The Wrangler is available in numerous configurations in both two-door and four-door configurations. The diesel engine is available only in the 4-door Unlimited models and there are plenty of trims and sub-trims available with the diesel-powered Wrangler. Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The engine under the hood is a 3.0 L diesel V6 and it will cost you $3,500 for the engine and another $2,500 for the only transmission option available with this engine which is an 8-speed automatic. That makes the Wrangler diesel around $6,000 more expensive than the base gas-powered models. The 2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel model doesn’t have any diesel-powered competitors, so we are pitting it against its strongest gas-powered competitors which are the Ford Bronco, Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-road Premium, and the Land Rover Defender 110’s base model.

2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel SUV Features

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel is available in four main trim options which are Sport, Sport S, Rubicon, and Sahara. All trims are 4-door ‘Unlimited’ versions as the diesel engine is only available in that configuration. The Sport and Sport S models come in various other sub-trim options which are Willys Sport, Willys, Islander, 80th Anniversary, Freedom, and Altitude. The Sahara is the more road-oriented version of the Wrangler but it is also available in an Altitude sub-trim. The Rubicon is the most capable off-roader in the Wrangler lineup and it comes with an Off-road+ mode.

The top-end, most luxurious model is named High Altitude and it resides on top of the Wrangler lineup. Including all these special editions and sub-trims available, the 2022 Wrangler is available in a total of twelve models. There is attire and configuration available for your specific likes and purpose. All models are powered by the same 3.0 L diesel V6 engine under the hood and come with only a single standard color option which is white while for any other color choice you will have to pay extra. We Recommend

It is actually hard to recommend one from this confusing list of models the Wrangler is offered in. But the Sport S would be the best option as you can equip it according to your preferences and there are plenty of options available to make your Wrangler more suitable for the road or dirt as per your usage and needs. For a superior off-roading experience, you could opt for the Rubicon trim, and for a luxurious travel experience, the High Altitude would be ideal, but the Sport S is the trim that strikes the right balance between price and customizability.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Diesel Release Date

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler is expected to debut in the fall of 2021.

2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel SUV Engine and Performance

All diesel models of the Jeep Wrangler are powered by the same 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine that puts out 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The performance is impressive and the torque output especially in the low-end RPMs is outstanding. The only transmission on offer with the diesel engine is an 8-Speed automatic transmission. The Wrangler delivers enough power and the amount of torque available in the lower RPMs is plenty. The 2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel can achieve a speed of 60mph in 6.7 seconds and it crosses the quarter-mile mark in 15.3 seconds.

The Wrangler diesel is limited to a top speed of 110 mph as part of safety regulations by Jeep. On-road performance is not where the Wrangler excels and the traditional body-on-frame construction affects handling on-road very much. The steering wheel also feels unresponsive and slightly odd. But while getting off the tarmac, the Wrangler performs impressively, the 33-inch tires and lockable differentials along with the high amount of low-end torque make the Wrangler a beast in all kinds of terrains.

The 2022 Ford Bronco is the fastest and most powerful one here while the Wrangler is the most torquey, thanks to the diesel powertrain. The Land Rover Defender is the least powerful and slowest one, but we know that it is a premium product and the deficiency of power is because it’s the version. But strictly from a performance standpoint, the Defender does disappoint as it is the most expensive option here.

2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel SUV Fuel Economy

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel is as expected a step above all of the gas-powered competition. It provides an impressive fuel efficiency of 22 mph in the city environment, 29 mpg on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 25 mpg. These figures are evidently impressive for an off-roader. And combined with a 21.5-gallon fuel capacity the Wrangler diesel delivers a long range of 473 miles in the city, 623 miles on the highway, and a range of around 537 miles in combined road and driving conditions.

There is no direct competition to the Wrangler in terms of fuel efficiency as all others have gas-powered engines under the hood and none of these 4WD off-roaders are known for being efficient. However, the Defender with the weakest engine under the hood is the better performer among the competitors. It also is second to the Wrangler in terms of range as it also has the largest fuel capacity.

2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel SUV Interior

The cabin of the Wrangler is well-built and made up of quality materials. But it is not as luxurious as some of the competition. The interior is black-themed and there are Nappa leather-covered bucket seats in the top-end trim. However, too much importance is not given by Jeep for passenger comfort inside the cabin of the Wrangler as functionality is the topmost thing they aim to achieve and they have succeeded in doing so. There are multiple controls places on the dash as well as the center console of the Wrangler which is more abundant inside the more off-road capable Rubicon trim. But it is nicely laid out and not cluttered or unintuitive to use.

Outward visibility is good, and the flexibility to remove the doors, as well as the roof, also offers better practicality. The room inside is not super-impressive and you might also need to use the grab handles for ingress and egress. The Wrangler offers a cramped shoulder room which results in making the inside of the cabin seem small. The cargo capacity is also not much measuring just below 32 cu-ft. Another issue is regarding the noise isolation of the cabin, there is hardly any kind of isolation in the soft top models, but even inside the hardtop model with doors, there is loads of road and tire noise creeping in.

