There is a lot that has changed in terms of the overall styling and the dimensions of the 2014 Kia Forte. Now it is even bigger, wider, and a whole lot of changes are evident in the overall design language. The Forte has made the budget compact car market very competitive with the list of features that it offers at an MSRP starting at $16,700. The 2014 Kia Forte comes with two different engine options offered separately in two trim levels

2014 Kia Forte for Sale

Kia offers both finance and lease options for the buyers with APR starting as low as 4.44%. The monthly payment starts at $326 for a duration of 60 months. Lease deals begin at $520/month for a 36-month tenure and an annual mileage of 12,000 miles.

2014 Kia Forte Buying Advice

The Kia Forte has received a complete redesign this year after its last overhaul back in 2010. With plenty more features, the latest technology, and the option to choose between powertrains and transmissions, the 2014 Forte is one of the best compact sedans available for sale today.

It competes in the heavily competitive segment against the likes of the sporty Ford Focus sedan, the frugal Toyota Corolla, and the crowd's favorite Honda Civic. While Ford does offer great value on the basis of its performance, the Corolla and Civic are priced higher, while the Kia Forte offers a well-balanced package without much compromise.

Have zero complaints

Pros - Affordable, Spacious, Reliable, Stylish.

Cons - None for me.

Happy deal I really cant find myself complaining about my Forte as this car really offers a lot for the $6,300 that I paid for the car. This car sure doesn't come packed with a lot of features but the infotainment feels very easy to use and the cabin offers enough space for an average family. The Forte looks fresh and the trunk can accommodate a lot of cargo making this an affordable yet family f...

Good car

Pros - Handling, easy to drive, visibility

Cons - Legroom, rear-seat comfort

Kia is better than I imagined We bought our Forte with some trepidation because of what we had heard about Kia in the past. However, everyone was commenting on how they had changed, and wow were they true; this has been the best value in every way, and I heartily suggest it. This experience I had with these guys is the smoothest I've ever had when it comes to purchasing a car.

Underpowered and spacious compact sedan

Pros - Spacious, many features, easy to use controls and good on gas.

Cons - Unrefined ride quality and moderate acceleration.

Sedan with unrefined ride and moderate acceleration. We purchased the 2014 Kia Forte used from a reputable dealership. My husband and I appreciated it due to its low price, numerous features, and sporty appearance. It took a while for us to understand how underpowered this car is. The four-cylinder engine is painfully sluggish, and it sounds and feels buzzy when pushed hard. On rougher roads, the...

7.5

Overall Rating

The 2014 Kia Forte is a very practical choice in the segment and offers a very generous amount of space for all the passengers and their luggage. It also excels in the interior quality, which feels from a segment above. The standard list of features has grown over the last model year and there is more safety and technology as well. The Kia Forte has a lot to offer for the price point, which makes it a very attractive overall package in its category.

Kia offers an exhaustive warranty program of up to 10-years and it also does not take much to maintain the compact sedan in its prime condition either. The 5-year cost of ownership value for the 2014 Forte is around the $29,510 mark, which is on par with the segment standards. That said, the 78/100 reliability rating from J.D. Power is amongst the lowest in the business with the Corolla and 2014 Civic leading the pack with a rating of 85 and 83 respectively.

Buying Advice

We recommend going for the fully-loaded EX trim as the base engine comes with an underpowered engine. The EX trim gets a more powerful engine, and it also comes with many features that are rare in the segment. The EX trim justifies a premium of $2,000 over the LX automatic with its impressive features list. You do not need to go for any optional features as it will make the car expensive.

Features

8.0/10

The 2014 Kia Forte is offered in two different trim levels, namely LX and EX. The feature list is very impressive on even the base trim, but the EX trim gets a better feature list with a more powerful engine. The base trim gets an option of a manual or automatic transmission, while the EX trim with the larger 2L engine is paired up only with the automatic transmission. The standard features include 15-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, height-adjustable driver seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, Bluetooth phone connectivity, 6-speaker sound system, and a CD player.

The EX trim adds an adjustable steering wheel, LED running lights, fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome accents, and Kia's UVO voice-activated infotainment system. The base LX trim with automatic transmission gets the optional Popular package for $900 and adds 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, upgraded interior trim, 2 additional speakers, cruise control, sliding center console armrest & rear-seat armrest, and mirror-mounted turn indicators.

