When a purposeful minivan meets class, something like the all-new 2022 Kia Carnival is the outcome. Replacing Kia Sedona, this Kia with its crossover-like proportions, 290-hp 3.5-litre V-6 engine, and poised handling can competently challenge some top-rated MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles) like the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and Chrysler Pacifica. All that, within a budget under $47k.

2022 Kia Carnival For Sale

The brand-new Kia Carnival MPV starts at an MSRP of $32,300 for the base Carnival LX. If you opt for the "Seat Package", the LX-Seat Package will cost $34,300. The EX trim offers a wide range of luxurious features over the LX for a price of $37,800. The most equipped Carnival trims - SX and SX Prestige will set you back by $41,300 and $46,300 respectively. Best leasing options include a monthly payment of $471 for 36 months with a $2,000 signing amount.

2022 Kia Carnival Buying Advice

Although Kia Carnival is an all-new entry in the Kia family, it replaces the Kia Sedona in the lineup. If you're on a budget and still wish to buy a feature-rich van, the 2021 Kia Sedona won't be a bad choice either. You can get a used 2021 Kia Sedona for an average price of $31,929. Even better, the average price for a used 2020 Kia Sedona begins at $22,936.

Inside, the 2022 Carnival can seat up to 7-8 people depending on your pick. The 11-Seater Kia Carnival is yet to be released in the US, and is expected to be referred to as the "Grand Carnival". The disappointing bit, however, remains the lack of AWD and more powerful engine options, but you get a Telluride-like interior, loads of advanced safety features, and an unbeatable 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The brand new Kia Carnival is a major upgrade over the last year's Sedona, be it in terms of styling, comfort, or handling. You get sleek headlamps, a dual-sunroof setup, 19-inch alloys on the outside. The Carnival's interior lets you boast of a dual touchscreen setup, Leather Seats with heating and ventilation functions on the first two rows, and even a Dual-Screen Rear Seat Entertainment System for your friends in the back.

There's only one engine option - a 3.5L, V6 making 290 HP and driving the front wheels only (FWD). On the safety front, the Carnival gets some notable features like Standard proximity-activated sliding doors, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a standard rear occupant alert system. Infact, the new 2022 Kia Carnival Minivan wins the Top Safety Pick Award from IIHS.

Buying Advice

Although the Carnival offers a large set of standard features even for the base "LX" trim, we'd recommend the "EX" trim priced at $37,800 that gets you some segment-best features like in-cabin intercom, in-cabin camera, Kia Connect with Sat-Nav, and powered seats and doors.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

All Carnival models feature a 290-horsepower V6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. AWD option is not available with the Kia minivan. Kia's 3.5L V6 cranks out 290-hp and 262 lb-ft of torque and is the most powerful powertrain amongst the other minivans. The new 2022 Carnival can do a 0-60 mph sprint in just 7.0 seconds, which is better than most rivals including Pacifica, or VW Atlas.

2022 Kia Carnival Engine Bay

Though this won’t transform the 2022 Carnival into a track weapon but rather ensures easy overtaking on highways without the engine feeling strained. This V6 revs smoothly to get the maximum torque of 262 lb-ft at a high spin - 5,000 rpm. Besides that, the Kia Carnival is brawny and muscular enough to tow up to 3,500 lbs in addition to its 4,400-plus lbs curb weight.

Though for the buyers that have just turned into nature-preservers, the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica also offer a hybrid powertrain. The Honda Odyssey offers a slightly lower engine output but is a more athletic option than the Carnival, which prefers relaxed driving.

How does the 2022 Kia Carnival Minivan Ride and Handle?

The Kia Carnival is actually quick, and not just for a minivan.  The Carnival offers a relaxing drive, with a commanding seating position, and great visibility. The Carnival’s soft suspension tuning careens over bumps but hampers the handling. The floatiness and body lean around the corners are common. Also, the Carnival’s steering is light and feels a little disconnected if you are looking for athletic driving performance.

