Land Rover is known for making do-it-all cars and the Defender is a prime example of it. Introduced in the 1950s, it made a name for itself with its staggering off-road ability. In its modern avatar, it comes with the same Land Rover DNA and offers many advanced features. It comes in two body styles- the two-door 90 and four-door 110. Both the body styles come with the standard all-wheel-drive configurations.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Land Rover Defender X-Dynamic 90 trim will be available in three sub-trims, namely the S, SE, and HSE. The price starts at $59,500 for the S trim and goes up to $69,600 for the HSE trim excluding additional charges. The two-door 90 body style looks cool but the four-door version offers better practicality. It will face competition from the likes of Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Bronco, and Toyota 4Runner.

We Recommend

We believe that the X-Dynamic SE trim makes more sense as it is about $4500 cheaper than the higher trim and comes with pretty much everything you could ask for. It gets many features like a premium LED headlight with self-leveling functionality, LED fog lamps, larger 20-inch alloy wheels, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with memory function, and many more. Some optional accessory packages like Urban, Adventure, Explorer, and Country offer many desirable features as under:

  • Explorer Pack: It includes exterior side-mounted gear carrier, expedition roof rack, raised air intake, wheel arch protection, matt black hood decal, spare wheel cover, front expedition protection system, etc.
  • Adventure Pack: It includes an integrated air compressor, portable rinse system, seat backpack, ‘A’ frame protection bar, exterior side-mounted gear carrier, etc.
  • Country Pack: It includes full-height load partition, wheel arch protection, portable rinse system, bright rear scuff plate, front and rear mud flaps, etc.
  • Urban Pack: It includes bright metal pedals, spare wheel cover, front under the shield, spare wheel cover, bright rear scuff plate, wheel options, bright side tubes, fixed side steps, etc.

2022 Land Rover Defender X-Dynamic 90 Release Date

As the official specifications and prices are available on the official Land Rover website. So, we expect the deliveries of the 2022 model to start early next year.

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 Land Rover X-Dynamic 90 is equipped with an Ingenium 3.0L inline-6 twin-scroll turbocharged engine and comes with a 48-V mild-hybrid system. It is also equipped with an electric supercharger for an additional e-boost whenever required. The engine produces about 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission and it offers precise shifts in different situations.

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 3.0L Engine

The power is delivered to all four wheels as standard. As the P-400 powertrain is the same as the 2021 model, we expect the X-Dynamic 90 to do a 0-60 mph sprint in about 5.7 seconds and a quarter-mile drag is done in about 14.4 seconds. It offers a good towing capacity of 7716 pounds and can achieve a top speed of 119 mph. The Defender offers superior off-road compatibility

The Defender comes with a smaller engine and yet it offers the best performance of the lot. The Toyota 4Runner comes with the largest engine in the comparison but its acceleration figures say a different story. It comes with a naturally aspirated and old engine design but offers tremendous reliability. The Ford Bronco comes second with respect to its performance, followed by Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 SUV Fuel Economy

The 2022 Defender X-Dynamic is based on the 2021 model and offers similar fuel efficiency as well. But the efficiency figures are nothing to boast about and just about acceptable for a vehicle of its class. It offers 17 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg in mixed driving conditions. With a fuel tank of 23.4 gallons, it can travel up to 398 miles in the city, 515 miles on the highway, and 445 miles in combined conditions.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is equipped with a large fuel tank of 24.6 gallons and offers a better fuel economy of 21 mpg in combined conditions as well. Obviously, it blows away the competition in the range battle. The Ford Bronco offers the least range of just 287 miles, thanks to its smaller fuel tank of 16.9 gallons and less fuel efficiency of 17 mpg in combined conditions The 4Runner is equipped with a reasonably large fuel tank of 17.5 gallons but owing to less fuel efficiency of 17.5 mpg in mixed conditions, it loses out in the range battle.

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 SUV Interior

The interior of the 2022 Defender will be similar to the outgoing model and is a perfect mix of practicality and premium. The dashboard is quite functional rather than being fancy. Even the magnesium beam that runs along the entire width of the dashboard is used for improving structural strength. The touchscreen display sits exactly on the center stack and rectangular air vents are placed just above it. The shifter lever and climate control buttons are located on a trapezoidal section that is extended away from the dashboard.

Hence, the saved space on the center console can be used for an optional jump seat. The front seats are 12-way power-adjustable and come with a memory function. It also comes with a dual-zone climate control system and seats are trimmed in leather with Robustec ribbon accents on them. The HSE trim comes with heated and ventilated seats trimmed in Windsor leather. The cargo capacity of just 15.6 cu-ft is less when compared to some of its rivals but for its compact wheelbase that’s what you get. However, you can fold the rear seats to extend the cargo capacity.

