Debuted just last year, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 will be back for the 2022 model year with no significant changes. This 470-hp Hemi V8-powered 392 is the first of its kind, occupying the top spot in the 2022 Wrangler lineup. The new Rubicon 392 is an absolute powerhouse that propels to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The 392 comes equipped with all of the Rubicon's impressive off-road ability but adds a new dimension of muscle-car-like power and sound to the Wrangler.

For 2022, the Jeep Wrangler is available with the new Xtreme Recon package with the Wrangler Willys, which cost almost $3000 less than the Rubicon. The Rubicon 392 is the most expensive Wrangler, which is expected to be priced similar to the 2021 model, starting at $73,500. With new competition coming in, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 rivals the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro, the all-new Ford Bronco, and the time-tested Land Rover Defender. Which one should you get? Check out the Exper Review of our Wrangler below to help you decide.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is expected to be priced at around the $73,500 mark. The SUV still holds a powerful 6.4L Naturally Aspirated Hemi V8 capable of churning out 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The SUV competes with other giants in the segment like the 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 XS Edition, the 2022 Ford Bronco Advanced 4x4, and the 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro 4WD.

The 392 is based on the Rubicon model, which means it comes ready for extreme off-roading. The Rubicon spec adds standard front and rear locking differentials, Dana solid axles, and a sway bar. Apart from a 6.4-liter V8 with 470 hp and a 4WD system, Jeep also upgrades the underpinnings, including Fox shock absorbers, and massive brakes. For exclusive styling, Jeep offers the 392 with bronze exterior and interior accents.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

"The top powerhouse is the new Rubicon 392... The result is a Wrangler that can accelerate to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds and still tackle off-road trails with ease." - Kbb.com

If power and performance are your topmost priorities in an adventure SUV, then the Wrangler Rubicon 392 won’t disappoint you a bit. With a gigantic 6.4 L naturally aspirated Hemi V8, the Rubicon 392 gets an impressive 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft. of torque that helps the Wrangler get through most of the terrains and obstacles that come its way like a cakewalk. The Hemi V8 is a serious powertrain unit that helps the Wrangler accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, which is extremely quick for an adventure SUV that weighs a great deal and has extreme off-road capabilities.

The Hemi V8 powertrain unit comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox that is configured to adapt to extreme off-road conditions. The Tru-Lok electric front and rear axle-locking differential take care of the off-road duties and help the 392 to scale through any kind of terrain. Also, the 392 is the first Wrangler to offer paddle shifters for manual control. More differentiating factors are the Amax shifting that allows the 392 to accelerate so rapidly, even though it weighs 5,103 lbs. Unlike other Wrangler models, the 392 features a full-time 4WD system. You will get additional Off-road Plus with Sand and Rock modes.

Compared to its rivals, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 might seem to be on the pricier side in its segment. But considering the fact that it gets the largest powertrain unit in its class that helps it dynamically improve its capabilities, the Rubicon 392 seems to be a true gem in the segment and a favorite amongst a great number of off-road enthusiasts. The Land Rover Defender XS Edition is the closest rival to the Wrangler Rubicon 392 when it comes to price, power, and off-road capabilities.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Compared to its rivals with hybrid or turbocharged powertrains, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 isn’t the most fuel-efficient due to its massive Hemi V8 engine. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 delivers a combined fuel economy of 14 miles per gallon, which is undoubtedly the lowest fuel economy figure in its class. With a 21.5-gallon fuel tank capacity, the 392 delivers a mixed driving range of 301 miles, which seems to be way less compared to what some of its rivals have on offer.

The Land Rover Defender XS Edition gets the best fuel economy figures in the segment, thanks to its turbocharged engine with a hybrid assist system that helps it achieve a combined fuel economy of 19 MPG and a driving range of 452.2 miles. The Ford Bronco manages to offer the same combined economy as the Defender, whereas the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro stands quietly between the Bronco and Wrangler with a combined mileage of just 17 mpg.

Interior
8.0/10

"It's not the most spacious or accommodating SUV available, but the Wrangler provides a seamless blend of vintage and modern Jeep character. " - CarandDriver.com

The 2022 Wrangler Rubicon 392 doesn’t get any major updates this year as compared to its outgoing model year. The interior design comes straight from the regular Rubicon trim. The dashboard design layout is rugged with a hard plastic surface. The circular HVAC vents and the flat dashboard setup all have been signature elements of the Jeep Wrangler for many years. The list of interior features seems pretty eccentric for an SUV that costs more than $75,000 as there are features like illuminated cup holders and heated steering wheel with leather upholstery, but at the same time, the front seats get manual adjustability and lumbar support.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 SUV cockpit area

to differentiate the 392 from other Wrangler models, Jeep offers a full leather interior and a bronze theme on the inside. The exclusive interior features include paddle shifters, off-road menus on the infotainment system, and a newly designed instrument cluster. Available only in 4-door form, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 is a five-seater. Upfront, the headroom is 40.8 inches with the hardtop in place, offering generous room and comfort. It features 6-way manually adjustable front seats. The soft top increases the headroom to 42.8 inches in the front and 42.6 inches in the rear. The second-row seats don’t offer the best space in the segment and feel cramped when compared to the Wrangler’s rivals.

