The 2020 Kia Telluride might have an aggressive exterior silhouette, but the interior is that much more sumptuous to balance it out. Now that is something which you don’t find every day! With a base price of $31,890, the 2020 Kia Telluride is one of the most affordable crossover SUVs on the market. It is available in 4 trim levels, with the top-tier SX trim setting you back by just $43,790. It shares its underpinnings with the also new Hyundai Palisade. Moreover, Telluride's safety quotient is certainly one of the best in the business, which says a lot. The crossover SUV faces stiff competition from the likes of Chevrolet Traverse, Hyundai Palisade, and Honda Pilot.

Which trim should you buy?

To avail the best features for your car and keeping affordability in mind, our recommendation is the EX trim, which is available for $37,290. This price is for the FWD, but by spending a little extra, the AWD option is more thrilling. Buying the EX trim unlocks a few features which are not available on the lower trims. In addition to the features standard on LX and S, you’ll get Tri-zone automatic climate control, Real leather upholstery, a Hands-free liftgate, Power-adjustable front seats with heated functionality, and more.

2020 Kia Telluride Engine and Performance

8.0/10

However, the big Kia didn't feel as responsive to throttle inputs at lower speeds as did some of its turbocharged rivals - Car and Driver

The 2020 Kia Telluride has only one engine option which is a 3.8L V6 engine. It is capable of putting out 291 hp @ 6,000 RPM and has a peak torque of 262 lb-ft @ 5,200 RPM. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The standard drivetrain delivers power to the front wheels, but all trims are also available in AWD. The V6 is sufficient, but we’d have liked it to perform better. The engine delivers its best when it's revved up. The torque output, however, seems sluggish and lacks excitement. The downshifts are quick, but even when the transmission is responsive, the car just lacks that passing power on the highway.

As the numbers suggest, the 2020 Kia Telluride is the slowest from 0-60 MPH, as it does it in 7.2 seconds. The 2020 Honda Pilot is mighty quick even though it has the least powerful engine among the 4 cars taken for comparison, showing how well the Honda’s gearbox is in putting all the power down on the tarmac. When comparing the price tag, Kia Telluride is the most expensive option in the segment.

On the road, the SUV performs well and has decent comfort, but off-road it seems to struggle a bit. With a soft suspension and light but firm steering wheel, it is somewhat difficult to maneuver around in the giant SUV. Around corners, the 2020 Kia Telluride doesn’t exhibit much body roll. Opting for the AWD will improve your traction, and it sticks better to its line. When compared to its rivals, almost every other car performs better off-road, but the comfort level inside the cabin of the Telluride is unmatched.

Having such bold exterior dimensions like the 2020 Kia Telluride, braking performance becomes an important aspect for consideration. With a 13.4-inch front rotor and a 12.0-inch rear rotor, it does a better job at braking than at speeding. It goes from 60-0 MPH in just about 120 feet, which is best in the class. The brake pedal is smooth and focused, giving you an immediate response.

2020 Kia Telluride Fuel Economy

7.0/10

Fuel economy is where the 2020 Kia Telluride is average. Its average fuel economy might be of concern to some of the buyers, and with a heavily crowded class like the crossover SUV, Kia had their motives firm from the beginning. The Telluride is neither meant to be highly efficient nor has to be a high-performance machine. As far as figures go, the FWD will fetch you a city mileage of 20 MPG and highway mileage of 26 MPG, giving it a combined economy of 23 MPG. The AWD performs worse than the FWD and gives a combined MPG of 21 MPG instead of 23 for the FWD.

2020 Kia Telluride Interior

8.5/10

The interior is at its most dashing when draped in an off-white hue that buyers will regret the moment the first juicebox goes flying - The CarConnection

The interior of the 2020 Kia Telluride is one of the best in the class. Even though it has an affordable price tag, the features offered are plentiful, and the overall seating comfort is excellent. The dashboard and center console design are majestic. The two-tier two-tone dashboard has an edgy, contemporary look to it. The center console is fitted with a 10.3-inch infotainment display, and below that are 3 trapezoidal vents. Buttons and knobs are built with attractive-looking materials and are well-placed for the driver to manipulate the controls.

