Expert Review

CARHP Editorial August 13, 2019

The 2019 Jaguar F-type coupe starts at $61,745. It is powered by a 2.0L inline-4 boasting 296 horses and 295 pulling force mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, powering the rear wheels of the coupe. Badged as P300, the 2-door comes along with plenty of features and technology to go with the luxury marquee's thoroughbred coupe.

The F-type doesn't sit resting. Indeed, it belongs right in the thick of rivalry including the likes of Porsche 718 Cayman, and the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Let's see where the Jaguar ends up between these luxury-sport coupes.

2019 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe Features

Coming in 5 different trim levels in coupe and convertible style P300, P340, P380 R-Dynamic, R, and SVR - each further divide into 24 cars, Jaguar has a big convoy. Each trim also offers an 8-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Starting at $61,745, the P300 is the only trim to features a turbocharged 2.0L inline-4 cylinder mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. With the P340, P380 and R-Dynamic variants, the trims feature a supercharged 3.0L V6 engine with the engine boasting 340 hp for P340 while 380 horses on the other two configurations.

The R-Dynamic is basically a P380 but comes standard with few extra features to bridge the gap to the R trim. The R and SVR include a 5.0L V8 with 550 horses on the former and an increased output of 580 horses on the latter. These two configurations are the sportiest of the lot and come with a host of intended features alongside the manufacturer's prestigious luxury and opulence.

We recommend

The right F-Type is purely a personal choice for the difference between various configurations it offers boils down to your driving preference. Even the inline-4 is a good choice. Having said that, we'd recommend the R-Dynamic trim for it gives a sweet mix of a V6 under the hood along with extra additions of features in the bag.

Engine and Transmission

Under this beautiful is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Propelling the rear wheels of the F-Type, the machine under the hood is swift and rapid however feels a tad unrefined. Nonetheless its power delivery is brisk thanks to the 4-cylinders mighty torque. The feline's responsive gearbox is controlled via paddle-shifters and each clink and clank while the motors roar up is greatly tuned to providing excellent performance.

The P300's rivals stop it from having the last word; amongst the coupes coexist equal and more powerful alternatives with the likes of the 718 Cayman, Infiniti Q60, and the Corvette Stingray.

Acceleration

The F-Type's 4-cylinders sure knows how to spurt powerful delivery from the standstill, taking 5.5s from naught to 60 miles per hour while zipping the quarter mile in 14.1s. In spite of its brisk acceleration, the competitors propels quicker than it. Holding similar output, the 718 Cayman shaves half a second off the feline's coupe in both the tests. Undoubtedly, the Stingray's V8 thrashes the field with the zippiest performance, followed by the Challenger R/T.

Handling and Braking

Built keeping in mind comfort and athleticism, the Jaguar F-Type keeps up the potential between the lines of luxury and sport. While it's attuned towards a firm ride, the 2-seater glides over bumps and potholes easily without questions, and its commendable handling capability allow thrashing and aggressive driving, helping the mean spirited rider in you to take this feline to its limit. Its precise and responsive steering only elevates its entertaining ride while also staying exciting.

Otherwise, body roll is readily limited. The F-Type coupe is soldered to the roadway and barely comes across as a weakling. Tame it the way you want, the Jaguar is not the one to step down, whether that's cruising down the highway or a visit to your nearest groceries.

The large 14" and 13" brakes on the front and rear are good enough to earn the F-Type a commendable spot in its competition. At a panic brake test from 60 miles per hour to a standstill, it takes an excellent 101 feet. Neither mushy nor undulated, the pedals dispense with sensitive braking that are strong, reliable, and stable.

2019 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe Fuel Economy

The Jaguar's 4-cylinder quite frugal, gulping 23 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway. Its thrifty machine places the F-Type at the top of the competition, with the rivals closely competing right behind it. Needless to say, the V8 under the Stingray doesn't perform as bad as the competition, averaging 5 miles per gallon gulped more than the inline 4's amongst the rivals.

