Expert Review

CARHP Editorial August 14, 2019

The 2019 Jaguar XJR575 is offered in one trim only. The XJR575 is powered by a supercharged 5 Liter V8 (575hp). The engine is mated to an 8 speed automatic gearbox and offers a lot of punch and thrill.

Other cars in this segment include the Porsche Panamera GTS, BMW M760i xDrive and Mercedes AMG S63 that offer better performance but are costlier.

2019 Jaguar XJ XJR575 Sedan Features

The XJR575 is available in only one trim and comes with a 5 Liter V8 producing 575hp. The XJR575 is available only in long wheelbase with only a rear wheel drive option.

The car comes with an 8 Speed ZF automatic transmission and offer plenty of features as standard but the XJR575 takes it up a notch with all the extra features such as perforated soft grain leather sport styled seats and quad sports exhaust but all of it comes at a hefty premium which is still lower when compared to other sporty luxury sedans offered by the Germans.

Recommendation

The XJR575 is only offered in one trim so there's not a lot to choose from.

2019 Jaguar XJ XJR575 Sedan Engine

Squeeze the accelerator to the floor and Jaguar's big sedan does a convincing impression of the company's classic Leaper hood ornament, lunging forward and streaking across the landscape. The world beyond the glass blurs, the supercharged V-8 bellows, and the thrust compresses your guts. - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The bulky looking Jaguar XJR575 is power by a Supercharged 5 Liter V8 equipped with a ZF 8 speed automatic transmission with aluminium shift paddles. This configuration is good for 575 horsepower and 517lb-ft of torque.

The Supercharged V8 provides plenty of torque and power once it gets going and the engine can tackle twisty canyon roads without breaking a sweat while at the same time, it can offer a smooth ride for long highway journeys minus the drama, unless you want it.

In it's competition, the BMW M760i and the Mercedes AMG S63 provide extra horsepower and torque along with an all wheel drive system but at the same time, they are less pocket friendly.

Acceleration

Acceleration can be an important factor while buying a sporty full sized sedan and while the Jaguar is not as fast a sports car, it is not a car slow either. It puts respectable numbers when it comes to acceleration.

The 5 Liter V8 can launch the Jaguar from a standstill to 60mph in 4.2 seconds. When compared to rivals, the Jaguar is slower by some margin. Even the less powerful Panamera GTS is faster. This can be due to the fact that the Jaguar is rear wheel drive only whereas all the other cars in comparison are all wheel drive.

Braking

The exact braking figures of the car are not available, but considering the dimensions of the car, we expect it to be at par with the competitors.

Ride and Handling

The 2019 Jaguar XJR575 offers sharp handling which makes the driver forget about the dimensions of the car. The car comes with an aluminium intensive structure which makes it lighter than its rivals. The fact that it is only rear wheel drive also contributes to making it lighter. The XJR575 offers nimble handling and it's athleticism only adds to the experience. The Jaguar is not a barge and it does not feel like one.

2019 Jaguar XJ XJR575 Sedan Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is not the top most priority when it comes to buying a sports sedan. But still, the 5 Liter V8 does 18mpg combined which is still better than the BMW M760i. 23 Miles to the gallon on a highway cruise is also impressive considering the size and performance of the car. The Jag lags behind in city driving where the Panamera excels.

2019 Jaguar XJ XJR575 Sedan Interior

The Jaguar's interior is upscale and attractive. The gloss black touches in the interior look smart. But, Jaguar only offers plastic and leather in the interior whereas rivals also offer wooden inserts at some places. The jaguar looks upscale and smart on the inside but it does not feel plush - it feels plasticy. BMW, Porsche and Mercedes - all three offer way better interior design and quality.

Jaguar also does not let you forget that you are sitting in a very special, very powerful car. 575 badging is literally everywhere. It is embroidered in the seats, it is written on the dashboard and on the doorsills.

Seating and Comfort

The Jaguar can seat up to five people. Both front and rear seats come with heating and cooling as standard. Perforated soft grain leather seats also come as standard. The biggest upgrade from the R sport is the extra legroom. As the XJR575 is available only in long wheelbase configuration, the rear seat passengers get extra legroom to stretch their legs on long journeys. The air suspension system also adds to the comfort level.

Infotainment

The Jaguar comes with a 10 inch infotainment system that is supported by a Meridian Sound System with 20 speakers and 2 subwoofers. Rivals such as BMW and Mercedes offer better infotainment systems which are smoother and quicker than the one offered by Jaguar. The appearance and usability is also not at par with the Germans but the display quality is good enough.

Some features of the infotainment system -

  • 10 Inch display
  • Satellite navigation
  • Wi-Fi hotspot and bluetooth connectivity
  • Meridian Sound System with 20 speaker and 2 subwoofers
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Interactive Drivers Display

Cargo space

The British sedan offers 16.9 cubic feet of cargo volume which is less when compared to its German counterparts that can fit at least two suitcases more than the Jag. Not just the small size but also narrow opening hinder the practicality of the trunk. Electric trunk lid is standard.

Dimension and Weight

2019 Jaguar XJ XJR575 Sedan Competition

2019 Jaguar XJR575 Vs 2019 Porsche Panamera GTS AWD

The Panamera starts at around $128,000 whereas the Jaguar starts at around $123,000. The Panamera has a low power output and weighs more than the Jaguar but it is still quicker off the line to 60mph because of its AWD system. Porsche Panamera is the only sedan in this range that offers the practicality of a hatchback - the rear seats can be folded down to release a huge amount of cargo space. The interior quality on the Porsche is also better than the Jaguar by some margin - the inside of a Panamera just looks very rich when compared to the Jaguar. Comfort is at par in both the cars as the seats provide a lot of support and comfort. Both the cars also come with air suspensions as standard.

2019 Jaguar XJR575 Vs 2019 BMW M760i

When it comes to comfort, brands like BMW set the benchmark and so does the M760i. It is the perfect combination of power, speed, technology and comfort. It is powered by a V12 over the Jaguar's V8. The V12 does result is a lower fuel economy but the German makes up for it in performance and luxury. The BMW is also quicker than the Jaguar by some margin and has tech that is miles ahead when compared to the XJR575.

2019 Jaguar XJR575 Vs 2019 Mercedes AMG S63

Mercedes is another automaker that sets the standard for luxury. The performance version of the luxurious S class adds performance to the name without cutting out on any luxury. For the 2018 model year, Mercedes installed an all new engine and gearbox to the S63, making it even better and quicker in every sense. Mercedes's COMAND infotainment system is also way more advanced than Jaguar's Incontrol Touch Pro.

2019 Jaguar XJ XJR575 Sedan Final Verdict

The 2019 Jaguar XJR575 is definitely cheaper than its competitors but all of them can easily justify the premium as they provide better performance and better comfort and a better overall package. Even when it comes to interior, tech, quality and materials - the Jaguar offers the least appealing package. The infotainment system does not even come close when compared to the rivals. The rival brands also offer superior interior quality. Jaguar XJR575 is just not a good overall package. It needs to improve in almost every department. It is fast but it is not quick. The gloss black plastic touches look good but cannot be justified at this price. It is a cool looking car, it looks sporty but that is all it is good at. The Porsche Panamera, BMW M760i and the Mercedes AMG S63 do cost more than the Jaguar but they are more value for your money.
