If Speed, comfort, and thrust to tow are among a few of the assets that you are looking for, then SUVs can be a solution for your chaotic state of mind. The Bodystyle might be sometimes not so attractive but multitasking is its old age glory. The Land Rover Discovery aims to offer this market one such performer that can be soothing to your glance and be compliant with its inherent purpose-orientation.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Available in three major trims, its price starts at $53,900 for the S trim and can be as costly as $68,900 for the top-tier trim without any additional package. The multi-facets of this machinery have to go straight against the favorites like the BMW X5, Chevrolet Tahoe, and the Jaguar F-Pace

The Land Rover Discovery is available in three trims namely the S, R-Dynamic S, and the R-Dynamic HSE. The base trim gets almost all the major safety hacks like Cruise Control, Blind Spot Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition but lacks the 3D Surround Camera which begins from the R-Dynamic S. The HSE gets an edge over the lower trims with its exclusive Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack. Both the S and R-Dynamic S get Configurable Terrain Response Unit but the  R-Dynamic HSE gets an exclusive Active Rear Locking Differential.

The Adaptive Speed Limiter has been kept consistent across all the trims. The 11.4” Touchscreen and Dynamic Volume Control come as a standard as well. It is quite disappointing that the trim has been kept devoid of the Meridian Surround Sound System as an inherent character at such a price tag but that can be availed of with an extra $1250. The unique Activity Key is also available for the one who fascinates the remote operations and that is available at an extra budget of $410.

Which Trim should you buy in the 2021 Land Rover Discovery?

The Land Rover Discovery looks very fancy in many regards but if one has to be cost-efficient then it would be wise to choose the base variant S only as it has almost all the features that are necessary for a quality and safe ride. The HSE can be enticing for off-road enthusiasts with its additional packages but that comes at a hefty price tag. Moreover, the base S lacks few infotainment upgrades which can be accessed with extra bucks. Hence, the S trim is a better option to invest in.

Engine and Performance

The Land Rover Discovery gets a mixed bag of engine variants as per trim level. A P300 I-4 engine for the base S and R-Dynamic S along with a much more powerful one, the P360 I-6 for the R-Dynamic S and R-Dynamic HSE. The Discovery can hit the 0-60 mph mark within 6.9 seconds and can cover a quarter-mile in 16.1 seconds on the clock. This is all achievable, partly due to the 295 lb-ft of torque @ 1500 RPMs and 296 hp @ 5500 RPMs in conjugation with an 8-Speed Automatic in a 4WD layout. The figures can go high up to 355 hp and 369 lb-ft without any decrement in the economy in the P360.

The powertrain of the Discovery is underwhelming when it goes head to head against the X5 & Tahoe. The higher capacity and engine configuration can be reasoned for that. Among all the BMW X5 has the most dominant nature in all the parameters, be it a straight run-off or a pick-up. Another important observation is the engine capacity for the Tahoe is invariably high which becomes reliable in its fuel economy.

How well does the 2021 Land Rover Discovery handle?

You can be relaxed inside the cabin with a 4WD at work which ensures maximum grip. The Adaptive dynamics unit and Electronic Air Suspension which can adjust height automatically, are at the disposal which allows for overall easy handling with a responsive input at the steering.

2021 Land Rover Discovery SUV brake rotor

The real chasm comes with the HSE as it gets an All-Terrain Progress Control as an additional package which improves the balancing in all sorts of curvatures. The regenerative braking unit also improves the drive quality which not only gets it to a halt but also helps in the trickle charging.

2021 Land Rover Discovery Braking Performance

The braking system of the Discovery is impressively loaded with pairs of 13.8” in the front and rear with an all 4-wheel ABS. The 4865 lbs ask for an Emergency Braking kit and Cornering Brake Control. Further extending the braking virtues include the addition of the Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake pad wear indicator. The complete package is simply insurance of high-quality braking performance irrespective of the unavailability of the braking distance.

As per data, most of the braking distance travels are not available. Therefore, it leaves the column without the desired conclusion. But one may notice an important fact that the Tahoe has unjustified huge rotors among the competitors. It is true that it has got spacing that tends to give it a dimensional disadvantage yet others’ dimensional aspect ratio will be expository that these rotors can be downsized.

Fuel Economy

A reliable powertrain may be underpowered in performance but that can make up for it in its fuel economy. The Discovery has the propensity to give you decent coverage with 19 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highways, and 21 mpg overall. With one of the biggest fuel tanks in the segment, it can travel as much as 517 miles in an ideal situation. The turbocharged unit compresses the intake air and thereby increases the oxygen concentration per burst which in return gives you a fair mileage with an almost parallel performance curve.

Range (City/Highway/Combined, in Miles)

One won’t take more than a fraction of a second to comprehend that the BMW X5 is a gem of a class in this unit as well. It has got a superior nudge in performance with an exemplary fuel economy. Even the range is more than required to keep the refueling out of the scenario. As impractical as it can be is the Tahoe which can give you serious blows with its depressing figures. The high capacity and that to V8 takes on the performance but simply disregards the urge for the fuel economy.

The Land Rover Discovery is a 7-seater that comes with different feels at different price tags. Beginning with the base S, it gets the pairs of Acorn/Light Oyster grained leather-trim seats as a standard. This is further upgraded to the Ebony Windsor leather seats in the HSE variant. Not just that, one has multiplicative finishers like the Titanium Mesh and Shadow Aluminum at $600. Along with these, one can also avail of the PM2.5 air purification system. Though the third row is manual but with some $300 expense, it can be electrically actuated. Moreover, there are some packages that have been offered as well but they add little relevance on the whole.