2022 Kia Carnival Minivan driving view

The Carnival has multiple driving modes including a Sport setting. With a vehicle of this size, the 360-degree camera system of the SX trim is a much-needed requirement. Kia has used the same K5 sedan platform for the Carnival MPV, along with the use of ultra-high-strength steel to make the foundation lighter, and quieter than the predecessor.  If you are looking for something exciting and sporty, then the Toyota Sienna might be your thing. In terms of road noise and insulation, the Carnival is impressive.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The EPA estimated fuel economy numbers of the 2022 Carnival are 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. The Carnival's mileage is slightly better than the outgoing 2021 Sedona. Kia fits a 19-gallon fuel tank that offers around 418-miles of total driving range.

With a more muscular engine, the 2022 Kia Carnival trails the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica, but the margin isn’t huge. If you are looking for the best economy in the segment, the Toyota Sienna is the star of the show, rated at 36 MPG combined. The Sienna drops the V6 in favor of a smaller engine and hybrid technology. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is also a good option if fuel efficiency is your priority.

Interior
6.0/10

Being a minivan, or say, MPV, the Carnival offers three rows of seating with the capacity to accommodate seven or eight people, depending on trim level. The SX Prestige model swaps the regular second-row bench for “VIP lounge seats”, which is luxurious but cuts down the seating to seven and cargo space by 60 cubic feet as you can't fold them. However, the passenger room inside is appreciated - legroom measures 41.1 inches up front, 40.5 inches in the second row, and 35.6 inches in the last row.

Other strong points of the new Kia Carnival are a high-quality cabin material, user-friendly infotainment system, and clever family-friendly features like a cabin camera and intercom system. Kia offers countless charging ports and cupholders for extra convenience.

2022 Kia Carnival dashboard

Moreover, the third-row has enough room to fit three adults, but since the ground is slightly high, and thigh support is not too great, they would start to feel uncomfortable. In Carnival, the cargo space behind the third row is rated at 40.2 cubic feet, which expands to 86.9 cubes behind the second row. Most trims offer an impressive 145.1 cubic feet of space behind the first row, which is on par with the max cargo capacity of the Odyssey.

The base trim comes with nominal cloth upholstery, but as you upgrade to upper SX trims for faux leather or real soft leather. Moreover, there are soft-touch materials all around, while a large center console and an optional Mercedes-style dual-screen infotainment system with a digital gauge display are notable design changes. The cabin is modern as compared to the Sedona, with a brilliant dashboard design and metallic inlays with hexagonal patterns.

2022 Kia Carnival Captain Chairs

The word ‘minivan’ is synonymous with comfort, practicality, and spaciousness, and all these rivals stand true to these claims. Each of them is spacious and can take the form of a luxurious cabin in their top-spec. Buyers will find the Kia Carnival and Honda Odyssey more spacious in the third row. The interior highlights of the 2022 Kia Carnival include:

  • Power Sliding Rear Doors
  • Smart Key w/ Push Button & Remote Start
  • Rear Park Distance Warning - Reverse Sensors
  • 7 USB Ports (6 Charging, 1 Media)
  • Rear passenger air-conditioning
  • Sliding and removable 2nd-row seats

2022 Kia Carnival Infotainment and Features

It’s not just the relaxing cabin, but the 2022 Kia Carnival also boasts advanced tech-laden features too. The dash houses an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, but we’d advise fitting a dual 12.3-inch display that is spread across 2/3 of the Carnival’s dashboard. Pick any of these and you’ll have the latest UVO infotainment interface. The interface is quite intuitive and the sharp graphic display makes it effortless to access the menus.

