The 2023 Renegade is entering the market without any changes except in the interior departments like the addition of a new touchscreen interface. The car will be powered by a 1.3-liter inline 4-turbo charged engine, good enough to produce a peak power of 177 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. The base model Renegade Sport comes with a front-wheel drive system as standard, the option of an all-wheel drive system is also available though. The car will be offered with a nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. The Trailhawk trim on offer will be exclusively offroad focussed with 4*4 capability and all-terrain focussed tires. The Jeep Renegade price range for the trims will start from $26,290 for the base Sport model and ends at $32,740 for the Limited trim. The 2023 Renegade will be going against the likes of Honda HR-V, Mazda CX30, and Volkswagen Taos.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Jeep Renegade has always been outspoken in the subcompact SUV world. The rugged looks and different styling have helped the entry-level Jeep to attract a lot of customers. The great road presence it offers, the impeccable offroad capabilities, and the brand value make the Jeep Renegade a worthy competitor in the sub-compact SUV segment.

Even though it is not as off-road capable as many of its elder siblings, it is still the best in its class. The car, however, has aged considerably now While Jeep is trying to maintain its old-school looks, the Renegade now requires a complete makeover if it has to survive the current market.

Features

The 2023 Jeep Renegade will be basically available in four trims, Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. The Renegade Sport comes in standard with a front-wheel drive, but an optional all-wheel drive is also available. The Latitude and Limited get AWD as standard, while a more off-road focussed Trailhawk comes with four-wheel drive. The transmission duty is carried out by a nine-speed automatic unit in all the models. The 2023 Renegade comes equipped with many features like push-button ignition, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, automatic headlights, and many more across various trims. The Trailhawk is equipped with all-terrain tires and a raised suspension for better off-road capability. The Jeep Renegade price range for the trims will start from $26,290 for the base model Renegade Sport and ends at $32,740 for the Limited trim.

We Recommend

No official information regarding the 2023 Renegade has been yet released by the company. However, considering last year's models, the Latitude trim will be the choice to go for because it offers ample features at a reasonable price when compared to Limited and Trailhawk trims.

Release Date

There is no official confirmation regarding the release date. However, the 2023 Jeep Renegade release date is expected to be at the end of September this year.

Engine and Performance

The 2023 Jeep Renegade will be available in a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine capable enough to produce a peak power of 177 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. This will be standard for all the trims. A nine-speed automatic transmission is provided for the car. The front-wheel drive train is offered for the base model with an option of upgrading to all-wheel drive. The Latitude and Limited come with all-wheel drive as standard and the Trailhawk offers a four-wheel drive. The car hits the 60 MPH mark in 8.7 seconds and the quarter-mile run is done in 17.2 seconds, with the top speed being noted at 123 MPH.

Now when we are comparing the 2023 Renegade with the competition, the car is slower than all the rivals in the 0-60 MPH run. The Mazda CX30 and the Volkswagen Taos beat the Jeep by a good margin of 0.9 seconds and 1.1 seconds, respectively. In the quarter-mile run, every competition mentioned here beats the Jeep Renegade making it the slowest among the lot.

2023 Jeep Renegade Ride and Handling

The Jeep Renegade is not an outstanding car when it comes to riding and when the competition is taken into consideration, the baby Jeep is actually a slow one. The speed, however, is not the sole factor that determines the capability of the car. The handling capability of the Renegade is very good and in the corners, the car is stable and well planted. It is pretty much easy to park anywhere too, which makes it city friendly.

2023 Jeep Renegade Braking Performance

The 2023 Jeep Renegade has got a 12-inch brake rotor at the front and an 11-inch rotor at the rear, the feelings from the brake pedals are not overwhelming. There is a feeling of unevenness in the pedal and it does seem to be mushy. The braking could have been better for the car.

The Volkswagen Taos is the only car in the segment which has a bigger front brake rotor than the Jeep at 12.3-inches. The Mazda CX30 and Honda HR-V fall behind with an 11.6-inch and 11.5-inch front brake rotor, respectively. In the case of rear brake, the 2023 Renegade takes the lead with the best in the class size of an 11-inch rotor, and the Honda, Mazda, and Volkswagen fall behind with a size difference of 0.1 inches, 0.6 inches, and 0.3 inches respectively.

Fuel Economy

The Jeep Renegade has a fuel efficiency of 24 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highway, and a combined mileage of 27 MPG. It is not exceptional, but neither it is bad too. The car is mediocre when it comes to fuel efficiency performance. The 12.7 gallons of fuel capacity is good enough to give a driving range of 355.6 miles. The competition, on the other hand, offers better mileage and range when compared to the 2023 Jeep Renegade.

369.6/475.2/422.4 miles

Now the Honda HR-V and the Volkswagen Taos have got bigger fuel capacity with their tank size of 13.2 gallons. Volkswagen is the segment topper in the fuel capacity aspect. All the cars offer a better-combined range than the Jeep renegade with Volkswagen taking the top spot with a range of 422.4 miles. In the fuel efficiency figures too the Taos and CX30 outperform the Renegade by returning a combined mileage of 31 MPG and 26 MPG respectively.

