Land Rover introduced the all-new 2022 Range Rover with a completely redesigned look, available 3-row seating, new engines and an upcoming EV version. The Land Rover Range Rover is a full-size luxury SUV with opulent off-road prowess. Buyers have an option to choose between a turbocharged inline-six or a BMW-sourced 523-hp twin-turbo V-8 engine. All Range Rover models offer off-road-capable features along with luxuries, such as an all-wheel-drive system, a rear-wheel steering system, and an air suspension. The all-new cabin boasts upscale materials such as leather, wood, and silky carpeting backed by plenty of technology. Surprisingly, Land Rover sells this new generation of Range Rover for the 2022 model while continuing to sell a 2022 model of the outgoing version until inventory lasts. Pricing for the all-new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover ranges from $104,000 to $163,500. The outgoing 2022 Range Rover starts at $92,000.

Other changes have been done to the chassis that comes with Dynamic Response Pro and all-wheel steering for better ride quality and improved handling. The new Range Rover is based on the MLA-Flex architecture which allows it for the first time to offer third-row seats. Inside the cabin, there is a minimalistic-designed dashboard and a floating curved touchscreen. While those preferring a sustainable material inside the cabin can ditch the leather upholstery this time. Aiming for a sustainable and carbon-neutral future the company has also announced a plug-in hybrid Range Rover for 2023 and a full-electric Range Rover by 2024.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover even though looks very familiar to the last year's model is a completely new SUV. It is more aerodynamic than last year, it has improved its handling as well as the ride quality, while inside the cabin it has just gotten even more luxurious. The number of trims has gone down this year and so has the number of engine options. But both the engines are powerful and capable enough to motivate the two-and-a-half-ton heavy SUV with zest. Apart from that, it continues to be an SUV that you can comfortably take off-road and if the legroom on this mammoth SUV seems short for you, the long-wheelbase or LWB variant could be the choice to opt for. In its segment, it is pitted against flagship SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, BMW X7, and Lexus LX 570.

Features
7.5/10

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover comes in three trims SE, Autobiography, and First Edition. The entry-level trim of the all-new-for-2022 Range Rover is the $104,000 SE model with seating for five. This Range Rover comes with a turbocharged 395-horsepower 6-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid assist.

For three rows of seating, buyers should choose the long-wheelbase (LWB) SE which starts from $110,000. The 3-row option is a first for Range Rover. The SE and SE LWB can both be optioned with a new, twin-turbo, 523-horsepower V8 engine. The price for the V8-powered Range Rover SE and SE LWB are $118,700 and $124,700 respectively.

Moving up the ladder, the price of the 2022 Ronge Rover skyrockets and all of these higher trims are powered by the V8 engine. The 5-seat Autobiography trim starts at $152,000 while the 7-seater LWB Autobiography costs $154,000. The top-spec and the most luxurious First Edition is priced at $158,200 and $163,500 for the LWB version. All the prices are excluding destination changes and of course, before adding any optional features or packages. As for the available optional packages and features Land Rover is yet to release complete details. But we expect the last year's options and packages to be carried over with minor changes.

Available in standard and LWB form, the Range Rover SV trims will feature exclusive interior design and even a 4-seat “Signature Suite” configuration. We expect SV pricing to be beyond the $200,000 mark.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

"The Range Rover has always been able to scale mountains and ford raging rivers, something that will not change for 2022." - Roadshow.com

For 2022, the all-new Range Rover is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged Inline-6 motor with a 48-volt hybrid system that puts out a combined output of 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. All models can be equipped with the optional 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that cranks out 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both the engines come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system as standard. Apart from this come 2023, there will be a 434-hp plug-in hybrid Range Rover that will offer 62 miles of all-electric drive range. While by 2024 the Range Rover will add an all-electric version and the most-powerful SV model with a gas-powered engine.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Powertrain

