You can have a spacious third row, immense cargo capacity, and the feasibility to have a luxurious cabin with reclining seats. Among these, the 2022 Kia Carnival is a fresh, elegant minivan that used to be called the “Sedona” in the States. There are many tweaks and improvements in the 2022 Carnival like redesigned Kia logo and a slew of features.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

With an intent to capitalize on the hot-selling Telluride which gets a similar aggressive exterior styling, the 2022 Carnival also gets the signature Tiger-nose grille, sleek headlamps, large wheels with flared wheel arches, and a dash of flair with the L-shaped metalwork that stretches upward from the beltline toward the roof, just aft of the sliding doors. The cabin is loaded with technology and creature comforts and hence should make a solid impression in the segment against the crowd favorites of the segment.

2022 Kia Carnival Features

Similar to the Kia methodology that we have come to see in recent years, the Carnival is offered with plenty of features as standard to make it the most exciting prospect of the segment. As we go up the trim ladder, the convenience features and creature comforts increase, increasing the price of the trims as well. The biggest advantage is the standardization of most of the safety features.

The base LX trim is offered with a plethora of features but it is better to opt for the higher EX trim that adds a lot more features and creature comforts that makes life more luxurious inside the Carnival at a considerable price hike over the base trim.

2022 Kia Carnival Engine and Performance

If you are considering the 2022 Kia Carnival, you’ll be propelled by a 3.5L Regular V6 that cranks out 290-hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. With Toyota Sienna getting done with its V6, the Carnival is now the most powerful minivan in the segment by upping the performance of the Sedona marginally. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission to add convenience to the already calm driving of the Carnival.

The hefty Carnival can do a 0-60 mph sprint in just 7.1 seconds. Though this won’t transform the 2022 Carnival into a track weapon but rather ensures easy overtaking on highways without the engine feeling strained. Besides that, the Kia Carnival is brawny and muscular enough to tow up to 3,500 lbs in addition to its 4,400-plus lbs curb weight.

The Kia Carnival remains an FWD-only minivan, but since the 2022 Toyota Sienna dropped the 3.5L V6, the Carnival now offers the best power figures. Though for the buyers that have just turned into nature-preservers, the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica also offer a hybrid powertrain. The Honda Odyssey offers the highest engine output and is also the most affordable in the segment but yet does not have the performance to match that.

How does the 2022 Kia Carnival Minivan Handle?

The 2022 Kia Carnival is a minivan, after all, so don’t expect descriptions like “blistering quick” or “agile” or even “engaging” for that matter. The Carnival offers a relaxing drive, commanding seating position, and great visibility. But being large, you would be dependent on the driver assistance features to maneuver it through tight spots.

2022 Kia Carnival Minivan driving view

The steering is light, the acceleration is apt, but not the quickest, although, quite impressive for a minivan. If you are looking for something exciting and sporty, then the Toyota Sienna might be your thing. In terms of road noise and insulation, the Carnival is impressive. The ride quality is relaxing, with no violent vibrations to ruin your peace. It's everything you'd expect from a minivan.

2022 Kia Carnival Fuel Economy

The 2022 Kia Carnival fits a new 3.5L V6 under the hood that offers best-in-segment power figures alongside some decent MPG figures. One can expect around 22-mpg of combined mileage. The 2022 Carnival now fits a 19-gallon fuel tank that offers 418-miles of total range in a full tank. These figures show a significant bump over the current-gen Kia Carnival.

With a more muscular engine, the 2022 Kia Carnival is down on economy as compared to the likes of Honda Odyssey and Chrysler, but the margin isn’t huge. If you are looking for the best economy in the segment, the Toyota Sienna is the star of the show with significantly higher figures than the rivals, thanks to the smaller engine and hybrid technology.

2022 Kia Carnival Interior

Recently, the minivans have shown quite a bit of prowess when it comes to interiors, and the same is the case with the 2022 Kia Carnival. From being a comfortable family minivan to a stripped cargo hauler to a luxurious cabin with reclining seats, the sky's the limit. The lower trims can accommodate eight passengers, but the second-row captain chairs reduce this count to seven. But with the same upgrade, the second seat occupants get sliding and reclining seats.

Moreover, the third-row has enough room to fit three adults, but since the ground is slightly high, and thigh support is not too great, they would start to feel uncomfortable. The base trim comes with nominal cloth seats, but as you upgrade to upper trims you get faux leather, eventually, you get to real soft leather in the topmost trims. Moreover, there are soft-touch materials with brilliant dashboard design and metallic inlays with hexagonal patterns in premium trims.

