Expert Review

Jaguar is definitely not the only one to manufacture executive sedans that are opulent and powerful at the same time. Further, when it comes to the Jaguar’s XF Diesel Sedan, the three vehicles that act as the strongest rivals are namely the Cadillac CTS, BMW 530i and the Audi A6.

Features

Adding to the advantages of the 2018 Jaguar XF Diesel is its three distinct trims that are namely 20d Premium, 20d Prestige, and 20d R-Sport. All the three trims carry the same 2.0L engine and the differences are only feature-based. In addition, all the three trims are available in RWD and AWD drivetrain options, where the AWD variants cost $3,000 more than the ones with RWD.

The 20d Premium is the entry-level variant of the XF Diesel Sedan range and gets a price tag of nearly $51,265. For attracting the users, the 20d premium offers numerous smart features such as climate control, cruise control, keyless ignition, speed sensitive volume control and self-leveling headlights.

Moving further up the trim table, one will find the 20d Prestige trim of Jaguar XF Sedan whose price is set at $55,725. Upgrading to the 20d Prestige means getting more features that include front and rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

With a staggering MSRP of $59,625, the 20d R-sport sits atop the trim levels of the 2018 Jaguar XF Diesel Sedan. For the extra price, it offers some advanced features like 360-degree parking aid, cornering lights, LED headlights, sport front seats, and blind spot and lane departure warning system.

We Recommend

From our perspective, the intermediate variant 20d Prestige will be the best among the three trims. The reason behind the 20d Prestige trim to be an ideal choice is that its features perfectly defines the comfort and convenience that one seeks from an executive level sedan.

Engine

“On the highway, there’s more cabin noise than you may expect from a Jaguar (especially when powered by the diesel engine), but it is still relaxing. The pleasing suspension modes range from comfortably supple to athletic and snappy.”- cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

The powerhouse of the 2018 Jaguar XF Diesel comprises of a 2.0-Liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which is capable of producing 180 hp of power along with a massive torque delivery of 318 lbs.-ft. Furthermore, the engine is pair off with an 8-speed automatic transmission for effortless and accurate gear shifts.

At the competition side, all the three sedans have the same capacity 2.0-Liter engines like the Jaguar XF. Still, the horsepower delivered by all the three sedans is significantly higher as compared to the XF, with Cadillac CTS at the top due to its 268 hp of power. On the other hand, when it comes to torque, the Jaguar’s 318 ft.-lbs. easily outshines the torque delivered by the competitors.

Both the Cadillac CTS and BMW530i employs a common 8-speed automatic gearbox while the Audi A6 Premium Plus comes with 7-speed manual as its standard transmission.

Acceleration

As the Jaguar XF’s engine has a low horsepower rating, its acceleration may become disappointing especially to people who love to hit the throttle hard. Furthermore, the XF Diesel Sedan requires at least 8.2 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph, which is really bad when compared with the acceleration figures of the rivals. Indeed, the BMW 530i is the quickest with its 0-60 mph time being only 6 seconds.

The quarter-mile time of Jaguar XF Diesel is 16.7 seconds, which is also dissatisfying. Nevertheless, its annual emission of 5.9 tons is lowest among the competition and is definitely a thing to cheer upon.

Ride and Handling

To be honest, the diesel version of the 2018 Jaguar XF does not deliver the thrilling acceleration but the sedan is definitely a fun to drive. Unlike the gasoline variants, the Diesel variants of the XF Sedan only offers a 2.0L V4 engine. At normal speeds, the agility of the XF is satisfactory, but at higher speeds, overtaking other vehicles becomes very difficult.

The power steering employed in the Sedan is responsive and allows the vehicle to maneuver easily. Furthermore, the stability and traction control features of the Jaguar XF make sure that the vehicle does not slip off its intended path while moving at high speeds. In addition, the cabin of the sedan is isolated well from the outside noise and delivers a promising comfort level.

Braking

Allowing the driver to have a better control over the motion of the Jaguar XF are its 12.8-inch brakes at both the front and rear tires. Additionally, the brake pedal of the Sedan is soft and requires less pushing power. Looking at the other three rivaling sedans, only the Audi A6 has bigger brakes than the Jaguar XF diesel.

Fuel Economy

The 2018 Jaguar XF Diesel Sedan’s combined fuel economy of 35 MPG shows its prowess in developing highly fuel-efficient engines. Looking at the rivals, the Cadillac CTS, BMW 530i and Audi A6 have combined fuel economies of 25, 27 and 28 MPG respectively that not even stands near the XF’s 35 MPG.

“Top-quality materials extend throughout, giving the interior an appropriately luxurious feel. Infotainment is thoughtfully designed but lacks the finished details of competitors. What really sets the XF apart from the class is its trunk, which is comparatively massive.”- Edmunds

Exterior

“Jaguar’s 2018 XF sedan isn't a radical styling departure from the previous version, and we're okay with that. The latest XF maintains the same basic profile, with the long hood and short trunk emphasizing the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. The grille is properly upright for better aerodynamics and to better tie it in with the Jaguar XE and revised XJ sedans.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

Analyzing the exterior measurements of the 2018 Jaguar XF Diesel, its length, width and height are 195.0, 78.2 and 57.4 inches respectively. Equating the dimensions of the XF with the rivals, the XF comes out to be the widest sedan while the Cadillac CTS is the longest and the Audi A6 is the tallest.

  • Signature ‘J’ Blade LED DRLs
  • Double roundel taillights

Competition

Jaguar XF Diesel VS Cadillac CTS Sedan 4dr

The America-made Cadillac CTS gives a tough competition to the Jaguar XF especially with its relatively lower price tag of $46,295. On the upside, the CTS offers better engine power, acceleration, and cabin space. However, one has to compromise with other parameters such as engine torque, annual emissions, fuel economy, and cargo capacity.

Jaguar XF Diesel VS BMW 530i

BMW 530i Sedan is yet another major rival of the 2018 Jaguar XF Diesel, which comes at a price of $52,650. The 530i is no less when it comes to delivering impressive features and performance. In fact, 530i is a better sedan than the Jaguar XF when it comes to 0-60 mph acceleration, quarter mile time, ground clearance and front row space.

Jaguar XF Diesel VS Audi A6 2.0 TFSI Premium Plus 4dr

Audi’s A6 is also capable of giving 2018 XF Sedan a hard time with its better on-road performance. Moreover, when compared to the XF, it offers more ground clearance and bigger brakes than the XF Sedan. On the Contrary, the Jaguar XF Sedan easily outperforms the A6 in terms of annual emission, mileage and cargo space.

Final Verdict

Being an executive class sedan and even more, a Jaguar, one has to spend a large sum of money to afford the XF Diesel Sedan. Unlike many other diesel sedans that make a lot of noise, the Jaguar XF is pretty quiet during its operation. The main highlight that makes the Jaguar XF a highly recommended sedan is its highly efficient engine. The fuel efficiency of the XF Sedan is exceptional and it also emits less pollution than many other vehicles of its class.