2019 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe Interior

The F-Type's interior is attractive and user-friendly, but outward visibility is limited all around. Climbing in and out of the cabin can be an issue for taller drivers, and wider folks will feel a bit confined once inside. Most cars in this class are easier to live with. -edmunds

Inside the F-Type P300, space is a compromise you will have to make while aesthetically paralleling luxury and sport. Sewn leather seats alongside leather trim and quality finish make up the cabin. Seating 2, the posh and cozy seats are comfortable but headspace and legroom confine tall or thick passengers to a restricted enclosure.

The low-build of the F-Type poses a problem for tall passengers to get in or out, and the confined space inside it would cause a bit of discomfort for someone like Terry Crews. The enclosed structure next to the thick front pillars and high-mounted rear windows alongside a drop in the front nose, all combine to induce another issue - poor outward visibility.

Interior Features

The list of interior features in the Jaguar include

  • Overhead lighting console
  • Electrically adjustable steering column with memory
  • 12-way electric front seats with memory
  • Single-zone Climate Control
  • Interior lighting
  • Deployable front air vents

Infotainment System

While seemingly reasonable cabin gives way to a decent interior, the infotainment system on the Jaguar F-Type is another case altogether. The latest 10" touchscreen with navigation system is an upgrade from the previous year, but is still not the coupe's forte resulting in mediocre performance and user interface. Also, another big downfall is that the trim doesn't include voice recognition. Adding to the dismay, the technology of the system feels inferior to its rivals. Some standard features include

  • Sirius XM Satellite radio & HD radio
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Navigation Pro system
  • Meridian Sound System

Cargo Volume

Practicality is not really the F-Type's forte. Welcome a paltry 7.3 cubic feet for storage in the back while its rivals such as the 16.2 cubic feet of the Dodge Challenger relatively better and laudable for a coupe. Porsche's 718 Cayman holds 15 cubic feet sharing the sweet spot with the Stingray.

We hope to age as well as the 2019 Jaguar F-Type. -thecarconnection

The new F-Type comes virtually unchanged from its previous iteration. Sat alongside 4 18" alloy wheels, the coupe is a modern design infused with classic touch. The feline's craftsmanship is delicately moulded with smooth character lines and subtle detail, all culminating to the elegance of the aerodynamic sculpture of the 2-door.

When viewed from any angle, the sleek and sexiness is tasteful and profound. Measuring 176" in length, the F-Type coupe perches 4" from the ground, shorter than any most coupes in the competition and weighs 3500 pounds.

2019 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe Safety

Offered with aplenty safety equipments alongside technology, the feline makes sure to keep the driver as well as its passengers protected. The manufacture has kitted the F-Type with affluent and advanced standard safety features such as

2019 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe Competition

Jaguar F-Type vs Chevrolet Corvette

Monstrosity seems to favour the Chevrolet Corvette more than the F-Type loud and bashing engine squealing the tires on the track with roaring exhaust rumble. The Corvette pulls many tricks up its sleeve when it comes to performance and hands down has the best interior yet. However the Jaguar is an English snob with pops and rumbles of its own but just not as quick or zippy as the Corvette.

What it does exceedingly better is show what opulence and luxurious the interior can be, something the Amercian lags behind. All in all, the Corvette is your go-to if performance over luxury matters. Else, the Jaguar is a rather refined Englishman.

Jaguar F-Type vs Porsche Cayman

The Porsche Cayman is the budget alternative to the F-Type. While both offer a 4-cylinder under the hood, the Porsche performs just a tad better than the feline coupe. The German's handling is more refined and has better grip as compared to the F-Type. However the Feline relatively is also an excellent performer while whizzing on the track. Both the coupe's house gorgeous and opulent interior and with either choice, you can't go wrong.

2019 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe Final Verdict

The sexy feline gets right down to business with its head-turning aesthetic and great packaging. Offering a mighty powered inline-4 powertrain under the hood along with luxurious and gorgeous interior makes it seem like the Jaguar is a worthy buy.

However it comes with a substandard trunk and interior space, while its infotainment is subpar as compared to its rivals nor is it frugal. Yet for the price it ships, one can't go wrong with the F-Type. It indeed is a worthy buy, especially considering how exotic it is in terms of commonplace as compared to its more established mainstream rivals.
