The Kia Telluride is a new entrant in the midsize SUV crossover segment, having made its debut in 2020. However, since then it took the crossover world by storm, grabbing numerous Car of the Year awards from various automobile firms. With 2022 only being Telluride’s third model year, we expect Kia to keep changes to the minimum. Its formula for success includes its eye-catching exterior styling, a feature-packed interior, and a splendid safety suite.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Talks of a hybrid powertrain have been rife, but the Telluride will probably retain the same humble naturally aspirated V6 engine, the only asset that distinguishes it from a high-end luxury cruiser. The 2022 Kia Telluride is expected to start at $33,500 and will come with its subtle combination of style, practicality, versatility, and value-for-money. The 2022 Kia Telluride aims to win over the audience against its contemporary rivals like the Honda Pilot, the Chevrolet Traverse, and its next-door Korean sibling, the Hyundai Palisade.

2022 Kia Telluride Features

Since the 2022 Kia Telluride is a carryover model you will be getting the same four trims LX, S, EX, and SX just like last year. The base LX trim is expected to start at $33,500 and will go up to $45,800 for the topmost SX trim. All the trims are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine that sends power to the front wheels while AWD is optional. Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker audio setup, simulated leather upholstery, etc.

Apart from the standard features the Kia Telluride also offers few extra features in the form of an optional package. Speaking of which the EX premium package includes 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, 2nd-row captain’s chair. SX Prestige package includes heated and ventilated second-row seats, automatic windshield wiper, premium leather upholstery. Optional Trailer package available on EX and SX includes tow hitch with trailer wiring harness connector and self-leveling rear suspension.

We Recommend

We recommend at least going for the EX trim as it adds a bigger touchscreen, hands-free liftgate, automatic climate control, ventilated seats, etc over the standard features. Plus the EX trim can be had with the optional trailer package which will be useful in case you plan for towing stuff.

Since there are no plans on board for any major redesign, we expect the Kia Telluride to be available at a starting price range of $33,500 and can go up to $45,800, a small price bump compared to the previous year’s model.

Release Date

Kia hasn’t revealed any specific date for the launch of the 2022 Telluride. However, we predict a summer or spring of 2021 release date based on previous patterns.

2022 Kia Telluride Engine and Performance

Since the 2022 Kia Telluride remains unchanged, the SUV will still be powered by its trusty 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V-6. This engine puts out 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque and all this is channeled via an 8-speed automatic gearbox to the front wheels. The initial pull from this engine and gearbox combo may be a bit laggy but gains momentum when the engine approaches the mid-rev range. For extra traction, an AWD setup is also available at an extra cost of $2,000 that comes in handy in tackling tricky road conditions.

2022 Kia Telluride SUV engine bay

With the base powertrain onboard, the Telluride goes from 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds and does the quarter-mile run in 15.4 seconds. While these may not be the fastest figures on the chart, they are adequate to propel you to highway speeds. That said, the Honda Pilot is fastest among all doing 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds followed by Hyundai Palisade that manages 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds.

Since we expect no mechanical changes on the 2022 Kia Telluride, the ride and handling would be almost similar to what we saw on the 2021 Telluride. Thus it will get a light steering which helps in piloting this big crossover very easily around the city limits. While on the highway engaging the sports mode will make things get exciting with a weighted steering and better feel and feedback. That said, the overall ride is smooth and can handle mild off-roading if the need arises.

When it comes to performance the Kia Telluride and the Hyundai Palisade share the second spot with 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque figures. The Chevrolet Traverse is the most powerful among all with 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque figures. Surprisingly, the Honda Pilot finishes higher up the speed charts despite being the least powerful among all its rivals.

2022 Kia Telluride Fuel Economy

With the base powertrain being unchanged, the Telluride is expected to retain the same EPA estimates as its 2021 predecessor. The SUV returns a fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city. On the highway, it returns 22 mpg. EPA rates its combined MPG at a decent 18.

These figures are still acceptable considering that the Telluride has a big gas-guzzling V-6 under its hood. With a large 18.8-gallon fuel tank, the Telluride manages a decent range of 376 miles in the city and 489 miles on the highways. However, the AWD Telluride sees a dip by a few digits in its MPG. The Telluride AWD will return 19/24/21 mpg of fuel economy in city/highway/combined respectively.

As for the rivals, it is very clear from the above table that the Honda Pilot is most fuel-efficient with 20/27/23 mpg of fuel economy in city/highway/combined respectively. Next comes Kia Telluride with 20/26/23 mpg of fuel economy followed by Hyundai Palisade that returns 19/26/22 mpg of fuel economy. The Chevrolet Traverse happens to be the least efficient here with 18/27/21 mpg of fuel economy figures.

2022 Kia Telluride Interior

The 2022 Kia Telluride will carry forward with the same interior design language that has brought it so much success. This means that the Telluride will still sport a sharp dashboard design with ergonomically placed controls to focus on maximum driver engagement. The materials used are of high quality with soft-touch materials dominating the dashboard and door panels.

2022 Kia Telluride SUV front seats

Like last year, passengers can choose from either an 8-seater configuration or a 7-seater configuration which is available with a second-row captain’s chair. The latter option is a family favorite as it makes it easier to access the third-row seats. The seats are also in a league of their own, with premium leather seating surfaces that add a touch of opulence.

The front seats are wide and supportive, with ample legroom and headroom to cater to individuals of all sizes. The front seats get an upgrade with heating and ventilation functionality and power adjustability with power-adjustable lumbar support on higher trims. The rear seats can be reclined and feature adequate headroom and legroom even for tall passengers. The third-row seats are also surprisingly comfortable, although stretching out your leg can be a bit of an issue here.

