The 2017 Jeep Renegade gets a lineup of six trims, offered with 2 powertrains. The first three basic trims get a 1.4L engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. The price of these three basic trims goes from $17,995-$24,190. The other three trims get a 2.4L engine that comes with a 9-speed transmission. The price of the high-end trims goes from $25,195-$28,390.

The interiors of the Renegade get a few bespoke features from the costlier Wrangler. With the most spacious interiors to offer, the 2017 Jeep also has a decent cargo room to flaunt. However, it faces strong competition from the 2017 Chevrolet Trax, 2017 Buick Encore, and the 2017 Mazda CX-3. The Jeep has the best in class power but has a compensated acceleration and fuel economy.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2017 Jeep Renegade comes in a total of six trims. Three of which come with a 1.4L engine and the other three are equipped with a 2.4L engine. The pricing of the Jeep renegade goes from $17,995 for the base trim, Sport, to $28,390 for the high-end trim, Deserthawk. With a power output of 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, the 2017 Renegade offers only an average acceleration and average fuel economy. However, its 6-speed manual transmission seems flawless and aids it in delivering an unmatchable drive experience.

2017 Jeep Renegade

With regard to its interiors, the Renegade borrows certain traits from the high-end offering, Wrangler. It comes packed with features and luxurious materials. The exteriors remain bulky and sturdy, this adds to the advantage of the interior space, giving the Renegade a best-in-class interior passenger room. The exteriors get just the basics in terms of features. In terms of safety, the offering is way above the average.

"The 2017 Jeep Renegade has outstanding off-road handling, engines that can keep up with traffic, and a pleasant cabin with quality materials." - Cars.USnews

The 2017 Jeep Renegade carries forward its exterior designs for this model year and offers a total of 6 trims for a price range of MSRP $17,995-$28,390. Each of the six trims is offered with two drivetrain options, an RWD and a 4WD. The high-end Deserthawk trim features advanced offerings like front fog lights, a Uconnect system, and interior leather fittings.

In total there are two powertrains offered, a 1.4L inline 4-cylinder engine and a 2.4L inline 4-cylinder engine, the output of which is 160 and 180 hp respectively.

We recommend

Of the six trims available, we would recommend the Trailhawk that is available only as a four-wheel drive and is priced at $26,895. It comes equipped with a fixed rear window, Perimeter lights, and rain detecting wipers. It comes equipped with a 180 hp generating 2.4L engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Engine and Performance

"If you want a Renegade with something approaching real energy, you’ll have to settle for the low-end Sport model equipped with the 1.4-liter and six-speed manual gearbox. It’s the lightest and quickest" - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

The 2017 Model year of the Jeep Renegade gets two powertrains options across its six trims. A 1.4L 4-cylinder engine that generates 160hp and 184 lb-ft of torque can be found in the first three trims, namely, Sport, Latitude, and Altitude. The remaining three trims get a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that generates 180 HP with a 9-speed transmission system.

The first engine option gets a 6-speed manual transmission. And the second option churns out 175 pound-feet of torque. The Jeep Renegade has traits of an army vehicle, from its ancestors. This further translates to a rugged body and similar performance. If you are looking for acceleration and speed you are certainly at the wrong place.

Acceleration of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

Having an acceleration time of 8.6 seconds to go from 0-60 mph isn't as bad as we expected. It records a quarter-mile time of 16.5 seconds. The mentioned timings are with regard to the smaller 1.4L engine. More than its acceleration, you would be amused by how well it tackles obstacles and conquers various terrain.

Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 6.8 9.3 6.3 5.7

Facing some strong rivalry from stark opponents such as the 2017 Buick Encore and the 2017 Mazda CX-3, they put up better acceleration figures on the chart in comparison to the 2017 Jeep renegade. On the other hand, we have the 2017 Chevrolet Trax behind the Renegade for its acceleration

Ride and Handling of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

As mentioned before, even if you choose the powertrain that comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 1400 cc engine, you would still be amazed by its ability to traverse uneven terrain. With a fine set of suspensions in place, you will be guaranteed a comfortable and smooth ride.

