Discovery is a potent off-roader from Land Rover and in some ways, a “cheaper” alternative to the Range Rover. With exciting looks and powerful engine options, the 2018 Discovery is made for those who want to discover the wild and unknown thanks to its off-roading capabilities. It comes with both a gasoline as well as a diesel option, and you can either choose between more performance or more efficiency.

Being a Land Rover, it is obviously quite luxurious. But it also offers decent practicality. However, it is not very reliable and one of the primary reasons why it can’t be considered on top of the class. 2018 Discovery comes in three distinct trims and the pricing starts off at $53,085. It competes against the likes of Volvo XC90, Audi Q7 and BMW X5.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Interior Design, Dimensions, and Comfort

Being a Land Rover, you can expect a premium and attractive interior design and the Discovery comes with just that. The dashboard is ergonomic as well as utilitarian. The buttons and dials are all within easy reach of the driver. Overall, we think the design fits quite well with the purpose the Discovery is built for – off-roading adventures in a luxury family SUV. The choices of materials are great as well. The base trim comes with grained leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, metal-look interior accents, and black interior trim. The HSE comes with the same grained leather seats, but it upgrades to a genuine wood instrument panel and a genuine wood door insert panel. The HSE Luxury adds a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstered dashboard, leather door trim inserts and genuine wood interior trim. It also includes Windsor leather seat trim with contrast micro piping. As we said, the choices of materials are excellent and Land Rover never disappoints with quality. The durability, however, is a whole different topic.

Now, coming to the seats, the base SE trim includes 8-way power-adjustable Style 2 driver’s and passenger’s seats with a manual tilt and telescoping steering column. The HSE upgrades to Style 3 front seats including power lumbar support. It also adds a power tilt and telescoping steering column. Finally, the HSE Luxury adds heated 16-way Style 4 power-adjustable front seats with memory. It also includes 4-way power lumbar support. The seats are very comfortable with good bolstering and excellent support. As you know, the Discovery has seating for 7 in three rows, but the third row is only available in the HSE Luxury trim. The front row is obviously spacious, and so is the second row. The same cannot be said for the third row, however.

Looking at the above table, it is clear that both the front and the middle rows are spacious in all of these SUVs, as is to be expected. However, the third row is cramped. And Discovery does a surprisingly good job of offering the most space in the third row, while the likes of the Q7 and MDX are extremely cramped. Average-sized adults could fit in the Discovery, but not in the Q7 and MDX for more than a minute.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Infotainment

2018 Land Rover Discovery comes equipped with a 10” touchscreen display in the center of the dashboard and it runs on the InControl Touch Pro Navigation system. All three trims get the same touchscreen display, albeit with more features as you move up the trim ladder. The system is decent and intuitive. It is responsive, but it is certainly not the best in business. Now, coming to the features, the SE trim enjoys navigation, InControl Pro services, InControl remote premium and wi-fi hotspot, AM/FM radio, satellite radio, voice activation, Bluetooth, Real-Time Traffic Display, and other minor features.

The HSE adds an in-dash mounted CD player, external memory control with 10GB internal memory, digital signal processor, automatic equalizer, SiriusXM radio and HD radio. The HSE Luxury trim comes with the same features, but it also includes a 15-speaker Meridian Surround Sound System for the best music experience. Speaking of audio, the base trim comes with a 10-speaker Land Rover Enhanced Sound System while the HSE comes with a 380W 11-speaker Meridian Sound System.

Key Infotainment Features

  • 10” touchscreen display
  • InControl Touch Pro Navigation
  • Pro services and Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • HD radio
  • Real-Time Traffic Display
  • 15-speaker Meridian sound system

2018 Land Rover Discovery Cargo Capacity

2018 Discovery, with all of its three rows up in the HSE Luxury trim, gets a measly 9.1 cubes of cargo storage. This is almost good for nothing except a few small items and perhaps a grocery bag. With the third row down, the cargo capacity increases to 40.2 cubes in the HSE Luxury and 43.5 cubes in other trims. That is a significant upgrade which should be good enough for most of your needs. With the second row down too, the HSE Luxury gets 85 cubes of storage, while the other trims get an even more cavernous 88.3 cubes of storage.

As you can see, the cargo capacity of the Discovery is the worst when all of the three rows are up, as compared to the other SUVs. However, with all the seats, only the MDX offers more space than the Discovery. The other two offer decent standard cargo space but are not exactly spacious in front of its rivals when you fold down the seats.

Additional Interior Storage Spaces

Inside, you will find all the usual storage spaces – a decently-sized glovebox, small storage cubbies in the center console, a center console storage bin, cupholders, door bins, and a few other small cubbies.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Creature Comforts

The base trim includes Style 2 seats with 8-way power-adjustable front seats, grained leather seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, manual tilt and telescoping steering column, proximity cargo access, dual-zone automatic climate control, InControl protect tracker system, etc. The HSE comes with a power tilt and telescoping steering column, a leather steering wheel with auto tilt-away, remote keyless entry, genuine wood instrument panel, and Style 3 seats with power lumbar support.

The HSE Luxury includes heated Style 4 seats with 16-way power adjustability including 4-way power lumbar support, Windsor leather seat trim with contrast micro piping, leather upholstered dashboard, heated steering wheel, and other premium upgrades.

Verdict

2018 Discovery is certainly a pretty premium, opulent and appealing vehicle for those who want to enjoy the luxury but also want to go on an adventure off the beaten path. The choices of materials are excellent and the list of standard features is also impressive. Practicality is also excellent. Too bad the SUV isn’t reliable and on top of the already high initial cost, you might have to spend more on maintenance. Nevertheless, it is still a great option when it comes to interior.
