Detailed Review

The Korean manufacturer, Kia, has been the underdog with some great revelations in the past years. They’ve gradually been producing cars to match up with the mettle of the big guns, and while they have taken their time in perfecting – um improving – their machines. Come 2018, the Stinger was a greatly crafted sedan supplementing their vision. Encompassing a base variant alongside GT configurations, the Stinger was a great rival on paper to many premium brands but then again, Kia still has a long way to go in establishing itself as a brand.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial June 18, 2019

The 2019 Kia Stinger GT comes unchanged from its previous iteration and is powered by a V6 3.3L engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Propelled by the rear wheels, the sedan groups a host of features alongside great driving dynamics to compete with the likes of Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack, Chevrolet Camaro 2SS and the German BMW M2 Competition. Another year, another great list of competitors, can the Stinger GT make an impression? Let’s find out.

2019 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Features

The new Kia Stinger retains its 5 trims from the previous iteration. These 5 trims are split in 2 configurations – RWD and AWD, an extra $2,200 cost difference between the two drivetrains. Starting at $32,900 for the RWD base Stinger, the price goes up to $49,990 for the GT2 trim. The base trims feature a modest 2.0L powertrain but the GT configurations and up include a more powerful 3.3L V6 powertrain.

Kia’s base Stinger offers plenty of features at this price and it also includes an array of impressive safety features. The Korean sedan also provides a stunning powertrain warranty coverage of 10 years or 100,000 miles.

The Stinger GT has performance chops to back up its striking looks. Acceleration is strong at any speed, and the engine is well-behaved when you aren't hammering the pedal. Handling and steering are great at this price point.-edmunds

We Recommend

The Premium trim gets adjustable steering, which aids ergonomics a lot. It also gets a bigger infotainment screen.

2019 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Engine

A robust, muscular 3.3L V6 engine mated to 8-speed automatic transmission powers the sporty Stinger GT that drives it via its rear wheels. This union spurts out 365 horses and 376 pound feet of pulling power that is very evident in its zippy acceleration and rapid pace. With refined and buttery gear shifts, you’d feel how swift this power-encompassing enthusiast machine runs but all that zippy-zappy clunking of the engine consequently affects its fuel efficiency that we will see in a bit below. Its thrust is second only to the smooth layer of peanut butter on your toast.

Stinger GT’s driving modes are decisive in its performance; Eco mode holds back the ability of the might under the hood, Comfort mode puts you more on the stretch-your-hand-in-the-back-seat sort of style, but oh boy get on to the Sport mode and the hooligan in you will happily endure its harsh shifts and vigorous galloping of the stallion rolling the rear wheels.

And along came its rivals with their own arsenal built around to sting the Stinger. Half the field sans the Cadillac ATS Coupe stand above 400 horses and torque in contrast with the Kia. Most powerful? In terms of output, that award goes to the Dodge Challenger R/T.

Acceleration

Plunging the rear wheels screaming from naught to 60 mph takes the Kia Stinger GT 4.7s and the quarter mile in 12.9s. Evidently, it doesn’t take a second look to deem how rapid the Stinger Gt flies but however, its rivals are way faster in their propulsion. The only exception being the ATS Coupe that also holds a relatively smaller powertrain. Yet again, the Challenger R/T reserves the top spot in the segment followed by the Mustang Bullitt.

Ride and Handling

Strapped atop a mean and strong built, the Stinger GT keeps comfortable driving and spirited driving dynamics completely at bay. And that is a very positive attribute. Albeit handling around corners exhibits some body roll, they’re still a joy to hustle around.

Throw around the steering, the 3-spoke wheel gives great feedback and input is fairly great as well plus with precise accuracy. Comfort mode rolls the sedan easily over bumps and imperfect tarmac while Sport mode stiffens the dampers and confers an energetic spirit propelling the rear wheels.

The ride quality is quite good for a sedan of this price, but then what Kia is aiming for evening with the premium and luxury brands above its forte, it falls short of living that dream.

Braking

The brakes on the Stinger GT are as good as their powertrain. Linear pedal feel sans any forceful jab, the sedan stops gradually and quickly at 104 feet from 60 mph to 0. However sport mode stiffens up the sedan, driving it more robust than in other modes, needs a bit more firm thump from the foot to stop the sedan. The Chevrolet Camaro 2SS also exhibits impressive braking performance.

2019 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Fuel Economy

Call the Kia Stinger GT anything but frugal; the menacing sporty machine clocks in 19 miles per gallon and 25 mpg on the highway; combined miles per gallon gives GT an output of 21. These mediocre results are not surprising for a car of the Stinger’s caliber. Its rivals are relatively worse however the Cadillac chugs less fuel thanks to its modest machine resting inside compared to the competition.

