The current generation of the Grand Cherokee has been on sale for like an eternity now but Jeep had tried keeping things fresh by periodically introducing new variants like the SRT and the Trackhawk. And while the Trackhawk can never outrun a sports car at a race track, at a quarter-mile drag strip things are completely opposite to that. Jeep has stayed to its true roots with the Cherokee and the 2022 model year intends to take things up a notch.

The 2022 model year is expected to get the Hellcat sourced V8 Hemi engine as standard now with the addition of new features and technology to complement the redesigned exterior and interior. Many might say that it is too late for Jeep to finally offer a more refined version of their flagship SUV against the likes of the more sophisticated and capable rivals like the Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR, Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 S, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo, but the attractive expected starting price of under $90,000 sets it apart from the entire competition.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Features

9.0/10

We haven’t received any details or haven’t come across many leaks so as to understand what the new and updated Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk would have on offer when it comes on sale, but what we do have is the long list of features and creature comforts that Jeep offers already with the current generation. This gives us a fair idea of what are the minimum things that we can expect from the upcoming model.

We Recommend

The Trackhawk in itself is a variant of the Grand Cherokee and does not have any further trim separations. That being said, Jeep offers plenty of customization and optional features that one can opt for based on their tastes and preferences.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk Release Date

There have been no updates from Jeep regarding the launch and availability of the 2022 Trackhawk yet after the cancellation of the Detroit Auto Show due to Covid-19, but in our opinion, Jeep should unveil the production-ready avatar of the updated Grand Cherokee in the next couple of months with the high-performance Trackhawk to be followed only by the end of 2021 or early 2022.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 Trackhawk is expected to get the currently optional 6.2-liter supercharged V8 Hemi engine as standard with the peak output expected to be the same at 707 hp and 645 lb-ft as we have seen previously in the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat. The engine is expected to be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with Quadra-Trac on-demand 4WD system powering all four wheels as standard to achieve off-road supremacy as well.

There has been no shortage of performance from Dodge’s Hellcat Hemi engine and the current generation Grand Cherokee Trackhawk managed a 3.5 second 0-60 mph run previously which we expect to get even quicker with the new shorter and lighter body expected for the 2022 model year. Maximum towing capacity has been rated for 7,200 lbs which could also be further enhanced with the towing package is offered as standard with the Trackhawk.

Though the Trackhawk is the most affordable option in this high-performance midsize SUV segment the performance is on par with all the premium European rivals. The Land Rover is more capable in the dirt and is over half-second slower in terms of acceleration but the similarly priced Mercedes GLE 63 S is marginally quicker than the Trackhawk. The Cayenne Turbo is the most expensive one here and has the best acceleration, top speed, and towing capabilities to offer.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Fuel Economy

7.0/10

High-performance cars have never been frugal and put a Hemi muscle car engine under the hood of a midsize SUV and the gas guzzler tax is something that goes unsaid. In the current avatar, the Trackhawk has been rated by the EPA for 13 mpg of combined fuel economy for city and highway driving with the standard 4WD system. In spite of featuring a sizable 24.6-gallon gas tank, the Trackhawk manages only to offer about 300 miles of driving range on a single tank of gas.

The twin-turbocharged V8 engine under the hood of the Porsche Cayenne sips the least amount of fuel and returns an overall efficiency identical to that of the highway fuel economy of the Trackhawk. The supercharged Range Rover SVR and the hybrid powertrain of the GLE 63 S offer identical frugality which is marginally lower than the Turbo. We don’t expect fuel consumption to be improved with the 2022 Trackhawk but a larger gas tank could sweeten the deal a bit more.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Interior

There are no confirmations or leaks that have surfaced with respect to the all-new Trackhawk but with Grand Cherokee Trackhawk expected to come only as a 5-seat option, we expect it to offer a similar amount of cabin and cargo space for all the passengers and their cargo as before. There is plenty of room for all the occupants and with no compromise in terms of legroom and headroom.

The cabin of the current-generation Grand Cherokee is miles behind its more premium European competitors but is expected to be brought on par with them with the 2022 model year update. The sporty racing-inspired elements like the black Laguna leather seats with bolsters with “Trackhawk” logo stitching are expected to be further improved and offered as standard with the addition of newer and upto date creature comforts and features to match up with the segment.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo has the sportiest appeal of them all with its sleek design and hence has the most compact cabin. It offers the lowest trunk volume while the Range Rover Sport SVR is only marginally bigger. The Mercedes GLE 63 S on the other hand is far more spacious with the upright stance offering an ample amount of headroom as well. Expect the Trackhawk to offer similar levels of comfort and space with the update. Some of the interior features in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk are:

  • 12-Way Power Front Seats w/Power 4-Way Lumbar Support
  • 60-40 Folding Split-Bench Heated Manual Reclining Simulated Suede/Leather Rear Seat
  • Suede/Nappa Performance Seats
  • Leather Door Trim Insert, Leather Upholstered Dashboard and Chrome/Aluminum Interior Accents
  • Power Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column and Heated Leather/Aluminum Steering Wheel
  • Voice Activated Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning w/Front Infrared
  • Memory Settings for Driver Seat, Door Mirrors, and Audio
  • Smart Device Remote Engine Start and Tracker System

How intuitive is the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk’s infotainment unit?

