2017 Kia Rio Hatchback Engine

7.4/10
"Out on the road, the 2017 Kia Rio has a less than smooth ride quality mainly due to the larger wheels and firmer sport-tuned suspension. - Edmunds"

Engine and Transmission

Even though the 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine of the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback has impressive power ratings compared to its class, the 6-speed automatic transmission can be a little over-consuming. During hard acceleration, the engine gets noisy and loud which can be a spoiling factor for the Rio's stable attitude. The acceleration produced by the automatic transmission is not as fast as the one displayed by the rivals with a manual transmission. The up-shifts pretty progressively but the downshifts are slower than you'd expect.

Horsepower 138 hp 174 hp 134 hp 153 hp
Torque 123 lb-ft 167 lb-ft 162 lb-ft 177 lb-ft

Being the cheapest among its rivals, the Kia Rio Hatchback has the least torque of 123 pound-feet and a horsepower of 138, just a little better than the costliest Hardtop 4 Door Cooper which has 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The Chevrolet Cruze is the second costliest and the highest torque of 177 pound-feet and horsepower of 153. And finally, the Honda Civic has the highest horsepower of 174 and second highest torque of 167 pound-feet. While the Kia Rio and the Chevrolet Cruze feature an automatic transmission as standard, the Honda Civic and Cooper come with a manual transmission.

Acceleration

In spite of not having a special engine, the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback provides an adequate performance. When driven in the cities, the engine is relatively active and quiet at the same time but when you take it to the highways, it starts to sound and feel a little constrained.

Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 5.9 5.4 5.5 5.5

Suffering because of its automatic transmission, the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback has the slowest initial acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds. Even in the quarter mile, it fails to compensate and falls behind than the rest, covering the distance in 16.5 seconds. Doing a millisecond better than the Kia Rio, the Chevrolet Cruze reaches o to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds and even manages to do better than the Rio over the quarter mile with a timing of 16 seconds. The Honda Civic is the fastest among the four to reach the 60 mph mark by doing it in 7.5 seconds and even scales the quarter-mile distance with the fastest timing of 15.5 seconds, thanks to its powerful engine. Right behind it is the Hardtop Cooper with a timing of 7.7 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph.

In terms of emissions, the Honda Civic also enjoys the lowest ratings in spite of having a powerful engine performance and fastest acceleration while the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback lacks in that aspect too.

Handling and Steering

The 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback has a nicely aligned suspension that contributes to its pleasant presence on the road, offering a perfect balance of comfort and quickness. However, if you get to choose between the trims, the SX trim is a way more fun to drive then its younger siblings. However, the noisy engine may hamper your driving experience a little.

Braking

The brake pedal of the Rio Hatchback is easy to modulate. Its 10.1-inch front brake discs and 10.3-inch rear brake discs provide decide braking.

Even after being the lightest among the four cars, the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback has the slowest braking as it comes to a halt from 60 mph by covering a distance of 127 feet. the Honda Civic again impresses with the best braking rates of 115 feet by coming down from 60 mph, in spite of its heavy curb weight. Following it right behind is the Cooper Hardtop with a distance of 116 feet for coming to a halt from 60 mph.

2017 Kia Rio Hatchback Fuel Economy

7.7/10

The small 4 cylinder engine of the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback is very preserving in terms of fuel efficiency but it does suffer against the rivals. The manual transmission is 1 mpg better than the automatic transmission in cities.

MPG (city) 27 30 28 29
MPG (highway) 36 39 37 38
MPG (combined) 30 33 32 32

Putting up no competition at all, the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback has the lowest fuel economy ratings among the four of 27 mpg in cities, 36 mpg in the highways and 30 mpg as combined. The Chevrolet Cruze and the Hardtop Cooper share an equal combined economy of 32 mpg; however the former does better in the cities and highways than the latter with 29 mpg and 38 mpg against 28 mpg and 37 mpg respectively. The Honda Civic, proving its winning dimension, tops the table with the best fuel efficiency stats of 30 mpg in cities, 39 mpg in highways and 33 mpg combined.

2017 Kia Rio Hatchback Interior

8.0/10
"Comfortable, attractive and assembled with a feeling of quality, the interior of the 5-passenger Rio never feels cheap or too plastic.- Kelley Blue Book"

Seating and comfort

Other than the attractive and comfortable cabin, the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback also impresses with its control layout that has a straightforward design. The front seats are more than spacious but the rear seats feel a little cramped because of the lack of legroom.

All the four rivals have a similar passenger capacity of 5.

The front passengers enjoy the most headroom in the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback while it won't be much fitting in the Chevrolet Cruze in this aspect. As for the legroom, the Kia Rio exceeds all the others yet again and this time, the Cooper Hardtop suffers.

In case of the rear seat passengers, the Kia Rio again boasts the largest headroom while the Chevrolet lacks behind, for which it compensates with the most spacious legroom while the Kia Rio lacks significantly.

The Chevrolet has the second largest cargo space of 22.7 cubic feet while the 2017 Kia Rio Hatchback manages to do a little better than the Cooper with 15 cubic feet of trunk space.

2017 Kia Rio Hatchback Exterior

7.8/10

"The 2017 Kia Rio is offered in two body styles: a 4-door sedan or a sporty 5-door hatchback, which is over a foot shorter despite sharing the sedan’s 101.2-inch wheelbase. Both are extremely attractive, which has become a signature of recent Kia vehicles"- KBB