If you aren't already happy with what the basic engine has to offer, you can choose to upgrade to the 2.4L engine offering by selecting another trim. However, before you do that you could also upgrade to the Four-wheel-drive configuration and enhance the ride quality that it offers.

Braking of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

The 2017 Jeep Renegade comes equipped with a set of 12.0-inch rotors for the front wheels and a set of 11.0-inch rotors for the rear wheels. These specifications prove to be potent enough to bring the 3025 pounds Jeep Renegade to a stop in a distance of 116 feet. However, we will need to compare it with its competition offering so as to find the best in the segment.

Brake Front (in.) 12.0 11.8 11.8 11.0

Curb Weight (lbs.) 3025 2805 3237 2809
60-0 MPH (ft.) 116 119 119 117

When compared, we find that the 2017 renegade has the best break performance to offer in class. It is followed by the 2017 CX-3, which has comparatively tiny rotors and yet manages to stop at a distance of 117 feet. The rankings further see both the GM cousins rank in the third position together with a distance of 119 feet.

Fuel Economy

"The 2017 Renegade gets lower EPA fuel economy numbers than most rivals." - Cars.USnews

With a bad reputation for its fuel economy, the 2017 Jeep Renegade has made a sincere attempt to improve. When equipped with the 1.4L engine, it delivers an EPA reading for its gas mileage of 24 miles to a gallon for the city, 31 miles to a gallon for the Highway, and a combined reading of 26 miles to a gallon. It goes without saying that the 2.4L engine offers a lesser mileage, 21/29/24 for city/highway/combined, respectively.

MPG (city) 24 25 25 29
MPG (highway) 31 33 33 34
MPG (combined) 26 28 28 31

Up against its competition, we see the 2017 Mazda CX-3 offers a very attractive gas mileage. With a combined reading of 31 miles to a gallon, Highway mileage of 34 miles to a gallon, and city mileage of 29 miles to a gallon, it is clearly the best in class. It is closely followed by the Chevy Trax and the Buick Encore.

"It might look rugged on the outside, but on the inside the Renegade is comfortable and well-trimmed. Although a bare-bones Sport does without air-conditioning and cruise control, most Renegades come pretty well equipped and have soft-touch materials for the dash and armrests." - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

Borrowing specific traits from high-end offerings of jeep such as the Wrangler, the re-done interiors of the Renegade is pretty impressive. Equipped with plush materials and fascinating features, the 2017 Renegade wins the hearts of several off-road enthusiasts. However, other onlookers might find the interior designs and dressing to be boring. Furthermore, the embedded Technology features and tiny cargo pockets enhance the interior offering.

With an ability to accommodate 5 individuals just as its competition does, the race squares down to checking the dimensions available. Thanks to the box-shaped body of the Jeep, it gets a spacious interior, the best in class it is, in comparison. It is followed by the GM brothers in second place and the Mazda ranks in 3rd position. Renegade amazes us as it offers an extremely spacious second row of seats as well.

As mentioned before, the 2017 Jeep renegade comes fitted with technologically advanced features. The infotainment offering follows the same, offering an optional 6.5-inch high-definition touch screen that comes with an inbuilt Uconnect infotainment system. The 2017 Renegade is also known for its GPRS navigation system that is extremely user-friendly.

Infotainment System of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

You also get several other basic features as a part of the infotainment offering. However, you do miss out on the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The basic features offered in the 2017 Renegade are mentioned below:

  • AUX and USB input,
  • 3G internet,
  • Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity,
  • Mobile Wi-Fi, Navigation,
  • Real-time satellite information and
  • Voice recognition

Cargo Capacity of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

For its cargo room provision, you get a standard offering of 18.5 cubic feet. This is behind the second row of seats. When folded down, the cargo room expands to a massive 50.8 cubic feet. Once again this enormous room is due to the box-shaped exterior that the 2017 Jeep Renegade comes with.

The 2017 Buick Encore offers the largest Cargo room that measures 18.8 cubic feet. It is closely followed by its cousin, the 2017 Chevrolet Trax, with an offering of 18.7 cubic feet. In the last position, we have the 2017 Mazda CX-3, with an offering of 12.4 cubic feet. With regard to the maximum cargo space, it is the 2017 Jeep Renegade that offers the most.