The EX trim on the other hand gets a sunroof, keyless ignition, heated steering wheel, heated front & rear seats, power ventilated driver seat, and an auto-dimming mirror with the $2,600 Premium package. The $2,300 Technology package on the other hand adds Xenon headlights, LED taillights, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, and a navigation system. The 17-inch alloy wheels remain a standalone option for the EX trim.

Engine and Performance

7.6/10

The standard engine that powers the 2014 Kia Forte is a 1.8L naturally aspirated Inline-4 engine. The engine produces 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission while you also get the option for 6-speed automatic transmission. The base engine feels underpowered and is not a great choice for people who want driving pleasure. The powertrain is good enough for the city driving conditions, but you can feel the lack of punch on the freeway.

The EX trim gets a more powerful 2-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This should be the engine of choice if you want a decently powerful engine that doesn’t feel weak in your daily drives. That said, this engine feels coarse under hard acceleration and the 1.6L turbo-4 engine is only available with the hatchback and coupe models. The ride quality is also a bit on the stiffer side and the Forte tends to toss you around on bumpy roads.

The sedan impresses with its handling with precise steering inputs, and the higher EX model also gets 3 modes to alter the feel of the steering wheel. In its base configuration, the 2014 Forte takes 8.6 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 MPH and the quarter-mile run takes 16.9 seconds. Opting for the larger engine will bring down the 0-60 MPH timing to 8.1 seconds and covers the quarter-mile in 16.4 seconds. The top speed is limited to 112 MPH for both the powertrain models.

The Ford Focus is powered by the most powerful engine in the competition and hence is also the quickest one here. While the Corolla manages to be marginally quicker than the Kia Forte, the Honda Civic is the slowest of the lot. The 2014 Civic is also the most expensive one in the segment, and while both Toyota and Ford are priced aggressively, it can match up to the value for money offering from Kia.

Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The 2014 Kia Forte offers decent fuel economy figures with the base engine, but the larger engine sees a drop in the MPG ratings. The Kia Forte manages to deliver 25 MPG in the city, 37 MPG on the highway, and 29 mpg of combined fuel economy, and the 13.2-gallon fuel tank offers a decent range of about 409 miles combined.

The 2014 Forte gets the same gas tank capacity with the larger 2L engine but gets an EPA rating of 24/36/28 MPG in city/highway/combined conditions. This brings the range down to just below the 400 miles combined mark, which still is on par with what the rivals have to offer.

The Toyota Corolla offers the best fuel economy in the segment, which is closely followed by the Honda Civic. These are also the oldest contenders in the segment and are known for their impressive fuel efficiency. The Ford Focus also offers very impressive fuel economy figures while the Kia Forte comes last in the segment in terms of overall fuel efficiency. The Honda and Toyota also offer the best driving range while the smaller gas tank capacity of the Focus limits it range.

Interior

7.5/10

The 2014 Kia Forte is a budget compact sedan, and you never expect a great quality cabin in this segment. The Korean sisters Hyundai and Kia have completely changed this concept. The Kia Forte offers a very impressive cabin that looks very premium. The interior looks from a segment above. The front row offers very comfortable seating for the driver and the co-passenger. The cabin controls are very easy to use without any nonsense features. The ergonomics is also well taken care of, and everything falls within the reach of the driver.

The rear seats also offer impressive space for the passengers and buyers get 4 interior upholstery color options to choose from. For the best comfort, you should accommodate only two passengers in the back, but you can also accommodate five passengers without much issue. The materials used inside the cabin are of good quality. There is the use of plastic, but it does not feel cheap by any means. The sedan offers a class-leading cargo capacity of 14.9 cubic feet, making it the most practical option in the competition.

The 2014 Kia Forte offers very impressive space inside the cabin. The quality of the cabin is better than all the other rivals in the competition. The Toyota Corolla beats all the competitors in terms of the overall cabin space. The Honda Civic also offers good space in its cabin but loses out in terms of trunk space on offer. However, the Kia Forte beats all the rivals in terms of cargo capacity. The Kia 2014 Forte also gets a 4.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system at the center of the dash.

