What if the old saga is brought to you with an unabashed intensity, the feeling of nostalgia is all we are going to be circumscribed with. This is indeed true for the upcoming 2022 Land Rover Defender 90 which will have the touch of old-school as well as the exhilaration of this changing scenario. Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The package availability and additional extension may let you see its price soaring sky-high but it is no less than a value investment altogether. Marching against the stream of the Toyota 4 Runner TRD Pro, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Dodge Durango means a tough struggle down the lane for it but it is reasonably loaded to tackle that.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 SUV Features

The 2022 Land Rover Defender 90 is as exemplary as it has ever been in its trim hierarchy. 5 major formats namely the Base, X-Dynamic S, X, V8, and the V8 Carpathian Edition have been adorned with too many which give an ironic situation of having myriads of choices and the difficulty in finalizing one.

In terms of the offer, there are a few important features which are constant throughout the structure and those include the names of the HomeLink Garage Door Opener, Trailer Stability Assist, EPAS, and Rear ISOFIX. But then we start to see differentiation in the spec-sheet as the standard Terrain Response in the Base trim evolves to Terrain Response 2 in the X trim which finally mutates into Configurable Terrain Response in the Carpathian Edition.

Although safety is enriched right from the base trim with the Blindspot Assist, Roll Stability Control, and Cornering Brake Control yet the V8 trim has some uniqueness with its exclusive Adaptive Cruise Control. Not just that, the eldest among all does get the All-Terrain Progress Control and Adaptive dynamics especially for itself which make it a far better off-roading machinery with an aspect to test the limits.

The base deficiency does not end at the exterior dimensions only, rather continues with no availability of the Interactive Driver Display and the lower-tier flexing in the seats arranged inside the cabin. On the whole, except for the base, all the other trims of the Defender 90 are separate characters with their own identity which are much appreciated and cherished.

Which Trim should you buy?

As mentioned above, one may have a long list to choose from because of which the task gets even more complicated. Since it is evident that price can go way beyond one’s reach and affordability which brings us to enlist all the necessary features which will cast convenience with high values within a reasonable tag. And in that matter, nothing suits better than the X-Dynamic S as it gets a melange of all the comfort and performance.

The 3.0L P400 I-6 is more powerful and has more prospects in the payload as well. A higher permutation in adjustability and space management flexibility is an added advantage. Interior tech-end and involvement are fairly more than required for one’s engagement. Therefore, skip the analysis and own the X-Dynamics.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 Release Date

The summer is going to be hotter and more fun as the 2022 Land Rover Defender 90 will be available next door only. Though no specific date has not been announced officially owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ongoing recovery phase ensures that by mid-summer we may be able to test drive or even own the all-new machinery from the Land Rover.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 Land Rover Defender 90 does not just house technology-bound features but also engine variants that are worth mentioning. The primitive one in the line-up is the 2.0 L Turbo I-4 which is capable of producing the power of 296 hp @ 5500 rpm and a peak torque of 295 lb-ft @ 1500 rpm. This gets upgraded to 395 hp and 406 lb-ft respectively with the 3.0L P400 I-6 which has kept the Base format devoid of itself and comes under the hood of X and X-Dynamic trims.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 2.0L Engine

In the end, cometh most advanced 5.0L Supercharged V8 with its thrust of 518 hp and 625 lb-ft that makes it a real performance as well as towing demon among all the siblings. Moreover, the power is transferred to axles via an 8-Speed Automatic transmission which has been paired with the AWD layout.

High towing capacity without compromising the performance curve is what makes the Land Rover Defender 90 a must one to own. The turbo pack gives it wings to accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill within 5.7 seconds beating all the rivals by more than a second which is fairly a big deal as per segment.

We map the same roots in the quarter-mile dragging as well where it covers the feat in 14.2 seconds. The closest to these figures is that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee with 6.7 and 15.2 seconds respectively but it has a long way to go to catch up to the former. The other rivals are also way behind the aforementioned. Thus, the price tag and corresponding performance defend Defender 90.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 SUV Fuel Economy

Generally, it is believed that if you champion performance, you have to let go of fuel economy but that is not the case here. The Land Rover Defender 90 does offer parallel returns to a large extent with 18 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highways, and an overall mileage of 19 mpg. Even the range one musters is pretty decent with a reading of more than 490 miles in ideal situations in single fueling of a 23.4-gallon fuel tank. The figures might seem to follow a downward trajectory with the bigger variants but that is not significantly low, therefore, it is no concern. As the figures are not the best, it is important to view them holistically considering the towing capacity and other aspects.

As far as competition is concerned, though the Defender 90 might have a manageable figure yet it misses out to clinch the top position as the rivals like the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee can hit a mark of more than 600 miles which is around 110 miles more than the former. Part of the reasons can be attributed to slightly better returns and a larger fuel tank altogether. But having more than 450 miles range is in itself sufficient for you, hence, it should not impede or stain the Defender 90 practicality.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 SUV Interior

The 2022 Land Rover Defender 90 retains the charm of comfort and convenience with its high cushioning seats which are semi-powered in the lower trims while a complete suite of heating and cooling function along with mutation in its adjustability in the higher trims.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 Dashboard

The seat accents go through a transition from Ebony Fabric in the Base trim to Ebony Windsor leather and Dinamica suede cloth in the Carpathian Edition. The narration is quite the same for the temperature regulation as the shift takes from the 2-zone to 3-zone climate control as we move up the trim with an exclusive Cabin Air Ionisation and PM2.5 filter for the V8 Variants. Even the touch on the steering wheel feels premium with either Leatherette or Suedecloth wrapping.

