2019 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Kia is not so old in the hybrid business and it clearly looks forward to having a great future. In order to counter all the myth associated with the hybrid performance, the South Korean major has brought the 2019 Kia Optima Hybrid Sedan that remains cool and dynamic. Just like regular Kia models, the Optima Hybrid comes loaded with hefty standard features.

This year, there are some major additions in the feature list, including dual-zone climate control, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and heated leather seats. Power runs through a combined effort of an electric motor and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. The engine is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial August 16, 2019

Optima's interior offers excellent design and ergonomics. The cabin looks clean with the use of premium material. There's plenty of space for five passengers. Due to slopping roofline, the rear seats could be problematic for tall passengers.

2019 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Features

For this year, there’s only one trim: the EX. It is well-equipped but there’s also an extra Technology package that includes additional features like panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, insulated front glass, adaptive cruise control, and many driver safety aids.

Unlike last year, the carmaker has kept only single trim EX. We loved the addition of extra features into the Technology Package, which is an only package available. The 2019 Kia Optima Hybrid is competitively priced in addition to the features.

2019 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Engine

“The 2019 Kia Optima Hybrid is composed around sharp turns and has plenty of power for merging and passing on the highway. Its hybrid components create a hushed ride, and its regenerative braking system is smooth, which is nice considering some of its rivals' systems are grabby.” – cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

The five-seater midsize Sedan Kia Optima Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine coupled with an electric motor. The engine produces 192 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Some of the prominent competitors like Toyota Camry Hybrid and Honda Accord Hybrid offer better power output than the Optima Hybrid.

Acceleration

The Kia Optima Hybrid takes 7.6 seconds to complete a zero to 60 mph ramp. Meanwhile, Toyota Camry takes 7.2 seconds to complete the same. The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine clubbed with an electric motor runs smoothly with decent acceleration. Though, the figures reveal that the Sedan remains slow than most of its competitors.

Handling and Steering

Since there's no CVT on offer, the 6-speed automatic transmission drives the car with ultimate joy. The steering is very responsive and gets more engaged with the phenomenal suspension system. Optima runs on independent suspension with front MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear. With cushier springs and elastic front bushings, the 2019 Optima rides more smoothly than the predecessor.

All models come with drive-mode selector that can shift between economy and normal modes, while a sport mode is offered on top trims. In eco mode, all the Optima’s turn out to be fuel efficient while in sport mode, the shift speed slightly increase in order to offer better acceleration.

Braking

As far as braking is considered, the Optima Hybrid gets 12 inches brake in the front and 11.2 inches brake in the rear. The stopping distance is 127 feet, which is longest among the rivals.

2019 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Interior

“The Optima's interior, regardless of model or trim, isn't especially exciting visually. That said, it serves its functions well. The feature set makes you feel as if you're getting a lot more for your money, although the quality of materials feels a bit mediocre.” - edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Inside, the 2019 Optima Hybrid is quite similar to the regular Optima model. The cabin design and straightforward and clean. There’s plenty of space for front passengers, but the taller passengers might face problem in rear accommodation due to sloping roofline.

There’s plenty of plastic used within the cabin but somehow it makes the look sturdy and appealing. In comparison to other Sedan in the class, the Optima Sedan stands upmarket.

“While it’s fair to say the Optima hasn’t changed significantly for 2019, it didn’t really need to; this midsize Kia sedan already boasted clean lines and a subtly aggressive stance.” – Kelley Blue Book

2019 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Competition

Kia Optima Hybrid vs. Honda Accord Hybrid

The new Accord has undoubtedly impressed us in terms of design and cabin space. It also returns good fuel economy ratings. At times, the only irritating thing about the Sedan is its powertrain noise, while the brakes can be touchy at high speeds. With a CVT transmission, the Accord Hybrid offers more power than the Optima Hybrid Sedan.

Kia Optima Hybrid vs. Ford Fusion Hybrid

The Ford Fusion Hybrid has got sleek design styling. In comparison to the Kia Optima Hybrid, the Fusion Hybrid seem to be underpowered. However, the infotainment system is responsive and easy to operate. It is also expensive in the higher order of trim.

Kia Optima Hybrid vs. Toyota Camry Hybrid

There’s too much to speak about the 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid. It has got surplus fuel economy in comparison to the Kia Optima Hybrid. The LE version, especially experiences floaty kind of ride quality, which has been taken care of in the higher trim levels.

2019 Kia Optima hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

The Kia Optima Hybrid is a complete bundle of comfort and efficiency. No matter there may be many Sedan in the class that offer better fuel economy than the Optima but the Optima take the space in terms of design and cabin material. The pricing is very attractive for such Sedan. Thanks to the available package, for which you may upgrade your Sedan with latest value added features. If you are still looking for serious alternatives then you shall consider rivals like Honda Accord Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid, and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.
