Overview

When buying a crossover, folks generally follow the contention and are prepared to make a compromise on either luxury or space. Infiniti has finally cracked the stereotype and devised a vehicle that offers the spoils of crossover in neat and complete package and it's called the 2017 Infiniti QX60.

The QX60 is a rather uncannily designed crossover that mimics a minivan to an extent but comes in a proper 4 door format with a modern looking exterior. The rear fascia might irk a few but none can deny that it is not your regular and simple look,

The mid-size SUV comes with both FWD and AWD on offer making it a true all-weather vehicle. The 3rd-row space in the car can give even some of the bigger SUVs a run for their money. It is all the ability in the world to become a perfect car for the big American family.

Features

7.8/10

The crossover is available in only 1 trim. Both AWD and FWD powertrain is available. The standard list of features includes three-zone climate control, keyless ignition and a moon amongst other features. Optional features include rear seat infotainment screens, active safety package and much more.

For a starting price of 43,100 and 44,900 for the FWD and AWD model respectively, the QX60 forms a great option for buyers in the crossover segment.

We Recommend

Since there is only one trim on offer, the only thing to choose from are the powertrains. Although the AWD trim is not particularly effective but it does help when the weather gets tough. If you live in a state where the weather gets snowy, the AWD trim makes more sense. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong the FWD trim either.

There are some optional packages available named Premium, Premium Plus and Deluxe Technology package. You may choose any of these as per your convenience. By the way, the Deluxe package os the costliest with some Driver Assistance package.

Engine

7.1/10
“If you’re looking for a pillowy soft, easy-driving SUV, you’ll find a companion with the 2017 Infiniti QX60. Steering takes only a light touch (a plus for urban exploration, a drawback for spirited highway driving), and the brakes are quite strong.”- cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

The engine on duty on the 2017 Infiniti QX60 is a 3.5L V6 motor that has being updated recently. A Continuously variable tranny does the job of transferring power to the wheels. The powertrain combo is one of the smoothest and quietest in business and goes well with the overall persona of the car.

In comparison with rivals, the Infiniti QX60 is the 2nd most powerful vehicle at 296 hp. The most powerful vehicle in the segment is the Lincoln MKX at 303 hp.

Acceleration

Acceleration is something that does not come naturally to crossovers or minivans in general. The Infiniti QX60 is able to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 8 seconds flat and then it goes on to complete a quarter of a mile in 16.3 seconds. There is nothing special to mention about the acceleration as it as balmy as one would expect from a family car.

The fastest car in the segment is the Lincoln MKX at 6.3 seconds. Not too far behind is the Acura MDX at 6.4 seconds. Both the other cars lag at least a seconds behind the segment leader.

Ride and Handling

A thing that is clear from the very start is that the QX60 compromises a lot on driving dynamics in the name of comfort. The car has pillow soft suspension setup and electronically enhanced steering wheel which does help the car in navigating through tricky urban conditions but do not help at all when winding through twisty roads.

The comfort on the car is on another level altogether but the complete disregard for the fun factor is something that could’ve been avoided in order to make the car better from a driver’s perspective.

Braking

Brakes on the QX60 features 12.6-inch rotors in the front and 12.1-inch rotors in the back. The brakes have a balmy tendency and lack the precision expected especially when you push the pedal hard. The hefty 4,383 lbs curb weight certainly worsens the situation even further.

In comparison, the Lincoln MKX has the best brakes amongst rivals with a stopping distance of 118 feet. All the other cars including the Infiniti QX60 fall at same pegs with braking distance ranging from 121 ft to 123 ft

Fuel Economy

6.9/10

In the present day of ever-increasing fuel prices, fuel economy has become more important than ever. The Infiniti QX60 does 22 miles to a gallon in combined city and highway usage which is modest but slightly on the lower side.

In comparison, it is actually one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its segment. The only car that is able to offer a better mileage is the Lexus RX350 at 23 mpg.

Interior

8.5/10
“This is a luxurious, thoughtfully designed interior. It not only looks good, but it's also easy to find all the controls. We also like the easy access to the third row.”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Comfort and space are where the QX60 excels. The seats are plush with a lot of feel-good materials loaded all over the car. Heating and ventilation are standard on all trims. The leather seating surface not only feels premium but it also grants a fine look the interior. Although the space in fine till the 2nd row but the 3rd row is certainly no good for adults. Small kids are probably the only one the 3rd row is meant for.

The Infiniti QX60 is certainly the most spacious vehicle amongst its rivals, especially in the front row. The 2nd spot is taken up by the Lincoln MKX but it can only seat 5 people in comparison to the 7 of the QX60.

