The full-size luxury SUV segment has seen excellent SUVs produced by the world’s biggest automakers like Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and GMC. However, very few have lived up to the legacy of one of the pioneers of this segment itself, the Wagoneer. This beloved name has been missing on the lips of American customers since 1991. After a 29-year hiatus, 2022 seems like the right year for Jeep to revive its iconic nameplate after so many years. The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is officially back in business!

Alongside its bigger sibling the Grand Wagoneer, both these SUVs herald in a new era for Jeep by establishing their place at the flagship end of its lineup. With a plethora of high-end luxury features and gizmo, the Wagoneer sends a warning signal to its established rivals like the Cadillac Escalade, the Lincoln Navigator, and other German and Japanese marquees. With the Wagoneer missing from action for so many years, can it establish its place as one of the top leaders of its segment again?

We Recommend

Jeep has provided the Wagoneer for consumers with decent trim options. The Series II Premium is a particular favorite of ours. Incorporating some attractive luxury features such as the Dual Rear Infotainment screens, and safety features like a 360° camera, the Series II Premium seems like a very apt option for its price.

Price

The base Series I trim of the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer will begin at an asking price of $59995. The top-draw Series III Offroad trim will be available at a price of $88665. This price range is still affordable considering other rivals end up more on the pricier side of the spectrum.

Release Date

Although Jeep has revealed several teasers for the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs, the automaker hasn’t provided customers with an official release date. Reservations for the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are still open and you may expect the SUV to arrive in the showrooms by the latter half of 2021.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Engine and Performance

The legendary Jeep Wagoneer is back with a bang, with a 5.7L V-8 under its hood to set in all the fireworks. This engine is rated at a fiery power output of 392 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque. RAM also combines this engine with its latest iteration of the eTorque 48-volt mild hybrid system, which is available as optional on the RAM 1500 pickup. Jeep mates its engine to an 8-speed automatic transmission with a rotary shifter to handle all the heavy workload. This engine is a powerful workhorse, as evident by its monstrous towing capacity of 10000 lbs.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUV in action mode

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer runs on a RWD as standard, which works well in most normal conditions. However, if you want to take your SUV for an adventure in the mud and dirt, the Wagoneer must definitely be upgraded to the 4x4 drivetrain. Speaking of which, the Wagoneer has 3 4x4 drivetrains on offer like most Jeeps- Quadra Trac I with a single-speed transfer case, Quadra Trac II with a two-speed transfer case, and Quadra-Drive II with a two-speed transfer case and an electronically controlled limited rear slip differential.

For more performance off the road, Jeep’s Quadra-Lift air suspension is ready to rip some dirt. This setup adds an additional 3.6 inches of ground clearance. The Selec-Terrain traction control system also gives the driver the privilege of 5 driving modes to choose from, namely- auto, sport, rock, snow, and mud/sand.

The Wagoneer is a bit underpowered compared to its segment leaders like the Escalade and Navigator. Still, its splendid towing capacity outclasses most of its rivals.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Fuel Economy

9.0/10

Potential Wagoneer buyers might be skeptical in some way when they find out their favorite SUV is powered by a big ol’ V6.

However, Jeep leaves no room for worries in the fuel economy sector, with intuitive fuel-saving measures aboard the Wagoneer like a mild-hybrid system and an engine deactivator. The engine deactivator in particular works on a gimmick named Fuel Saver technology.

This system deactivates the fuel and spark and shuts down the intake and exhaust valves on 4 of the 8 cylinders while the SUV is in light mode operation. Thus, this feature helps the Wagoneer to save some valuable fuel economy figures. However, EPA is yet to rate the official MPG figures of the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer.

Since the Wagoneer hasn’t been rated in the fuel economy sector yet, there is no scope for comparison against other rivals. Still, with its fuel-saving measures, the Wagoneer is expected to be the most fuel-efficient SUV among its lot.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Interior

7.0/10

The Wagoneer is back in the full-size luxury SUV segment after a long hiatus. Like the golden old days, the 2022 Wagoneer offers three rows of seats with a seating capacity of up to 8 passengers. The cabin is designed in such a way that it evokes the feeling of spaciousness and tranquility when you first step inside, much in sync with the heritage of the Wagoneer's ancestors.