"Present are the traditional 7-slotted vertical grille and round headlights, but it’s the Renegade's angles that tie its design with that of the iconic Wrangler and, long before that, the Willys MB. At the same time, the Renegade is its own modern take on what a Jeep can be." - Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

We have already spoken a lot about the exteriors of the 2017 Jeep Renegade, a bulky, boxy, and sturdy one it is. However, we will dwell on the dimensions in this section. It comes with a curb weight of 3025 lbs, it is also the widest vehicle in class that also has the best height and ground clearance to its name. Despite having the shortest length it offers the largest wheelbase.

Compared with rivals, we have the 2017 Chevrolet Trax as the lightest, weighing 2805 lbs. The Buick Encore is the heaviest while also being the longest vehicle in class. It weighs 3237 lbs. and measures 168.4 inches in length. In terms of height and ground clearance, the 2017 Mazda CX-3 is the smallest. With such diverse dimensions for each of the vehicles in consideration, it is indeed confusing to declare one of them as the best.

Exterior Features of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

Within an aggressive stance and fine dimensions, the 2017 Renegade sports 18-inch aluminum wheels and all-season tires as standard. It gets just the basics with regard to exterior features and we have tried to pen down the same below:

  • My Sky Power/Removable Sunroof
  • MOPAR Renegade Snowboard Decals
  • Full-Size Temporary Use Spare Tire
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Body Color Roof
  • Dual Moonroof (Optional)
  • Sun/Moon Roof (Optional)

"The 2017 Jeep Renegade received four out of five stars overall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. " - Cars.USnews

Safety ratings of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

With respect to the safety offering of the 2017 Jeep Renegade, we dive into the records of NHTSA and IIHS. We find that NHTSA grades the 2017 Renegade with 4 out of 5 stars. It loses out in the aspects of a frontal crash, and Rollover ratings, with a score of four and three respectively. Similarly, IIHS grades the Renegade with a "Poor" rating for its headlights, a "Marginal" rating for its Latch-ease of use, and an "Average" rating for its Small overlap front: driver-side.

Safety Features of the 2017 Jeep Renegade

Equipped with several active safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, Forward collision warning, lane change alert, Rear parking sensors, and more, the safety offering is spot on for the 2017 Jeep Renegade. It further hosts standard safety features such as Electronic Stability Control, Roll Stability Control, Selec-Terrain ABS, Child lock safety, and more, the list continues as it also offers the following:

  • Driveline Traction Control,
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor,
  • Electronic Stability Control(ESC)
  • Roll Stability Control(RSC)
  • Selec-Terrain ABS
  • Driveline Traction Control
  • Rear Child Safety Locks
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensors
  • Dual Stage Driver. and Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags

2017 Jeep Renegade vs 2017 Mazda CX-3

Priced at an MSRP of $19,960, the 2017 Mazda CX-3 offers the highest engine capacity in class, however, it fails to deliver as much power. It generates only 146 hp as compared to the 160hp output of the Jeep Renegade. Its 2.0L engine gives it some benefits in acceleration, by clocking the best time in class. It also offers the best in class fuel economy and has a decent interior offering. However, being priced higher than the Renegade makes it a questionable option.

2017 Jeep Renegade vs 2017 Chevrolet Trax

Up against the Chevrolet Trax, the 2017 Renegade offers better brake performance, better acceleration and also offers more power generation, despite coming with the same engine specifications. All of this is offered with a lower price tag than what the Chevrolet quotes. On the other hand, the 2017 Chevrolet Trax has a better fuel economy and has the best in class safety rating, scoring 5/5 stars.

Final Verdict

2017 Jeep Renegade appeals to off-road enthusiasts, especially when it features its 2.4L engine. With very good performance numbers and a fine acceleration, the 2017 Renegade manages to put up a decent fuel economy reading. It also fairs well in the interior offering with regard to the technological features and the space offered. Overall, it is a value-for-money offer at an affordable price of $17,995 and onwards.
