There are a few vehicles in the market which have both character and appeal in rhyme with each other. The 2015 Kia Optima does manage to book its place in that little area. High on all the aspects that a consumer looks for in his/her first buy, the Optima poses a great challenge to the shares of the established badges like the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and the Mazda 3

Too many to choose from and that too with variation in the powertrain package is indicative of the fact, one can build his/her own fortune as per needs and necessities. The starting price of $22,665 is the bare minimum one has to pay to cherish the experience. Infotainment system and interior features are the fields where the 2015 Optima gets updates, apart from them there are no major updates on this Korean sedan.

2015 Kia Optima Features

9.0/10

The Kia Optima has a myriad of trim options including LX, EX, SX, SX Turbo, and SXL Turbo. The same is akin to the features as well. The base LX is a little bit deficient in almost all the categories in general right from the temperature regulation to seat adjustability. The EX and other higher trims go on to add assets like the Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning and power-adjustability along with leatherette wrapping on different sectors.

But in terms of musical enrichment one can be satiated with the 6-speaker audio unit that can be further upgraded to Infinity Premium Sound System in the SXL Turbo. The engine variant also changes as per trim level as the lower three get the base variant while the top two have a turbo-packed powertrain.

The variation is not just restrained to the engine but the wheels are also different for different ones. The smallest among all is the 16" Alloy Wheels which is reserved for the LX while the EX has been attached to the 17" Alloy Wheels. Finally, the size gets stable with 18” but with a different accent as we move up the hierarchy. Apart from variation, there are a few standard features for handling dynamics which include the names such as the Electronic Stability Control and Driveline Traction Control. But we have to admit that the SXL Turbo just overwhelms others by a huge margin which can be a downside for the overall imagery of this sedan as well.

We Recommend

The most cost-effective in the lineup is the EX trim which allows you to have all the necessities for your comfort and long hauling ease. Right from the automatic conditioning to leather touches, all have been incorporated into it in a balanced proportion. The rest also have such assets except for the LX but cost much higher. The EX is also parallel to others in safety assurance at a much cheaper price. The highest trim is most flashy but is exceptionally expensive and does not fit everyone.

2015 Kia Optima Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2015 Kia Optima has been given the privilege to hold two competent engine options under its hood. One of them is the 2.4L I-4 which produces 192 hp of power @ 6300 rpm and a torque of 181 lb-ft @ 4250 rpm. The other one comes with the ability to churn out 274 hp @ 6000 rpm and 269 lb-ft @ 1650 rpm with a reduced turbocharged capacity of 2 L in the same I-4 configuration. Both packages are coupled with the same 6-Speed Automatic Transmission in the FWD layout. The base setup allows the Kia Optima to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds with a top speed of as much as 152 mph.

Individual virtues remain relevant if it stands firm against the tides of rivalry which does not seem to be the case with the Kia Optima. Despite having the best numbers on paper, the Optima misses translating the same in a real-time scenario. The rivals, on the other hand, are much faster to accelerate for the same speed variation taking a time of nearly 8 seconds on average. But it is not all downside for the former as the Kia is so fast down the lane that the G-Force is real when the throttle is floored to the bottom.

2015 Kia Optima Fuel Economy

6.0/10

Some of the most important aspects of this segment are the fuel economy and the relative range authority. And the Kia Optima comes in the middle of the golden ratio of these domains as it is underappreciated for its returns of 23 mpg in the cities, 34 mpg on the highways, and 27 mpg overall but outshines the rest with an impressive range of more than 610 miles. It is simply its large fuel tank capacity that facilitates it to have that level of practicality. While the numbers may work for now, once the rivals would increase their tank size, the relevancy might disappear.

The best-in-class among all the sedans is the Nissan Altima for its superior combined mileage and range coverage collectively. The ability to mark more than 680 miles on the odometer is only available at the realm of the Nissan badging to date. On the other hand, the Mazda 3 appears to be the most aspiring for the coming days with a combined efficiency of 33 MPG and a little upgrade in its tank will place it miles ahead of others quite easily.

