2019 Land Rover Discovery Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

This year, the Discovery has shed its 'brick on wheels' attire and it's pretty smooth and powerful. Since its inception, nobody doubted its off-road capabilities. In the latest model, the Land Rover Discovery is just like a modern SUV that offers pleasant exterior and interior appeal.

Most of the 2019 Land Rover Discovery trim levels get a 3-liter supercharged V6 engine that makes it do a zero to 60mph sprint in 7.7 seconds. The optional diesel powertrain is also useful in many ways. Undoubtedly, the 2019 Discovery is heavy but it drives smooth.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial March 6, 2019

There are no crash test data for the current model but all the Discovery models come fitted with parking sensors. The $52,600 base trim level gets a fair amount of standard features but we’d look out for the HSE trim as it offers better front seats and premium audio system.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Engine

“The 2019 Discovery delivers impressive performance, on and off road.” - carconnection

Engine and Transmission

The engine options available with the 2019 Discovery includes a 3-liter Gasoline engine with 340 hp, 3-liter diesel engine with 254 hp and 2-liter turbo Gasoline engine with 237 hp. The V6 is paired with an effective 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 2-liter engine sometimes feels numb and is unable to generate much torque.

Acceleration

The acceleration offered by the Discovery is interesting even when you put light pedal. The engine works best inclined with the 8-speed automatic to ignore the noise felt outside. The acceleration is decent for a 3-row SUV. The Discovery posts 7.8 seconds in 0 to 60 MPH.

However, it feels slower than most of the rivals as they are able to achieve the same acceleration in less than 7 seconds.

Ride and Handling

With the available optional air suspension system, the SUV feels delight on rough pavements. The car manages to devour bad patterns on the road with great handling. You’ll experience the good speed even on sharp turns. The road dynamics matched best to the rivals in the segment.

Braking

The brakes on the SUV sports a 14.3-inch rotor in the front and a 13.8-inch rotor on the rear. The car is well balanced and never lets you loose the grip. The shifting momentum may appear to be unsettling but the SUV manages to get through it nicely. The SUV takes 123 feet to stop from a 60 MPH. Comparatively, this is not impressive while looking at the stats provided the competitors.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Fuel Economy

The Discovery SE return a fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg combined. The rivals, on the other hand, offer similar stats except for the Toyota Land Cruiser that turns out to be a thirsty SUV.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Interior

7.5/10

“The 2019 Discovery barely hints at its ability inside. It’s a comfortable family vehicle with excellent front seats, good second-row seats, lots of room for cargo, and a well-trimmed interior.” - thecarconnection

Seats and Comfort

There’s plenty of headroom inside the SUV. The 2019 Discovery never hides its tall boy stance. The seats are comfy and one the best across the segment. For a prospective buyer, the seats equipped with leather surfaces, memory option, heating, and ventilation, can impress them anyways.

Infotainment

A 10 inch infotainment touch screen is standard across all the available trims. The scree in sharp and responsive with right brightness and color. The MMI fails to impress as it feel laggy at times and the tough takes a longer time to respond. We found some of the common connectivity features like Android Connect and Apple CarPlay missing from the board.

Cargo Capacity

You get ample cargo space with the new Discovery SUV. The boot is big enough to accommodate your big luggage for long trips. The power liftgate eases your way to add luggage in the rear. The SUV features 43.5 inches behind the second-row seat, keeping the rivals at exclamation.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Exterior

“The Discovery’s exterior shuns the blocky SUV design long associated with classic Land Rover SUVs, becoming softer and more rounded.” – Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

The Discovery SUV is a big SUV with a curb weight of 4751 lbs. With its segment biggest width of 81.6 inches and height of 73 inches, the Discovery never tries to hide away from its large size image. The big five-spoke wheels add extra magnification to the overall character of the SUV. The blackened exterior enhances the exterior look throughout the body. In comparison to the rivals, the Audi Q7 surpasses the dimensions of the Discovery SUV. In terms of the ground clearance, the Ford Expedition leads the charge by offering a distance of 9.8 inches.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Competition

Land Rover Discovery VS Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 gives a tough rivalry to the Discovery SUV. It has a sturdy and solid build quality. The infotainment is easy and responsive unlike the one we found on the Discovery. Like always, the Audi Virtual Cockpit is a gem to have in the car.

However, the Audi has compromised the boot space to a large extent. The off-road capability also lags behind. Somewhere, the Land Rovers seems to have dome some justice to the Discovery by improving its performance.

Land Rover Discovery VS Volvo XC90

The inline 4 cylinder engine with the Volvo XC90 is powerful but doesn’t feel like deliverable at times. However, the third-row seat offers generous spacing in the XC90. The Discovery wins here over the off-road potential. The Discovery is always a better pick against the Volvo XC90.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Final Verdict

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery is similar to the 2018 iteration. Like last year, the car comes with minor updates. Moreover, we loved the addition of extra features on the safety front. Some of the buyers won’t mind the slight price hike for this year after all the off-roading capability of the SUV still looks unmatched. It is one of the best family SUVs to have.