Currently, the Trackhawk gets Fiat-Chrysler’s familiar tried and tested UConnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display. With the cabin being completely redesigned, we expect Jeep to offer a larger screen with the updated interface as the current generation struggles to cope up with the premium experience offered by rivals. The optional rear-seat entertainment package with a DVD player is expected to be done with and should be replaced with a more sophisticated system similar to the ones on the Mercedes. Some of the infotainment features in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk are:

  • 8.4-inch UConnect 4C infotainment system
  • 10-speaker 506W Alpine audio system
  • HD Radio and SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • GPS Navigation
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hot Spot
  • SiriusXM Travel Link and SiriusXM Traffic Plus
  • Integrated Voice Command w/Bluetooth

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Exterior

8.0/10

The leaks and spoof of the 2022 Grand Cherokee Trackhawk have shown very little about the exterior design elements of the updated Trackhawk designs. The camouflaged pictures showcase a smaller footprint but are expected to maintain its iconic proportions and the front grille. As before, wherein there were fewer exterior differences between the Trackhawk and regular Grand Cherokee, we speculate a few more radical differences to differentiate it from its one-third-priced family SUV avatar.

The Porsche Cayenne focuses more on form over practicality and hence in spite of being larger than all others, offers a compact cabin. The GLE 63 S on the other hand does well to open up maximum cabin space despite the smaller dimensions. The Land Rover staying true to its nature offers the best ground clearance which is expected to be matched by the 2022 Trackhawk as well. Noteworthy exterior features in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk include:

  • Automatic Projector Beam High-Intensity Daytime Running Auto-Leveling Directionally Adaptive Auto High-Beam Headlamps w/Washer
  • LED Brakelights
  • Power Liftgate and Lip Spoiler
  • Speed Sensitive Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers
  • Power Heated Auto Dimming Side Mirrors w/Tilt Down and Turn Signal Indicator
  • Rocker Panel Extensions and Body-Colored Fender Flares
  • Black Grille w/Metal-Look Accents and Black Side Windows Trim & Black Front Windshield Trim
  • 20-inch Black Satin Aluminum Wheels

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Safety

7.0/10

The current-generation Grand Cherokee SUV scored well in the safety tests conducted by the NHTSA and the IIHS and we expect the safety parameters to be further improved with newer technology in play. In its current guise, Jeep offers almost all the features from the itinerary with the Trackhawk to offer a relaxed and safe haven for all its owners and their families. A highlight of the most prominent safety and driver assistance features currently available with the Trackhawk has been mentioned below.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • Forward Collision Warning-Plus
  • Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind Spot Monitoring System
  • Automated Parking Sensors
  • ParkView Back-Up Camera
  • Restricted Driving Mode
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Competition

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk vs Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR

The battle for supremacy for both on and off the road cannot get any better than this. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR although loses out in terms of both acceleration and towing performance, it is more potent in the dirt. The ride is a lot more comfortable with the interior feeling decades ahead of the Grand Cherokee. But since the 2022 Trackhawk is expected to change all of that, we would recommend waiting for the launch of the Jeep rather than opting for the Land Rover.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk vs Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S

Probably the most premium and sophisticated high-performance midsize SUV on sale today in the market, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 S outshines the Trackhawk by a huge margin. Although it costs considerably more, the acceleration and towing performance are similar with the hybrid powertrain returning far better fuel efficiency than the Hemi engine. The cabin is very premium and feature-loaded with sophistication and refinement being class-leading. Even with the complete redesign, we doubt Jeep would be able to match up in terms of the premium cabin offered by Mercedes.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk vs Porsche Cayenne Turbo

The most expensive SUV in this comparison, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo is more oriented towards high performance as compared to the off-roading skills. Other than that, the acceleration and tugging prowess is on par with the Trackhawk while the superior fuel efficiency and cornering skills are unbeatable in the segment. There is no doubt with the quality of the cabin with the latest cutting-edge technology offered by Porsche, we’ll have to wait until the Trackhawk is launched to decide for a clear winner in this comparison.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV Final Verdict

8.1/10

Jeep has been milking the Grand Cherokee for a long time now as it is the only Jeep product that hasn’t seen a complete overhaul in the past 5 years. Although it might seem a bit too late now with the Europeans capturing the majority of the segment, Jeep could very well grab a chunk of share with the more sophisticated and refined cabin expected to complement the very potent Hellcat engine under its hood. With the ride quality and handling also set to improve without a major hike in the prices, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk could be the best bet for an enthusiastic family man.
