The compact luxury crossovers mostly do the job well as a daily driver on the weekdays and household errand-runner on weekends, and the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is the one that does all of that and more, in great style. With sporty looks, agile handling, and above-average off-roading capabilities, the Range Rover Evoque compensates for the compromised practicality. The long list of standard features and an even longer list of options with a great fuel efficiency to match is what excites many buyers.

For the 2014 model year, the Land Rover has made no exterior improvements except for the new rearview mirror, while the interior receives changes to only a few features. The 6-speed transmission now makes way for a new 9-speed transmission and the automated parking system now also features a Parking Exit function. The prices start at an MSRP of $42,025 which is quite a premium over the rivals which include Acura RDX, Audi Q5, and BMW X1 compact crossovers.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Features

9.0/10

Land Rover offers the Evoque with five different trims with no engine or drivetrain options to choose from but does offer optional packages. Being a Range Rover, even the base Pure trim gets a lot of features as standard, while the mid-range Pure Plus and Pure Premium trims add more creature comforts to the car. Most of the premium technology and features are offered with the Prestige trim onwards while the Dynamic trim adds more visually appealing features to the mix.

We Recommend

As the prices are really high even for the base trim of the 2014 Range Rover Evoque, it is in your best interest to opt for the Pure Plus trim which adds a few more creature comforts, and then add-on additional options to better suit your personal preferences and needs.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission which powers all four wheels as standard. There are no powertrain options available but mechanical center limited-slip differential and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system which automatically adjusts engine and transmission responses, while descent control and hill-start assist also aids in most tricky scenarios.

The engine is rated for 240 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque which might sound a bit low but never feels so, and that can be clearly seen with the acceleration timing figures. The 2014 Evoque does a 0-60 mph dash in just 6.2 seconds while covering the quarter-mile run in under 15 seconds. The light-weight and precise steering and the new quick-shifting gearbox make for an enjoyable SUV to drive, both on and off the tarmac.

The BMW X1 is not only the most affordable SUV here, it also has a similar engine output as that of the Range Rover Evoque and is in fact pretty much equally fast in the straight-line tests. Acura RDX on the other hand costs a bit more than the X1 and is only two-tenth of a second slower in both the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile tests. The Audi Q5 is the slowest of the lot, taking over a second more than the Acura, and yet is also considerably affordable than the Evoque.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Fuel Economy

6.0/10

The small capacity turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood of the Range Rover Evoque translates to great fuel efficiency figures. The EPA rates the 2014 Evoque for 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highways, and 24 mpg of combined city and highway driving. The frugal engine together with a sizable 18.5-gallon fuel tank offers a solid driving range of well over 500 miles of highway cruising on a single tank of gas.

Only the BMW X1 manages to overshadow the frugality of the Evoque, but it employs a smaller gas tank which brings the driving range just on par with the Evoque. The similarly sized 2-liter turbocharged engine under the hood of the Q5 is marginally less efficient than the Land Rover while the Acura RDX is the only one with a naturally aspirated engine and hence has the highest fuel consumption amongst the cars present here.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Interior

9.0/10

Land Rover has focussed a lot on the aesthetics of the car and the stylish interior design is a testament to that. Add to that the multiple shades of premium leather, wood, metal, and plastic inlays, the cabin is one of the best to look at in this segment. The floating center stack and the rotary gear selector look particularly nice and the feature-loaded cabin leaves very little to complain about.

In terms of space, there is a decent amount of space for the front seat occupants but the rear seat passengers will have to make do with tighter legroom. Also, the upward sloping door sheet and the sloping roofline translates to a small window at the rear, which doesn’t do much to make the SUV feel airy. The 20.3 cu-ft of the trunk can be extended to 51 cu-ft with the rear seat folded and yet it is one of the smallest trunks in the segment.

The Acura RDX on the other has loads of space for both its passengers and their luggage, while the Audi Q5 offers plenty of cabin space with the cargo capacity being the best in this comparison. The BMW X1 has a tight rear seat to offer, but the front seat offers better headroom and legroom than the Evoque and also has a larger boot to offer. That being said, the premium and modern feel of the 2014 Evoque is unparalleled.

  • 8-Way Driver Seat and 6-Way Passenger Seat
  • Heated Front Bucket Seats w/lumbar and memory
  • 60-40 Folding Bench Heated Fold Forward Rear Seat
  • Perforated Leather Seat Trim w/contrasting twin needle stitching on seats and dash
  • Leather Upholstered Dashboard, central panels, and door panels
  • Tilt/Telescoping Heated Leather Steering Wheel
  • Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Memory Settings for Door Mirrors

How intuitive is the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque’s infotainment unit?

The standard 8-inch infotainment system is loaded with features and feels modern and premium to use as well. The interface is pretty intuitive with the screen controlling most cabin controls but the slow response timings are something that can make using the system frustrating while on the move. The standard Meridian audio system is pretty good as well but the 17-speaker setup available on higher trims just enhances the overall experience.

  • The 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • 17-speaker 825W Meridian surround sound system
  • Bluetooth telephone connectivity and audio streaming capabilities
  • HD radio and SiriusXM satellite radio w/3 months trial
  • Premium Navigation System w/off-road maps
  • 10 disc virtual CD changer
  • Voice commands

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Exterior

6.0/10

Considered as the fashionista of the luxury compact SUV segment, the Range Rover Evoque is one of the most stylish and visually appealing compact crossover available in the market today. The sleek headlamps and tail lights with the dual-tone paint scheme, sloping roofline and flared wheel arches solidifies the image of a sporty yet adventurous SUV. The sporty design and high stance with large wheels make the 2014 Range Rover Evoque stand out in the crowd.

The limited passenger and cargo space in the Land Rover is due to the smaller dimensions of the SUV. Even the BMW X1 is much larger in terms of dimensions as compared to the Evoque but has a much lower ride height to offer. The Acura rides the closest to the ground and is the longest SUV here. The Audi Q5 weighs the most but offers the longest wheelbase which aids in opening up class-leading cabin space.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Safety

9.0/10

Being a premium high value and low sales volume vehicle, neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has tested the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque yet for rating them in terms of safety. But the fact that it offers plenty of driver assistance features and safety features, many of which are available as standard, assure safety for all its occupants, The Terrain Response system ensures safety off the tarmac while other driver aids help in the urban jungle. A highlight of most of the available features has been mentioned below.

It is for the ones who want the practicality of a compact crossover without compromising on its performance, handling, and off-road capabilities. If this is what describes you and the tight rear seat, limited cargo space, and a premium price tag doesn’t bother you, the 2014 Range Rover Evoque could serve you really well.
