The Range Rover Evoque, the smallest Land Rover on offer, can single handedly be entitled as the creator of the “luxury compact SUV” segment. Being the flag bearer for the Land Rovers of modern times, the Evoque carved a niche segment of its own in the market, unlike any other SUV. Even though it has been a charmer in terms of design and technology, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has always received criticism for its low practicality, dismal reliability, and high ownership costs.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, in its third iteration of the new generation, commands a starting price of almost $44,700. The 2022 Range Rover Evoque shares space with no competition in the market directly, but the closest competition we could think of, just based on pricing, would be the 2022 Audi Q5, the 2022 Mercedes Benz GLC, and the 2022 BMW X4.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque User Complaints and Problems

Boasting one of the lowest scores in quality and reliability rating as per JD power, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is in no shortage of complaints. Even though the NHTSA has only one registered complaint against the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque since 2021, unofficial owner forums have been flooding with grievances. Electrical complaints that extend to the powertrain have been the major roadblock for the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and still come in as a concern for owners.

Listed below are the most common problems of the 2022Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and their implications on the ownership experience.

Mechanical Complaints

  • Engine- Random engine stall is one issue that has been affecting many owners of the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque as officially stated by the NHTSA. Even though a few complaints mention this issue occurring at high outside temperatures, failure to replicate this problem by the dealership has left complaints unattended. No error codes were found relating to this problem making the diagnostics even more difficult. Random loss of power when depressing throttle, engine cooling fan remaining on for long durations after the engine is turned off and fuel smell are complaints registered against the powertrain on the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, with most issues left with no convincing fixes.
  • Transmission – The transmission on theLand Rover Range Rover Evoque has always been called out for faulty software by its owners. Multiple drivers have complained about a “gearbox fault detected” warning on their instrument cluster and the vehicle stops responding to throttle input. Another common issue reported was the “Select gear to maneuver” display warning, which most often comes on when trying to roll from a standstill. Dropping off a gear while driving as stated by owners brings in a high risk of a crash even though none were recorded against this issue.

Electric System Complaints

  • Powertrain software- Faulty software with the powertraincaused the engine to stall at multiple instances as complained by the owners. When the car starts to move after start-up or from a stop, the SUV will slip out of drive mode and display a warning “select gear to maneuver”. Even though owners have got software reflashes and updates for these issues, some are still experiencing the same problem. No crashes or injuries were reported against this problem.
  • Tire pressure monitoring system- A common problem on the Range Rover Evoques has been the TPMS system. At least 3 complaints on faulty readings from the system have been registered by the NHTSA. The automaker is aware of this issue and has even initiated recalls to fix this issue both for the current-gen and previous-gen Evoque SUVs. No crashes relating to this problem have been recorded so far.
  • Liftgate issue- Multiple complaints on the premature failure of the liftgate button have been lodged against the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque by owners. Locks failing can cause the boot lid to get stuck, preventing even manual access to the cargo bay. The SUV going into safe mode when the battery is low was one plausible explanation given to customers on this issue by the dealership. The tailgate closing itself when the cargo hold is in use is also one problem brought out by many customers with this SUV.
  • Battery draining quick- Many owners have complained about the battery draining overnight on their Evoque SUVs. Even though a faulty infotainment system was initially thought to be the culprit, owners were quick to dismiss it as the root cause since people who got the infotainment replaced were still facing the same issue.

Structural Complaints

  • Front suspension- Grinding noises from the front end while turning to either side has been a major fault that customers have been complaining about, especially with the initial batch of the new model years of the as stated by owners. The front control arms were replaced in some cases, which again did nothing to solve the issue. No official statement on this complaint has been released by Land Rover whatsoever. No crashes were reported against this case though.

The numbers depicted in the table do not provide an actual estimate as it includes only complaints registered officially by the NHTSA. Unofficial forums have many complaints lodged against the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and it is far more than mentioned.

As far as competition goes, the 2022 Mercedes Benz GLC is the only SUV here with no recalls for this year like the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. The 2022 Audi Q5 and the 2022 BMW X4 each have 2 and 3 recalls respectively on their names in 2022. That said, no SUV here is a brand new model for 2022 and has received a handful of recalls since their respective launch years. Also, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has owners complaining of the same issues persisting even after the recall, which we think is not all that confidence-inspiring and may negatively affect the ownership.

Which Land Rover Range Rover Evoque model year should you avoid?

The 2020 Range Rover Evoque is one model year to stay clear off with 6 recalls and 14 complaints registered with the NHTSA. The 2019Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, which is the final running model for the first generation of Evoques and the present 2022 model, would be the only model years that we are confident enough to recommend. Both these model years have the least numbers of complaints and recalls registered against them and come out at the most mechanically/electrically sorted models, technically.

Should you buy a used Land Rover Range Rover Evoque?

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a super niche product from Land Rover. It comes out as a lifestyle product rather than an outright practical one. Traits that we usually relate to Land Rovers such as off-road capability, cabin space, and convenience take a hit here and one of the least rated reliability scores also doesn’t come in its favor as well. Pricing is also something that we consider Land Rover has gone a bit overboard with this compact luxury SUV. The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a stylish and unique proposition for those willing to take the compromise but comes out as a hard recommendation in the presence of competition that does most things better and cheaper.
