The Sorento has been around for quite some time in the market, and for 2022, Kia has decided that they will be making some interesting changes to make it more appealing. The Sorento has always been an affordable SUV with three rows and has offered a very good proposition. Kia made changes to the interior and exterior, offering more space and more practicality than before. While the 2022 Kia Sorento will keep most things from 2021, it will also add some new features. There will be exterior design upgrades, adding a boxer feeling to the SUV. Also, the wheelbase is going to increase for better interior spacing.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

While Kia’s bigger brother Telluride is the better family cruiser, if you do not want a massive SUV on your shoulders, the 2022 Kia Sorento will do just fine. It sits right in between a “crossover” and an “SUV”. The platform is new and the new chassis will offer 4 percent more tensile strength than before. Kia will also be making changes to the interior, including a newer and bigger instrument cluster, infotainment system, and ambient lighting. Kia will also offer a plug-in hybrid version along with a hybrid version as well. The 2022 Sorento will compete against popular SUVs such as Hyundai Santa Fe, Chevrolet Blazer, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

If you have a small family and let go of the rear seats, the S trim would be more than sufficient. In case you are utilizing all seats then the EX trim is more preferable and comes with a powerful engine. The EX trim also features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2022 Kia Sorento Price

Since Kia is changing a lot of things this time around, the pricing will also receive an upgrade. The base model of the Kia Sorento will start at around $30,000; even though it is not concrete yet. All the other trim options will receive the respected upgrades in terms of price. Mostly an additional $2000 added on to the outgoing price.

2022 Kia Sorento Release Date

The Sorento is expected to hit dealerships in the second half of 2021. While Kia has not made any announcement regarding this, we still expect it to roll out in the second half of 2021 or perhaps a little later.

2022 Kia Sorento Engine and Performance

The Kia Sorento will come in four powertrains in total – two gasoline engines, one hybrid, and one plug-in hybrid. The engines will mostly be the same as the 2021 model year. The base engine is a 2.5L inline-4 capable of spitting out 191 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque. The upgraded version is a 2.5L turbocharged inline-4 that offers 281 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. Both of these engines are married to the same eight-speed automatic transmission and both run on an FWD system. However, if you pay extra you can upgrade to the AWD system.

2022 Kia Sorento SUV Engine Bay

The Sorento also comes as a hybrid. You can have a 1.6L inline-4 paired with a 44-kW electric motor, and it only comes as an FWD. Also, a new plug-in hybrid will be offered, which will include a 1.6L inline-4 and a 66.9-kW electric motor. This will come with a six-speed automatic transmission. Kia’s eight-speed automatic transmission has received some praise in the past and we don’t expect that to change this time around. The turbocharged engine comes with a Dual-Clutch Transmission which makes things a lot smoother and gear changes are seamless. Shifts are quick and super smooth.

*2021 MY data used for reference

The current base model can go from 0-60 MPH in around 10 seconds, so the newer model might take slightly longer. The turbo is a bit quicker, with a 7.4 second 0-60 MPH time, which will be decent enough for most people on the highway, considering the heft of the SUV. The Sorento will also be able to tow around 3,500 lbs; so, you can use your SUV as a towing machine.

Also, Kia has highly advertised the off-roading capability. There’s a dedicated button that allows you to select either drive modes or terrain mode. The terrain model is basically for undesirable situations. We’d like to hold our horses until the Sorento comes out to test the off-roading but it looks promising for now. Looking at the charts, it is clear that all the SUVs are more or less closely matched with each other. The Blazer offers the most power, although just slightly over the Sorento. Every SUV is more or less evenly matched and none is particularly quick off the line.

2022 Kia Sorento Fuel Economy

The base engine of the Sorento promises a fuel economy of 24/29 MPG for city/highway and 26 MPG for combined driving. The turbocharged engine will offer 22/29 MPG on the city/highway and 25 MPG for combined driving. These figures are for the FWD. For AWD, the Korean SUV will manage 23/25/24 MPG for the base engine and 21/28/24 MPG for city/highway/combined driving for the turbocharged engine. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions offer more fuel economy and they can offer an excellent range.

The Sorento offers decent figures, but we would have expected a little bit more from the family-friendly SUV. Paired with a large 17.7-gallon fuel tank, it can get very good ranges on board. Given the performance, these are very good figures all across the board. However, if you want the maximum fuel economy and range, you should be getting the base engine with FWD.

All the SUVs manage to put up decent figures and range across the chart, except the Tiguan. It does not offer the best range and cannot even cross the 400-mile mark, owing to its smaller tank size. The Santa Fe offers the best range, but only narrowly beating the Sorento. The Blazer also has a decent range.

2022 Kia Sorento Interior

For 2022, Kia is making some significant changes to the interior. The entire design will be overhauled and alongside that, you will also be greeted with an array of new tech. Kia is also aiming to make the interior more spacious and aim at offering more comfort. Offering a three-row set-up and 7 seats, seven people can practically fit inside the Sorento. The AC vents will be rhombus in shape and they will have a chrome outline. The seats will have excellent stitching with the higher trims offering leather.

2022 Kia Sorento SUV Dashboard

The dashboard will look more modern with bigger screens and ambient lighting with 64 colors. Buttons and dials are also placed ergonomically and within the reach of the driver. The front seats will be 6-way manually adjustable with a 4-way adjustable passenger’s seat. The higher trims will also include heated and cooled seats as standard with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat with 2-way lumbar support and an 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat.

