With a complete redesign with its 2017 MY, the 2018 Jeep Compass continues to be a novel offering and a mixed bag of opinions. While it is an off-road ready vehicle with a capacious cabin, the SUV’s lethargic performance may not sit well with the buyers. However, in the family-oriented compact SUV segment, the Compass’s decent reliability outcomes help it carve a niche for itself. Though it has 543 complaints and 6 recalls, most of which are concerned with its electric system and mechanical components, the American option’s sales figures of 170,000 units help justify the statistics. A 2018 Jeep Compass for sale starts a little under $22,600 and competes with the likes of the Ford Escape, the Toyota RAV4, and the Honda CR-V.

Mechanical Complaints

  • Vehicle stalls abruptly: The 2018 Jeep Compass engine problems are directly related to the vehicle’s loss of power. In several cases, buyers have reported the engine to stall inadvertently, even when moving at highway speeds. While no injuries or accidents have been reported so far, the unexpected stalling can be a hazardous situation.
  • Excessive oil consumption: Buyers of the 2018 Compass have also reported the vehicle to consume more oil than usual. Consequently, the vehicle fails to deliver peak performance and can be a reason for the SUV’s engine stalling. While it is a known issue, there is currently no solution provided by Jeep.
  • Issues with the transmission unit: The Jeep Compass transmission problems are majorly concerned with the vehicle’s hesitation to shift between gears. Buyers have reported the vehicle to make a knocking sound when switching to a higher gear, and sometimes, also delivers rough shifts. All of these shortcomings affect the ride quality of the vehicle.
  • Improper functioning of Emergency Braking system: The Emergency Braking system, which works in tandem with the Forward-Collision Avoidance functionality, has engaged several times without any risk of a threat. As a result, buyers have noted their Jeep Compass loses speed and comes to a halt abruptly, which can increase the risk of a rear-end collision.
  • Problem with the suspension: Among other issues with the 2018 Jeep Compass, some buyers have reported the front struts and control arm to fracture, at low mileage. Consequently, these damaged components warrant a replacement.

Structural Complaints

  • Structural deficiencies: Noted in some cases, buyers have reported two distinct issues with the 2018 Jeep Compass’s structure. While the first complaint relates to the sudden explosion of the sunroof, other complainants have reported the wiper blades were damaged or stopped working, unexpectedly.

Safety Complaints

  • Malfunctioning airbag units: In the list of the 2018 Jeep Compass problems, some buyers have also reported the airbag warning light illuminating randomly. While no cause is known, the sudden illumination of the light can indicate an underlying safety concern. For others, however, the airbags have failed to deploy in case of a crash.

Electric System Complaints

  • Issues with infotainment screen: The 2018 Jeep Compass screen issues are recurring and concerning. Buyers have reported the touchscreen unit to lose its power, and consequently, users have no access to basic functionalities. Additionally, several others have reported the screen to delaminate quicker than expected, which also interferes with the normal functioning of the system.
  • Improper functioning of backup camera:Among the 2018 Jeep Compass common problems, complainants have reported the rearview camera to malfunction. Buyers have reported the camera to become inoperable or display a black screen, when in use. As a result, the driver remains unaware of his surroundings, which can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Problem with the interior lights: In certain cases, buyers have reported the instrument panel and rearview camera’s failure to adjust to the environment. Consequently, both units seem excessively bright during the night, which can affect the driver’s visibility.
  • Unintended functioning of the Auto start/stop: The auto start/stop functionality, which is added for the driver’s convenience, fails to perform as intended. As a result, when the driver tries to disengage the functionality, the vehicle fails to accelerate and remains stranded.

Should you buy the 2018 Jeep Compass?

In the compact SUV segment, the Jeep Compass brings off-roading capabilities and reliable performance to the table. While it has several recurring concerns, Jeep’s proactive nature comes to the rescue of the buyers. So, for us, the American SUV is fairly dependable and trustworthy. However, CarHP suggests buyers perform their due diligence while buying a vehicle. Additionally, if you are looking for an alternate option, the 2018 Ford Escape provides the best bang for the buck.