The Wrangler's trunk capacity of 27.7 cubic feet seems to be less than what the rest of the SUVs in its class offer. It has a maximum trunk capacity of 67.4 cubic feet with rear seats folded. The other midsize SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro as well as the Ford Bronco provide a much larger cargo bay. The Land Rover Defender 110’s interior, on the other hand, feels much more premium and futuristic when compared to the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392. Some of the standout interior features of the 392 are:

  • Voice Activated Dual-Zone Automatic climate controls
  • Leather upholstery
  • Full-black interior
  • Heated leather steering wheel
  • Heated front seats

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Talking about the infotainment system, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 gets the latest and updated Uconnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display unit. The audio system consists of a 552w Premium Alpine audio system with 9 speakers and SiriusXM Satellite. Connectivity features include Bluetooth and smartphone integration such as Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The 4G internet access WiFi hotspot is standard too.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 SUV infotainment screen

The Uconnect infotainment system is an extremely intuitive interface. There are redundant audio and climate controls on the dashboard. Also, all of the controls are water-resistant. Some key infotainment features are:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • An 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C touchscreen infotainment system
  • 9-speaker Alpine audio system
  • In-built navigation
  • SiriusXM support
  • 4G Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity

"Why mess with success? The Wrangler (still) looks great." - TheCarConnection.com

When it comes to exterior design and styling, the Jeep Wrangler is one of the easiest SUVs to be recognized on the streets with its tough utilitarian looks and exterior elements. The Jeep design DNA is reflected through every bit and piece on the exterior of the new Rubicon 392 that includes the grille, round headlamps, massive bumpers, wheel arches, and the rear door with a spare wheel. To differentiate the 392 from the other Wrangler trims, Jeep adds unique bronze accents and 17-inch Beadlock-capable wheels with 33-inch off-road tires.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 SUV

With the Wrangler Rubicon 392, the customizable options that come with it are endless. The manual convertible rooftop along with the Rubicon Rock Rails, Steel bumpers with a Warn winch, and steel belly pan convey that this Wrangler can hit rough terrains all day without a second thought. The auto on/off LED headlamps and the LED tail lamps along with the front LED daytime running lights to add some flair to the rough external styling as well.

Safety
7.5/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 hasn’t been fully crash-tested by the NHTSA, but the regular four-door Wrangler Unlimited, on which the 392 is based, received four out of five stars for the frontal crash and three out of five stars in the rollover test. The IIHS has given the Wrangler the highest rating of Good in four crash tests and "Marginal" ratings in the driver-side small overlap front crash test. The Wrangler models with automatic high-beam headlights also received a Marginal rating for forward visibility.

Apart from its strong chassis integrity and hardcore exterior elements designed for off-road use, the Rubicon 392 has the best active safety aids and features onboard in the Wrangler lineup, including blind-spot monitoring, cross-path detection, rear park assist, advanced brake assist, auto high-beam control, full-speed forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control with stop. Some of the notable safety features include:

  • Hill Start Assist
  • Trailer sway damping

Competition
8.0/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 vs. 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 XS Edition

The 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 XS Edition is truly one of the toughest competitors to the Wrangler Rubicon 392 as it is cheaper and brings in a ton of sophisticated off-road aids and other features that provide great off-road capability. The Defender is truly one of Land Rover’s best SUVs in the market today and outperforms the Wrangler Rubicon 392 with its hybrid powertrain and top-of-the-line off-road assist features that just make sense.

2022 Land Rover Defender 110 XS Edition

2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 vs. 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition Advanced

The Ford Bronco is definitely one of those SUVs that is frequently compared with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon due to its similar off-road capabilities and utility quotient. The Ford Bronco proves to be a cheaper option compared to the Jeep, but the Jeep comes with a very attractive powertrain unit with its Hemi V8. However, if the rumors are true and we do get a V8 Bronco for 2022, things will get interesting, to say the least.

2021 Ford Bronco First Edition Advanced

2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 vs. 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro might not have the off-road capabilities that match the Wrangler Rubicon 392, but it definitely proves to be more reliable and has tons of space inside to pack your stuff as you leave to explore on your weekends. The 4Runner also proves to be cheaper than the Wrangler Rubicon 392 by a good margin, which is also an advantage on its side. While the TRD Pro has its fair share of capabilities to handle off-road terrain, it can't compete with what Jeep offers with the 2022 Rubicon 392.

2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

Final Verdict

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 isn’t any normal SUV that you would find on the road. It is a lifestyle SUV that is best suited for those who have serious off-road and exploration aspirations. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 sure is an expensive SUV, but it gets the right kit with it to make you feel like you are living your life to the fullest out there on the off-road terrains, and that is exactly its greatest attribute.
