The Kia Soul is quite a lovable oddball that has a massive following among all Kia enthusiasts. Its quirky style has grown on everyone as this crossover is a prime example of daily utility in a compact package. Its boxy dimensions may resemble the blueprints of an SUV, but its tall ride height and lack of all-wheel-drive may fool anyone into thinking this is a hatchback. Nevertheless, the Kia Soul is well known for its practical cabin, efficient powertrain, and a range of family-friendly features.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Soul’s third generation is quite new when it comes to recent refreshes and updates. Hence, the 2022 Kia Soul will most likely be a minor mid-cycle refresh. The Soul competes against the likes of splendid compact crossovers like its sibling Hyundai Kona, the Honda HR-V, the Subaru Crosstrek, and a bunch of other crossovers. With this segment already crowded with many nameplates, the Soul easily distinguishes itself apart from the rest, thanks to its eye-catching style. Here we explore all the features and traits that make the 2022 Kia Soul a charismatic car.

2022 Kia Soul Features

The 2022 Kia Soul will be available in six trim levels: LX, X-Line, GT-Line, S, EX, and Turbo. For almost every trim level, you get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. The top trim Turbo offers a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder churning out 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The LX comes with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, but a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. The Turbo model offers a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

We Recommend

The EX trim would be the best fit with the available features and price. It adds an array of comfort features that makes it premium over other trims. With extra power, the turbo trim is slightly better if you can shed some more bucks.

2022 Kia Soul Price

The 2022 Kia Soul should be priced in a similar price range to its 2021 predecessor. We expect Kia to keep things light when it comes to the wallet, with the base trim starting around $19,000. The top-draw trim will end at an expected price range of $29,000.

2022 Kia Soul Release Date

Although Kia hasn't provided a tentative date for the arrival of the 2022 Soul, we expect that the small crossover utility vehicle will go on sale by early summer.

2022 Kia Soul Engine and Performance

The Kia Soul continues to offer 2 choices of powertrains with its 2022 iteration. The first option is a basic 2.0L naturally aspirated inline-4 engine that runs on gasoline and produces 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. Kia mates this engine to a continuously variable transmission similar to most small crossovers. However, as a bonanza, this engine can also be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, which may appeal to traditional shift-stick motorists.

The second engine on offer is a spritely 1.6L turbocharged inline-4, which offers a power output of 201 horses and 195 twisties. This engine is matched to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. However, the catch here is that the engine doesn’t synchronize well with the dual-clutch gearbox and often feels jerky to handle at low speeds or traffic signals. The Soul runs on the FWD drivetrain as standard this year as well.

With its standard engine, the Soul does struggle to catch up to highway speeds, as evident by its sluggish 0-60 MPH time of 8.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 16.4 seconds. Still, the Soul finishes higher in the power charts than the majority of its rivals. The Soul equipped with the turbo 4-cylinder engine clocks in the 0-60 MPH time within 6.4 seconds, which is quite impressive for its segment.

Besides, the Soul also handles exceptionally well and the ride quality feels composed. The Subaru Crosstrek leads the way with more power onboard its base trim, although its flat-4 engine does run out of steam on highways.

2022 Kia Soul Fuel Economy

Since the standard powertrain remains unchanged, the 2022 Soul is expected to shell out the same fuel economy figures as its predecessor model. The Soul can spin around for a splendid 29 MPG in the city and 35 MPG on the highway with the base 4-cylinder engine under the hood. Thus, the Soul gets a frugal combined 31 MPG. However, the Soul loses a few fuel economy figures when equipped with the manual gearbox, with the 25 MPG city, 31 MPG highway, and 27 MPG combined.

Moving higher up the trim pyramid, the X-Line, EX, and GT-Line trims are rated at EPA estimates of 28/33/30 for city/highway/combined. The Turbo trim loses further MPG figures off the scale, as its turbo inline-4 engine sacrifices fuel efficiency for power. This trim is rated at 27 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway, with a combined 27 MPG. The Soul leads the way in its segment with its class-leading range and fuel economy figures.

2022 Kia Soul Interior

The Soul’s interiors might receive some light visual upgrades. Again, don’t expect any dramatic change to the design language. The cabin is surprisingly spacious for a small crossover utility vehicle and can fit 5 individuals. However, we recommend carrying only 4 passengers so that the backseaters don’t end up rubbing their shoulders. The cabin features a modern design well adept with the taste of its audience.

The well-packaged cabin grants adequate legroom in both the front and rear passenger compartments. Two 6-foot passengers can feel at ease inside the spacious front cabin. The driver also gets a variety of seat adjustability options like a 6-way power on the lower trims and a 10-way adjustable power with 2-way power lumbar on the Turbo trim. The seats are adorned with high-quality cloth upholstery as standard. Drivers can add a touch of opulence by opting for synthetic leather upholstery.