All the SUVs except the Bronco offer a seating capacity of five passengers. The Toyota 4Runner offers the best cargo capacity in comparison and clearly blows away the competition. It is followed by Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Bronco, and Defender. The Defender comes with the least cargo capacity of just 15.6 cu-ft and is the least practical of all. However, 4Runner lacks good legroom across the second row. The Grand Cherokee, Defender, and Bronco offer better legroom than it. Some of the standout interior features of the Defender are:

  • Illuminated metal treadplates with “Defender” script
  • Ebony Morzine headlining
  • Dual-zone climate control system
  • 40:20:40 Fixed Rear Seats
  • 12-way power-adjustable front seats with memory function
  • Eiger grey door handle finish (SE trim)
  • Power-assisted steering column adjustment (SE trim and above)
  • Heated and Ventilated front seats (HSE trim)

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Like the 2021 model, the 2022 Defender will be equipped with a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen display. It will be powered by Land Rover’s Pivi Pro user interface which is easy to use. It also offers an integrated navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, wireless charging, 4G LTE hotspot.

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 Infotainment System

For a great musical experience, it is equipped with Meridian’s 14-speaker music system plus a subwoofer for an astounding output of 700W. The lower S trim gets only 6-speakers for a satisfactory musical experience. For your smartphone connectivity, you get access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You will also get SiriusXM satellite radio as standard. Some of the standout infotainment features of the Defender are:

  • Pivi Pro
  • 10-inch touchscreen display
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Meridian premium audio system (SE and HSE trim)

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 SUV Exterior

The 2022 Land Rover Defender X-Dynamic 90 retains the retro look of the Defender with a touch of modernity. The front fascia imbibes two rectangular LED headlamps with LED DRLs in a semi-circle design. The front grille is made in such a way that looks like a part of the bumper itself and gives it a rugged look. The “Defender” logo sits right above the grille on the hood and proudly narrates its off-roading saga.

The side profile is as boxy as it can get and ensures sufficient headroom in the cabin. The rear profile is minimalistic with two vertical LED tail lamps and a spare tire mounted on the tailgate gives it an off-road-ready look. Some optional accessory packages like Urban, Adventure, Explorer, and Country offer many additional features to ramp up the defender with much-needed aesthetic and functional updates.

The Defender sits on a shorter wheelbase and is also the most compact SUV of the lot considering its length. A shorter wheelbase helps with maneuverability and a shorter turning radius as well, making parking in tight spots much easier. The Defender X-Dynamic 90 offers a decent ground clearance but is no match to 4Runner and Bronco’s ground clearance.

Higher ground clearance is necessary for better and safe off-roading performance. The Defender is also wider and taller than the rest of the SUVs. The 4Runner is the longest SUV and the Grand Cherokee sits on the longest wheelbase. A longer wheelbase helps with high-speed stability on highways. Some of the standout exterior features of the Defender are:

  • LED headlights with automatic leveling
  • “X-Dynamic” badge
  • Silicon silver exterior accents
  • Front fog lights (SE and HSE)
  • Opening panoramic sunroof (HSE)
  • Black exposed rear recovery eyes
  • Heated, electric, power-fold mirrors with memory

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 SUV Safety

Like any other Land Rover SUV, the 2022 Defender X-Dynamic 90 is also bound to be safe. The NHTSA and the IIHS have not rated the new model and even the 2021 model for its safety quotient. However, Land Rover Defender comes with many features like front, side, and curtain airbags, 3D surround-view camera, side-impact beams, adaptive cruise control, and many more as standard. Also looking at the history of Land Rover, the new Defender will be good with respect to safety. Some of the standout exterior features of the Defender are:

  • 360° Parking Aid
  • Wade sensing
  • Emergency braking
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Lane keep assist
  • Driver condition monitor
  • Clear exit monitor

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 SUV Competition

2022Land Rover X-Dynamic 90 V/S 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

The Land Rover Defender offers better performance than the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It also offers a more comfortable and luxurious experience inside the cabin as compared to the Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee is considerably less expensive than the Defender and it offers better practicality in terms of higher cargo capacity and interior space as well. It is also more fuel-efficient than the Defender.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Three Quarter View

2022Land Rover X-Dynamic 90 V/S 2022 Ford Bronco First Edition

The Ford Bronco is a very capable off-roader and a direct challenger to the Defender. The Defender offers better performance than the Bronco and is also more fuel-efficient than it. The Bronco offers better cargo capacity than the Defender and looks modern as well. The Bronco also comes with class-leading ground clearance, making it more off-road compatible than any other SUV. But it is equipped with a smaller fuel tank and hence offers less range than the Defender.

2022 Ford Bronco First Edition Three Quarter View

2022Land Rover X-Dynamic 90 V/S 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

The Toyota 4Runner is an old-school offroader not just by design but mechanically too. It is equipped with an aging powertrain which is no match to the Defender’s more advanced and efficient powertrain which offers great performance too. However, the 4Runner is priced lesser than the Defender and offers a very good off-road experience. Also, the reliability factor is quite high with its tried and tested drivetrain.

2022 Land Rover Defender X Dynamic 90 SUV Final Verdict

The 2022 Defender X-Dynamic 90 is definitely one of the SUVs you should be looking at, considering its performance, off-road ability, and legendary Land Rover tag. It also offers a good infotainment system experience and offers many safety features as standard. But it’s not the perfect SUV for everyone. It offers less fuel efficiency than some of its rivals and is short on cargo capacity too. Also, added customization options might just blow your bank. Some competitors offer good customizations at a much lesser price. Overall, we recommend this SUV to you if you are a Land Rover enthusiast, and the extra cash you splurge for it doesn’t bother you.