Cargo Capacity (cubic feet)

The Discovery is a space giant but not as big as the Chevrolet Tahoe. Unlike other segments, the Tahoe appears to be much more practical with its cabin than others. It has an exceptional 122.9 cubic feet of cargo volume after which the Discovery comes with a decent yet relatively smaller 74.3 cubic feet. As far as seating comfort is concerned, the Jaguar F-Pace is disappointing while others are fairly standard. A few of the features are:

  • PM2.5 air purification system
  • Acorn/Light Oyster grained leather-trim seats
  • Titanium Mesh Finisher
  • Morzine Headlining
  • Head-Up Display

What’s there to keep you entertained in the 2021 Land Rover Discovery?

If one is destined to pay more than 50 grand then one can expect nothing less than an 8-channel amplifier with Audio Equalization in the all-new Discovery. It has a Meridian Sound System as an option that can cost you $360. Apart from that, it gets an 11.4” Touchscreen along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An array of some premium upgrades like the Head-Up Display that comes at $970, 2D and 3D maps, and the Live Traffic Tracker can also be embedded into it.

2021 Land Rover Discovery SUV infotainment screen

The infotainment enclosure has other features as well that are not trim specific like the Wireless Charger and Phone Signal Booster but will be as expensive as $350.In addition to that, the online calendar synchronization and weather forecasts come in the online pack module. The highlights of this section are:

  • Pivi Pro
  • Wireless Charger
  • Phone Signal Booster
  • Audio Equalization
  • Meridian Sound System
  • Apple CarPlay
  • 12.3" Interactive Driver Display

Land Rover is well known for its extravagant looks and exterior outfits. The same is crystal clear with its new Discovery color pamphlet which includes the Fuji White as a standard, Santorini Black, Eiger Grey, Portofino Blue, and Lantau Bronze as options, each at a price of $710. On top of that, as per trim level, the tire's variance is also there. The base S gets 20" Gloss Silver while the R-Dynamic S gets 20” Satin Dark Grey Alloy Wheels. Even the top is intuitive with its electric sunroof and fixed rear panoramic roof. One does not get roof rails innately with it and they are pretty expensive at the same time.

Curb Weight (lb)

Length (inches)

Width (inches)

Height (inches)

Ground Clearance (inches)

Wheelbase (inches)

The design curvature of the Land Rover Discovery is somewhat comparable to others in different aspects. It is quite a heavier SUV when compared to the F-Pace. Its height is also on the darker side as it may push the center of gravity a bit higher. One stark figure in the table is the curb weight of the Tahoe along with its overhyped length and wheelbase. This makes it pretty less reliable without extra drivers' aids. A set of features are:

  • 20” Satin Dark Grey Alloy Wheels
  • Power Liftgate
  • Signature DRLs
  • Electric Sunroof
  • Rear Panoramic Roof

In terms of its structural resilience, there is nothing much available that can underpin that. It has not been rated by the NHTSA & IIHS yet. Therefore, it would be premature to vouch for Discovery’s integrity. But one can be seated with ease with its active safety features that are standard yet advanced. The Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist keep you on track and well within a safe driving distance. The crash reactionary force by the passenger is negated by an 8 Airbags package that has been installed near the passenger, driver, and side curtains.

These are further exaggerated by the Blind Spot Assist, 3D Surround Camera, and Traffic Sign Recognition that have been integrated into it. The HSE is a bit more armed with its All-Terrain Progress Control and Configurable Terrain Response Unit which is real value-assets in the off-roading and rain-soaked tracks. Some of the features have been listed below:

  •  Cruise Control
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • All-Terrain Progress Control
  • 3D Surround Camera
  • Adaptive Dynamics

2021 Land Rover Discovery vs. 2021 BMW X5

The BMW X5 is very inspiring with its awesome power curve and fuel economy. This 5-seater is fairly comfortable and ergonomically sound enough for long hauling. It outclasses the Discovery with its enriched practicality. The latter has better seating capacity than the X5 but that alone can’t be sufficient to shift the balance in its favor. But one should not overlook the price that the BMW asks to spend that may not be as friendly as it seems for someone.

2021 BMW X5

2021 Land Rover Discovery vs. 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Tahoe is a top-dog with its spaciousness and flexibility within the cabin but it is not a mirror image of it in terms of daily commuting. As it is tough on you for its fuel economy, handling, and dynamics. It is oversized and can be a real pain for you when stuck in traffic. Meanwhile, the Discovery rates much better in these regards and appears to be a more family-friendly SUV.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

2021 Land Rover Discovery vs. 2021 Jaguar F-Pace

The Jaguar F-Pace is lighter and a little more compact when compared to the Discovery that gives it an advantage in handling perspective. But if you would sway yourself a bit from the handling, you are entitled to experience the same with their performance scaling. They are comparable in terms of their fuel efficiency. On the whole, the Jaguar F-Pace may suit your budget.

2021 Jaguar F-Pace

Final Verdict

It is one of the best in the segment and is a blend of wholesomeness for the consumers. Decent performance, flexible space management, and an average fuel appetite with a 4WD can be a nice one to drive in. But one can’t give it a straight preference as the rivals like the BMW X5 & F-Pace are also value propositions that can expand the wingspan of your experience.
