The Germans have an undisputed monopoly in the sports sedan segment, and Kia has been trying its best to mark its presence with the ‘Stinger’ since 2018. For the year 2022, the GT trim has been removed from the catalog, and now Kia offers only Stinger GT-Line, GT1, and GT2. The Kia Stinger is a lovely machine and provides decent engine options one will ever need. It won’t be an overstatement to say that in its segment it is the most sporty car.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The performance sedan segment is crowded with the likes of BMW 330i, Alfa Romeo Giulia, and Genesis G70. Yes, there is only one German here. Others enter the game in the latter part of the trims with the beefier V-6 engines. The 2022 Kia Stinger is yet to prove itself despite having a bonkers 300 hp with the base 2.5L turbo engine. The car is merely five years old and yet has put a lot on the table. With the expected base price of $36,100, Kia Stinger GT-Line will become a strong contender for the upcoming year.

2022 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Features

The 2022 Kia stinger GT will be available in three trim levels- GT-Line, GT1, and GT-2. For 2022, the base GT-Line replaces the 2.0-liter Turbocharged engine with a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. The engine makes out 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft. of torque. The GT1 and GT2 trim levels come with 19-inch aluminum wheels compared to the 18-inch wheels on the GT-Line.

We Recommend

We would opt for the GT1 trim as it comes with notable features compared to the base GT-Line. The GT1 gets larger 19-inch wheels along with features like a glass sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, blind-spot monitor, and vinyl seats.

2022 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Engine and Performance

The 2022 Kia Stinger is getting some changes in the power department. The good old 2.0L turbo engine has been sent off and replaced by the new 2.5L, Intercooled turbo engine which returns a staggering 300 hp & 311 lb-ft of torque; the best in the segment. The 8-Speed transmission with paddle shifters will remain standard on all the trim levels.

Still, craving for more? The GT1 and GT2 trims will have a Twin-Turbo, 3.3L V-6 engine with 365 hp and 376 torque. These numbers are very disheartening if compared to the V-6 variants of the corresponding rivals. Not sure what Kia is thinking here with just adding 65 hp more to the spec sheet.

*2021 Data used for reference

The Kia Stinger has the best on paper numbers and it shows in the 0-60 MPH drag. While it isn’t the fastest in the segment, with 5.2 seconds on the clock it is still respectable. The Alfa Romeo Giulia is quickest by a very short margin.

How does the 2022 Kia Stinger Handle?

Besides the base engine upgrade, Stinger is staying the same for the year 2022. The suspension setup, brakes are being carried forward and we should expect similar driving dynamics as of the 2021 Stinger. The suspension tuning has been done to perfection. As everyone knows sports cars are infamous for their stiffer ride qualities, but it isn’t that bad in Stinger in sports mode here.

Switch it to comfort mode and it will become more compliant, the gear shifts will not be as aggressive as it doesn’t even cross 2000 RPM. The steering response is well balanced and never will you ever feel the car begging for more grip, it just sticks to the road. The overall driving dynamics of the 2022 Stinger are very well suited for daily driving.

2022 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Fuel Economy

As we have a new more powerful engine on our hands it would be fair to think if the fuel economy has been affected. The interesting thing is that the fuel efficiency of the 2022 Stinger is slightly better than its 2020 counterpart. It offers 22 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. On GT1 and GT2 trims though, the V-6 engines are going to chug down the fuel faster with the economy of 18 MPG city & 25 MPG highway.

It’s not all bad news, Stinger has the largest fuel tank in its segment and you are covered for a substantial distance. You might even get better returns by driving on eco mode, worth a try isn’t it? But the BMW 3 Series is the most fuel-efficient car in the segment offering 36 MPG on the highway. And with its fuel tank capacity of 15.6 gallons, it offers a maximum range of 562 miles.

2022 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Interior

The only interior upgrade 2022 Stinger is going to have is the new infotainment screen. The rest is expected to remain the same as the 2021 model. The overall quality of the interior on the Stinger is premium. The leatherwork along with brushed aluminum trims on the door looks nice indeed. The same ideology has been implemented on the dashboard too. We have a flat-bottom steering wheel with a GT-Line badge at the bottom.

The seats on this car are more bolstered than you might expect at this price point and the leather treatment will make you ask yourself if you are really in an affordable car? The second row might prove problematic for some taller passengers as the sloping roofline will greet them as they try to rest their heads. But the knee room and under-thigh support on these seats are very good.

2022 Stinger will offer the best in class 23.3 cubic feet of trunk space and with the seats folded flat, it becomes 40.9 cubic feet. The hatchback-style tailgate opening makes working around this trunk very convenient. BMW also has a respectable boot space.

  • GT-Line Badging on the steering

2022 Kia Stinger: Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2021 Stinger used to have a 7.0-inch touch screen but now all the 2022 trims will get a 10.3-inch touch screen system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay.

The UI of the infotainment system has been changed a little this time and has a purple overall theme. The screen is very wide and it could be utilized in a split-screen manner with two apps at a time.

2022 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Exterior

The 2022 Stinger is going to be just a design refresh. The headlight setup is expected to get an update. The 2021 Stinger had LED headlights with split DRLs and it would be interesting to see what’s new for 2022. Honestly, Stinger doesn’t even need a refresh as it already looks super aggressive. The numerous air intakes on the car suggest its performance-oriented nature. Sadly the ones on the hood are fake.

The rear end will house the same wide strip tail light with reflectors going beyond them. The current Stinger has a perfect design language to match its performance and with the minor upgrades in 2022 it is bound to shake up the sports sedan segment.

  • GT Hood Trim, High Gloss Black
  • Wide Sunroof w/ Power Sunshade
  • Solar Control Glass
  • 18-inch Vertex alloy wheels

2022 Kia Stinger GT Sedan Final Verdict

The 2021 Kia Stinger itself was a value-for-money car, and with the upcoming 2.5L Turbo engine, things will be better. The 2022 Kia Stinger offers stunning performance at the base trim, and even the GT1 and GT2 trims are beastly, but they fall short when compared to their V6 rivals. The 2022 Kia Stinger GT-Line should be an ideal choice for anyone who wants a practical sports car that does it all, from carrying groceries to track days.