Interior

The Renegade has a very roomy interior with plenty of legroom and headroom to offer. The rear seat, though, is quite cramped and will be very uncomfortable for tall passengers. The ingress and egress are hassle-free with the wide opening doors. The forward visibility is not that great because of the thick roof pillars in the windshield, but the large side windows provide a good side view for the car. The knobs and buttons in the car are easy to use and reach. The fit and finish of the interior are also up to the mark. The seats offer adequate comfort and the materials won't feel cheap at all. Overall quality is maintained in the cabin.

The cargo capacity of the Renegade is a bit less at 18.5 cu-ft, but when the second-row seats are folded it provides a much better cargo capacity at 50.8 cu-ft.

The space to offer is almost identical for the competition and the Renegade while it is not the case of cargo capacity. The Volkswagen Taos offers the best in class cargo capacity to the second row with its 65.9 cu-ft space and the Honda HR-V follows by offering a space of 58.8 cu-ft to the second row. The only car behind the Jeep here is the Mazda CX30.

Standout interior features of the 2023 Jeep Renegade include:

  • Manually adjustable tilt and telescopic steering.
  • Proximity key for doors
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Illuminated glove box
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Front map lights

How intuitive is the 2023 Jeep Renegade’s infotainment system?

The U-Connect infotainment system with the 8.4-inch touchscreen is a perfect combination. Surely, this is one of the best-in-class infotainment systems on offer. It is user-friendly with a high-resolution display and Apple Carplay and Android Auto are provided as standard. Two USB ports and two 12-volt outlets are also provided in the car. The built-in navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio make the infotainment system stand out.

Standout infotainment features in the 2023 Jeep Renegade are:

  • Real-time traffic information through SiriusXM Traffic plus
  • Integrated roof antenna
  • Six speakers
  • Two LCD monitors on the front side
  • Steering mounted controls
  • Streaming audio
Exterior

The Jeep Renegade is a very serious looking car and it surely has a manly appeal. The disappointing fact is that from its introduction in 2015 the design has been carried forward without further changes and the car feels very dated now, it is high time for Jeep to do some noticeable facelift in the exterior department of the Jeep Renegade.

Talking about the dimensions of the car, the Renegade is 166.6 inches in length, 74.2 inches in width, and 66.5 inches in height. The ground clearance is 6.7 inches with a wheelbase of 101.2 inches. With a raised suspension the offroad trim, the Renegade Trailhawk, comes with a ground clearance of 8.7 inches.

The 2023 Jeep Renegade has the shortest wheelbase in the segment. The longest in-class wheelbase is offered by Volkswagen Taos at 105.9 inches. The tallest in the class is the Renegade followed by the Taos and HR-V. respectively. The ground clearance of the trims other than the Trailhawk is also not the best in class, competition like the Mazda CX30 offers ground clearance that is even near to the Trailhawk trim.

Standout exterior features of the car include:

  • Variable intermittent wipers
  • Fully galvanized steel panels
  • Roof rack rails
  • Perimeter lights
  • Cornering lights
  • Front foglamps
Safety

Variety of driver aids are provided in the 2023 Jeep Renegade. Safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind spot detection come in very handy. The only catch is that the adaptive cruise control is offered only on the top trims, while it is standard in all the other competitions. Safety ratings for the 2023 Renegade are not yet available but since the Jeep renegade 2022 is a 4-star-rated car in the NHTSA test, we can expect a similar or even better rating for the 2023 model. Some of the standout safety features of the Jeep Renegade are:

  • Side impact beams
  • Electronic stability control
  • Blind spot detection
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Cross path detection
Competition

Jeep Renegade vs Mazda CX30

The Mazda CX30 offers a more refined driving experience than the Renegade. The high-quality interiors and better styling of the CX30 provide a premium feel. It offers a lot more than the Jeep with the price you are paying for it. The offroad capability is not up to the Renegade though.

Jeep Renegade vs Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is a very good car. When put against the Jeep Renegade, it has better cargo space, better performance, and more cabin space. In the case of fuel economy too HR-V, outperforms the Renegade. The only edge Jeep has got over Honda is its offroad capability.

Jeep Renegade vs Volkswagen Taos

Volkswagen Taos is an excellent car in the segment. The superior handling and driving characteristics make the car stand out. It also has got a spacious cargo area when compared to the Renegade. The noisy power train and slow shifting transmission are its only drawbacks, rest of the areas, it outperforms the Jeep.

Final Verdict

If you are a Jeep enthusiast and want an affordable Jeep surely you can choose the Renegade, but the competition has got much more to offer in this price bracket when the Jeep offers them as optional. With the aging looks and high price point, the Renegade is definitely not a value-for-money car, but it has got that macho looks and road presence that some buyers find very appealing. The offroad capabilities of the car are the only thing that gives it a slight edge over the competitors but that alone won't make the car a worthy pick. So, if you are an ardent Jeep fan, then you can go for the 2023 Renegade.
