The Jeep Wrangler has always been one of the most iconic SUVs to come out of America, paving the way for the hardcore off-roading segment. However, in recent years, the wrangler is starting to show its age and is playing catch-up with the competition in many ways. As usual, the Wrangler continues to be available in the traditional 2-door and 4-door configuration with the usual traits like removable doors and top. The latest JL model launched back in 2018 gets several luxuries on the higher trims and a capable infotainment system. There are a total of five engines to choose from starting with a basic 2.0L inline-4 to a massive 6.4L V-8.

Off-Road enthusiasts have several other models to choose from including the Toyota 4Runner and recent entrants like the Ford Bronco and Land River Defender. While it is very basic in the lower trim levels, affordability is key with the Wrangler and you can get your hands on the base Sport model with manual windows and no power accessories for just over $30,000. However, the range-topping Rubicon 392 will cost more than twice as much at $78,690.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Interior Design, Dimensions, and Comfort

As is expected with a Jeep Wrangler, the interiors get a retro-themed design with plenty of switchgear and a color scheme that matches the exterior. However, practicality takes a back seat in favor of design, leaving average space for passengers and minimal storage spaces inside the cabin. The Wrangler continues to be available in both 2-door and 4-door variants with removable doors and top. Even air conditioning comes as an option on the base trims and you get manual wind-up windows as standard.

The retro theme is evident when you consider the dashboard design. Unlike the simple layout of modern SUVs, the dashboard of the Wrangler looks cluttered and utilitarian. While the build quality is good enough, the quality of plastics used is average. The exterior color scheme is reflected on the inside across the length of the dashboard and the infotainment display sits neatly in the middle. Below it, the climate controls are placed within easy reach. Because of the removable doors, the window switches and locking controls are also moved to the center stack. This busy design leaves very little space for storage and there are no cubby holes or trays. Off-road controls and drive mode switches are also placed neatly at the bottom along with some customizable auxiliary switches.

Even with the two-door model, the front seats offer plenty of space. The high seating position also offers an unobstructed view ahead, aided by the upright windshield. However, the blocky design and upright seating do limit legroom slightly for taller passengers. While the base trims are barren, features like leather upholstery and heated seats are available with the Rubicon 392 model.

With the 2-door models, getting into the rear seats is a squeeze, and only possible for slim and flexible adults. Once inside, adults can stay comfortable for longer journeys. However, if you plan on carrying more than two passengers often, the 4-door Unlimited model is recommended to free up more space and for easier access.

Fortunately, Jeep includes a center armrest for both rows. Air conditioning is only available as an option on the base trims, while the Sahara and higher trims get automatic climate control as standard. Since the Wrangler stands for adventure, just take the roof off and enjoy the fresh air whenever possible.

Second Row (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (in)

While the Jeep Wrangler is marketed as a lifestyle SUV, that doesn’t stop it from offering one of the most spacious and practical interiors in its class, beating both the Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner. However, the new Ranger Rover Defender is still the most practical option. The interiors of the Jeep are also impressive, offering a unique vintage design compared to rivals.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Infotainment

Depending on how deep your wallet is, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler can be equipped with three different systems. The base trims get a basic 5-inch system running the older Uconnect 3 interface and only include a handful of features like Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Opting for air-conditioning on the lower trims will swap it out for a bigger 7-inch display that runs the Uconnect 4 interface and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Infotainment System

The Rubicon and higher trims get an even bigger 8.4-inch system with some additions like satellite and HD radio,4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-speaker Alpine audio system.

Key infotainment features

  • 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Uconnect 4 interface
  • 8-speaker Alpine premium audio system
  • SiriusXM satellite and HD radio
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Built-in navigation

2022 Jeep Wrangler Cargo Capacity

Even with the boxy design, the Wrangler offers just 31.7 cubic feet of storage with all the seats up, which is among the lowest in its class. Folding the rear seats will provide up to 72.4 cubic feet of storage.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Cargo Space

Some usable features like tie-down hooks and under-floor storage are also provided to improve practicality. However, the rear seats don’t fold flat, making it harder to carry larger items.

Maximum Cargo Capacity (ft³)

While it excels in the passenger space department, the Jeep Wrangler falls behind all of its competitors if we consider cargo capacity and practicality. With its traditional SUV body style, the Toyota 4Runner leads the pack followed by the Ford Bronco and Land Rover Defender. While the seats can be folded, they don't fold flat in the Jeep Wrangler, further limiting flexibility.

Additional Interior Storage Spaces

Despite what the utilitarian exteriors may suggest, the Wrangler gets one of the least practical cabins in the segment, offering just a handful of storage spaces inside the cabin like two cup holders at the front and a center storage bin. Even the door pockets have nets limiting their usage. Jeep hasn’t even bothered with a smartphone tray, forcing you to dump your phone in the center console.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Creature Comforts

Since the Jeep Wrangler is marketed as a lifestyle SUV for going on adventures, it doesn’t get much in the way of luxuries and creature comforts, especially on the lower trim levels. The base Sport trim only gets manual cranking windows and cloth upholstery. Even the addition of air conditioning will require upgrading to the Soort S model, which also adds power windows, power door locks, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Shelling out even more for the Sahara model will finally add some creature comforts like automatic climate control and remote keyless entry.

Next up is the Rubicon model which only focuses on technical upgrades and doesn’t get any features to improve comfort. However, the range-topping Rubicon 392 trim adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Even with the boxy design and large footprint, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler fails to offer the practicality and comfort of its rivals. However, the retro-themed interior design continues to impress, with several design elements dating back to the original CJ models. Since the Wrangler is focused on the adventurous crowd, we doubt if its lack of storage spaces or interior space will deter buyers. The Wrangler has always been about off-road adventures, and from that perspective, the interiors are acceptable and look the part, although they’re far from being practical.
