Hailed as the Rolls Royce of SUVs, until unless, of course, Rolls-Royce actually builds one on its own, the Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography is an ultra-luxurious and very capable SUV. It is one of the very few SUVs that can go hard on the roads but can still pamper you in luxury on the inside. And now, with its plug-in hybrid iteration, it has gone a bit softer as per its nature and chugs less fuel than it used to.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

As more and more vehicles go electric, Land Rover too decided to give its vehicles an electric power source which is why its flagship offering comes with an electric motor driving its wheels along with a gasoline 4-cylinder unit. But has electrification made the flagship Range Rover any less capable or any less luxurious? Absolutely no; the Range Rover Autobiography still remains true to its nature but now runs slightly cleaner. The upcoming 2022 model of the same will also follow the same footsteps like that of its predecessor. This also highlights the continuation of rivalry with the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid, Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, and the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid PHEV in the end.

Features

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Plug-in Hybrid is expected to be offered in the same single trim level, the P400e PHEV, and will be priced at around $131,000. Considering that as a matter of fact, the likeliness of those 24-way power-adjustable heated and cooled front seats with massage function and 4-way heated and cooled rear seats is also anticipated. Exterior charm with 21-inch split-spoke, gloss light silver alloy wheels and Automatic High Beams Headlights are as evergreen as the aforementioned, so their relevance can be reintroduced again for the upcoming model. Moreover, the 29-speaker 1700W Meridian Signature Sound System including subwoofers is in itself an epitome that can’t be kept out of focus.

The interior accents with Perforated, semi-aniline leather upholstery and natural calefaction regulation by the 4-zone automatic climate control have been inspiring enough to be among those definite to be spotted again and again at least for the near future. The safety insurance with Forward collision mitigation, Steering Assist, Roll Stability Control, Blind Spot Assist, and Lane Keep Assist follows the same lead as that of other sections in its influential persuasion for the 2022 Range Rover Autobiography P400e PHEV. Therefore, this SUV is surely feature-packed machinery on offer by the brand.

Which trim should you buy?

Since it is the only trim in this lineup, choosing might not be a tough task but choosing it over others can be. Top-notch safety and extremity in comfort are two of the limelight in this SUV that can majorly impact the customer’s inclination towards it. The confidence on brake pedals and engaging interior tech-ends are also supportive of its stance. So it is definitely a nice option to pick from the crowd.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Plug-in Hybrid Release Date

There has been no official announcement yet from any end, so we will also hedge our bets.

Engine and Performance

3.0/10

The Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Plug-in Hybrid is powered by a 2 liter, turbocharged, inline-4 engine, and an electric motor. Along with a 141 hp electric motor, the hybrid setup churns out 398 horses and 472 lb-ft of torque. The power plant is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and power is split among all four wheels.

The biggest advantage of driving a hybrid vehicle is the instant boost of torque you get every time you step on the gas. The SUV picks up the pace so quickly that it’s hard to believe that you’re inside a 5500 pounder, full-size SUV. Its performance isn’t breathtaking but for a vehicle of its size and power, it is quite quick on the straight line. The Range Rover does 0-60 mph in about 6.5 seconds while it does a quarter-mile run in about 15.3 seconds. As the official release of data has not been confirmed yet for the 2022 model, the 2021 spec sheet has been taken as a reference here.

The Porsche isn’t the most powerful vehicle of the lot, yet it manages to be the quickest. The Cayenne does 0-60 mph in about 4.7 seconds while it hits the quarter-mile mark in about 11.5 seconds. On the other hand, the Maybach GLS is the most powerful on paper, yet it is slower than the Porsche by a tenth of a second. Meanwhile, the Range Rover Autobiography, if a replica of its predecessor, is the least powerful and the slowest SUV in the competition following Bentley Hybrid. Hence, it is a bit clear that Porsche has the best power to sum ratio on offer.

Fuel Economy

8.0/10

Not many people buying a vehicle at this price point are bothered about fuel economy but it’s always good to know the numbers. The Range Rover, in general, delivers about 19 MPG combined while the EPA is yet to rate the city and highway figures. The SUV gets a rating of 42 MPGe and comes equipped with a 17.1 kWh battery that allows it to drive for about 33 miles all-electric. Altogether, one is capable of driving nearly 456 miles on a daily basis with it. The datasheet, though, belongs to the 2021 model but we don’t see any significant change in it any sooner.