Infotainment

The QX60 Hybrid features a small but rich 7-inch screen. The touch screen works well only when given its own time to operate. Sluggishness in the MMI operation makes the system lag and freeze at times. The car features Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, satellite radio as standard. Unfortunately, it misses out on modern connectivity features like Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Interior Features

  • Leather seats
  • Optional rear mounted monitors
  • 15 speaker bose system
  • 7 inch screen
  • Overhead storage
  • 60/40 split seats

Cargo volume

Being a crossover, the cargo capacity should naturally be no concern for the Infiniti QX60. The car features a segment-leading 76.5 ft.cube of cargo volume behind the 2nd row. Loading angles are accurately designed and the motion activated lift gate is certainly a welcome feature. Airport runs and long distance drives should not be a problem at all.

The Infiniti QX60 is the segment leader when it comes to cargo volume. The car with the smallest boot is the Lincoln MKX with a paltry 37.2 cube.ft of cargo volume.

Towing Capacity

Crossover vehicles are seldom used to tow stuff behind their backs. But, the Infiniti QX60 still has the ability to tow up to 5000 lbs shall its owner decide to tie something at the rear end.

The Infiniti QX60 is the only vehicle able to tow some decent amount of weight at the rear while all the other rivals lag far behind.

“The 2017 Infiniti QX60's rounded, sleek design has been recently updated with redesigned headlights and grille, and new fog-light surrounds. The side view shows a gently sloping roof, but that design doesn’t negatively affect the QX60's impressive interior room. One of the key styling cues of the QX60 is the bowed window frame at the back of the side windows.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight

The Infiniti QX60 is a unique vehicle to look at due to its peculiar rear styling. The car is proportioned in a way similar to a minivan but with 4 proper doors. The rear end looks rather extended but fits in well with the overall profile of the car. At 4383 lbs, the car is one of the heaviest amongst all competitors.

In comparison, the QX60 is the heaviest and longest car in the segment. The widest car in the segment is the ACura MDX at 77.8 inches.

Safety

6.8/10

Crash testing of the Infiniti QX60 by the NHTSA yielded brilliant results for the vehicle. It features 5 stars in almost all the segment considered by the agency. The front driver side ratings and the roll over rating were the only one to feature a 4-star rating. Not only has Infiniti ensured optimum structural rigidity but has also taken care of the occupants by loading active safety features such as stability control, emergency braking etc as standard.

Safety Features

  • Predictive Forward Collision Warning
  • Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians system
  • Backup Collision Intervention
  • Blind Spot Warning and Blind Spot Intervention Systems
  • Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention Systems

Competition

Infiniti QX60 VS Acura MDX

The Acura MDX and the Infiniti QX60 look eerily similar at a glance. Both the cars haves station wagon looks. The Acura might look like a station wagon but it certainly drives a like a sports car. The 290 hp engine with 7 speed shifter is an explosive combo as it makes the car fun to drive around town or on the freeway.

The QX60 however, is a much better family car primarily due to better legroom and utility specs. Since both the cars are priced identically, its the buyer who has decided based on what he desires the most, space and practicality or sportiness.

Infiniti QX60 VS Lexus RX 350

The Lexus RX 350 certainly beats the QX60 Hybrid in terms of exteriors by quite some distance. While the Infiniti feels like a minivan, the Lexus appears much more like a crossover. With best in class mileage and a powerful motor, the Lexus appears to be much better than the Infiniti

However, the 3rd space, MMI usability and boot space is where the QX60 triumphs. But, given the price tag difference amongst the two cars, It again boils down to personal preference..

Infiniti QX60 VS Lincoln MKX

The 2017 Lincoln MKX is a stylish and bold looking vehicle. The car looks like a proper mini SUV with its imposing front fascia. The interiors of the car are top notch and one glance inside the cabin is enough to realize how well all the components are integrated together. The engine on its own is a powerhouse but the gearbox lets it down by holding a gear for too long.

But, practicality and usability is where the MKX loses out to the QX60. The Lincoln has a tiny boot and can seat only 5 occupants.

Final Verdict

The Infiniti QX60 is a unique and peculiar looking vehicle that might not necessarily suit everyone’s taste. But, on the inside, the car is destined to appear amazing value for money. The car has been designed to ferry big families in comfort and that it does extremely well. The Infiniti QX60 is best suited to urban environments where it is able to maneuver around with ease due to a light steering wheel and soft suspension. It is not at all a sporty car and enthusiasts are bound to be disappointed.