Unfortunately, there is no sign of wood trimmings on the Wagoneer, although the cabin itself looks like a modern designer’s dream with all the swathes of metal trimmings. The words ‘EST 1963.’ are embedded on each end of the instrument panels and the iconic 2-spoke steering wheel also makes a comeback. Jeep has also embedded various Easter Eggs around every nook and crannies of the cabin to spark an interest in its passengers.

Speaking of which it is easy for the passengers to lose their sense of time, while seated in the otherworldly luxurious seats. While the Grand Wagoneer certainly breaks the boundaries with its royal interior assets, the Wagoneer isn’t far behind with its fine leather upholstered seats and a 12-way power-adjustability for the front seats.

Backseaters are also in for an upscale comfort treatment, thanks to the roomy interior space and a fine selection of seat materials. Other rich features like ambient lighting and a three-zone automatic climate control raise the overall ambiance.

The Wagoneer should also boast generous cargo space, with 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. If you aren’t using the third row, fold it down to free up a total cargo space of 70.9 cubic feet. With both the rear rows folded, the Wagoneer opens up a maximum space of 116.7 cubic feet at your disposal.

The tech suite is dominated by numerous touch screen setups. Taking the centre stage in the middle of the dash is a 10.1-inch touchscreen, that is supposed to be your main entertainment hub. The infotainment system is bolstered by the latest iteration of the UConnect 5 software.

The driver can access all the vehicle information through a snazzy 10.3-inch digital gauge display within his line of sight. Even the front seat passenger can relish with an infotainment display of his own, in the form of a 10.3-inch touchscreen available as optional. Two 10.1-inch touchscreens are artfully mounted to the back of the front seat headrests, which can be purchased separately as an entertainment hub for the backseaters.

All the passengers have a treasure trove of connectivity features onboard, like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, integrated navigation, Amazon FireTV, and Alexa, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. A cherry on the cake is an industry-exclusive Mcintosh audio system, that delivers an astounding sound quality with 19 speakers in its arsenal.

Although the official interior dimensions aren’t yet released for the Wagoneer, the SUV already looks to eclipse its competition with more room in the back than most of its rivals.

Some of the noteworthy interior features of the Jeep Wagoneer are:

  • 10.1 inch infotainment display along with a 10.3 inch digital gauge
  • Amazon FireTV makes a debut
  • Front seats have 12 way power adjustments
  • 3 zone climate control

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Exterior

9.0/10

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer looks Americana from every angle, with a prime example being its sweeping lines and sloping contours that commemorate the lasting legacy of the American landscape. There are tributes to the American flag as well, with little flag symbols hosted aside the ‘Wagoneer’ logo on the sides of the vehicle.

The signature LED headlights and taillights add a modern touch to its retro design while the signature grille that leans into the wind is reminiscent of its yesteryear models. The Wagoneer's strong shoulder line and a fine chrome line just atop its canopy are further odes to the SUV’s glorious heritage. However there is one thing amiss from the yesteryear Jeep models, that is the rolling tailgate window. Jeep engineers decided to skip on this asset to preserve some valuable interior space.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUV

The Wagoneer also missed out on the ‘Trail Rated by Jeep’ designation, particularly owing to its huge size. However, that doesn’t mean the SUV isn’t ready to play around with dirt. The Wagoneer is built on a body-on-frame structure just like the RAM 1500 with an independent front and rear suspension. The Wagoneer will be the most capable off-roader in its segment, thanks to its plethora of off-roading assets that we mentioned earlier in the performance section.

The Wagoneer strikes a perfect combination of all the desirable traits of a full-size SUV- 6,000-pound curb weight, long and wide exteriors, a colossal wheelbase, and plenty of ground clearance.