It gets Kia’s UVO voice-activated system, which is far superior to some of the other rivals in the segment. The infotainment feels very responsive and intuitive in overall operations. The graphics are also of very good quality, and there is no delay in the touch response. It also gets Bluetooth phone connectivity which works seamlessly. The infotainment also gets USB connectivity, AM/FM radio, element antenna, and Satellite radio. The audio is managed via a 6-speaker audio system which does a good job for the price. The interior features include:

  • Tilt And Telescopic Steering Wheel
  • Remote Trunk Release
  • Single Zone Front Air Conditioning
  • 4.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • AM/FM radio & Satellite radio
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity
  • 6-speaker audio system

Exterior

7.5/10

The 2014 Kia Forte is completely redesigned this year, and the changes on the exterior are very evident. Kia Forte is one of the best-looking compact sedans in the segment, and it has gone through only positive changes. The 2014 Kia Forte comes with a distinctive front grille and the headlights also look great and goes all the way into the front fenders.

The side also looks very impressive and gets 15-inch steel wheels as standard. You can also get the bigger 16-inch alloy wheels with the upper EX trim. The rear design follows the same sharper styling, and the taillights are sleek and long, going all the way to the tailgates. Kia offers the 2014 Forte in 7 paint color options and it looks more striking than even in this current guise.

The 2014 Toyota Corolla is the longest sedan in the segment and yet keeps its weight in check. The Civic and Forte are very similar in size and curb weight while the Focus is marginally shorter while being the widest. The Focus also rides the lowest while others get the same 5.5-inch of ground clearance. In this comparison, it the Forte that looks the most sophisticated and will attract most attention on the streets. The standout exterior features include:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Chrome accents
  • Power and heated mirrors
  • Remote keyless power door locks
  • Chrome exhaust tips

Safety

7.0/10

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the 2014 Kia Forte an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars in their crash test rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also found it 'Good' in most of their crash test ratings. It only scored ‘Poor’ in the front-overlap crash test.

That said, the 2013 model year Kia Forte secured the "Top Safety Pick" accolade, so this is not a particularly positive step in the right direction. The Kia 2014 Forte packs a very good list of safety features, however, the competition offers better safety ratings, and this is one area where the Kia Forte lacks. The safety features include:

  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
  • Stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Traction Control
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Backup camera
  • Low tire pressure warning

Competition

2014 Kia Forte vs 2014 Ford Focus

Although the Focus is quicker off the mark, the Kia Forte EX with the larger engine is almost as quick as the Focus sedan. That said, Focus is more frugal and offers better ride and handling. The Forte on the other hand offers more passenger and trunk space with more standard interior creature comforts as compared to Ford. Therefore it depends on personal preferences, and we think the Ford Focus would suit more to the average American buyer.

2014 Ford Focus

2014 Kia Forte vs 2014 Toyota Corolla

Both the Corolla and Forte offer similar acceleration performance, but the Corolla is about a grand pricier. That additional price feels worth every penny with the higher MPG ratings and better safety ratings that Toyota has to offer. The 2014 Corolla also has a far more spacious rear seat, almost on par with midsize sedans, and also has better reliability & higher resale value in the market. Therefore, unless you have a very tight budget, the Toyota Corolla seems the smarter choice here.

2014 Toyota Corolla

2014 Kia Forte vs 2014 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic has a much higher price tag as compared to all its rivals, and yet it is one of the slowest of the lot. The impressive frugality, the reliability, and the high resale value all work in the favor of Honda, but the Kia sedan offers more value for money with more creature comforts and technology at a much lower MSRP. The larger trunk also adds to the practicality of the Kia Forte, making it our preferred choice in this comparison.

2014 Honda Civic

Final Verdict

The 2014 Kia Forte has completely redefined the budget compact sedan segment with the features that it offers at the price. Even the base Forte packs a really impressive cabin with soft-touch materials inside the cabin to give it a premium look. The engines are also powerful enough to give you a comfortable drive in normal driving conditions. Although the 2014 Forte doesn’t offer the same level of reliability as the Japanese rivals, it still offers a great value for the price.
