Detailed Review

The 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV is a result of genuine Italian craftsmanship. It comes with customised platform with the choice of having a 4 wheel drive or Front wheel drive and manual or automatic transmission. All the trims have 2 four cylinder engines. The robust 1.4 litre, 4 cylinder, turbocharged engine creates a hefty 160 horsepower. The SUV offers a 6 speed manual transmission with the alternative option of a 9 speed automatic transmission.

The front wheel drive is the standard feature across all trims which can be upgraded to an 4 wheel drive system, making it a quite capable off roading vehicle. Keeping safety in mind, Jeep has made front airbags, electronic stability systems and antilock braking systems, standard features across all the trims of the 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV.

Now, despite having an engine slightly smaller than the Mazda CX-3, it stills fares better in terms of the horsepower and torque figures - 160 hp compares to Mazda CX-3's 146 hp and Renegade's 184 lb-ft of torque compares to Mazda CX-3's 146 lb-ft of torque. In fact, in terms of performance, the 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV fares pretty well against its competition except for in the mileage aspect.

The American automobile giant offers value for money models depending upon the user\u2019s needs and desires. The Jeep Renegade Sport being the base trim level car, offers the barebones robustness of a highly capable off roading beast. The key features offered in this model are - the push button start with the proximity key, Manual Anti-whiplash adjustable front head restraints and manual adjustable rear head restraints (to protect passengers from neck injuries in case of accidents).

As you move along the trim hierarchy, the car keeps getting loaded with fascinating features all designed to give the driver a rich driving experience. By paying a few extra bucks, the car comes equipped with cool additions like cornering lights, fully automatic aero-composite halogen daytime running headlights, electrically powered and heated side mirrors, perimeter approaching lights and rear windshield defroster and interval wiper.

The highest trim ie: the 2017 Jeep Renegade Deserthawk also offers rain detecting wipers, air filtration with dual zone air conditioning with climate control. Jeep offers a 4 wheel drive system for all the trim levels for an extra $2000. The Trailhawk and the Deserthawk trims however come equipped with only the 4 wheel drive system.

2017 Jeep Renegade Engine

6.7/10

"If you want a Renegade with something approaching real energy, you’ll have to settle for the low-end Sport model equipped with the 1.4-liter and six-speed manual gearbox. It’s the lightest and quickest" - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV offers two 4 cylinder engine option -

  • Turbocharged 1.4-L inline four cylinder generating 160 units of horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque - This particular engine comes mated to a 6 speed manual transmission.
  • Turbocharged 2.4-L inline 4 cylinder engine generating 180 units of horsepower which is available with only the 9 speed automatic transmission.

For a better off roading experience, Jeep also offers two all wheel drive systems - the Active Drive and the Active drive low, the latter of which converts the first gear into a 20:1 ratio gear to enable slow maneuvering on rough roads.

Now the 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV was built as a vehicle for rugged use. That being said, this car does not satiate any desire for quickness or speed. The fastest model of all the trims offered by the Jeep Renegade is the base model - Jeep Renegade Sport.

The manual transmission on the Renegade is slick but the automatic transmission is a disaster. It leads with inconsistent shifts which occur too early at times and too late at others. For daily moderate use, the 1.4 litre engine with the front wheel drivetrain would be prudent and for slightly rough use, the Jeep Active Drive 4 wheel drive would exceed your expectations. However, for hardcore off roading, the 2.4l engine along with the Jeep Active Drive Low is an excellent choice.

Despite being a let down in terms of transmission and speed, the 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV fares pretty well against its competition - Chevrolet Trax, Buick Encore, Mazda CX-3. The Jeep Renegade offers a superior torque and horsepower than all the aforementioned vehicles.

Acceleration

The Jeep performs average at best in this aspect. Its 8.6 seconds timing for an acceleration from 0-60 mph beats the 9.3 second mark of the Chevrolet Trax SUV but is defeated by the 8.5 seconds mark and the 7.8 seconds mark set by the Mazda CX-3 and the Buick Encore respectively.

Ride and Handling

If you opt for the lower trim 1.4litre turbocharged engines with the 6 speed manual transmission, you will be guaranteed a smooth ride suitable for the city as well as the highway. However, if you opt for the 2.4l engine with the 9 speed automatic transmission, city driving may not be favourable.

The 1.4L engine with the front wheel drive takes on corners in a nimble manner with pretty good stability. The bigger engine trims are not as grounded as their smaller counterparts. While employing the 4 wheel drivetrain, the Jeep Renegade powers up like the beast it was made to be and performs exceedingly well in terms of gripping traction, suspension and passenger comfort.

2017 Jeep Renegade Fuel Economy

5.7/10

The 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV performs well below average when it comes to fuel economy and range of distance on a full tank. The baby Jeep gives an average of 24 mpg with the smaller, 1.4 litre engine on city roads. On the highway, it can give 31 miles on the gallon. That gives it a combined average of 26 mpg. When compared with its competition, the 2017 prodigal Jeep performed the worst.

2017 Jeep Renegade Interior

7.0/10

"It might look rugged on the outside, but on the inside the Renegade is comfortable and well-trimmed. Although a bare-bones Sport does without air-conditioning and cruise control, most Renegades come pretty well equipped and have soft-touch materials for the dash and armrests." - Edmunds

Although the 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV has ambient, and plush interiors with all sorts of toys for the boy in every man, the boxy shape of the prodigal Jeep creates a dull drone when cruising in open areas like highways, which can be deal breaker. Apart from that, the Jeep Renegade interiors have been designed to make driving a pleasurable experience with certain traits of the classic Jeep Wrangler. The passenger seat grab bar is an example of that.

