Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Since the car did go through a major overhaul last year, it is expected to remain mostly unchanged, bringing in minor improvements to the infotainment interface and driver assistance packages. For the forthcoming 2022 model year, the Jaguar XF R-Dynamic will be available only in a single trim, namely the P300R. Chopping off the supercharged V6, the 2022 R-Dynamic will solely sport a 2.0L turbo-4 with prices starting from around $50,595. We’ll also cover the changes that the 2022 XF R-Dynamic will bring while comparing it against the likes of Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Features

The 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic would serve as the performance version of the regular XF sedan and will be available in a standalone trim named SE, specifically the P300 AWD. The sticker price should start close to $50,595 for the 2022 model year. The XF R-Dynamic is strictly available in all-wheel-drive configuration, which might be a bit of a turn-off to some enthusiasts. For the price, it is heavily loaded with standard features.

For starters, the 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic comes with Full LED exterior lighting with signature running lamps and gets shot with 19-inch alloy wheels on all four corners. As for the inside, you get perforated grained leather seats with 16-way power adjustability and memory function along with the steering and driver-side rearview mirror. It also comes packed with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and the biggest in-class 11.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Small touches like the illuminated metal tread plate and the interior ambient lighting adds to the overall appeal.

Which trim should you buy?

The 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic would be offered as a standalone option which includes the AWD system as standard. If you find the standard equipment not appealing enough, Jaguar also offers a wide range of optional packages to choose from. To name some, there’s Dynamic Handling pack ($1350), Cold climate pack ($700), Convenience package ($1000), and a plethora of options like 20-inch wheels, additional leather trim inside, faux-suede headliner, and ventilated front seats with massage and heated rear seats.

Release Date

Since we do not expect any kind of changes in the forthcoming model, there will be no official launches as such. Rather, the car would receive a silent change from 2021 to 2022, the transition expected by the fall of this year.

Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Since there are no mechanical upgrades, the 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic will continue with the same 2.0L Turbo Inline-4 unit that cranks out 296-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The XF R-dynamic features an all-wheel-drive system as standard, while the transmission duties are handled by an 8-speed automatic gearbox. This unit does an excellent job in delivering blistering quick shifts and smooth acceleration every single time. The drive modes do bring a noticeable difference in how the shifts take place, and in the normal mode, we would have liked it to respond a bit better.

2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic Sedan driving view

The 2022 R-Dynamic sports an extra 50-hp to the standard XF sedan and sprints from standstill to 60-mph mark in just 5.8 seconds, again shaving off nearly 0.7-seconds. The quarter-mile comes up in just 13.6 seconds, and the car will push to its electronically limited 130 mph top speed quite effortlessly, impressive for a 4-door. The ride quality remains identical to the current model year. It can vary from being nice and smooth in comfort mode, and get a bit taught in the S model. Also, the exhaust note is some of the best that we have heard from a 4-pot, at least on a factory spec car.

The 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic poses as the performance-based version of the standard XF offering. The tweaked suspension and altered ride height do differentiate it from the regular road-going version. The low-slung and wide stance make the Jaguar handle well around the corners, without suffering major body rolls. The 8-speed automatic transmission is quick to respond to the throttle, and the all-wheel-drive system does add that extra bit of traction when leaving a corner.

The Jaguar XF R-Dynamic has a sole purpose, to bury the German versions of the competitors, and it stands to its motive. Being the lightest and with the all-wheel drivetrain to its advantage, the R-Dynamic sedan offers quick acceleration numbers. The Audi posts an identical 5.8 seconds in standing 60 miles an hour but falls behind as the speeds increase. The BMW and the Mercedes follow close by with 5.9 and 6.1 seconds, respectively. Also, both these cars come with optional AWD trims but are left out in this comparison to keep the prices consistent.

Fuel Economy

2.0/10

The 2.0L turbo 4-pot banger continues to be the sole engine option for the 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic, and hence, the economy will remain identical as the 2021 model year. In that case, the 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic would be expected to deliver an EPA-estimated 22/32/26 mpg on city/highway/combined driving conditions. It will also fit the same 19.5-gallon fuel tank that would assist the sedan to stretch the cruise for more than 585 miles on the highways.

The BMW 5 Series sedan takes the podium top with slightly better figures in all driving conditions. But since it has a smaller fuel tank, it slips to second place when it comes to the maximum range as the Audi boasts a bigger 19.3-gallon gas tank. The 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic, though, slips to the bottom when it comes to individual figures, possibly due to the higher state of engine tune in comparison. With the biggest fuel tank in the lot, the XF R-Dynamic does manage to close the gap between the competition when it comes to the overall range.

Interior

9.0/10

Recently redesigned in 2021, the 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic is expected to have no major changes to the interior. Also, there’s no need for any updates since the interior is minimal yet tantalizing. Jaguar calls the interiors a “tranquil sanctuary,” and we don't disagree with the claim. The major issues like quality and tech bits have been resolved and the cabin sits as major competition to proposed German rivals. There’s ample room in both front and rear, with doors opening wide to offer the easiest ingress and egress. The 16-way power front seats are highly supportive, and the bolsters support the occupant body for the best levels of comfort.

