In a world where nothing is concrete and stable, what if one encounters an enriched history of toughness since inception? He/she is tempted to follow that lead. The 2016 Jeep Patriot is particular in that description as it hits the market with its old-age ruggedness and an old-school appeal altogether.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The rhythmic notes of this SUV are up against the likes of the Subaru Crosstrek, Mazda CX-3, and the Honda HR-V with a starting price of some 18 grand. Availability in two drive layouts and corresponding powertrain is also something that we are going to witness in this machinery. The Jeep Patriot gets no major updates for 2016, only a few infotainment and interior features are expected to be added this year.

Features
9.0/10

The 2016 Jeep Patriot comes majorly in 4 trims namely Sport, Latitude, High Altitude Edition, and Sport SE with a bonus of 75th Anniversary Edition standing at the extreme of the lineup. There is no major difference among them as such considering their infotainment and entertainment unit as the Uconnect, 4-Speaker Audio Unit, and SIRIUS Satellite Radio are standard across all the trims. The level of off-roading is also kind of parallel throughout the strata with their touring suspension and respective wheel setups. That being said, the Sport gets the most primitive wheels of 16" x 6.5" Styled Steel which gets bigger and muscular in the Sport SE with 17" x 6.5" Mineral Gray Aluminum wheels.

The Jeep Patriot gets an array of inspiring features that are assistive in dynamics and handling such as the Roll Stability Control, Electronic Stability Control, and the Driveline Traction Control. Not just that, it has been given tech-ends to manage the vicissitude with its Sentry Key Engine Immobilizer and Hydraulic Power-Assist Steering. The Voice Activation and Bluetooth Wireless Phone Connectivity are among the other normals that are present in it as well just like any other which are there on the road. On the whole, it weighs decent in its offers.

2016 Jeep Patriot We Recommend

The one which suits the most to a huge customer base is the Sport SE simply for the fact that it can be availed of in both FWD and 4WD with a more powerful engine option that is apt for one’s off-roading nudges. Indeed, the base format is also sufficient to satiate that urge but one should pay attention to a little increment in price tag for a much bigger surge and that with relative comfort as that of the higher trims. So, without hesitation, it has to be Sport SE.

Engine and Performance
5.4/10

The 2016 Jeep Patriot is quite intriguing for two sorts of powertrain packages on offer. The base variant is the 2 L I-4 which can kick in the power of 158 hp @ 6400 rpm and a torque of 141 lb-ft @ 5000. While the bigger variant comes with a 2.4 L capacity with a power-torque surge of up to 172 hp @ 6000 rpm and 165 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm.

The interesting part is their exclusivity to the drivetrain layout with which they are coupled as the 2 L I-4 is in conjunction with the FWD and the 2.4 L I-4 is paired when all wheels are powered via an axle. This power shift mechanism is one of the among rivals because of which it can accelerate from 0-60 mph within 8.5 seconds and can cover a quarter-mile in fewer than 15 seconds.

Evidently the most accelerating and fastest SUV in the competition, the Jeep Patriot is impressive for what it is asked for. The mark is closely followed by the Mazda CX-3 but the gap is widened in the dragging abilities. The others get even murkier in the same parameter, with the 2016 Crosstrek’s horizontally placed engine bestowing slowest timings of 10.3 seconds to the 60 mph mark. Part of the reason for Mazda’s performance can be attributed to its better figures which make up for the extra pounds and maintain the power-weight ratio. Therefore, it can be concluded to prefer the Patriot in this domain.

Fuel Economy
7.3/10

The 2016 Jeep Patriot might be the best in performance dynamics but that refrains it from achieving the same feat in fuel economy. A return of 23 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highways, and 26 overall bring the Jeep Patriot in a state to deliver 408 miles of range coverage at its zenith. This SUV becomes a subject of exhilaration over the economy and loses its essence in the battle of daily commuting and practicality.

As far as comparison is concerned, the Patriot is right at the bottom with its lowest mileage and range while the Subaru Crosstrek aces the odometer reading in single refueling with its 492 miles peak range despite having the same mileage. The most desirable, though, is the Mazda CX-3 as it has a blend of both economical numbers averaging 31 MPG and corresponding stretch, while the Honda HR-V also manages to perform better than the Patriot. Therefore, the bottom line is that Jeep has to revisit this specific domain to stay relevant in the coming days.