The 2022 Land Rover Defender is definitely the most upscale and premium product with the most luxurious interior here. The Defender also offers the most space on the inside while the 4Runner offers more cargo space. The Wrangler happens to be the inferior one here both in terms of space as well as interior features and luxury. The Ford Bronco also has an upscale interior compared to the Wrangler. The following are the most important interior features of the 2022 Jeep Wrangler-

  • Nappa Leather-Trimmed Seating with Quilting
  • Instrument Panel Bolster with Caramel Stitching and Light Black Chrome Accent Rings
  • Leather-Trimmed Bucket Seats
  • 4-Way Manual Adjustable Front Passenger Seat
  • 2-Way Manual Lumbar Adjustable Driver Seat
  • 6-Way Manual Driver Seat
  • Driver-Seat Height-Adjuster
  • Reclining Front Seats

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel comes with a Uconnect 4 infotainment unit with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and navigation. The infotainment unit is responsive and easy to use, but it’s not the most updated or intuitive on offer in the segment. The Defender, however, has the best infotainment unit among all of these off-roaders and the extra cost does offer extra functionality. The Wrangler also gets a premium audio system from Alpine which is also strictly above average. The following are the prominent infotainment features inside the 2022 Jeep Wrangler-

  • 8.4-Inch Radio and Premium Audio Group
  • Uconnect 4 NAV with 8.4-Inch Touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay Support and Android Auto Integration
  • Alpine Premium Audio System and SiriusXM Guardian
  • SiriusXM Radio Trial Subscription
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hot Spot
  • HD Radio
  • Integrated Center-Stack Radio
  • Integrated Voice Command with Bluetooth
  • Media Hub with 2 Charge-Only USB Ports

2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel SUV Exterior

The Wrangler looks capable, powerful, and obviously iconic from the outside. There is nothing much to describe aerodynamics in the case of this or any Wrangler or any of these off-roaders for that matter. But we know speed runs are not something these machines are aimed at. And for what they are supposed to do, the Wrangler excels as it always did, which is in extreme off-roading and in conquering the roughest of terrains. The Wrangler could be configured and specced up according to how much capability you need from it and how much you want to push it into the wilderness.

The Wrangler comes with Dana solid front and rear axles, Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential, off-road rock rails for uncompromised off-road supremacy. The wheels in the Wrangler include 17-inch ones with 32-inch tires wrapped around in the base trims while the Rubicon could also be fitted with 35-inch tires. The more road-focused Sahara trim comes with larger 18-inch wheels while the High Altitude trim gets even larger 20-inch ones. Overall it is a highly customizable vehicle which is impressive but the fact that white is the only standard color option is a bummer and for any other shade you will have to pay extra.

The Wrangler is a good-looking SUV but also does the competition. The Defender looks the most premium from the outside also while the Bronco is surely the direct competition to the Wrangler, in terms of exterior beauty. The Wrangler and the Bronco are also the lightest and smaller ones comparing dimensions. The Wrangler offers the most ground clearance while the Defender has the least. The following are the most important exterior attributes of the 2022 Jeep Wrangler-

  • 20-Inch Aluminum Wheels with Gloss Black Finish
  • Premium LED Lighting Package
  • Body-Color Exterior Accents
  • Black Sunrider Soft Top/Body-Color 3-Piece Hard Top
  • Deep-Tint Sunscreen Windows
  • Tinted Windshield Glass

  • Power-Heated Mirrors
  • Body-Color Grille with Gloss-Black

2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel SUV Safety

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel has not been tested or rated by NHTSA or IIHS, but being a carryover model, the scores and ratings of the 2021 Wrangler Unlimited could be considered. It got impressive 4-star ratings for frontal and rollover protection while IIHS gives it ‘Good’ under various parameters which ensures that the Wrangler is a safe vehicle. The Jeep Wrangler is also programmed to a 110-MPH vehicle max speed calibration also. The following are its standout safety features-

  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Blind-Spot and Cross-Path Detection
  • Daytime Running Lamp LED Accents
  • Electronic Roll Mitigation
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Hill-Start Assist
  • ParkSense Rear Park-Assist System
  • ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera
  • Security Alarm
  • Selectable Tire-Fill Alert

2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel SUV Competition

Jeep Wrangler Diesel vs 2021 Ford Bronco

The Ford Bronco is the most direct competition against the Wrangler, and it is truly a superb performer. The Bronco offers a more capable powertrain and faster performance. It also matches the Wrangler in terms of off-road performance while also being more luxurious on the inside. The Bronco also offers lots of customization options and it looks cool and stylish with a retro vibe which is appreciated in this segment. Overall, all of these positives make the Bronco the better choice in this segment. However, the Wrangler does offer better fuel efficiency and more torque as it comes with a diesel powertrain.

Jeep Wrangler Diesel vs 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD off-road Premium

The Toyota 4Runner TRD off-road Premium is a capable machine in the segment but is definitely overshadowed by the Wrangler. The Toyota is impressively capable off-road, but not as much as the Wrangler. The Wrangler also offers customization options and configurations. The diesel powertrain is more capable while being much more fuel-efficient than the 4Runner. The 8-speed transmission is also more high-tech and updated compared to the 5-speed one in the Toyota. Overall, the Wrangler is the better choice compared to the Toyota.

Jeep Wrangler Diesel vs 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 P300

The Land Rover Defender returns after a break and continues the great Defender legacy. But is the base model with the least capable powertrain enough to keep up with the Wrangler? Well, in that case, it is not. The powertrain doesn’t match the torquey diesel V6 under the hood of the Wrangler. However, the Land Rover has a more luxurious and premium interior made up of much better quality materials. It also has better seats and on-road ride quality and stability while the cabin is also much quieter. But considering the higher price and lower power output, the Wrangler is the better choice.

2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel SUV Final Verdict

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Diesel is the only capable off-roader available with a diesel powertrain in the segment. That makes it a super choice as there is no proper competition that offers a similar amount of torque or fuel efficiency. The Wrangler as we all know is an impressively capable machine off the tarmac and this diesel-powered one is no different. There are numerous sub-trims and customization options available to configure the Wrangler according to your need and preference. All of this makes the 2022 Jeep Wrangler diesel a great option in this segment.