The center console has seen major changes in the 2021 redesign where the old rotary gear selector has been replaced by a squat shifter with cricket ball stitching. It’s flanked with push-button start and driving mode selector on respective sides. An 11.4-inch infotainment screen takes most of the space on the center console, and a 12.3 driver’s display replaces conventional analog gauges. The cargo space would remain the same at 10.5 cu-ft. But in certain circumstances, the rear seats can be folded down to prioritize cargo over occupants.

The 2022 XF R-Dynamic has the smallest cargo capacity in competition, measuring at just 10.5 cu ft. Meanwhile, the BMW 5 Series offers the maximum cargo space at 18.7 cu.ft., which is by far the biggest in class. Both Audi and the Mercedes stay in the middle, sporting about 13.7 cu.ft. and 13.1 cu.ft. of usable space in the trunk. Some standout interior features expected on the 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic are:

  • 16-way power-adjustable front leather seats with heating function
  • Power tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Alcantara headliner
  • 12.3 digital instrument cluster
  • Grained, perforated leather upholstery
  • Driver seats, mirror, and steering wheel memory setting

What’s there to keep you entertained?

When it comes to infotainment, the 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic would feature the recently updated 11.4-inch touchscreen. It is easily the biggest and brightest display that we have tested so far. That said, even though it has a smooth interface, we found it hard to navigate through and find certain controls. Also, the screen is a fingerprint and dust magnet which requires a wipe down almost every day if you are someone who frequently uses the touch screen. It features the new Pivi Pro software and also incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Apart from this, you also get a digital instrument panel, a 17-speaker audio system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a Head-up display.

Standout infotainment features expected in the new model are:

  • 11.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 12-speaker Meridian premium audio system
  • Wireless charging
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • 12.3-inch customizable digital gauge display

Exterior

8.0/10

The 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic will remain unchanged since it received a major interior and exterior overhaul recently. Following the redesign, the Jaguar sedan looks jaw-dropping and insanely stunning. The newly designed grille still holds the Jaguar logo with pride, while the Double J signature running lights inside look sleek and are mesmerizing.

2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic Sedan

On the sides, the sheet metals have no play, just a simple and elegant surface that gives out a prominent finish and presence. Towards the rear, the “leaping Jaguar” logo is flanked by a stylish LED taillight design. It has a fake diffuser thing going below, but there is no presence of a prominent exhaust tip, baffling for a car with such a sporty demeanor. The 19” wheels make the overall proportions right and take on the stance game spot on.

The Jaguar has its unique presence and class, and in the crowd of German sedans, the Jag stands out by being elegant and sophisticated. BMW is the largest car in the lot today, measuring 195.8 inches when it comes to length and thereby being the one with the longest wheelbase as well. It is also the tallest one at 58.2 inches. On the other hand, the Jag XF R-Dynamic is the widest in the lot at 78 inches. Standout exterior features include:

  • LED headlights, taillights & DRLs
  • Power-folding, auto-dimming exterior mirrors
  • Dual exhaust chrome tips
  • Black grille with chrome surround
  • Adaptive dampers
  • Rear spoiler
  • Red brake calipers
  • 19-inch 5-spoke gloss silver alloy wheels

Safety

4.0/10

The 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic would also receive top-notch safety aids and sturdy build quality like the current model year. The light yet robust aluminum structure excels at absorbing major impacts without passing it to the cabin where the occupants are seated. The current model year has not been crash-tested by either NHTSA or IIHS, but with the safety standards Jaguar has kept, one can easily rest assured of class-leading safety. Standout safety features will include:

  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Automated Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Front & Rear Parking Sensors
  • Driver Drowsiness Monitoring

Competition

2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic vs 2022 Audi A6 45TFSI

The Jaguar XF R-Dynamic offers elegance, while the Audi A6 rolls with a sophisticated style. The Jag is more powerful and also quicker off the line, but the Audi wins at being more efficient. Both these rivals have first-class interior quality, but since the XF R-Dynamic has been recently redesigned with major upgrades and also offers a plethora of equipment as standard, and that too at a starting lower price, it comes out as the better pick.

2022 Audi A6 45TFSI

2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic vs 2022 BMW 530i

The BMW 530i is renowned for its exhilarating driving dynamics and engagement. While the Jaguar XF R-Dynamic does come in close, it fails to match the levels of the 530i. Also, the BMW 5 Series is also more economical and is the biggest car here. That said, the Jaguar can easily lure buyers with its elegant interior layout, but we'll suggest you go for the BMW 530i.

2022 BMW 530i

2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz E350

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has more advanced and sophisticated infotainment, and the interior looks mesmerizing too. Similarly, the Jag is also plush, and since it’s a better value for money, it gets an edge over the pricey Mercedes. However, the E350 triumphs when it comes to ride and comfort, leaving the Jaguar in its dust in this department. In the end, we'll let you decide on what your priorities are.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E350

Final Verdict

There is no doubt that the 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic is an elegant blend of luxury and performance, but the German rivals have been perfecting this recipe for years and have found their own niche in the market. Also, Jaguar is not one of those brands with any good predictable reliability ratings. The 2022 Jaguar XF R-Dynamic does turn heads with tantalizing looks and beautifully appointed interiors, but that is not enough to earn a prospective buyer’s trust. While a majority of buyers would still go with the German rivals, one can easily stand out by opting for this luxurious sedan, that's for sure.