The lower trims like LX and S offer SOFINO artificial leather upholstery which is not as luxurious as the real leather upholstery offered in EX and SX but has a good look to it and is easier to clean in case of any spillage or dirt. According to the trim, the Telluride offers second-row bench seats or captain seats. The front seats are heated and ventilated and are 8-way power-adjustable. Taking a look at the table, the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse has the best numbers in terms of headroom, shoulder room, and legroom in the first, second, and third row of seats. It also has the most cargo space behind the third-row seats, which is outstanding. The 2020 Kia Telluride comes a close second in every aspect.

The 2020 Kia Telluride is packed with features to keep you entertained. The base trim is fitted with an 8-inch touchscreen display and a 6-speaker audio system, but as you move towards the SX trim, you’ll get a 10.3-inch touchscreen display and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, which is well-reputed for a class apart sound quality. The infotainment system is equipped with technologies like AM/FM Radio, Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, 5 USB charging ports, wireless charging pad, etc. The system itself has excellent clarity and has a friendly user interface as well.

Some of the standout interior features are as follows:

  • SOFINO artificial leather upholstery for LX and S trims
  • Real leather upholstery for EX and SX trims
  • 8-way power-adjustable seats with heated functionality
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • 60/40 split-folding second and third-row seats

2020 Kia Telluride Exterior

8.0/10

The Telluride looks substantial but is also friendly and approachable - Motortrend

The 2020 Kia Telluride’s stellar looks and styling are probably its most stand-out feature. Having a massive on-road presence with classy exterior looks makes it one of the most attractive-looking SUVs on the market. The front fascia of the car has a brawny aggressive look to it characterized by a huge, wide, and narrow grille with chrome inserts, upright daytime running LED headlights, front bumper with fog light housing, and chrome accents. The massive hood has “Telluride” badging on it emphasizing the stature of the car.

Coming to the side of the car, the 20-inch aluminum wheels, sharp body lines, complex chrome strips running through the windows, and center roof pillar catch your attention immediately. The ground clearance on the 2020 Kia Telluride is 8.0 inches, which is also the best in class. The rear end of the car comprises LED taillights, a rear lip spoiler, a shark fin antenna, and dual chrome exhaust tips. All in all, the exterior is difficult to fault and one of the best ones that Kia has produced so far.

The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse is an absolute beast when it comes to on-road presence. With its best-in-class long wheelbase, length and height, it certainly wins the exterior section in terms of dimensions. However, when it comes to styling, we think that the 2020 Kia Telluride has the upper hand.

Some of the standout exterior features are as follows:

  • Daytime running projector-beam LED headlights
  • 20-inch aluminum wheels
  • Rear spoiler
  • Power sunroof
  • Power liftgate
  • LED taillights

2020 Kia Telluride Safety

8.5/10

Safety features on the 2020 Kia Telluride are in abundance regardless of the trim. That’s the reason why it does so well in its crash test analysis. The NHTSA gives it a full 5-star rating in the crash test which is the highest rating possible, and the IIHS has named it a “Top Safety Pick” car. It also earned an overall rating of “Good,” which is also the highest rating from the IIHS.

Every Telluride is equipped with Adaptive Cruise control, Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring system, and active lane control. Some features are solely available on the top-tier trim SX. They are automatic high-beam headlights, a surround-view camera system with front parking sensors, Electronic Stability Control, Hill-start assist control, and Forward Collision Warning.

2020 Kia Telluride Competition

2020 Kia Telluride vs 2020 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2020 Chevy Traverse offers better dimensions both inside and outside. It has probably the best numbers in this class. It is also highly reliable and packs quite a package in terms of performance. Having compared the potent Telluride and Traverse midsize SUVs, we thought that Kia’s interior is much superior, and its 8-speed gearbox is slightly better than the Chevy.

2020 Kia Telluride vs 2020 Honda Pilot

Honda Pilot is also a highly reliable car and is almost perfect. The Kia, however, is more spacious and has better utilities, and looks better than the Pilot. A big plus point for the Kia is its price. The top tier of the Pilot will cost you around $50,000, whereas the Kia Telluride SX with the AWD option will cost you a bargain of $44,000. On the exterior looks front too, Kia certainly is the outright winner in this case.

2020 Kia Telluride Final Verdict

The 2020 Kia Telluride manages to excel in most of the categories but some downsides like average performance and below-average fuel economy might raise some red flags for a few buyers. However, for the price you’re paying for the Telluride, you couldn’t have asked for more. The 2020 Kia Telluride can rightfully claim to be one of the best crossover SUVs on the market.
