The Carnival replaces the old Sedona as Kia’s brand-new minivan. Well, not only does it get a new name, but it is completely redesigned from the ground up. With a longer hood and sculpted exterior, it looks pretty attractive. However, the minivan is still powered by the old V6 mill with 290 hp on tap. This powertrain is pretty well refined and it also offers a comfortable ride.

Along with these amenities, the 2022 Carnival also gets the new Kia Drive Wise safety package, which turns this minivan into a safe haven. Sounds pretty convincing, but how does it stack up against the others? The 2022 Kia Carnival starts off with a price tag of $33,555 and it competes against the likes of Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica.

Kia is known for packing plenty of standard driver assistance tech at a pretty affordable price tag. With that being said, the 2022 Carnival uses a high-strength steel structure which is pretty solid and sound. For 2022, Kia also included more safety features to its standard list to give tough competition to the likes of Japanese and American rivals. Kia Drive Wise safety package is included as standard in the minivan. It includes features such as Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, Automatic emergency braking, Driver drowsiness monitoring, Lane departure warning, Lane keep assist, Vehicle exit warning, and Rear cross traffic alert; but that’s not all.

When you upgrade to higher trims, you also unlock surround-view monitor, blind spot view monitor, forward collision avoidance-assist with cyclist detection and junction turning, highway driving assist, front parking distance warning, reverse parking collision avoidance and navigation-based smart cruise control. Apart from these you also get all the basic safety features which include Vehicle Stability Management, UVO eServices Emergence SOS, TPMS, hill start assist, and airbags. Speaking of airbags, you get full-length curtain airbags, knee airbags for the driver, seat-mounted side airbags and more. It is safe to say that the Carnival comes stacked with safety features that you could ask for at this price. It is quite impressive.

The safety feature list is pretty huge and the highlights include:

  • Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist (FCA) w/ Cyclist Detection and Junction Turning
  • Driver Attention Warning (DAW) w/ Leading Vehicle Departure Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
  • Lane Following Assist (LFA)
  • Surround View Monitor (SVM)
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) w/ Parallel Exit Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision- Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
  • Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA-R)
  • Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop and Go (SCC w/ S&G)
  • Highway Driving Assist (HDA)
  • Safe Exit Assist (SEA)
  • Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)

2022 Kia Carnival Safety Features

The 2022 Kia Carnival comes with a host of driver assistance features, as we have already mentioned. Most of these features help in avoiding the crash altogether, rather than being effective during the crash. As you know, prevention is better than cure. Nonetheless, let's take a look at some of the most intriguing features found in the Carnival –

  • Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist (FCA) w/ Cyclist Detection and Junction Turning – The vehicle comes equipped with a front camera and radar which continuously monitors the vehicle movement in the front. If the system detects an imminent collision, it warns the driver of the situation and helps in braking to avoid the collision. The top SX Prestige trim also gets a more refined system with cyclist detection and junction turning assist.
  • Blind Spot View Monitor – With this feature, you get a live feed of your van’s blind spots directly on the instrument cluster. It is activated when you activate your turn signals. It provides a much safer lane changing experience.
  • Surround View Monitor (SVM) – There are four cameras and plenty of radar sensors onboard which continuously monitors the surroundings, stitches the views providing a virtual bird’s eye view for ease of parking in tight spots.
  • Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop and Go (SCC w/ S&G) – It works just like a regular cruise control system, where you can cruise at a specific speed, without any interference from the driver. It helps maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you, and it can also bring you to a stop in traffic. However, it also uses a GPS navigation system to change speed limits accordingly, detect curves and keep you at a safe distance from the traffic.
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision- Avoidance Assist (RCCA) – This comes in handy when you are getting out of your parking spot. When you are reversing, if there is any obstacle or if any collision is imminent, the system can alert the driver or it can also intervene to brake itself to stop the collision from occurring in the first place.
  • Highway Driving Assistance – This system builds up on the Smart Cruise Control and makes use of the sensors and cameras in the van to help navigate the highway. It can adapt to speed limits, accelerate, decelerate and keep up-to-date with the traffic, all with little manual intervention from the driver.
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) – It uses camera and radar sensors to identify the lane. If the vehicle deviates from its intended lane, it applies corrective action to steering inputs automatically to help the vehicle maintain lane discipline.

The 2022 Kia Carnival presents us with a very convincing proposition. Not only is it a great all-round vehicle, but it is also very safe. Kia have virtually stacked their new minivan with every modern driver assistance feature that they could find, and the van also gets a durable and high-strength steel cage. The ratings from IIHS sing nothing but praises about it, and although NHTSA has not tested it yet, it would shine in their tests too. The higher trims, in particular, come with lots of new and exciting safety features, all of which contribute to making the 2022 Carnival an extremely safe and convenient ride.
