Minivan segment has been fading out slowly thanks to the introduction of crossover SUVs. However, when you have a large family, then the 2021 Kia Sedona is just right fit. It offers practicality, comfort, and power while keeping the price tag within acceptable limits. Moreover, this segment already has better-established rivals like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.

Kia offers a decent list of safety features as standard in the 2021 Sedona but this does not seem enough to help it take on the current rivals. The Kia Sedona has received minor updates for 2021 MY but a brand-new Sedona with probably new moniker and advanced driver assistance tech is on the cards for the 2022 MY.

The 2021 Kia Sedona comes with a decent list of active and passive safety features but there’s a catch. The 2021 Sedona comes in three trims, and all the advanced safety features and driver aids are reserved only for the top trim. The base trim only comes with mandated safety features such as airbags, ABS and rear view camera as standard. Coming to the impact readiness, thanks to the use of high tensile steel which helps to keep the weight of the vehicle in control while providing structural integrity. More than 50% of Sedona’s structure is made of this high tensile steel.

Standard features include a total of six airbags, traction control, stability control, corner braking control, and hill start assist. The advanced safety features that are available on these top-level trims include a surround-view monitor, collision avoidance assist, forward-collision avoidance assist, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, driver attention warning, and smart cruise control.

2021 Kia Sedona Key Safety Features

The 2021 Kia Sedona offers a variety of safety features but most of these features are available only on the top trim.

  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD): This system uses radar to monitor the blind spots and provides a visual warning if a vehicle is detected in its proximity while the driver is changing the lanes.
  • Forward Collision Avoidance System (FCA) with Pedestrian Detection: This system uses radar present in front and if it detects a vehicle nearby or that a forward collision is imminent then it automatically applies the brakes. It also has upgraded cameras and sensor units for pedestrian detection which monitors the surroundings of the vehicle for any pedestrians and can apply the brakes automatically if it feels the vehicle is too close to a pedestrian.
  • Surround View Monitor (SVM): The surround-view monitor provides a birds' eye view of the car in the dashboard and this helps the driver to maneuver the vehicle in confined spaces.
  • Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go (SCC with S&G): The smart cruise control system helps the driver maintain a safe distance with the car in front while driving on the highway and can also apply the brakes if necessary. The stop and go system is helpful in close traffic conditions as it can bring the car to a dead stop if required and can again make it go up to the set cruising speed.

The 2021 Kia Sedona is an affordable minivan so we do not expect a lot of advanced and high-tech safety features. Safety ratings from both IIHS and NHTSA are self-explanatory on how safe the 2021 Kia Sedona is. On the flipside, it does offer a decent list of quite advanced driver assistance tech. The only drawback it has is that these features are limited just for the top trim.