The telescopic and tilting steering column make it convenient for the driver to drive comfortably. Jeep goes the extra mile and provides an option for a heated steering wheel, in case you don't mind spending a couple hundred bucks extra to indulge in luxury. The two zone climate control creates a pleasant atmosphere inside the car. The car also has 8 cup holders placed evenly across the interior to ensure you and your company can have a morning coffee while driving to work or away on a trip.

With 41.1 inches of dedicates leg space in the front, the Renegade surpasses its competition comfortably in terms of spatial comfort. The passenger leg space however, is compromised because of that and ranks last with only 35.1 inches. It also provides the best in class headroom of 41.2 inches making the cabin airy. Jeep provides the option of heated front row seats, and a power driving seat. The seats can also be equipped with lumbar and thigh support and side bolsters and headrest tilt. A central armrests is available for both the rows. Although the car is meant to seat 5 people, due to the less back seat space, probably only 4 adults can comfortably sit for long distance journeys.

Infotainment System

The car employs the use of the convenient U-Connect infotainment system, which provides a very user friendly interface which is convenient to use from either side of the console panel. The standard fitting on the Renegade is a basic radio. However that can be replaced with a 6.5 inch touchscreen infotainment panel with a total of 7 inches incorporated into the instrument cluster. The 6.5 inch screen is high definition and makes GPRS navigation exceedingly easy.

Except the AUX and USB input, 3G internet, Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, mobile Wi-Fi, Navigation, real time satellite information and voice recognition are all optional features. The infotainment system however, is not equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Cargo Volume to rear seat folded (ft.3) 50.8 48.4 48.40 44.5

The 2017 Jeep Renegade provides about 19 cu ft of cargo volume. However, the car also provides the option of a completely foldable second row of seats, thereby creating an additional 32 cu ft of cargo volume. This makes the cargo space of this car average at best. The Honda HR-V tops this aspect of the segment with 24 cu ft of standard cargo space and 59 cu ft of cargo volume with the seats folded.

2017 Jeep Renegade Exterior

7.9/10

"Present are the traditional 7-slotted vertical grille and round headlights, but it’s the Renegade's angles that tie its design with that of the iconic Wrangler and, long before that, the Willys MB. At the same time, the Renegade is its own modern take on what a Jeep can be." - Kelley Blue Book

In width however it measures longer than all the three. The 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV, with an excellent road presence, stands the tallest amongst its competition at 66.5 inches and with a ground clearance of 6.7 inches. Weighing 3025 lbs, the baby Jeep is heavier than all of its competition except the Buick Encore, making it a very well rooted vehicle. With the classic 7 slot front grill, and circular headlights, Jeep establishes their mark over its prodigal son.

Exterior Features

On the outside of the compact SUV, Jeep has maintained a minimalistic appearance providing only the fuel vent and an optional sunroof. The car sports a thin roof section with bulky roof pillars and plastic protective accessories with give the car a rugged appearance.

To make the car capable on rough terrains, the Renegade sports 18 inch aluminium wheels with all season tires in the front and 18 inch steel wheels with all season tires in the rear with a tyre pressure monitoring system along with it. Over the trim levels, the aluminium wheels come as an optional feature.

2017 Jeep Renegade Safety

2017 Jeep Renegade Competition

Jeep Renegade vs Honda HR-V

Priced at $19465, the Honda HR-V is $1.5k more than the Jeep Renegade. The HR-V, despite being created for the moderate off-roading segment, it appeals more to the family wagon type user, owing to the greater legroom and moderate headroom compared to the baby Jeep.

It gives a fuel average of 28 miles per gallon on city roads and 34 on a highway, both of which are far more superior than the Renegade's lousy 24 in the city and 31 on a highway. Meting out 141 units of horsepower, the HR-V cannot take on excessively rugged terrain like the Renegade. The HR-V does, however, surpass the Renegade when it comes to cargo volume, fuel tank capacity, and its emission figures.

Jeep Renegade vs Chevrolet Trax

The Chevy achieves a perfect safety rating from the IIHS and NHTSA, which definitely gives it an upper hand over the Jeep Renegade. With premium interiors and comfortable seats with plenty of legroom (more than the Jeep) for both the rows, the Chevrolet Trax gives a rich and premium driving experience.

In terms of performance figures, the Trax creates 138 units of horsepower and comes equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Like the Jeep, the standard drivetrain on the vehicle is front wheel drive with the optional all-wheel drive for more power. Performing better than the Jeep in fuel economy, the Chevrolet Trax gives an average of 26 miles per gallon on city roads and 34 miles per gallon on a highway. One major advantage of this over the Jeep is that Chevrolet offers two years of complimentary scheduled service.

2017 Jeep Renegade Final Verdict

All in all, the 2017 Jeep Renegade will appeal to the youth and the moderate off-roader with its spartan charm. The 2017 Jeep Renegade SUV offers more standard features than any other vehicle in its segment at a competitive price. The impressive off-roading capabilities of the prodigal Jeep surpass every other vehicle's in its segment, and the efficient four-wheel drive with nimble handling and the options for Active Drive systems, are the major upsides for off-roading enthusiasts.

The premium interior features along with the decent infotainment system (U-Connect), all appeal to the youthful crowd. The Jeep Renegade is a cumbersome and heavy vehicle meant to hold its ground in the roughest of terrains. For people who require more cargo volume and fuel efficiency along with comfortable seating in both rows, the Renegade won't be the best option. But for people who find the spartan appearance alluring, the 2017 Jeep Renegade would be an excellent choice.