2022 Kia Carnival Infotainment System

The Carnival can also equip Rear Passenger View & Talk feature that allows the front driver and passenger to communicate with the third-row passenger(s). It includes a camera mounted on the roof that displays the view of the space behind the front seats on the infotainment display. Kia even added a one-button smart open-and-close for the rear power-sliding doors and tailgate, making the 2022 van more practical. The system is also equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Various quirky features include:

  • Optional Rear seat entertainment system
  • 12-speaker Premium Bose audio system
  • Voice recognition
  • Bluetooth wireless technology, Hands-free phone, and audio streaming
  • 6-USB charging outlets
  • 4.2-inch trip computer display
  • Interior and Map Lighting, Bulb Type
  • Optional wireless charging
  • Optional 12.3-inch Supervision Meter Cluster LCD Display
  • Optional heated and ventilated front seats

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2022 Kia Carnival claims a “Bold multi-purpose design” with a boxy side stance outlook. With an intent to capitalize on the hot-selling Telluride which gets a similar aggressive exterior styling, the 2022 Carnival also gets the signature Tiger-nose grille, sleek headlamps, large wheels with flared wheel arches, and a dash of flair with the L-shaped metalwork that stretches upward from the beltline toward the roof, just aft of the sliding doors. From the front, the 2022 Carnival closely resembles the Sorento, but the chrome grille looks more premium

2022 Kia Carnival Front View

The 2022 Kia Carnival will also fix the recently redesigned “Kia” logo embossed in the middle. The headlights and the stylish LED DRLs boast much smarter and urban aesthetics. The rear section showcases connected LED tail lights running from side to side.

All the above minivans are designed to attract eyes, but it's just the Kia Carnival that uses an SUV design to mimic the rugged look. Dimension-wise, the Toyota Sienna is the shortest and should be the easiest to maneuver, though other rivals aren’t too massive as compared to the former. The Carnival also boasts an apt ground clearance to tackle slightly rougher pavements as well. Some standout features relating to the exteriors of the 2022 Kia Carnival are:

  • C-pillar silver paint garnish
  • Multi-Reflector LED Headlights
  • 17-inch Alloy Wheels, Clear Silver Painted
  • Rear spoiler
  • Optional 19-inch alloys wheels, Gloss Black

Safety
6.0/10

The 2022 Kia Carnival is yet to be tested by the testing agencies, but considering the great performance of the 2021 Sedona in both the NHTSA and IIHS crash tests should be a precursor to the excellence of the Carnival in terms of safety. Also, the Carnival is set to be launched with all the safety features and driver aids that Kia has to offer, making it one of the safest of the segment. A highlight of the most prominent safety features is mentioned below:

  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • UVO eServices Emergency Sos
  • Parking Distance Warning
Competition

Kia Carnival vs. Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica is one of the top-rated minivans and it shares a lot of merits with the new Carnival model. The Pacifica also has a premium interior with ample space for both passengers and cargo both. However, the Chrysler's Stow ‘n Go second-row seats have somewhat restricted the versatility of the cargo, unlike Carnival. Another plus point of the Pacifica is its larger infotainment display.

On the other hand, the Carnival scores better in interior comfort, thanks to well-cushioned seats in all three rows. Kia is also credited for equipping Carnival with a more potent V6 engine, with class-leading ratings in the segment. There's a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid with 32 miles of all-electric range, while Carnival currently does not have a hybrid model.

Kia Carnival vs. Honda Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey has a strong reputation in the minivan segment for its spirited engine delivery, upscale interior, and a long list of standard features. However, with the arrival of the 2022 Carnival, Kia has questioned its supremacy, especially in terms of standard features and technology.

Though the Honda has more cargo space than the Kia, both these minivans are two well-rounded options with an identical starting price.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Kia Carnival minivan is a stunning minivan with premium chrome accents to reflect high-class attire. Inside the Carnival, the relaxing and spacious cabins can seat a big crowd. One can also appreciate the design, supporting seats, and various tech bits that are quite interesting. In terms of performance, the Kia Carnival ranks at the top, and the price tag is also quite competitive. Although the Carnival falls short in the efficiency front, especially against the Toyota Sienna, it very much makes up for it by offering a plethora of unique features alongside a stunning design.
