Kia Sportage, your average vehicle, has the same old standard features and nothing much to offer, but it is an improved SUV from the last year's model, which includes a better engine and a few extra safety features. The interior is quite comfortable, it sports a quiet ride, and its interior quality is better than most SUVs on the market right now. The SUV might not have much to offer because it already has all the things that you need. The price is a little expensive, mainly because of the interior quality standards maintained, and the new 2.4L, 4 cylinder turbo engine.

Yet, the Kia Sportage still manages to keep up with the competition in the market and has decent overall performance and comfortability, keeping in mind that this is a compact crossover SUV, not too huge and not too small in any department.

With regard to the safety offering, the 2018 Kia Sportage has a perfect five on five stars for its overall safety rating in the NHTSA, which is no small feat. In particular, a five-star rating for the Side crash safety test. However, it does not do well in the Frontal cash and Rollover safety tests. It is relatively the same case if you look at it from the IIHS perspective as well. The new Kia Sportage competes with the likes of the Hyundai Tucson and the Mazda CX-5.

The minor safety feature that the 2018 Kia Sportage has over the 2017 model is autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, which is not a whole lot but pretty useful if the SUV is almost about to hit something or even crash. The other standard safety features include Anti-lock brakes, Stability Control, Front and side-impact airbags, pretensioners, and the common security system. These features do make the users more comfortable riding the SUV but how well does it perform in safety tests?

What features make the 2018 Kia Sportage safe?

KIA always aims to provide the maximum features, no matter the category to its users. This is one of the reasons despite having an average higher price, the number of features offset and still make it a crowd favorite. The likes of Dynamax™ full-time all-wheel-drive system that helps prevent or mitigate the chances of crashes by a lot are one of the few features provided by the KIA SUV the other safety features that make the Sportage safe are

  1. Anti-lock brakes: ABS brakes automatically sense when an accident is about to take place and prevent the wheels of the SUV from locking themselves enabling grip for the user, to stop the SUV from an accident. This comes standard from the LX trim and above.

  2. Stability control: This feature allows the SUV to sense when the SUV is about to lose power and enables the user access over the brakes in order to prevent any further damage or accident. This comes standard from the LX trim and above.

  3. Integrated turn signal mirrors: The side mirrors are attached with a high density LED light that is arranged in such a manner it does not distract the driver, but also indicates clearly to the surrounding drivers the direction the vehicle is planning to turn. This is an optional feature on all trims.
  4. Daytime running lights: Usually headlights, it is an automated feature where the vehicle’s lights are on whenever the vehicle is in Gear when the handbrake is on or the engine is on. This is not a standard feature but can be added as an optional feature.
  5.  Dynamax™ full-time all-wheel-drive system: Kia Dynamax™ AWD is an intelligent all-wheel-drive system that upon detection of a loss of traction, it will divert torque to the rear wheels to improve traction and performance. This is an optional feature for all trims but is highly recommended.

Is the 2018 Kia Sportage safe?

Yes, according to the data provided by NHTSA and IIHS, the SUV has one of the best safety ratings compared to most contemporaries that come in this price range of the Sportage. The structure and the build quality are also good and perform well against crashes and accidents. The SUV does provide extra safety features such as  autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, which assures that Kia has put great effort into improving the safety of the SUV. It also fares really well against its competitors like the 2018 Hyundai Tucson and the Mazda Cx-5, especially in the rollover statistics. For the low cost, KIA offers more bang for the buck.
