Overall Rating

Fuel Economy

The QX70 offers a 3.7 liter V6 mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. The power plant is considerably dated and we expect the newer VC turbo engine to make its way to the newer generation of QX70. If you are looking at the Infiniti QX70, the competition in form of BMW X6 and Porsche Macan offer more potent performance with their better engines and updated technology.

The QX70 is offered in two trims. You can choose from an RWD or AWD. The pricing starts at $45,850 for the base model. The AWD is priced at $47,650 and goes up to $58,480 for the optional packages. The QX70 comes with a well put together cabin.

The QX70 comes with 4 different packages called the Premium, Sport, Limited and Technology. These packages bring in a host of features which contribute to increased safety, better looks, and different interiors. These features make the QX70 a lot easier to live with.

  • Power sliding tinted glass moonroof with one-touch open/close, tilt feature and sliding sunshade
  • Black Lacquer interior trim
  • Includes all QX70 features plus
  • Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD)

"A somewhat coarse but brawny 325-hp 3.7-liter V-6 is mated to a seven-speed automatic; choose either rear- or all-wheel drive. The QX70 feels at home hustling around corners but the steering is regrettably numb." - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The Infiniti QX70 is offered with a single engine option only. The engine is coarse at the higher revs. The gearbox on offer is a 7 speed shiftable automatic. The shifts are pretty slick. There is plenty of power to keep you grinning through your city commutes or the weekend highway getaways.

Although, the 3.7 liters V6 has aged, considerably. The QX70 is no slowpoke. It still manages a decent 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. These figures are lesser than the Porsche Macan which does it at 5.1 seconds. Even the Jaguar F-Pace manages it at 5.3 seconds.

BMW X6 goes from naught to 60 in 5.8 seconds. Still, the QX70 is the slowest of the lot, doing a 0-60 mph in longest 6 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The predecessor of the Infiniti QX70, the FX series was the pioneer of the segment. Who would have thought that after all these years this segment would be doing so well?

The QX70 is a pleasure to drive on those winding roads. The steering provides ample feedback and is not unnerving at higher speeds. The sport-tuned suspension makes QX70 eager for those high-speed corners. But this agility comes is a downside when it comes to riding comfort. The QX70 is pretty unforgiving on those rough surfaces.

The long traverse of the brake pedal doesn\u2019t inspire confidence in emergency braking situations. Although the QX70 comes from 60 mph to a standstill within 120 ft. But these figures are nowhere near the segment best of 105 ft posed by the BMW X6. The QX70 comes in third followed by the Jaguar F-Pace.

Fuel Economy

Being one of the oldest vehicles in the SUV segment, you won\u2019t be passing many gas stations. The QX70 gives a combined MPG of 18 which is one of the lowest in the segment. When it comes to fuel efficiency the Porsche Macan scores the segment best of 22 combined mpg.

"In the nine years that the Infiniti QX70 and its FX35 predecessor have been in production, there have several evolutionary changes, but the basic design and many components have remained unchanged. As a result, the interior has a distinct "last-generation" look and feel about it. Many features that were considered top notch a few years ago have been surpassed by newer rivals."- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The front seats are comfortable for those long drives. The rear seat offers lesser leg room and would not seat 3 adults comfortably. The rear leg room which stands at 34.6 inches is the least in the segment.

By opting for an Optional package you can have a cooling function for the seats. The seats in the Sports option offer power adjustable side bolstering to keep you tucked in while cornering aggressively.

The infotainment system along with its dash-mounted controls is outclassed by modern systems offered by the competition. The interior has lost its charm and is definitely headed towards a major overhaul, the next time.

Interior Features

There is a modest list of features on the Infiniti QX70. Some of the key features are,

  • Doors trimmed with high-contrast materials
  • Climate-controlled seats
  • Stone-colored stitching on the steering wheel
  • Door armrests
  • Shifter boot

Cargo Capacity

The QX70 holds up to 24.8 cubic feet of cargo. When the rear seats are down, it offers 62 cubic feet of cargo space. These are a decent number for this segment.

"The QX70 continues to be distinguished by its sports-car-like long hood, side air vents just aft the front wheels, raked roof and twin exhaust outlets." - Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight

When it was introduced, the QX70 had a design which was ahead of its time. Over the years, and very few changes to the design the QX70 has aged well. With a generous curb weight of 4209 lbs. and decent dimensions it is still more car for your money.

The BMW X6 and the Jaguar F- Pace have outgrown the QX70, dimensionally. These SUVs are longer, wider and offer better ground clearance than the QX70.

The Infiniti QX70 is yet to be tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated QX70's rear crash protection and to be Good.

Infiniti QX70 vs BMW X6

The X6 offers a better naught to 60 acceleration and beats the QX70 by 0.2 seconds. There are more packages, it means that you can choose different engine options. There is the audacious 4.4-liter turbo that comes with all-wheel drive. The air suspension provides a finer tuning. It makes the BMW X6 is a very agile machine.

The X6 flaunts a very loaded interior which is extremely quiet even at highway speeds. The X6 provides cargo space which is comparable to the QX70. Dimensionally the X6 is heavier, lengthier and higher than the QX70.

Infiniti QX70 vs Porsche Macan

It's similar with the Macan, the former put up better acceleration figures than the QX70. There are more packages on offer which open you to the possibility of finding the trim that would suit you better. As you move higher up the trim ladder, the Macan has some serious performance under the hood and being a Porsche, the Macan does engage the driver as no other SUV does.

But the Macan loses out on practicality simply because of the minimalistic cargo space which comes nowhere close to the QX 70's generous 24.8 cubic feet volume. Macan's newer platform makes it the lightest SUV of the lot. It weighs 3902 lbs. and provides a combined mpg of 22.

Infiniti QX70 vs Jaguar F-Pace

The only supercharged SUV in the segment, the Jag posts crisp numbers when it comes acceleration. The F-Pace does its 0-60 mph in a modest 5.3 seconds. And it is very hard to miss the distinct exhaust note. For your daily runs, the F-Pace puts up a decent performance. The Jag can be your reasonable decision for performance without compromising too much on the fuel economy.

The F-Pace's massive 33.5 cu.-ft. cargo spaces are the segment best. The combined mpg of 20 makes it easier to live with daily. The F-Pace checks out all the right boxes when you are considering a car for your family.

Final Verdict

The Infiniti QX70 is one of the oldest SUVs in the segment. There has been a lot of development in the segment and the rivals have better engines and technology on offer. Still, the QX70 offers a decent package at its price point. The QX70 offers a powerful 325 hp V6 engine which still offers good performance.

The QX70 has aged well but the interior design and the dashboard-mounted controls may not please everyone. Now when the competition has better interior ambiance and infotainment system to offer. The patched-up interiors of the QX70 fail to impress us. The combined mpg of 18 is the lowest in the segment.

Still, the Porsche Macan and BMW X6 offer very stiff competition to the Infiniti QX70. But if you are looking for an SUV that does well for your daily runs and enough space for the family then the Jaguar F-Pace with its better-combined mpg and modest performance might be a good choice.
