Named after one of London’s most iconic and famous areas, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster is a very unique SUV. The P400 Westminster is placed between the brawny and off-road-ready standard Range Rover and the ultra-luxurious Range Rover Autobiography. Hence, the P400 Westminster basically gets a few bits from those vehicles and is quite capable of taking on the bad terrains while pampering its passengers on the inside.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Moreover, the P400 Westminster is a mild hybrid machine and thus doesn’t get any direct rivals since there are hardly any mild-hybrid SUVs at that price point. The SUV that comes closest to it is the Mercedes-Benz GLS, but otherwise, the only comparable vehicles are the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid and the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid which have different characteristics and pricing. So, is the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster worth the money? Is it a better proposition than all the other vehicles? We shall find that out in this in-depth review.

Which trim should you buy?

There’s just one trim level on offer, and hence that’s all you can buy. The Westminster variant of the Range Rover does get a 5-liter supercharged V8 engine as an option, and we’ve dedicated a review for it. If you need those extra horses under the hood, you might perhaps get the 5-liter unit. This review will revolve around the Range Rover Westminster with the 3-liter 6-cylinder P400 engine. It still is a very capable powerplant and also comes with all the bells and whistles one would expect a car in this price range to come with.

Release Date

The release date for the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster is still hazy. The brand has confirmed the arrival of the SUV through their site but has not disclosed any more details. We believe that these are after-effects of the slowdown in the automotive industry following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, speculations state that the car should be released by October this year, and deliveries might start by December.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster is powered by a 3-liter Turbocharged Inline 6-cylinder mild-hybrid engine. The engine is clubbed with a 48-volt electric starter motor and hence this SUV is a mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV). The powertrain delivers 400 horses along with 395 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and power as standard is sent to all four wheels. The Range Rover’s steering feels a touch too light, and you do not get the kind of feedback you would want. It isn’t vague, but it certainly isn’t up to the point. It gets air suspension, and even if their character can be adjusted, they’re a bit on the softer side. The SUV soaks almost all the bumps and potholes.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV driving view

This is a luxury SUV, and most of its owners will perhaps never get behind its wheel, and so this thing is about comforting and relaxed driving than anything else, and that’s pretty evident from its acceleration numbers. In the straight line, it does 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds, while it takes about 13.4 seconds to cut the quarter-mile distance. If these numbers are too slow for you, then there’s a 5-liter V8 unit on offer which you can get by paying extra. We’ve talked about it in a separate review. The SUV has got decent brakes and feels confident in terms of deceleration as well. Some rivals are a little better in this regard, but the Range Rover is still very competitive in the segment.

Well, the Range Rover P400 Westminster has the lowest power and torque numbers in the competition and hence it is the slowest of the lot. Porsche is the fastest of the lot in terms of 0-60 mph acceleration, while the Bentley is quickest on the drag strip. The Mercedes has a lot of power but is unable to translate that into real-world performance. If you’re looking for something that is exhilarating and fun to drive, well then, you’ll be disappointed with the Westminster. It’s not that the Range Rover doesn’t drive well, but then there are SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne and the Bentayga that simply feel more engaging.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV Fuel Economy

The Range Rover P400 Westminster’s mild-hybrid system gives it a big advantage in terms of fuel economy. People buying a vehicle in this segment and price range won’t be worried about fuel economy all that much, but it’s always good to save a few bucks on gas. In the city, the P400 Westminster drives for about 18 miles on a single gallon, while on the highway, it goes for about 23 miles. It gets an EPA rating of 20 MPG combined, which is good considering the size and power of this SUV. The car also gets a massive 27.5-gallon fuel tank, and this gives it the best numbers in its class when it comes to overall range.

The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the competition and beats the Land Rover by a very small margin. The Porsche delivers 21 MPG combined, while on the other hand, the Bentley and Mercedes-Benz deliver 19 and 18 MPG combined, respectively. The Cayenne does not offer impressive range figures due to its smaller tank and hence the Range Rover is the best continent crusher in this segment.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV Interior

We like the Range Rover Westminster’s interior design for being simple and subtle. No fancy lines or curves and no gimmicky features and equipment. While some might find it boring and outdated, we like it because it is neat and clean. Up front, you get a large rectangular dashboard that has rectangular air-con vents and rectangular screens mounted on it. Then there’s the center console made out of shadow walnut, and then you also have the front armrest wrapped in high-quality leather. The cabin as standard gets ebony black color treatment, but you do get multiple contrast color options.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV front seats

The cabin of the SUV is quite spacious, and there’s ample passenger room on offer on both rows. The front seats come wrapped in premium high-quality perforated Windsor leather, and so do the rear seats. The seats are pretty snug and offer good support. All the materials used on the inside are high quality, and the fit and finish are also great. The cabin feels rich and upscale, and Land Rover has improved quite a lot in this area in the past few years. It has 31.8 cubic feet of standard luggage space on offer, and there are also several storage spaces on the inside.

