Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Moreover, it offers a plethora of advanced standard and optional features and a clever host of safety features. On the downside, it offers dismal cargo space than some other rivals in its segment and lackluster engine performance. Also, it doesn’t come with an all-wheel-drive option which is a letdown. However, Kia has taken a refreshing approach to this car, resulting in a cool and desirable car to the segment. Despite being a well-packed car, it gets tight competition from other popular automakers. It rivals the likes of other commendable cars like the Toyota Prius Prime, Hyundai Ioniq hybrid, and Subaru CrossTrek Hybrid.

2022 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid SUV Features

The 2022 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid comes in four trims namely, LXS, EX, and EX Premium. There aren’t many changes in the features list but some features are expected to be added for 2022 as it might get a completely revamped interior. The price of the 2022 Ioniq Hybrid is expected to start from $30,000 for the base LXS trim and go up to $37,000 for the top-tier EX Premium trim. Also, the mid-EX trim is expected to be priced around $34,000 which is a great bargain for its price.

As standard, you get Dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and ignition with remote start, 8-inch touchscreen, 6-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto smartphone integration, Lane-keeping assist, and so on. Going up the trim ladder, you will get additional features like a Power-adjustable driver's seat, leather seats with cloth inserts, Heated front seats, wireless phone charger, Adaptive cruise control, and Lane-keeping system. However, the top trim oozes you with luxury features such as a Sunroof, Heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an integrated navigation system, and a 10.25-inch touch screen display. Now, let’s have a look at the important features that come in all the trim in the table below.

Which Trim Should You Buy?

We recommend you to go for the mid-EX trim considering the extensive list of features it offers for the price. It is only $3000 more than the base LXS trim but gets you more creature comforts like an Eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, wireless charging pad, Ten-way adjustable power driver’s seat with heating, and some more. However, if you want more opulence and luxury, opting for the top trim would be the right choice as it offers a large 10.25-inch touchscreen, power sunroof, LED headlights, etc. The top trim also doesn’t seem so expensive with regards to the base trim and regardless of the trims, it offers the same powertrain. Moreover, it only comes with FWD in all the trims.

The 2022 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid is expected to arrive at the dealerships by late 2021.

2022 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid is packed by a 1.6L inline 4 cylinder engine producing 104 horsepower and 109 lb-ft torque. This inline-4 engine is paired with a 43 horsepower (32-kW) electric motor with a 1.56 kWh lithium-polymer battery which weighs 33kg. The electric motor, on the other hand, is capable of adding 125 lb.-ft to the overall power output, resulting in a combined output of 139 hp @5700 rpm and 195 lb-ft of torque at 4000 pm. Sadly, All the power is delivered to only front wheels and there is no all-wheel-drive option in any of the trims. Moreover, the engine is mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that works seamlessly to offer better gear ratios.

2022 Kia Niro plug-in-hybrid SUV Rear Driving View

As usual, the engine is very refined and quiet which is one of the advantages of buying a Kia. Moving on to the performance figures, the 2022 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid can easily accelerate from 0-60 in 9.0 seconds and does a quarter-mile in 17 seconds, and maxes out at 125 mph which happens to be the highest in the segment. Moreover, when it comes to driving dynamics, it seems to be pretty frolic to drive but not the best in the segment. The 6-speed DCT used in this car offers better upshifts and downshifts than the CVT that you would find in some of its rivals.

Comparing the competition, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid beats its competition in the 0-60 at 8.3 seconds and quarter-mile run as well due to its power advantage when compared to its rivals. It puts out 152 hp @ 6000 rpm and 145 ft-lbs. @ 4000 rpm. The Toyota Prius Prime, on the other hand, is the slowest in its segment and hits 0-60 MPH in 9.8 seconds. This is certainly due to the underpowered engine it has on offer which produces 121 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque.

The Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid is the exception here as it is sold as a crossover but looks more like a hatchback. As we all know, Kia is the subsidiary of Hyundai. As a result, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid comes with the same powertrain you get in the Kia but with less torque. Also, the Hyundai Ioniq is faster than the Kia in the acceleration test but falls short in terms of top speed which is only 110 mph.

2022 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

The Compact plug-in hybrid cars are very well known for their fuel efficiency and the Kia Niro plug-in hybrid really lives up to its expectations and offers good fuel economy if not the best. It provides 48 mpge in the city, 44 mpge on the highway, and a combined 46 mpge. The fuel economy is definitely one of the best parts about the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid which skyrocketed the sales of the Hybrid Niro. Moreover, it comes fitted with an 11.4-gallon fuel tank and 1.56 kWh battery-powered hybrid power unit which offers a driving range of 547 miles in the city, 502 miles while cruising down the highway, and 524 miles when combined. Being one of the lightest cars adds to the fuel efficiency of the car.

Despite having a huge 13.2-gallon tank, it gets smashed by all its rivals in terms of range. The Kia Niro Hybrid offers a mediocre fuel economy when compared to its counterparts. Despite having the same engine, the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid edges over the Kia Niro in terms of mileage and range as well.

2022 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid SUV Competition

2022 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid Vs 2022 Toyota Prius Prime:

The Toyota Prius has always been the perfect definition of a perfect eco-friendly and economical hybrid car and it still lives up to its name. For starters, it is the most efficient car in this division which offers a whopping combined 54 mpg.

2022 Toyota Prius Prime

However, this impeccable fuel efficiency reflects in the power delivery, it delivers sluggish acceleration and stays behind the Niro in the performance test. The interior quality offered by Niro also seems to be better than the Prius. Overall, the Prius is the right pick if mileage matters more to you.

2022 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid Vs 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid:

Like every other Subaru, this CrossTrek Hybrid is also a great off-roader. It is also the only vehicle in its class that comes with a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. Apart from that, it also offers incredible performance than the Kia.

2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

Comfort levels are better in the Subaru. As a Crossover SUV, the Subaru CrossTrek ticks more boxes than the Kia Niro but the only part where it disappoints us is, when it comes to the price.

2022 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid Vs 2022 Hyundai Ioniq PHEV:

Both these cars are very similar in terms of everything, the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV is the twin sibling of the Kia. Both these cars share the same underpinnings and engine platform. The electric motor used in both these cars is pretty much the same as well.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq PHEV

What sets the Kia Niro apart is the spacious cabin and an extra grunt in the engine due to the tweak in the power output. In a nutshell, the Ioniq comes as a better option and it is also more affordable.

2022 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The 2022 Kia Niro Hybrid offers everything you would expect from a hybrid vehicle, it offers decent performance, it looks handsome, it drives well, and offers respectable fuel efficiency figures, But on most fronts, it is mediocre only. As a daily driver, It will satisfy your needs with a nice interior and decent driving dynamics. But there are other cars in the segment that surpasses the Kia Niro in terms of driveability, performance, and practicality.
