura MDX Sport Hybrid Vs Qx60 Hybrid SUV

The Acura MDX and the Infiniti QX60 look eerily similar at a glance. Both the cars have station wagon looks. The Acura might look like a station wagon but it certainly drives a like a sports car. The 321 hp engine with 7-speed shifter is an explosive combo as it makes the car fun to drive around town or on the freeway.

The QX60 however, is a much better family car primarily due to better legroom and utility specs. Since both the cars are priced identically, its the buyer who has decided based on what he desires the most, space and practicality or sportiness.

Lexus RX450H Hybrid Vs Qx60 Hybrid SUV

The Lexus RX 450h certainly beats the QX60 Hybrid in terms of exteriors by quite some distance. While the Infiniti feels like a minivan, the Lexus appears much more like a crossover. With best in class mileage and a powerful motor, the Lexus appears to be much better than the Infiniti

However, the 3rd space, MMI usability and boot space is where the QX60 Hybrid triumphs. But, given the price tag difference amongst the two cars, the Lexus RX 450h Hybrid is the clear winner amongst the two.

Mini Countryman plug In Hybrid Vs Qx60 Hybrid SUV

The Mini Countryman Hybrid, which underpins the BMW X1 SUV is a spunky little car. The interiors are quirky, and it's an overall fun to drive this car. But, it feels out place with the other cars in the segment. There is not a lot of interior space or boot space. The absence of a 3rd further hinders its utility aspect and to top it all off, the fuel economy isn't great either.

Hence, if you want a 5 seater vehicle, it is only then that the Mini can be considered as an option, otherwise, the Infiniti QX60 hybrid is better value for money.

Final Verdict

The Infiniti QX60 Hybrid is one of the few crossovers out there that offer a spacious 3rd-row seat. On the inside, the interiors are modestly decorated with soft-touch leather and loaded with a lot of nitty-gritty spaces in between the rows. This is a car which has not forgotten about the well being of the passengers no matter what row they’re sitting in. All in all, the engine specs are a letdown but otherwise, the Infiniti QX60 Hybrid is one of the better family cars in the market as of now.