In terms of seating space, the front seat offers impressive headroom and legroom. They feature the convenience of power adjustability and other luxury offerings like heating and ventilation functions according to the trim. The second-row seats are easy to reach with the sliding doors. But it’s the third seat that will require a slight effort. If you configure the Carnival with the conventional 3-seat second row, they can slide and tilt to make a channel to the third seats. While the second-row captain chairs can slide sideways too, making more room to access the third row.

The word ‘minivan’ is synonymous with comfort, practicality, and spaciousness, and all these rivals stand true to these claims. Each of them is spacious and can take the form of a luxurious cabin in their top-spec. Though buyers will find the Kia Carnival and Honda Odyssey more spacious in the third row. The interior highlights of the 2022 Kia Carnival include:

  • Power Sliding Rear Doors
  • Smart Key w/ Push Button & Remote Start
  • Rear Park Distance Warning - Reverse Sensors
  • 7 USB Ports (6 Charging, 1 Media)
  • Rear passenger air-conditioning
  • Sliding and removable 2nd-row seats

2022 Kia Carnival Minivan: Infotainment and Connectivity

It’s not just the relaxing cabin, but the 2022 Kia Carnival also boasts advanced tech-laden features too. The dash houses an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, but we’d advise fitting a dual 12.3-inch display that is spread across 2/3 of the Carnival’s dash. Pick any of these and you’ll have the latest UVO infotainment interface. The interface is quite intuitive and the sharp graphic display makes it effortless to access the menus.

The Carnival can also equip Rear Passenger View & Talk feature that allows the front driver and passenger to communicate with the third-row passenger(s). It includes a camera mounted on the roof that displays the view of the space behind the front seats on the infotainment display. Kia even added a one-button smart open-and-close for the rear power-sliding doors and tailgate, making the 2022 van more practical. The system is also equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Various quirky features include:

  • Optional Rear seat entertainment system
  • 12-speaker Premium Bose audio system
  • Voice recognition
  • Bluetooth wireless technology, Hands-free phone, and audio streaming
  • 6-USB charging outlets
  • 4.2-inch trip computer display
  • Interior and Map Lighting, Bulb Type
  • Optional wireless charging
  • Optional 12.3-inch Supervision Meter Cluster LCD Display
  • Optional heated and ventilated front seats

2022 Kia Carnival Exterior

The 2022 Kia Carnival claims a “Bold multi-purpose design” with a boxy side stance outlook. The Carnival resembles a rugged SUV from the side unless the reversed handle on the sliding doors captures the eyes to distinguish it as a minivan. From the front, the 2022 Carnival closely resembles the Sorento, but the chrome grille looks more premium.

The 2022 Kia Carnival will also fix the recently redesigned “Kia” logo embossed in the middle. The headlights and the stylish LED DRLs boast much smarter and urban aesthetics. The rear section showcases connected LED tail lights running from side to side.

Ground Clearance

All the above minivans are designed to attract eyes, but it's just the Kia Carnival that uses an SUV design to mimic the rugged look. Dimension-wise, the Toyota Sienna is the shortest and should be the easiest to maneuver, though other rivals aren’t too massive as compared to the former. The Carnival also boasts an apt ground clearance to tackle slightly rougher pavements as well. Some standout features relating to the exteriors of the 2022 Kia Carnival are:

  • C-pillar silver paint garnish
  • Multi-Reflector LED Headlights
  • 17-inch Alloy Wheels, Clear Silver Painted
  • Rear spoiler
  • Optional 19-inch alloys wheels, Gloss Black

2022 Kia Carnival Safety

The 2022 Kia Carnival is yet to be tested by the testing agencies, but considering the great performance of the 2021 Sedona in both the NHTSA and IIHS crash tests should be a precursor to the excellence of the Carnival in terms of safety. Also, the Carnival is set to be launched with all the safety features and driver aids that Kia has to offer, making it one of the safest of the segment. A highlight of the most prominent safety features is mentioned below:

  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • UVO eServices Emergency Sos
  • Parking Distance Warning

2022 Kia Carnival Final Verdict

The 2022 Kia Carnival minivan is a stunning minivan with premium chrome accents to reflect high-class attire. Inside the Carnival, the relaxing and spacious cabins can seat a big crowd. One can also appreciate the design, supporting seats, and various tech bits that are quite interesting. In terms of performance, the Kia Carnival ranks at the top, and the price tag is also quite competitive. Although the Carnival falls short in the efficiency front, especially against the Toyota Sienna, it very much makes up for it by offering a plethora of unique features alongside a stunning design.