While performance figures for all the models aren't available yet, Land Rover claims that the latest iteration of the base model of the 2022 Range Rover can sprint from 0-60 MPH in 6.2 seconds, which is appreciable for a car of its size and dimensions. Though there have been no speculations about the quarter-mile timings, the top speed of 130 MPH is quick enough to get your adrenaline rushing.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Chassis

Improving the handling part this year is the four-wheel steering that promises to not only better the handling of this big SUV but also reduce its turning radius. While the most noteworthy change for a prospective Range Rover buyer is the 48-volt electronically controlled adaptive dampers coupled with the Dynamic Response Pro system that together ensures a magic-carpet-like ride quality by using the map data to preview the road ahead and set the suspension accordingly. Talking of the new-gen Range Rover's capability, this full-size Land Rover has always been able to scale mountains and ford raging rivers.

For 2022, this luxury SUV is off-road ready with a standard all-wheel-drive system, reverse wheel steering and air suspension that can adjust the ground clearance. The 2022 Range Rover have up to 11.6 inches of ground clearance and the ability to wade through 35.4 inches of water. To further enhance the grip, a locking rear differential is standard, while the Terrain Response 2 system, with its six driver-selectable modes, allows you to adjust the vehicle behaviour on different surfaces, from snowy to boulder fields to sand dunes and more.

When compared to its competitors, each SUV in the segment features a turbocharged inline-6 engine option as standard except for the Lexus LX 570 that comes with a naturally aspirated V8 motor. In terms of power and torque, there is no match to the Range Rover even the V8 powered Lexus puts out 12 hp less power and 3 lb-ft less torque compared to it. In terms of acceleration timings, the BMW X7 even though less powerful is the quickest while the Lexus LX 570 remains the slowest of the lot.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

"The mild-hybrid engine produces decent performance and surprisingly good fuel economy for such a large, hefty vehicle." - Kbb.com

While the final EPA figures of the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover are not yet known, we expect the 2022 Range Rover based on its engine to return 18 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. Combined, it will average at 20 miles per gallon of fuel, which is adequate as per segment standards. With a generous 27.5-gallon fuel tank the Range Rover can cover plenty of range before required to make a fuel stop.

On the other hand, both the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 manage higher efficiency but only by a notch averaging a combined mileage of 21 MPG. However, both vehicles, feature smaller fuel tanks that can hold a little under 22-gallons and manage a similar combined range clocking 460 and 500 miles respectively.

Interior
3.0/10

"Like the outgoing generation Range Rover, the new model offers a plush interior decked out with rich leathers and woods" - CarandDriver.com

The cabin of the all-new 2022 Range Rover receives a significant upgrade in terms of styling, luxuries and amenities. The most noticeable is a new floating and curved display touchscreen infotainment system. Also for the first time the Range Rover offers third-row seating with LWB versions. Thus now you can have a seating configuration of four, five, and seven on the all-new 2022 Range Rover. As for the seats they are similar in terms of comfort and size but this time around you have the option to ditch the leather-trimmed seats and instead go for an alternative fabric made up of premium textile and wool blend.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Dashboard

With all those changes, however, what remains common from the outgoing model is the comfort that each row of the SUV provides. There is ample head-, shoulder-, and legroom on offer with both the rows and the deeply bolstered seats do provide impressive under-thigh and lower-back comfort. Each seat inside the cabin feels adequately positioned, allowing for great visibility and viewing angles. It cohesively unifies practicality with luxury to create a comfortable and ergonomic cabin.  It comes equipped with all the bells and whistles one expects at the price point including ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and aluminum embellishments.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Infotainment

As for the infotainment, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover gets a 13.1-inch curved floating touchscreen display that runs on Privi Pro. This unit comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. New for this time is the Amazon Alexa voice assistant that can be used to perform a host of functions and connect to other Alexa devices. As for the rear passenger, they can have an optional 11.4-inch HD touchscreen mounted on the back of the front seats.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Rear Seats

As for the cargo space, the 2022 Range Rover with two-row seats offers 40.7 cubic feet of space while with the rear seats down the cargo area can be expanded to 83.5 cubic feet. While the cargo capacity figures for the three-row model of the Range Rover aren't out yet as of this writing.

