The latest iteration of the QX80 offers a newly redesigned front grille and upgraded interiors. The mid-cycle update adds the much needed improvements making the car a holistic package.

2018 Infiniti QX80 Engine

8.9/10
“While the Infiniti’s powertrain is powerful and refined, its rivals were quicker in our testing. And though the QX80’s V-8 was subdued on the highway, its passing performance left something to be desired.” - Caranddriver

Engine and transmission

The beast of a car comes with a 5.6L V8 that produces 400 hp and 413lb-ft of torque. These numbers are impressive on both the spec sheet and the real-time testing. There haven’t been any drastic changes to the engine specs which is much appreciated. The 7-speed transmission is satisfactory and delivers downshifts when necessary.

The QX80’s engine enjoys being in the better half of the comparison table. It is second only to the Cadillac which has a larger engine that translates to a better hp and torque. The Lexus is still in the race with only a deficit of 17 ponies as compared to the Infiniti, The Merc although is not also in the same league.

Acceleration

It rushes from 0-60 mph in 6.2s which can be said to be modest at best. The 5,676-pound automobile is one of the lesser impressive cars in this parameter.

The Cadillac is the class leader in this segment blazing past through the course with just 5.7s on the clock. The nearest rival is the Merc which is 0.3s slower. With such a huge gap in the times, the Cadillac bolsters its supremity in this section too.

Ride and Handling

This ride will disappoint you if you are looking for a luxury meets sports vehicle. It’s best you look somewhere else if the aforementioned characteristic was high on your priority list. The Escalade will satiate both of these traits.

Coming back to the Infiniti Qx 80 the subliminally luxury and comfort-inducing cabin on wheels does have an independent suspension in the front and rear. The Hydraulic Motion Control feature of the Deluxe Technology package counteracts body motion by actively adjusting the suspension. All in all, it offers a great riding experience. The high turning radius is the only sore point of this vehicle.

Braking

The car under scrutiny comes to halt in a mere 122 feet whilst going from 60-0 mph. The distance displayed in the table is impressive, to say the least. Equipped with brakes that are on the smaller side of the table the QX80 manages the least stopping distance even after being a fundamentally heavy car.

2018 Infiniti QX80 Interior

6.5/10
“There's plenty of interior room to go around. In spite of thick roof pillars, outward visibility is good thanks to a high seating position and big mirrors.” - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

All the cars are capable of carrying 7 passengers at a time and have the third row too. Surprisingly the Lexus can harbor 8 passengers under its roof. The passenger space is ample and modest, to say the least, but not class leading in any way.

The Caddy and the Merc outclass the QX80 in every way in the passenger space. The competition also offers, much more suave looking interiors which reek of luxury whilst the infinity reminds us of its utilitarian purpose.

Infotainment System

The infotainment system software was updated for 2018 in the otherwise dated system. The 8-inch screen and Bose speakers offer mundane performance. Making across the just acceptable mark each of the cars in this segment offers a better infotainment experience than the QX80. Even after the update, it feels outdated which isn’t a good thing.

Interior Features

Infiniti’s SUV comes preloaded with the following features :

  • Tilting steering column
  • Telescoping steering column
  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Memory driver’s seat
  • Power driver's seat
  • Power front-passenger seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Heated front armrests
  • Heated rear armrests
  • Refrigerated compartment

Cargo Capacity

With a Cargo volume of 16.6 cubic feet, the QX 80 offers class-leading storage space. This will come in handy for people who are buying this vehicle as a utility based vehicle that can do more than just cruising on a well-built road whilst carrying some weight.

The car that is up for review offers 95.1 cubic feet of space. This is enough space for packing essential camping equipment on your next adventure into the wild. The Cadillac comes in at a close second position and the Merc only lagging behind by a hair. The Lexus does not even come close to these three with only 83.1 cubic feet of space.

Towing Capacity

This is one department where the Infiniti QX 80 outshines everyone else. If lugging a trailer is on your mind the QX80 should be your choice.

2018 Infiniti QX80 Features

7.9/10

The Infiniti QX 80 is available only in a single trim with enough optional additional packages to satiate even the most nitpicky customer base. Whether you want a performance package or a utilitarian-based one Infiniti has your back.

  • The Driver Assistance package adds sensors that add a multitude of advanced safety tech to the formidable drive making it omnipresently safe on wheels.
  • The Theatre package ups the ante and lives up to its name with the addition of two 8 inch LCD screens and wireless headphones for the second row. The heated seats that come with the ensemble only add to the viewing pleasure. Want to spend a night under the stars while watching a movie then this is the package for you.
  • The Deluxe package works similar to how adding deluxe to a room in the hotel business works. It embellishes the car with a host of luxury features that sans the package would be hard to find. If luxury is on thy mind then this is the ride that will make thee satisfy.

We recommend

We recommend getting the Driver Assistance package which makes this Cruiser a real joy to ride. The addition of several advanced features that tiptoe on the line of luxury and utility are a must have in our book.

Dimension and Weight

On the better side of things, the Infiniti is second only to the Cadillac again in length, width. The Cadillac is the tallest amongst its competitors while the QX has the highest ground clearance.

Having a higher ground clearance than the rest facilitates the off-roading capabilities of the Infiniti but we would suggest against the 22’ wheels. The Mercedes and Lexus are close competitors but in the end, fall behind on the spec sheet.

The looks of all the aforementioned cars are highly subjective but all of them do manage to turn heads wherever you go, this is one segment that shall create a divide amongst the car buyers and enthusiasts.

Infiniti QX 80 looks modern and brash while the Mercedes GLS oozes german crafts making luxury and finesse. The Cadillac Escalade and the Lexus LX570 have distinctive front grille which establishes a sense of authority and attention demanding aura which might be missing from the other two.

In the end, you’re spoilt for choices in this segment.

Exterior Features

Some of the exterior features that come with the QX 80 are

  • Automatic headlamps
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Power-operated liftgate
  • Sun Roof
  • Back-up camera
  • Tire Pressure Warning

2018 Infiniti QX80 Fuel Economy

6.7/10

The Infiniti falls short of expectation and does not avoid the gas guzzler tag. With an abysmal performance of 16 mpg, the QX 80 does not do justice to the buyer’s fuel allowance. The city mpg of 14 and highway mpg of 20 do not add to the Infiniti's credibility ratings.

2018 Infiniti QX80 Competition

2018 Infiniti QX80 vs 2018 Cadillac Escalade

In this battle of the behemoths, it depends on your needs and desires to decide which one will suit you. The Cadillac has better acceleration and the largest engine which translates into a higher horsepower and torque as compared to the Infiniti.

Infinti has independent front and rear suspension which makes the car a joy to ride and offers better handling. The active suspension system of the Infiniti QX80 counters cornering forces actively and uses air springs too.

The QX 80 offers better off-roading capabilities, more storage, and towing prowess. The latter also comes at a lower price point than the Cadillac but you lose the front grille. Is it a choice you are ready to make?

2018 Infiniti QX80 vs 2018 Mercedes GLS 450

The QX 80 offers better specs on the sheet and in real life in almost all the aspect except the interior, Fuel economy and infotainment. The German luxury car is laden with some of the suave interiors and an ergonomic infotainment. For people concerned with mpg this is the car for you.

2018 Infiniti QX80 vs 2018 Lexus 570

The Infinti QX80 offers better handling than its competition and has better engine performance and acceleration time. The Lexus has the upper hand when it comes to interiors and the signature front grille.

2018 Infiniti QX80 Final Verdict

Offering more on the handling and riding front the QX80 is the obvious choice unless the interiors and infotainment bother you so much that you decide to overlook the other specs.