2019 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Interior

Interior (Seating and Comfort)

Capacity to seat 5 passengers, the Kia Stinger GT’s interior is roomy and spacious. Commodious legroom and headspace is found in the front while tall passengers will meet the roof in the back due to the sloping roofline due to which visibility is also hampered. Legroom isn’t all that great in the back. Complementing the poor visibility is the pillar placement in the back. The seating on the GT is more comfortable due to a host of adjustable configurations.

The cabin tries to look sharp and tasteful like the German marque’s, and succeeds on some accounts of the quality materials used around the cabin. Door coverings are embalmed with leather while the cabin caked with aluminum trim around looks quite good as but just not the German’s eminence.

2019 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Exterior

The 2019 Kia Stinger’s lissome body is a winner.

Exterior (Design and Measurements)

Sat low with long hood and compact rear, Kia's sports sedan has a design to match or even better the elegance as seen on the top guns like BMW and Mercedes – one where they almost got it right, also sculpting an exclusive sporty look throughout the GT sedan. The body of the Stinger GT has accented designs all around its bumpers down to the tinniest detailing of the sedan.

Rolling on 19” alloy wheels, the sedan spans 190” long with a 114” wheelbase. Faux air vents sit on the hood giving a rather bold look, with the famous prominent chrome-accented Kia front grille. The Korean sedan’s insignia sits overhead the grilles, flanked by dual-lens LED headlights.

Its fenders bulge appropriately with air intakes placed right alongside it by the side skirts. Hard character lines draw across the profile, sweeping roofline with shark antenna, keeping in mind its interior headroom sloping downwards completing the side meeting the rear taillights. At the rear, above the trunk faintly protrudes a spoiler for a bit of downforce. Stylish LED taillights stare beyond and quad-twin-tail pipes sit on either sides.

2019 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Competition

Kia Stinger GT vs Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack

The American muscle, Dodge Challenger R/T, flaunts excellent power delivery alongside smooth and incredibly quick acceleration. The sedan also handle well around corners but doesn’t feel as agile or nimble as the Kia Stinger GT nor does it warrant the extra mile your fuel tank can hold. The Korean sedan faces some body roll while the American bouncer keeps them limited. Both share compromised rear visibility and comfortable leather seats. While you can sit in the rear seats of the Dodge, the Stinger GT will give tall passengers a stiff neck because of shorter roofline. Their infotainment system are fairly easy to use while remaining intuitive but Dodge has the edge over being one of the best the segment.

Which one’s the better buy? Too tough to tell, really as they’re both priced similarly and are purpose built vehicles. Now are you a muscle maniac with craze over raw power or the enthusiast who’d like a quick and elegant sport sedan with the looks and practicality? Dodge the Kia if you want power, else the Stinger GT is your challenger if it’s the latter.

Kia Stinger GT vs Chevrolet Camaro 2SS

These two muscular machines are almost similar in few aspects but the Kia Stinger has the edge over the Chevrolet Camaro in almost the rest. Albeit being more Herculean than the Stinger, the Korean machine has more enthusiastic driving dynamics along with quality interior build and commodious storage. The seating on both these performance cars are comfortable with the exception being the rear on the American coupe; place kids not adults back there however with the Stinger GT tall seaters will not appreciate the roofline design getting in their way. Frugality suffers on both these cars but Kia is marginally better.

Yet again, the question boils down to what you’d like to own. Overall the Kia Stinger GT looks the better buy but it isn’t a full-fledged muscle coupe unlike the Camaro that should be your choice of poison if all you want to do is flex that brawn.

Kia Stinger GT vs BMW M2 Competition

Priced a bit more than the premium sport sedan, Stinger GT, the BMW M2 Competition is luxury sports coupe that has the thrills and frills of being an enthusiastic machine. The Stinger GT has a few magic up its sleeve but they still don’t match up to the German’s seamless engineering and precision detailing. Even the interiors are a notch above the Kia’s cabin design including features and technology. Both feature a 6-cylinder engines where the M2 boasts mightier outputs and performance and is in fact equipped with the M4 engine with more refinement and tuning.

Is the Bavarian coupe worth the price jump over the Kia Stinger GT? That’s not for us to say for both these cars are excellent buys at their respective pricing. Nonetheless if those five digits drill less of a hole in your pocket, the Germans await thy order.

2019 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Final Verdict

Kia has Stinger GT almost up with the likes of the Germans and that is a bold statement to make. Quality interior with plush cabin design and seating, comfortable seats, spirited driving dynamics alongside brawny powertrain and elegant styling, the sedan has it all. Amongst its rivals, there are few who can give it a sturdy rivalry, but when they do, the Korean 4-wheeler makes sure it doesn’t go down without a proper fight.

Consider Stinger GT as that new employee in the block; he’s shown impressive skills and has an excellent resume, but ‘course he’s still under probation and has a long way to go before he’s entrusted with grandeur responsibilities. Having said that the Stinger GT on the other hand is here to stay, and we give it all thumbs up for the sedan to growl under your control on a regular.