Interior
6.4/10

The Jeep Patriot is baggage of mixed feelings. The interior cabin has that comfort and touch with its high-cushioned seats and premium cloth-trimming all over them. But the lack of power adjustment and restricted permutation in flexibility dent the image. One of the biggest hits is that the lower trims have been kept devoid of air conditioning whereas even the best among them gets nothing more than its manual mode. Though that is compensated by the pairs of a few under seat and headliner ducts. The other chrome-accented panels and inserts along with a full-cloth headliner are the maximum that one is supposed to experience inside it.

The general pattern in such body styles is satisfactory for the level of sophistication an owner asks for. Be it legroom, headroom, or shoulder space, all of them are given enough room for one to gel with the cabin easily. The accents and assists are a matter of different dimensions altogether but if one has to view all the rivals, the Mazda, Honda, and Subaru, objectively then it would be reasonable to consider them at par with each other except for the CX-3 which has a little less for its lower cargo capacity of 12.4 cubic feet. Some of the features are:

  • Premium Cloth Bucket Seats
  • Sentry Key Engine Immobilizer
  • Analog Display
  • Full Cloth Headliner
  • Cruise Control
  • 4-way Front seats

How intuitive is the 2016 Jeep Patriot’s infotainment unit?

The affair of the Jeep Patriot is not seemingly an impressive one irrespective of trim strata as all of them have the same assets that could have been improved slightly better. The list includes the likes of the 4-speaker audio unit, Sirius Satellite Radio, and UConnect at the max. There are other basic features as well which might prolong the description such as the Bluetooth Wireless Phone Connectivity and Audio Jack Input but don’t make any difference on a bigger picture. Hence, this specific domain is certainly not its forte. Some of the features are:

  • UConnect
  • Sirius Satellite Radio
  • 4-speaker audio unit
  • Bluetooth Wireless Phone Connectivity
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
Exterior
7.0/10

Without a doubt, the 2016 Jeep Patriot is an old-school silhouette with the same benchmarked rugged platform. That iconic netted-grille on the front is surrounded by two large automatic aero-composite halogen headlamps on the sides when viewed from the front. The wide and bulky stature of Patriot is further amplified by either the 16" x 6.5" Styled Steel Wheels or 17" x 6.5" Granite Painted Pocket Wheels depending on the trim level. The course of appearance does have that off-roading feel radiating out of those touring suspension setups attached to the wheels. Last but not least are the roof rails that are bolted onto the roof as an extra luggage carrier. Therefore, the Patriot defends its style with its appeal and functionalities.

Though heavier than the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 yet the Patriot remains optimistic in its approach in terms of its weight transfer, thanks to its tuned touring suspension that maintains the ground clearance, ride height, and ride frequency, all at once. As a result of such a mechanism at its disposal, the Patriot is equally competent to others and can go off-road without any hassle. Hence, it remains inconclusive here to choose one’s edge over another’s supremacy, and placing them on the podium would be the best to do. Some of the features are:

  • Aero-Composite Halogen Headlamps
  • Roof Rack Rails
  • Body-Colored Grille
  • Galvanized Steel Panels
  • Black bodyside cladding
Safety
7.4/10

There is no guessing that the machinery must have worthy artillery of the safety assists when it is a matter of off-roading or off-limit maneuverability. Thankfully, the sentiments are well catered to in the 2016 Jeep Patriot as it gets Electronic Stability Control and Roll Stability Control as a standard that together keep the chassis within the inclination limits and avoids the excess body transfer on the cornering wheels simultaneously.

The frame has been bestowed with the Driveline Traction Control to manage traction on the tougher terrains. As far as the structural strength is concerned, the Jeep Patriot marks a 4-star rating in the NHTSA crash tests and a “Good” rating in all parameters except for the driver-side frontal overlap in the IIHS crash tests. Some of the features are:

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Roll Stability Control
  • Driveline Traction Control
  • ABS
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Comprehensive airbag system
Final Verdict

The Jeep Patriot is impressive on many fronts and is worth an investment. The competitive nature does struggle in its range and economy perspective but those can be overlooked for the other characteristics that it has on offer with which the driving would be no less than a real pleasure at the end of the day. Therefore, we would keep it on our wishlist along with others who are as capable as the Patriot.