The capacity to seat 5, in general, can be increased to 6 in the all-new Land Rover Defender 90 with decent spaciousness in both rows. The same is also true for its rivals as well except for the Toyota 4 Runner TRD Pro as the rear is a little cramped up. But it is then covered up by its class-leading cargo capacity of 46.3 cubic feet. The Land Rover, however, struggles exceptionally in that department having a trunk volume of mere 15.6 cubic feet. The leader of the pack is the Dodge Durango which has the most balanced cabin with an equivalent satisfying cargo volume and that too with impressive interior trims inside. So, we would keep it a little ahead of others in this category. Some of the interior features in the 2022 Land Rover Defender 90 are:

  • Robustec Console Finisher
  • Two-zone Climate Control
  • Ebony Morzine Headlining
  • Cabin Air Ionization
  • Air Quality Sensor

How intuitive is the 2022 Land Rover Defender 90’s infotainment unit?

It is a 12.3" high-definition Interactive Driver Display with which we begin the description of this heavily armed SUV. Although the base trim lacks this engagement and some other exciting features, it is reasonable to skip it for now and focus on the trims onwards. The Meridian Sound System fills up the place for your musical rhythms and the Click and Go Integrated Base Unit manages the egalitarian approach for its rear passengers.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 Infotainment System

The standard features which have been incorporated across all the trims are SiriusXM Satellite Radio, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It also gets a meticulous Head-up Display from X trim onwards. It is one of the sectors because of which the Defender has been able to be among the favorites. Some of the infotainment features in the 2022 Land Rover Defender 90 are:

  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Apple CarPlay
  • HD Radio
  • 12.3" high-definition Interactive Driver Display
  • Click and Go Integrated Base Unit
  • Meridian Sound System

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 SUV Exterior

Land Rover has always been one of the most dynamic and appealing worthy SUVs and that design perspective has become a sort of benchmark which is inspiring the next-gen sculptors. The Land Rover Defender 90 appears as if it is staring at you which further enhances with the Satin Ceres Silver Grille Bar and Badging.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 Three Quarter View

The variations ranging from the primitive 18", Gloss White, Steel Wheels to the highest possible 22", 5 spoke, Satin Dark Grey Wheels are as muscular as the silhouette. The curvature does have old-school imagery but that is what makes it stand apart from the crowd. Not just that, it even gets a pair of rails on the top with a sliding panoramic roof as per trim strata.

Handling such body style is directly proportional to one’s calculations to curb oversizing. And probably there might be a chance we may realize why the old-school philosophy has been brought into introduction in the Defender 90. The most compact and agile among the rivals might not be assistive in its cargo volume but it is a gem when subjected to off-roading and tough terrains.

The prowess becomes multiplicative as we mention the availability of Terrain Response at its disposal. The rivals on the other hand are also impressive despite being bigger than the former but they will still lag behind the Defender 90 for now. Some of the exterior features in the 2022 Land Rover Defender 90 are:

  • 22", 5 spoke, Satin Dark Grey Wheels
  • Roof Rails
  • Satin Ceres Silver Grille Bar
  • Sliding Panoramic Roof
  • Gloss Finish
  • LED Headlights

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 SUV Safety

The Land Rover Defender 90 is exceptionally alarm and alert with its high-valued safety package which includes the likes of the Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keep Assist, and Rear Traffic Monitor. The realm has been given the privilege to own the in-built ability to keep track of its traction and rollover with Dynamic Stability Control and Roll Stability Control respectively.

Not just individually but it can even maintain the straight-line rectilinear of the trailer attached with the Trailer Stability Assist. Apart from mobility criterion, one also gets the All-Terrain Progress Control and Adaptive Dynamics in the higher trim in conjunction with the Electronic Air Suspension that adds another dimension to its favoritism for its off-roading. Some of the features are:

  • Dynamic Stability Control
  • Roll Stability Control
  • Blind Spot Assist
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Rear Traffic Monitor
  • Adaptive Dynamics
  • Adaptive Cruise Control

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 SUV Competition

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 vs. 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeep has been consistent with its introduction and so does the Land Rover but this time we may see a little up and down as the latter is more inspiring both on the inside and on the outside. Compact design with exceptional stability while off-roading, the Defender 90 is by far one of a kind in this arena. Not just that, the sound amplification and interaction within the ambiance are also a cornerstone in the segment. The Grand Cherokee does manage to have better cargo volume and range coverage but that is not at all enough to outshine the overall appeal of the Defender 90 with its inherent accents and performance dynamics.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 vs. 2021 Toyota 4 Runner TRD Pro

Probably one of the closest rivals among all is the Toyota 4 Runner TRD Pro with its high-end towing capacity and control over rough terrain yet it has to be placed behind the Land Rover Defender 90 as it comes with the same level of agility and handling, if not better, in conjunction with better performance curve, peak range, and interior tech superiority. It is more appealing with its silhouette and those adaptive dynamics on offer are just out of this world. Therefore, the spring balance weighs more when the Defender 90 emblem is tagged to the hook.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 vs. 2021 Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango is surely a practical SUV with an amazing exterior outfit and accents inside the cabin. High on the range, mileage, and space management, it might look like a fancy option to own until you put it against the offers of what's there in the Land Rover Defender 90. The premium and exotic feel even in the Base trim is at par with the former. The display and sound system are as impressive as its off-roading nudge. The dynamics pattern with those Electronic Air Suspension and EPAS paint the portrait and give it the edge over the rival. Thus, we would prefer the Land Rover Defender 90 for our commuting.

2022 Land Rover Defender 90 SUV Final Verdict

The analysis done throughout is a testament that there might be rivals who are impressive in one or two domains but it is the Defender 90 which is an overall package marking a benchmark in almost all the categories. Better trade-offs throughout the spec-sheet and price increment as per those trade-offs define the real threat it poses to all those who have been leading this market for years. It is by far the first pick in the upcoming year.
