Jeep as a brand has bestowed upon us some fantastic vehicles and the Jeep Cherokee has served to be one such iteration. Although the elder sibling, the Grand Cherokee is the one the most people tend to lock their eyes on, the Cherokee might just be the most underrated vehicle for this manufacturer. In a segment that consists of dignified mall crawlers, the Cherokee offers the consumers to actually experience the Jeep life which genuinely intrigues us.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Features

The Jeep Cherokee has had a rather comprehensive line-up of trims and even for 2019, the Cherokee continues to offer five main trim and four other sub-trim options for the consumers which could feel a little excessive. The main trim options offered with the Cherokee are Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, Trailhawk, and the top-of-the-line Overland. The special editions and sub trim options include Altitude, Upland, High Altitude, and Trailhawk Elite. The hierarchy consists of the following trims in their respective order:

Which Trim should you buy?

Trying to decipher the entire line-up of the Jeep Cherokee could prove to be a little cumbersome but if we were to recommend just one trim only, it would have to be the Trailhawk. Not only does it get the meatier V6 under the hood as standard, but it also gets the more advanced AWD system that is coupled with a rear locking differential. The Trailhawk also gets a slew of trail-rated features such as an off-road suspension, couple-inch lift, and all-terrain tires. If one wants, $500 could also upgrade you to the turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but we don’t think that would be necessary.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Engine and Performance

The base 2.4 L Four Cylinder that is available in the Latitude trim is supposed to be avoided like the plague. The 180 bhp and 171 lbs. ft. of torque that it generates feel just too inadequate for the bulk of the Cherokee period. The low torque output also means that the 2019 Jeep Cherokee does feel sluggish even when doing city speeds and overtaking is a chore in itself. The 3.2 L V6 pushes out 271 bhp and 231 lbs-ft. of torque though is a different proposition altogether. The Cherokee feels instantly better off the line as it is eager to move when the right foot is flexed.

Gone is the choked-up feeling and the Cherokee feels rather great to drive. If one wants an even more exciting setup, the optional turbocharged 2.0L 4 Cylinder which although has a similar 270 bhp output but bumps the torque output to 294 lbs. ft. which is definitely noticeable. The 9 Speed Automatic that is standard is a charm in itself as it is buttery smooth in operation and doesn’t seem to crank even when going off-road. All in all, we would recommend you to skip out on the base engine and all should be smooth sailing.

When looking at the figures of the lot, it is surprising to see that even the base engine of the Cherokee does have a considerable leg-up when it comes to performance. Although on paper the base engine might seem enough to some, we would still highly recommend you to opt for the V6 instead. The Tiguan might be the slightly more powerful option, but the Cherokee is definitely the one that dominates the speed game.

How well does the 2019 Jeep Cherokee handle?

The Cherokee can appear to be quite a surprise for many when behind the wheel as it is deceptively agile and sporty. The steering rack is very precise and the Cherokee is quick to switch directions. The proportions of the Cherokee seem to melt away when you start to drive a little spiritedly which is a great confidence booster. Even though the Cherokee is a heavy machine, it surprises with its great and sporty handling.

The Ride Quality is also great by Jeep standards as the Cherokee feels planted on the road with decent suspension over broken roads. The deeper trenches do catch its suspension out but for the most part, the occupants stay in relative comfort. Although a little vertical movement is present, the body roll is thoroughly well contained. The Cherokee is also a good performer off the road and the Trailhawk trim enhances the off-road capabilities very much.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Braking Performance

Although many Crossovers and SUVs do struggle when braking is concerned, the Cherokee is on the fairer side of the spectrum. The brake pedal feel is predictable and devoid of the usual spongy feel that is common in most high riders. The braking potential is also quite decent as the Cherokee comes to a halt in a sure-footed manner. The Cherokee stops from 60mph at just 116 ft. This is a superb distance and is among the best in the segment.

Even with significantly smaller brakes, the Honda manages to out-brake the Cherokee by just a foot making it the better braking vehicle but under practical applications, we doubt if anybody would be able to notice the difference. The Tiguan is the worst performer even while having slightly larger rotors in the front. The Cherokee performs impressively in the braking department.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Fuel Economy

Even with the base engine which is the most in-efficient of the lot, the Cherokee delivers about average fuel economy figures. With a claimed 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, the Cherokee falls short of the class leaders and even with the most fuel-efficient turbo 4 banger, the combined cycle doesn’t manage to cross 25 mpg which is a couple of steps behind the segment leaders.

Range (city/highway)(miles)

Although both the Chevy Equinox and Honda CRV have better EPA estimates than the Cherokee, with the help of a much larger fuel tank it does claim the top spot when the range is concerned. Although the Cherokee would return poorer efficiency, one would still not have to make too many trips to the gas station. The Equinox with a slightly larger fuel capacity delivers the most range and happens to be the best option in terms of fuel efficiency.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Interior

The interior of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is a typical FCA affair on the inside as there is the varied use of hard touch plastics that can be spotted but for the most part, it is an ok affair. Don’t expect luxury touches from the Cherokee’s cabin and you are going to be all set with a rather ergonomic dash and cabin design. The overall design of the interior is pretty well appointed and as one climbs the trim ladder, the plushness does get better as more soft-touch materials are introduced.

The seats provided are also on the wider end which makes them generally very accommodating although at the cost of a little bolstering. The sliding rear seats on the higher ends models provide an extra layer of customization for the rear passengers which isn’t a very common feature. The cabin proportions can also be dubbed highly accommodating since even taller passengers fit with ease. The Cherokee has a considerably lower cargo capacity of 24.6 cu-ft which is much lower than the competition.