The Porsche once again outperforms all the others in the competition. It delivers 21 MPG combined with an impressive range of around 416 miles whereas the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 rests at the bottom of the strata. However, this section is not of high significance which is why it is advisable not to pivot one’s judgment as per this lackluster data.

Interior

9.0/10

he Range Rover Autobiography isn’t any ordinary Land Rover SUV but it is the British marquee’s flagship model and hence it has all the finest equipment and features that Land Rover has in its warehouse. When you first enter the SUV, you’d be surprised by the sheer amount of space on offer. The passenger volume is too good and 4 passengers of all shapes and sizes can easily slump in. At the front, you get Perforated Semi-Aniline Leather Seats that can be adjusted in 24 different ways and that too with heating and cooling functions incorporated into them. The Genuine Wood Steering feels just right and the Cruise Control on it for distance pacing further enhances the appeal. In addition to all these, it has been given Memory Settings for Door Mirrors, Steering Wheel, and Head Restraints as well. These assets are impressive on all fronts which compels us to speculate that all of them will be reinstituted in the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Plug-in Hybrid again.

With the second row up, keeping Range Rover Autobiography predecessor cabin space management in mind, there’s about 34.5 cubic feet of cargo space on offer while you can fold the second row down and open up to about 70.9 cubic feet of volume. Apart from that, in terms of quality of materials, opulence, and comfort, nothing comes close to the interiors of the Bentley Bentayga. Not that others are less luxurious but the Bentayga just feels a notch above all the others. On the other hand, the Range Rover boasts of offering the highest passenger space in the competition. Plus, the Range Rover offers the highest cargo capacity and that makes it more practical and usable than others at the same time.

Key interior features:

  • 24-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats with massage function
  • 4-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated rear seats
  • Heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel with genuine wood trim
  • Voice-activated 4-zone automatic climate control
  • Perforated, semi-aniline leather upholstery
  • Memory Settings for Door Mirrors, Steering Wheel and Head Restraints
  • Day-Night Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Range Rover Autobiography comes equipped with Land Rover’s InControl infotainment system that can be accessed via Touch Pro Duo split touchscreen infotainment displays. The SUV has two infotainment displays – the one at the top, on the dash, has features and functions for controlling the audio and vehicle settings while the one at the bottom is dedicated to climate control, seat adjustment, and temperature settings. The infotainment system is not the most intuitive to use and it gets a bit confusing while navigating between the two screens.

The upside though, is that the SUV comes equipped with a 1700 watt Meridian Signature sound system that delivers very crisp sound and is one of the best audio systems in the whole of the auto industry. This list of values primarily radiates the 2021 model belongings but the system is so ravishing in its stature that it feels very probable to spot them in the upcoming model too.

Some of the expected features are:

  • 29-speaker, 1700 watt Meridian Signature surround sound system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth smartphone integration
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • HD radio
  • Touch Pro Duo dual infotainment interface

Exterior

7.0/10

There are not many ways to tell apart the Range Rover Autobiography from the regular Range Rover and nor is there any way to tell that this is a hybrid vehicle from the outside. However, it still is a great looker and will indeed grab many eyeballs. It sits on large 21-inch wheels that give it a nice tall and commanding stance. At the front, it gets that signature Range Rover grille and the part on the grille where the Land Rover logo sits is actually the lid for the charger to go in.

On the sides, you have those signature Atlas exterior accents that look cool and then there’s that classic Range Rover overhang behind the rear wheels that sets it apart from all the other SUVs. The Range Rover still retains the tough, boxy shape and it just tells you that it isn’t just a mere luxury SUV but is equally capable of taking on the bad roads. At the back, there’s a split tailgate and the lower section can be used as a small, makeshift picnic table. Overall, the Range Rover sports a no-frills design unlike some of the other fancy SUVs in the market. As there has been no official data or information regarding the 2022 model to date, so the features that are expected to be called upon in the newer format of the 2021 model have been described for reference.