Of all the four SUVs in the competition, the Bentayga is the most luxurious. The Bentley is priced higher than all the others, and the reason for the higher pricing is the fact that it comes with a very serene and opulent cabin. However, when it comes to sheer passenger space, it’s the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster that’s the best in the competition. On the flip side, the Mercedes-Benz is the only one that can carry 7 passengers while all the others are built to accommodate just 5. Standout interior features include:

  • 20-way power-adjustable heated and cooled front seats
  • Power-recline heated rear seats
  • Perforated Windsor leather seats
  • Configurable ambient lighting
  • Four-zone automatic climate control
  • Heater leather steering wheel
  • Walnut wood veneer
  • Full Morzine cloth headliner

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Range Rover Westminster comes equipped with a Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. The system basically consists of two screens. The one that sits above, in the center of the dash, is the one through which you control all your infotainment, music, and navigation settings. The second screen that sits below and floats between the center console and the dash is the one through which you control your climate control, ambient lighting, seat position and temperature, and other settings. The two-screen setup looks interesting but is quite confusing to use.

The car also gets a 19-speaker audio system that takes the whole in-car entertainment experience to the very next level. Key infotainment features include:

  • 825 watt Meridian 19-speaker surround sound system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • HD radio
  • Voice command

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV Exterior

With its imposing stance and the classic boxy shape, the Range Rover Westminster is quite a good-looking SUV. Agreed, it isn't as grand as the Bentayga, but it does bear a lot of attitude on its face. Land Rover’s design has always been evolutionary rather than revolutionary, and this one is no different. At the front, you have that rectangular grille along with rectangular headlights. There’s a large panoramic sunroof at the top, and at the back, you have that trademark Range Rover overhang that looks really cool and unique.

The squared-off windows and the angled edges help the Range Rover stand out in a world of curvy SUVs.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster might not be the most rad-looking SUV in the competition, but it does have all the capacity to draw attention and command power on the roads. It has the highest ground clearance in the competition, and that just makes it more off-road friendly than any other SUV in the competition. The Mercedes GLS 580 is the biggest vehicle in length and wheelbase which helps it in offering seating space for seven. Key exterior features include:

  • 21-inch 7-spoke, gloss silver alloy wheels
  • Powered gesture tailgate
  • Sliding panoramic sunroof
  • Power-folded heated outside rearview mirrors
  • Automatic LED headlights with signature DRLs
  • Rain sensing wipers with heated jets
  • LED tail lamps

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV Safety

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster hasn’t yet been tested by NHTSA and IIHS, and neither have its previous models. That leaves us nothing to talk about safety ratings. However, Land Rover understands that their vehicle will carry important people, so they won’t really compromise on safety. Moreover, it comes with some advanced safety and driver assistance features that simply imply that Land Rover has taken safety seriously. Some of the standout safety features on offer include:

  • Lane departure warning
  • High-speed automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop and go
  • Blindspot monitor
  • Driver condition monitor
  • 360-degree camera
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV Competition

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster vs. 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580

The S-Class of SUVs vs the Rolls Royce of SUVs. Well, there are two perspectives for this one. If you really need a true, tough, ultra-luxury SUV, then the Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster is the one you should go for. However, if you need all the glitz and glamour and shiny new tech equipment, then the GLS 580 is perhaps where you should put your money.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster vs. 2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid

The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is an all-out driver’s SUV. It isn’t an SUV that’s built to pamper you in the back seat. It is a sports car in the guise of an SUV. Of course, it is luxurious on the inside, but it doesn’t quite match the Range Rover in this area. Again, if you’re going to be the one behind the wheel most of the time, then the Porsche could be a good buy. If you’re going to be chauffeured around most of the time, then you perhaps should spend the extra dollars and get the Land Rover.

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster vs. 2022 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is the most affordable iteration of the Bentayga, and yet it is around $60,000 costlier than the Land Rover. Nonetheless, that extra money gets you the snob and presence of a Bentley. It gets you a super luxurious cabin and tonnes of other features. The Range Rover, on the other hand, offers more passenger and cargo space and better off-roading prowess. However, in our opinion, the Bentley is the better vehicle of the two and is totally worth the extra bucks it commands. So if you can spend the extra dollars, get the Bentayga over the Land Rover.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster SUV Final Verdict

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P400 Westminster is a stellar vehicle. It has good power, drives well, has proper SUV off-roading abilities, delivers decent fuel economy numbers, is spacious on the inside, and has a beautifully crafted cabin. However, it falls behind in certain areas when compared to rivals. It makes less power and is slower than some of its rivals that are priced lower than it. It doesn’t feel as modern as the others on the inside, and some may even find the interior a bit outdated. Nonetheless, it still is a pretty unique proposition, and if it fits your taste and purpose, we don’t think it’s a bad buy.