The second row includes captain seats with armrests and the third row will have seats for up to three people. Spacing is also not an issue for the first two rows, while the rear row will be a little cramped for taller adults. With a longer wheelbase, the Sorento will have a larger area. Materials will mostly be decent with the higher trims giving a taste of luxury.

These are just the expected figures for the Sorento since the new model will have a larger wheelbase so we’re not aware of the exact dimensions yet. The front and second-row are spacious for all the SUVs, but only the Sorento comes with a third row. For cargo, the Sorento will offer more than 12.6 cubic feet of cargo storage and the rear seats up. However, they can easily be folded down with the push of a button, and then you will get more than 45 cubic feet of cargo storage. The second row can also be folded to offer more than 70 cubic feet of cargo storage, which should be more than enough for anyone. There are also tons of small-item storage solutions inside the cabin.

2022 Kia Sorento SUV Infotainment

For infotainment, you get an 8” screen as standard but you can upgrade to the 10.3” screen. You also get a 12.3” instrument cluster. On the higher trims, you get all the goodies such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM Radio, HD Radio, navigation, wireless phone charger, USB ports for all three rows, etc. And you can also add a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system. The notable interior features of 2022 Sorento are:

  • 6 Speaker AM/FM/HD Radio Audio System
  • Steering-Wheel-Mounted Audio, Hands-Free Phone, and Cruise Control Buttons
  • 8.0-inch Touch-Screen
  • 4.2-inch Trip Computer Display
  • Tilt and Telescopic Steering Column
  • Rear Air Conditioning Vents
  • Front & Rear Door Bottle Holders
  • Dual Illuminated Visor Vanity Mirrors
  • 6-Way Adjustable Driver's Seat
  • One-Touch Sliding & Folding 2nd-Row Seats

2022 Kia Sorento Exterior

The Sorento will also undergo a redesign on the exterior. While it might not look like much at first glance, Kia is going for a boxer look. No longer will the front fascia look curved or rounded. Expect 2022 to look exactly the same as the 2021 model year. The 2021 Sorento received some significant exterior overhaul as part of the fourth-generation refresh.

2022 Kia Sorento SUV Three Quarter View

The front fascia housing the stylish LED headlights will have a strong radiator grille, with boxy edges and a bolder stance. The hood will also have strong creases to reinstate its bold character. The sides will also have strong lines and curvier windows. The rear fascia sees multiple LED taillights with a hidden windshield wiper.

The 2022 Sorento is not a light SUV by any means, but it's right where you would expect it to. The new SUV will also have a longer wheelbase and look quite dominating on the streets. With a large enough ground clearance, you can also take it out for off-roading. Some exterior features of the Kia Sorento are:

  • 20” wheels
  • Express Open/close sliding and tilting glass
  • Deep tinted glass
  • Smart power liftgate rear cargo access
  • Auto on/off projector-beam LED low/high beam auto high-beam headlamps

2022 Kia Sorento Safety

Kia claims that their new Sorento will have a 4% increased tensile strength. Since the new Sorento will have a different chassis, we cannot conclude if the new Sorento will have the ratings of the 2021 model year. However, we expect that the 2022 Sorento will also be stronger and safer than the outgoing model, which already received great safety ratings and a Top Safety Pick for 2021 by IIHS.There will also be new safety features and the higher trims will enjoy all of it as standard. The new features will include:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking w/ Junction Assist
  • Blind Spot View Monitor w/ Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Safe Exit System
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist – Pedestrians and Cyclists
  • Parking distance warning front and rear parking sensors
  • Surround 360-degree camera

2022 Kia Sorento Competition

2022 Kia Sorento vs 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe

Identical in a lot of ways, Santa Fe and Sorento share a lot of similarities. Santa Fe’s big grille might not be everybody’s mojo, but some people might prefer it. The Santa Fe cannot fit seven people, but the Sorento can.

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe

While the interior is almost similar in spacing, Sorento has that extra trick up its sleeve of fitting more people. Performance-wise too, they are mostly identical with the Sorento having a slightly lesser range.

2022 Kia Sorento vs 2021 Chevrolet Blazer

The Blazer is a very stylish and hunky SUV from Sorento and some people prefer its look more than anything else. It also offers a similar performance as the Sorento, albeit slightly quicker.

2021 Chevrolet Blazer

The Sorento also has a decent fuel economy, though not as much as the Sorento. Also, it cannot fit 7 people but offers very good interior spacing too.

2022 Kia Sorento vs 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

The Tiguan is a great offering from the Germans, offering performance similar to that of the Sorento, but the Tiguan is a bit sportier. Also, the Tiguan cannot offer fuel economy on par with the Sorento, and also it has lesser interior spacing.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Despite that, the Tiguan has good driving dynamics and performs well on the highway. The interior quality is also decent. It comes down to the personal preference of the person.

2022 Kia Sorento Final Verdict

The 2022 Kia Sorento will bring in some fresh upgrades to keep the competition healthy and the SUV on its toes. The interior spacing will allow more practicality and the new tech will surely make the lives of owners a lot easier. With a lot of safety features as well, the Sorento makes it hard to look away from it. By getting a boxier and more serious design, it certainly has attracted lots of SUV buyers. When it goes live in the latter half of the year, hopefully, it will see good days.
