The Jeep Renegade is the smallest offering from the brand, but they’ve made sure to keep the company's true essence by offering some off-road capability even in this small format. The 2018 Jeep Renegade gets some additional tech and features to stack up well against the competitors like the Honda HR-V, the Chevrolet Trax, and the Mazda CX-3. One advantage the Renegade holds up against the rivals is its low starting price, but there have been 252 registered complaints. However, the car has only 2 recalls which is a very low number and suggests that it could indeed be a reliable car.

User complaints and problems

Electrical Problems

  • Media and instrument screen – The infotainment screen and the odometer were reported to go blank or keep flashing with vertical lines on them. Also, the units changed to metrics on their own and had to be changed back to the US units.
  • Warning lights – It was reported that the check engine lights and the transmission warning lights flashed at random times.
  • Electrical malfunction – The radio shut off by itself and the cooler started fluctuating. Users also reported that the key fob would not work and the car hesitates to start.
  • Wiring – A faulty wiring caused a fire, destroying the cabin completely.
  • USB – The USB port was found to be faulty and would disconnect the Apple Car Play when it rains.

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine – The car was reported to stall abruptly while the owner was driving the car and took several attempts to restart the engine. Also, the oil levels were reported to get low in a very short period requiring a very frequent oil change. There was also a reported fire from the engine bay that started with a cloud of light smoke.
  • Fuel system – The car loses power and hesitates to accelerate and sputters vigorously.
  • Brakes – The User reported that the brakes would apply on their own and was almost rear-ended by another car. There were also deep groves noticed on the brake rotors
  • Transmission – When driving at around 80 mph, the transmission seemed to skip gears and jerk a lot.
  • Steering – The power steering disengaged and made it very hard to turn the wheel.

Safety Problems

  • Airbags – Multiple crashes were reported where the airbags were never deployed.
  • Seatbelt – The sensor does not alert the driver if the seatbelt is not clicked in place.

Exterior Problems

  • Sunroof/Windshield – The sunroof shattered for no reason and cut the arm of the driver. There were also cases where the windshield cracked without any reason.
  • Tires – The tires wore out way too soon leaving the wires to be visible.
  • Spare tire – The renegade does not come with a spare tire.

Should you buy the 2018 Jeep Renegade?

The 2018 Jeep Renegade is undoubtedly a good vehicle with decent reliability. A constant issue that has been faced in the Renegade is that the engine gets noisy but considering the fact that this car costs the least in its segment makes it the choice for many. If you are looking for a reliable car with ample cabin room and off-road ability, the renegade is the car you should pick. However, if you’re able to push the price up by almost $1,500, the Honda HR-V would be a better option as it does everything that the Renegade does with some extra features and is also much more reliable and refined than the Jeep.