The Soul offers 24.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which is more than adequate for a small-sized family. Surprisingly, this compact crossover offers a maximum free space of 62.1 cubes behind the front seats, when the rear seats are folded in a 60/40 split. We expect these splendid cargo figures to carry over to the 2022 model as well.

In terms of interior passenger space, all the small crossovers are neck-to-neck with their interior dimensions. However, the Kia Soul takes the onus with its class-leading maximum cargo capacity. Thus, the Soul gives you the convenience of an SUV in a compact package.

Moving over to the technological side, the Soul will continue to offer a 7-inch touchscreen as standard, in sync with Kia’s latest UVO infotainment system. Moreover, the base trim will include standard tech features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker sound system, navigation, and Bluetooth. The notable interior features of 2022 Kia Soul includes:

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen
  • USB ports
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Wireless charging
  • Harman Kardon audio system

2022 Kia Soul Exterior

The Kia Soul went through an exterior update just recently with the 2020 model year. Still, Kia might be looking to implement a slight mid-cycle refresh to the boxy exteriors to make it more attractive to the audience. A slightly wider grille, sharper lines, bolder bumpers, and possibly new exterior colors might give the Soul a much-needed competitive edge. The peculiar front fascia with the famous ‘tiger-nose treatment might be retained for the 2022 Soul as well.

This quirky design is still a huge hit among customers, but Kia might want to get rid of the Soul’s boxy shape. Customers are demanding a floating roof design, so the Soul might already be under the works for a visual refreshment. However, we have to await the official news from Kia regarding any exterior updates.

The Soul’s funky dimensions will be retained for the 2022 iteration as well. Although its dimensions are smaller than most of its rivals, it manages to offer about the same interior space as its rivals owing to its smart packaging.

2022 Kia Soul Safety

Kia has always ensured a top-notch safety roster for every car in its lineup. However oddly, the Soul doesn’t have a plethora of standard safety tech available, unlike most Kia models. Basic safety features like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection are absent on the base trims. The Soul only gets a full suite of safety features as you move higher up the trim lineup.

Nevertheless, the Soul was rated an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2021. Optional safety features like blind-spot detection, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, and lane departure warning amp up the safety factor of the Soul. Most of these safety features will be retained for 2022 and equipping all of them should be the driver’s top priority. The notable safety features included with the 2022 Kia Soul are:

  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Driver Drowsiness Warning
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Forward Collision-avoidance Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning

2022 Kia Soul Competition

2022 Kia Soul vs 2021 Hyundai Kona

The battle between these two Korean brothers appears very close on paper. However, the key differences become crystal clear when you consider the features that are on offer. The Soul has the advantage in terms of fuel economy when you consider the base trim, although both the crossovers are even in the power charts.

The Soul also offers a palette of 17 exterior colors to choose from including monotones and two-tone options, compared to 9 color options on the Kona. Both these cars are about the same size, but the Soul simply offers more in terms of maximum cargo space available. However, the Kona hits back with its available AWD drivetrain and a plethora of standard safety techs, both of which the Soul lacks. Deciding between these two is an ordeal, but if you want a well-rounded small car within a budget, the Soul is the better sibling.

2022 Kia Soul vs 2021 Honda HR-V

Both the Honda HR-V and the Kia Soul stand out with their unique styles in their overcrowded segment. However, the HR-V has bragging rights with its available AWD drivetrain, high resale value, and more trim levels to choose from. However, the HR-V only has one engine option in its arsenal, which is unfortunately lackluster when compared to its competition. Fuel economy may be the HR-V’s strong point, but the Soul excels in that sector as well.

The Soul also offers more cargo versatility, although the HR-V’s rear Magic Seat is quite impressive as well. The HR-V gets pricier as you add extra driver assistance tech on the higher trim levels, so you may be better off driving a mid-trim level Kia Soul with the same features available to save some valuable bucks.

2022 Kia Soul vs 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek is quite a unique vehicle in the sense that it offers an AWD drivetrain as standard. This justifies it as a capable off-roader in the small crossover segment, a trait that is missing in most competitors including the Kia Soul. However, stellar off-roading comes at a price, as the Crosstrek falls behind the Soul in terms of fuel economy.

The flat-four aboard the Crosstrek barely offers any doses of excitement unlike the Soul, which is a delightful suburban commuter. The Crosstrek also lacks in cargo space compared to the versatile Soul. The Soul appears the better deal overall with its lower price tag. Still, if you need the AWD drivetrain, pick the Crosstrek at your leisure.

2022 Kia Soul Final Verdict

The 2022 Kia Soul is a splendid everyday car with a host of features and amenities to make navigating through the rush-hour traffic a bit more enjoyable. This unique vehicle makes heads turn whenever it passes by the street. The Soul’s commendable utility and versatility fit well within the requirements of every family. Paired with Kia’s excellent warranty service and a pocket-friendly price tag, the Soul justifies itself as the perfect commuter vehicle.