Looks are a matter of taste after all and so we’ll leave it for you to decide which SUV looks the best. The Porsche has a slightly sporty exterior design and it looks quite different than all the other SUVs. The Range Rover on the flip side retains that old-school boxy SUV shape that helps it stand out in the crowd. The Bentley and the Maybach SUVs look more modern and fancy and have a charm of their own. On top of that, they are somewhat around the same dimensional limits also which signifies that their handling pursuit will be at par only.

Key exterior features:

  • 21-inch 7-split spoke, gloss light silver diamond-turned finish alloy wheels
  • Express open/close, sliding/tilting glass 1st and 2nd-row sunroof with power sunshade
  • Powered auto-dimming power-folding heated side-view mirrors
  • Speed sensitive, rain-detecting wipers with heated jets
  • Powered tailgate
  • Auto on/off projector-beam auto-leveling headlights with washers
  • Soft-close doors

Safety

7.0/10

The Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography PHEV hasn’t yet been tested and rated by the NHTSA and IIHS and that leaves us with nothing to talk about for a concrete claim. However, this is Land Rover’s flagship offering and they will not compromise on safety in a vehicle like this one. Assists like the Forward collision mitigation, Blindspot monitor, Rear traffic monitor, and High-speed automatic emergency braking have already been a part of this frame structure and there are hardly any arguments for not having them in the newer model. Further, the Dynamic Stability Control with Roll Stability Control adds that extra touch in maintaining the vehicle’s trajectory and wheel alignment which is also among the front runners to be brought back most probably.

Key safety features:

  • Side impact beams
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Blindspot monitor
  • Rear traffic monitor
  • High-speed automatic emergency braking
  • 360-degree camera
  • Lane-keep assist with departure warning

Competition

6.0/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Plug-in Hybrid vs. 2021 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is a bit costlier than the Range Rover Autobiography and has a more powerful powertrain and is also quick off the straight line. It is also a bit more luxurious on the inside with finer materials and trims than the Range Rover and that extra premium does buy you a more opulent interior. However, the Range Rover Autobiography is more off-road capable and has the off-roading character in its genes that the Bentley lacks. Now, if you’d be driving your SUV around the city and on the highways, then perhaps the Bentley would be a better choice given that it is more luxurious on the inside and the Bentley logo obviously fetches you the extra snob. However, if you need a luxury SUV that you’d occasionally take off-roading and explore the wilderness, then there’s no better vehicle than the Range Rover Autobiography.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Plug-in Hybrid vs. 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS is yet another hybrid ultra-luxury SUV, although this one is a mild hybrid. Just like the Bentley, the Maybach GLS is priced slightly higher than the Range Rover but then it gets you a very plush cabin and a more powerful engine. Again, the Maybach GLS is not as off-road capable as the Range Rover Autobiography. Plus, the Range Rover delivers slightly better fuel economy and that would perhaps just help you save a bit on fuel and be kinder to nature. So, if you’re willing to spend the extra cash, go for the Maybach GLS, however, if you're looking for something you’d yourself be driving, then the Range Rover is the one for you.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Plug-in Hybrid vs.2021 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid PHEV

The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is a proper driver’s car. Now, if you’re looking for a vehicle that can offer you an enthralling driving experience then, the Porsche is the one you should go for. The Porsche isn’t as opulent or spacious on the inside as the Range Rover but it drives way better than the Range Rover. It also costs much less and you can end up saving a good amount of money if you just settle for the Porsche. However, if luxury is your priority, then the Range Rover Autobiography is what you should put your money on.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Plug-in Hybrid is a mixed bag. While there are some very good aspects about it, there are also a few aspects that just let you down. For starters, the Land Rover looks tough, has that “go anywhere” attitude, and drives quite well. On the flip side though, it features a dated interior design, doesn’t get advanced autonomous driving aids, and features a few interior bits that seem a little cheap for a vehicle in this segment and at this price point. With that being said, it still is a very good machine to drive around in; it is luxurious, it has enough power and it attracts a tonne of attention. If you’re in the market, looking for an ultra-luxury SUV with a hybrid powertrain, then this one should certainly be on your list.
