Overall Rating

The Kia Forte is a very practical choice in the segment and offers a very generous amount of space for all the passengers. It also excels in the interior quality, which feels from a segment above. The 2014 Kia Forte has a lot to offer for the price point, which makes it a very attractive overall package in its category. The Kia Forte competes against the likes of Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Civic.

2014 Kia Forte Features

7.5/10

The 2014 Kia Forte is offered in two different trim levels, namely LX and EX. The feature list is very impressive on even the base trim, but the EX trim gets a better feature list with a more powerful engine. The base trim gets an option of a manual or automatic transmission, while the EX trim comes only with automatic transmission. The standard features include 15-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, height-adjustable driver seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, Bluetooth phone connectivity, 6-speaker sound system, and a CD player. The EX trim adds an adjustable steering wheel, LED running lights, fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome accents, and Kia's UVO voice-activated infotainment system.

We recommend

We recommend going for the fully-loaded EX trim as the base engine comes with an underpowered engine. The EX trim gets a more powerful engine, and it also comes with many features that are rare in the segment. The EX trim justifies a premium of $2,000 over the LX automatic with its impressive features list. You do not need to go for any optional features as it will make the car expensive. The standard features are more than enough for your daily uses.

2014 Kia Forte Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The standard engine that powers the 2014 Kia Forte is a 1.8L naturally aspirated Inline-4 engine. The engine produces 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission while you also get the option for 6-speed automatic transmission. The base engine feels underpowered and is not a great choice for people who want driving pleasure. The powertrain is good enough for the city driving conditions, but you can feel the lack of punch on the freeway.

The EX trim gets a more powerful 2-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This should be the engine of choice if you want a decently powerful engine that doesn’t feel weak in your daily drives. The sedan in its base configuration takes 7.8 seconds for the base engine to reach from 0 to 60 mph and the quarter-mile run takes 16 seconds.

The Ford Focus is powered by the most powerful engine in the competition but is not the best engine in terms of acceleration. The Kia Forte beats all its rivals in terms of outright acceleration, but the top speed is not that good with the Forte. The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are not great in terms of outright acceleration, but they perform well in the top speed department.

2014 Kia Forte Fuel Economy

6.0/10

The 2014 Kia Forte offers a very decent fuel economy. Although the Kia Forte is not the most fuel-efficient compact sedan in its segment, it offers pretty good fuel economy. The Kia Forte manages to deliver 25 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg of combined fuel economy. The Kia Forte comes with a decent 13.2-gallon fuel tank which allows it to offer a maximum highway range of 488 miles on a fuel tank.

The Toyota Corolla offers the best fuel economy in the segment, followed by the Honda Civic. These are also the oldest contenders in the segment and are known for their impressive fuel efficiency. The Ford Focus also offers very impressive fuel economy figures. The Kia Forte comes last in the segment in terms of overall fuel efficiency, but it is not very bad considering the other compact sedans in the segment.

2014 Kia Forte Interior

8.0/10

Kia Forte is a budget compact sedan, and you never expect a great quality cabin in this segment. The Korean sisters Hyundai and Kia have completely changed this concept. The Kia Forte offers a very impressive cabin that looks very premium. The interior looks from a segment above. The front row offers very comfortable seating for the driver and the co-passenger. The cabin controls are very easy to use without any nonsense features. The ergonomics is also well taken care of, and everything falls within the reach of the driver.

The rear seats also offer impressive space for the passengers. For the best comfort, you should accommodate only two passengers in the back, but you can also accommodate five passengers without much issue. The materials used inside the cabin are of good quality. There is the use of plastic, but it is not cheap plastic. The sedan offers a class-leading cargo capacity of 14.9 cubic feet, making it the most practical option in the competition.

  • Upscale interior compared to all rivals
  • Cruise Control
  • Tilt And Telescopic Steering Wheel
  • Remote Trunk Release
  • Single Zone Front Air Conditioning
  • Dual Illuminating Vanity Mirrors

How good is the 2014 Kia Forte’s infotainment system?

The 2021 Kia Forte gets a 4.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It gets Kia’s UVO voice-activated system, which is far superior to some of the other rivals in the segment. The infotainment feels very responsive and intuitive in overall operations. The graphics are also of very good quality, and there is no delay in the touch response. It also gets Bluetooth phone connectivity which works seamlessly. The infotainment also gets USB connectivity, AM/FM radio, element antenna, and Satellite radio. The audio is managed via a 6-speaker audio system which does a good job for the price. The infotainment features include:

  • 4.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • AM/FM radio

  • Satellite radio
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity
  • 6-speaker audio system

2014 Kia Forte Exterior

9.0/10

The 2014 Kia Forte is completely redesigned this year, and the changes on the exterior are very evident. Kia Forte is one of the best-looking compact sedans in the segment, and it has gone through only positive changes. The 2014 Kia Forte comes with a distinctive front grille and the headlights also look great and goes all the way into the front fenders. The side also looks very impressive and gets 15-inch steel wheels as standard. You can also get the bigger 16-inch alloy wheels with the upper EX trim. The rear design follows the same sharper styling, and the taillights are sleek and long, going all the way to the tailgates.

The 2014 Toyota Corolla is the longest sedan in the segment, but the wheelbase remains the same as the Kia Forte at 106.3 inches. The Ford Focus is the heaviest of them all and has the smallest wheelbase in the competition. The Honda Civic also has a smaller wheelbase compared to the Forte and Corolla. The standout exterior features include:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Chrome accents
  • Power and heated mirrors
  • Remote keyless power door locks
  • Chrome exhaust tips

2014 Kia Forte Safety

9.0/10

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the Kia Forte an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars in their crash test rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also found it 'Good' in most of their crash test ratings. It only scored ‘Poor’ in the front-overlap crash test. The 2014 Kia Forte packs a very good list of safety features, however, the competition offers better safety ratings, and this is one area where the Kia Forte lacks. The safety features include:

  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
  • Stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Traction Control
  • Emergency Braking Assist

2014 Kia Forte Final Verdict

The 2014 Kia Forte has completely redefined the budget compact sedan segment with the features that it offers at the price. Even the base Forte packs a really impressive cabin with soft-touch materials inside the cabin to give it a premium look. The engines are also powerful enough to give you a comfortable drive in normal driving conditions. The Kia Forte doesn’t offer the same level of reliability as the Japanese rivals like the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla. Still, it offers a great package for the price, and you can consider the Kia Forte if you are looking for an affordable compact sedan.