Cargo Capacity (cubic feet)

The CR-V and Volkswagen Tiguan manage to annihilate the competition when it comes to the cargo space on offer in the segment. Both the vehicles offer exceptional boot space while the Cherokee comes in dead last. The roomier proportions on the Cherokee are genuinely appreciated but the lack of cargo space in front of rivals could be a deal-breaker for some. Otherwise, the Cherokee is a spacious and comfortable option with a good quality interior. Some of the interior features in the 2019 Jeep Cherokee include:

  • Memory for Radio, Driver Seat settings
  • 8 way Power Adjustable Driver Seats and Lumbar Support
  • Leather Seating and Upholstery
  • 60/40 Split-Folding Rear Seats
  • Ventilated Front Seats
  • Start/Stop System
  • Ambient LED Lighting
  • Sun Visors with illuminated vanity mirrors
  • 12V Power Outlet in Instrument Panel and Cargo Area

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 7 Inch UConnect system on the Cherokee has been refreshed for the 2019 MY and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have been added in as standard to make it that bit more usable. The user interface and touch response of this system have always been great and with the newer update, the system glides through its interface.

The standard 6 speaker audio system is also very potent and has some appreciable sound quality but the 9 speaker setup on the higher trims is the one that literally booms. The higher trims also get a bigger 8.4-inch display with satellite navigation which is otherwise identical to its smaller sibling. The upgraded driver’s display on the top-tier trims also does elevate the tech quotient of the cabin but it isn’t something that we would deem extremely necessary. Some of the more notable infotainment features are mentioned below:

  • Android Auto and Apple Car Play Compatibility
  • 7" Touchscreen Infotainment System
  • SiriusXM Radio and Travel Link with 5 years Subscription
  • 6/ 9 Speaker Music System with Subwoofer
  • Bluetooth with Integrated Voice Command

2019 Jeep Cherokee Exterior

When it debuted, the Cherokee’s exterior design did receive some mixed reactions from the audience as it is definitely on the quirkier side. As time has progressed, the design seems to have grown on people as more and more manufacturers are incorporating similar facia designs on their newer crossovers. The quirky design does seem to work for the Cherokee’s benefit now as with the newer front-end design for 2019 MY, it does look quite striking.

The exterior of the Jeep Cherokee differs according to the trim and packages are chosen. The wheels on the Cherokee are 17-inch ones in the lower trims and get upgraded to 18-inch ones in the Limited trim while the top-end Overland trim gets 19-inch wheels. The Cherokee is definitely not the most beautiful looking one in the segment, but it has a distinct look that might seem attractive to some.

Ground clearance (in)

Wheelbase (in)

The higher ground clearance available on the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is a testament to its much superior off-road performance when compared to the rest. The shorter wheelbase also makes it a tad bit more maneuverable when going off-road which can’t be discounted. The heavier weight is a disadvantage when wading in snow and slush but the Cherokee still shines through due to its more sophisticated AWD system. Some of the other exterior features that make the Jeep Cherokee stand out are as follows:

  • LED Headlamps with Led Daytime Running Lamps
  • LED Fog Lamps
  • Dual rear bright in-fascia exhaust tips
  • 19-inch Polished Aluminum with Hyper Black-Painted Pockets
  • Acoustic Windshield
  • Front Suspension Skid Plate
  • Fuel Tank Skid Plate shield

2019 Jeep Cherokee Safety

With a 2019 Top Safety Pick Award from the IIHS and a 4 Star Safety Rating from the NHTSA. We are confident to state that the Jeep Cherokee is well built enough to keep your loved ones safe even in case of a tragedy. It comes as standard with a superb set of safety features. The 10 airbags on offer are a highlight when compared to other vehicles on the road and the following active safety features only add up on top of its credentials:

  • Rear View Camera
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Trailer Sway Control
  • Blind Spot Monitors
  • Rear Cross-Path detection

2019 Jeep Cherokee Competition

2019 Jeep Cherokee vs 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan

If you are looking for great interior quality, refinement, and overall fantastic on-road manners, one must not look any further than the Volkswagen Tiguan. The Tiguan is genuinely a fantastic machine on the road but the moment you bring into the picture of foraying into the rough lands, the Cherokee sweeps out its competition. Between the two it is more of a choice between your own priorities as one is unbeatable off the road while the other is very sophisticated when kept on the road.

2019 Jeep Cherokee vs 2019 Chevrolet Equinox

The Chevrolet Equinox offers great value for the average American buyer but its sheer popularity can also be a downside to some. Although the Equinox is a very practical and efficient vehicle, it lacks any sort of character and off-road pedigree which are the core strengths of the Jeep. Choosing between the two, we would recommend you to go for the Cherokee if you have any sort of affinity towards the outdoors but the Equinox should suffice if urban duties are what your next purchase is going to be relegated to.

2019 Jeep Cherokee vs 2019 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is one of the best-selling vehicles in the segment due to its fuss-free ownership experience and family hauler-oriented mechanicals and interiors. As has been the trend, the CR-V is much better than the Cherokee when we take into account efficiency and daily driveability, but the Cherokee’s other side is something that the CR-V can’t match up to in the slightest which makes the CR-V only a one-trick pony that can strut only on the road.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Final Verdict

The Jeep Cherokee is the only option one should consider in its segment if they have any sort of fun activities in their mind. Unlike most vehicles in this domain, the Cherokee manages to go off the road, and also do it rather well! Even when talking about its on-road manners, the Cherokee thoroughly impressed although the interior could do with a little livening up. The Cherokee, therefore, makes for an excellent purchase and receives a double thumbs up from our end!