All three SUVs are rather luxuriously built and feature best-in-class specifications to satiate every buyer’s needs. Like the Land Rover, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 features best-in-class first and second-row space. On the other hand, the BMW X7 is better off in terms of trunk volume having a maximum cargo capacity of 90.4 cubic feet, which is enough to fit your bikes for that early morning adventure. The Land Rover performs rather underwhelmingly in the aspect, managing a total trunk volume of 83.5 cubic feet only.

"We are fans of the outgoing Range Rover’s elegant and distinctive appearance, but the all-new generation goes for an even simpler, cleaner and smoother look. " - Kbb.com

Despite sporting a generic design with minor tweaks since 2013, the 2022 Range Rover continues to look upmarket and commands undeniable road presence; sweep through the traffic and you would turn a number of heads. However, in a bid to keep the 2022 Range Rover in tandem with its competitors, Land Rover has made a lot of changes and now the exterior not only looks smoother but also the SUV looks like it has been carved from one single piece. For eagle-eyes the most distinguishable feature is the design of the front and rear bumper along with the upside-down LED taillights.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Front Three-Quarter View

The large front grille that gets flanked by the headlamps looks bulky and the LED lights upfront have a distinct design to them. The air vents are gracefully dealt with and add an element of sportiness to the SUV and while fog lamps are available with the P525 SE trim and they look rather sublime and subtle. Look at it from the side and you get an actual sense of its gigantic dimensions, it looks tall, large, and handsome. At the rear, the uncomplicated fascia with the rear spoiler, chrome exhaust outlets, and the centerline with Range Rover badging that runs between the vertically placed taillamps add to the plushness.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2021 BMW X7

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i is one of the latest introductions into the brand’s lineup and as their flagship offering in the SUV segment aims at providing a refined and sophisticated experience. Bearing a lower price tag, the BMW is almost instantaneously likable, however, its performance backs its capabilities of being a worthy competitor in the segment. While its inline-6 engine might not be the best in the segment, its acceleration capabilities are amongst the top-performing SUVs in the market. Its frugality adds to its abilities and while the fuel tank is the smallest in the segment, the range covered will be adequate for all classes of buyers.

2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i

While the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover is almost similar in both aspects, it starts to lose out when interior space is concerned. It misses out on the third row of seating as standard and has lower cargo capacity. BMW’s single-screen infotainment unit feels sought-after and easy to learn, while its exterior design also looks more premium with a rather upright stance makes the SUV look larger than its competitors and by being a better performer in aspects more than one, the 2021 BMW X7 is the better options amongst the two.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is a household name in the full-size SUV market. Being one of the older players, it understands buyers’ needs intricately and as a result, is an inch-perfect offering. The latest GLS 450 is regal and comes packed with a number of comfort creatures that make it a viable option for the price one pays for it. Despite being upmarket, it is among the quickest and fastest SUV on offer in comparison and is impressively efficient.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 4MATIC

When compared to the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover, the 2021 GLS 450 4MATIC gains ground in a number of aspects. Its third row of seats increases the number of passengers that the SUV can accommodate and with both rear rows folded down its cargo capacity feels adequate for any stuff you might want to fit into the trunk. With its refreshed design, it looks better than before and its MBUX infotainment system and a large number of safety features make it a more sought-after and safer choice in the market.

Final Verdict
7.0/10

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover carries forward the legacy that the SUV has created in the market. It continues to be a premium offering that reflects bespoke engineering and features a potent powertrain that delivers class-competing performance. However, its cons overweigh its advantages. While it features a standard 4WD system, the Range Rover's dimensions feel overpowering in tight spaces although the company has tried to improve on that part by giving four-wheel steering. But for most of its buyers, their main concern remains the cabin's comfort and quality. This is where the Range Rover hits the ball out of the park with a premium and well-appointed interior and a comfortable ride quality that is second to none.