2015 Kia Optima Interior

7.0/10

What if the charm of the outside is as attractive as the interior accents? It would be relieving to the core of one’s heart even if he/she is not inclined towards it. The availability of metallic finishes and the Piano Black steering wheel are some of the indications of privileges that one is destined to relish once entering the Kia Optima Cabin.

Though the lower trims have an accent deficit, the higher trims are at the peak with touches like the Nappa Leatherette on the seats, gear shifter, and door inserts. The craving for power-adjustability has also been taken care of in the SXL turbo trims along with power-heating. The other siblings are quite disappointing but then it is the price tag as well which restrains them to flap their wings.

The Kia Optima offers a balanced cabin space in both rows with a foldable rear seat which can further enhance the cargo volume. Call it coincidence or whatever you may say so, the other cabin arrangements are also parallel in figures including the cargo capacity of 15.4 cu-ft in both the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry. A 5-passenger approach is also generic among these sedans making the virtues equivalent. Thus, it is evident to find yourself in the equilibrium status and none can be given preference over another by any means. Some of the features are:

  • Cruise Control
  • Full Cloth Headliner
  • Fade-To-Off Interior Lighting
  • Telescoping Steering Column
  • Front and Rear Cupholders
  • Cargo Net

How intuitive is the 2015 Kia Optima’s infotainment unit?

The storyline of the infotainment and entertainment package is pretty much the same as that of other categories where the SXL Turbo is surprisingly loaded while the other siblings struggle to keep up with the pace. The SiriusXM satellite radio and a 6-speaker audio unit are the most advanced ones available across trims as a standard but then cometh the SXL Turbo with the Real-Time Traffic Display and Infinity Premium Sound System including 8-speakers and subwoofer on offer to make a starking difference. Thus, it has to be the highest trim for one’s engagement to be relevant with time. Some of the features are:

  • SiriusXM
  • 6 speakers
  • Bluetooth wireless technology
  • Real-Time Traffic Display
  • CD Player
  • MP3 Player

2015 Kia Optima Exterior

8.0/10

The Kia Optima is simply way ahead of its time in terms of its appeal and expression pursuit. The flow and curvature are so in line with each other that there is no sign of abruption at all. The sleek projector-beam headlamps with a dark grille on the front fascia in a chrome background are just exemplary for a sedan of such a low budget.

It certainly looks like an aristocrat in the automotive segment with its 18" Chrome Alloy Wheels and 18" Machined Alloy Wheels for the higher trims. Even the rear is fairly decorated but for the SXL turbo exclusively with a lip spoiler to increase downforce for assisting high-speed maneuvering. In the end, all we can say is that there is hardly any pothole in this design language to mention.

Considering the dimensional box only for inside ease fitting would be to demean the physics underlying the stability around the corner and straight lines. The more streamlined and compact it can be, the more superior it would be in curbing the lateral and longitudinal pushes. The narrative does seem to continue in the same fashion as it was in the interior and that is why all are viable enough to be placed on the same block. Some of the features are:

  • Front Fog Lamps
  • 16" Alloy Wheels
  • Approach Lights
  • Projector-beam headlamps

2015 Kia Optima Safety

9.0/10

The 2015 Kia Optima is moderately armed with assets in order to counter the uncertainties for all the trims except for the topmost. The generic features include the emblem of the Electronic Stability Control and Driveline Traction Control which are pretty underwhelming no matter what. The philosophy is solely driven as per the cost sheet because the moment the same goes above 35 grand in the SXL Turbo.

Tech-assists like the Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Collision Warning, and Rear Parking Sensors are added to the analytics making it a real epitome in every single regard. Though the features might be lacking throughout the trim structure, the impact resilience has been established in the frame as to score an overall 5-star in NHTSA and “Good” rating in many of the aspects of the IIHS. Some of the features are:

  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Collision Warning
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Child Seat Anchors
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2015 Kia Optima Final Verdict

The 2015 Kia Optima is a nice-looking sedan but it lacks way behind in both practicality and performance. The rivals have much higher prospects within competitive price ranges and that too with inspiring additional packages as well. Therefore, it is definitely not the first pick as of now considering others at the same time.