Trunk Capacity (cubic feet)

In terms of interior dimensions, the Kia Telluride sits right at the top of its segment. Its roomy interior and bigger passenger volume are only matched by the Chevrolet Traverse and its sibling, the Hyundai Palisade. The Traverse also beats the Telluride with a better 23 cubic feet of cargo space while the Telluride gets 21 cubic feet of cargo space. Next comes Palisade with 18 cubic feet of cargo space followed by Honda Pilot with 16.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity.

2022 Kia Telluride SUV infotainment screen

The infotainment system is also expected to remain the same for the 2022 Kia Telluride. The system includes a modern 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a 6-speaker audio system as standard. While higher trims get a bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen with 10-speaker Harman and Kardon premium sound system. Other optional gizmos include wireless charging. Highlights of the infotainment system include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • USB media port with USB charging ports
  • Six-speaker audio setup
  • Ten-speaker Harman and Kardon premium sound system (available)
  • Wireless phone charger (available)

2022 Kia Telluride Exterior

Since the 2022 Kia Telluride will be a carryover model, we expect minimal or no changes to its exteriors. That said, the Telluride’s exterior design has had a mixed share of responses from various Kia enthusiasts. Some say its bold styling, which includes a prominent tiger-nose grille and a striking tail with eye-catching visual cues is too polarizing.

2022 Kia Telluride SUV

Nevertheless, the Kia Telluride is a macho SUV in its sense, with its rugged looks, long side profile, and bold body lines. Styling elements like the chrome surround around the window line, the lower-side body panels, the front air intakes, and skid plates add muscle to the Telluride’s rugged personality. The 18-inch wheels and the larger 20-inch wheels go well with the crossover but we prefer the latter for better ride quality.

The Chevrolet Traverse is 7.4-inches longer, 1.4-inches taller, and has a 6.7-inches longer wheelbase compared to the Telluride. The Hyundai Palisade and Honda Pilot are almost similar in dimensions to the Telluride. 2022 Kia Telluride Safety

When it comes to safety, Kia leaves no stone unturned by integrating all the latest advanced safety tech available in the market in its cars. The Kia Telluride is a prime example of Kia’s excellence, as the 2021 Telluride was given five out of five stars by the NHTSA and the IIHS awarded it with the ‘Top Safety Pick’ award thanks to its ‘Superior’ crash prevention measures and the highest ‘Good’ safety rating in almost every test. We expect these ratings to continue for the 2022 Telluride as it’s a carryover model.

Kia includes a full-fledged safety suite for the 2022 Telluride, just like its 2021 predecessor. Hence, we expect a bunch of top-notch standout safety features like adaptive cruise control, Hill-start assists control, blind-spot monitors, automatic emergency braking, active lane control, seven airbags, lane departure assist, Kia’s safe exit assist, to name a few. Highlights of the safety system include:

  • Hill-start assist control
  • Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
  • Safe Exit Assist (SEA)
  • Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance with Pedestrian & Cyclist Detection (FCA)
  • Downhill brake control
  • Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist
  • Blind Spot View Monitor and Rear Cross-traffic Alert

2022 Kia Telluride Competition

2022 Kia Telluride vs 2021 Chevrolet Traverse

The Kia Telluride and the Chevy Traverse are quite evenly matched SUVs on paper with identical equipment and feature list. However, the Traverse has bragging rights in terms of higher power figures from its smaller 3.6L V6 engine. But have a peek at the interiors and the differences begin to show up, as the Telluride gets a modern and upscale interior compared to the Traverse. The Traverse on the other hand redeems itself with better cargo space than the Telluride. As a final call, the Telluride looks like a car adept with the changing trends while the Traverse is in dire need of inspiration.

2021 Chevrolet Traverse

2022 Kia Telluride vs 2021 Hyundai Palisade

These two Korean stalwarts are almost identical mechanically and as a package. However, look closely and you may notice some fundamental differences between the two. For starters, the Telluride offers better fuel economy than the Palisade. The Telluride also offers more cargo space behind its 3rd-row of seats. The design language used in the interiors also highlights a major difference between these two.

2021 Hyundai Palisade

The overall picture is clear- if you want to chauffeur your family around within a luxurious package, the Palisade is the right choice. However, if you desire a more youthful and rugged vehicle that is bang on the buck, the Telluride is the one that meets your requirements.

2022 Kia Telluride vs 2021 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot is a splendid crossover that gets a smaller engine and puts out smaller performance figures. But it is quicker in a 0-60 mph or quarter-mile run compared to the Telluride. Not only this the Pilot has better fuel economy than the Telluride. But when you come to interior and cargo space the Telluride takes the lead against the Pilot.

2021 Honda Pilot

That said, both the crossover are similarly priced and except for better performance and fuel efficiency the Honda Pilot is almost similar to the Kia Telluride.

2022 Kia Telluride Final Verdict

The 2022 Kia Telluride is packed with all the latest tech features and has an equally distinctive style to book its place among the top crossover SUVs in the market. The Telluride moves forward with no major changes for 2022, as the current lineup of trims and features has already earned rave reviews from its audience.

Its splendid interior space and cargo versatility make it a top choice for modern families. Although Kia has been tight-lipped about the inclusion of a hybrid powertrain, we believe its current V-6 powertrain is potent and efficient enough for families. With the right mix of features, practicality, and performance, the Kia Telluride tries to offer everything that too at a bargain price of below $34,000.