Some exterior features of the newly releasing Wagoneer are:

  • Proudly displayed the American flag next to its name
  • Thin and wide front grille
  • Giant U shaped windows
  • 20 inch Alloys which can be upgraded to 22 inch premium alloys or 18 inch off-road ones
  • the optional Quadra-Lift air suspension increases the ground clearance to 10 inches

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Safety

7.0/10

Jeep integrates all its latest safety technologies into its new flagship vehicle, the Wagoneer. For starters, the passengers sit in a protective canopy made from high-strength steel. This safety cage is well-geared up to protect your loved ones in the case of a collision.

The SUV features various safety technologies like blind-spot monitoring, cross path detection, adaptive cruise control, and active lane management. The 360-degree surround-view camera also detects pedestrians and stray animals at night time, thanks to its infrared thermal sensors.

Moreover, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer also comes with state-of-the-art driving assistance technologies like Intersection Collision Alert which comes in handy to avoid collisions in a 4-way intersection, pedestrian and cyclist emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, as well as active driver assist. None of the popular crash testing agencies have rated the 2022 Wagoneer yet, but we expect the highest safety ratings if it does go through their analysis.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Competition

8.0/10

2022 Jeep Wagoneer vs 2021 Cadillac Escalade

The Escalade has always been the epitome of a full-sized SUV over the last few years, but that is about to change. The Wagoneer comes home with much fanfare, but its base powertrain still cannot match the prowess of the Escalade in the power charts.

There is a catch though, the Wagoneer’s 10,000 lbs towing capacity is leagues ahead compared to the 8,200 lbs towing capacity of the Escalade. The Wagoneer also excels off-road much like a true Jeep, while the Escalade feels more content while confined to the streets. Again, the Wagoneer might have its share of parking issues, with this SUV being surprisingly wider than the already massive Escalade.

2021 Cadillac Escalade

Interior-wise, we are in love with the Escalade’s 38-inch curved dashboard display. The Wagoneer also impresses with its numerous touchscreens and its exclusive Mcintosh system. The Wagoneer also just edges out the Escalade in terms of cargo space. In the end, this duel boils down to personal preference although the Wagoneer has a lower base price.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer vs 2021 Lincoln Navigator

The ever-lasting battle between RAM and Ford in the heavy-duty vehicles department carries over to the full-size SUV segment as well. The Navigator is one of Ford’s finest creations, while the Wagoneer is a valuable relic that has been brought to life again by Jeep.

2021 Lincoln Navigator

In the power department, the Navigator definitely has the bragging rights although the Wagoneer hits back with its splendid towing capacity. The Navigator’s interiors take on a more upscale look this year while the Wagoneer woos onlookers with its mixture of retro and modern interior design.

Moving on to the cargo department, the Wagoneer just emerges the winner. The Wagoneer also has more off-roading features in its arsenal, although it can be a pain to maneuver in the city owing to its huge size. Both SUVs have a plethora of cutting-edge technology and comfort features. In the end, the Navigator’s pricier MSRP might prove to be the telling difference.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class has been at the top of the game with its wide lineup of powerful SUVs. The rebirth of the Jeep Wagoneer however makes all its rivals at the top of its pile sweat with fear.

Speaking of which, the Wagoneer’s base powertrain outclasses the base GLS in terms of power. Things do get one-sided in the power department in favor of the Germans when you consider the top-end GLS-Class SUVs. The GLS-Class also fits in well within the size requirements of a tidy three-row SUV, while the Wagoneer is much bigger and wider.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

Both the SUVs have a treasure trove of intuitive gizmo and luxury features as well. The Wagoneer has the overall advantage in terms of price but things do get expensive when you decide to go off the trail. The Merc is the better choice if you aren’t planning to do a lot of chauffeuring around.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Final Verdict

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer looks ever-ready to grace the roads again, with its capable powertrain and off-roading capabilities. The SUV looks ready to compete against the best in its class with its awesome interior quality and cargo capacity, a feature-filled tech suite, and all-round safety suite.

The SUV establishes its place as one of the elites, much like it did in its golden age. The Wagoneer certainly won’t make an instant impact provided the number of sensational full-size SUVs in the market today. Still, its 2022 incarnation appears as the right small step into a bright future.
