Its all-aluminum platform is more capable than ever and this midsize SUV has its prices start at MSRP $63,650 without options. Being a car from the famed British manufacturer, the car can be personalized to a very large extent using the brand’s wide list of optional extras. One also gets a new lane departure warning system and 360° parking sensors as well as other small changes in terms of the trim level for the 2015 model year. The Range Rover Sport is offered in a total of seven trim levels. The more powerful Supercharged variants, as well as the luxurious Autobiography variant, are reviewed separately. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a very well equipped car and does not need much in terms of options. However, it does get a very generous helping of optional extras and stays true to the British brand’s philosophy of customization. These include features that can make your car extremely special like a 23 speaker Meridian sound system, quad-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking, towing package, rear-seat entertainment system, and so on. Among the three trims levels that we are reviewing here, our pick of the lot would be the HSE Limited which makes the most amount of sense considering its price range.

Engine and Performance

The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a very powerful car and has a 3.0 L V-6 that makes 340 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. Although it is not the most powerful engine offered with this car, it is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain is a four-wheel drive to stay true to the brand’s commitment towards off-roading and the car does live up to that expectation as well. On top of this, it offers a class-leading towing capacity of 9000 pounds, which hardly sounds believable for a luxury SUV. It has very good acceleration and goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds and will go on to complete the quarter-mile in just 13.2 seconds, which is hardly believable for something this big and heavy.

But on top of this, it also has excellent road manners, which is the reason why you would buy the Sport version. The steering is extremely precise and direct and weighs up very well. The car remains composed even in tight corners. The ride quality is excellent and will keep you isolated from any road bump. You also get an adaptive air suspension that can absorb any shock from the road with ease. There is a lot of clever technology in this car to keep you glued to the road and it does do that job beautifully. Overall, you will get everything you wanted and then some more in this car.

In terms of performance, this category is filled with cars that redefined that aspect for midsize luxury SUVs. Both the BMW X6 and Audi Q7 have better acceleration figures. In terms of price, the Audi Q7 is one such car that is much cheaper, although you can argue that the car is also a bit old now. However, if you are after the sportiest car out of this bunch, that would be the Porsche Cayenne, without a doubt. That car is definitely the most capable handler. But no other car in this category has the kind of strength off-road as the Range Rover. Hence, even in terms of performance, the Range Rover Sport is a leader in its own way.

The problem with having luxury SUVs with very capable engines is that they will never be fuel-efficient. This would be the case for the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport as the EPA estimates 17 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway, which is a bit on the lower side even for a 3L V6 engine. And the car returns you only 19 MPG in the combined cycle, which means that driving it around will be an expensive affair. However, one thing the brand has done really well is that it has a fuel tank capacity of 27.6 gallons, and this gets you a decent range of 469 miles in the city and 634 miles on the highway.

We definitely have to give it for the Audi, which manages to plonk in a 2 L four-cylinder and still have good acceleration. This proves to be an excellent choice as the SUV has class-leading figures despite having a smaller fuel tank. The Cayenne and BMW X6 are somewhat similar if you look at their figures, but the Porsche has a larger tank. The Range Rover has the worst fuel efficiency figures in this class, but it has the largest tank in this class at 27.6-gallons. This gives it a class-leading range. Therefore, it is hard to argue that fuel efficiency is a weak point for this car.

Interior

Although it competes against cars with excellent interiors, it is hard to miss how good the material quality of the Land Rover this. Although all of its German rivals have excellent interiors as well, this car simply has something that is one notch above the rest. In terms of seating capacity, you can also have this car with a seven-seater variant. Although the third row is only suitable for kids, it still is an option that makes the car incredibly practical. There are beautiful wood and metal inlays as well as top-notch plastics in this car.

The ergonomics make it feel much less of an SUV while its capabilities argue otherwise. The car has average cargo space considering its size, measuring just 27.5 ft.³. If you equip the third-row seats, however, then completely forget about cargo space. There is a good amount of technology inside the car as well, which makes it a properly well-equipped luxury car. The convenience features list is very long and can keep you properly pampered inside the SUV. Its interiors manage to cocoon you even when you’re traversing the harshest terrain.

The Audi Q7 has another trump card in its pocket as it seats seven by default and is fairly comfortable doing so. The Range Rover also has this option but the seats are a bit more cramped than they are in the Audi. The Range Rover Sport offers the highest cargo space in the segment and can make room for more cargo with folded-down seats. Like we have mentioned, the material quality is definitely better in the Range Rover and we also feel that the layout is slightly better with this car. The main interior features of the SUV include:

How intuitive is the infotainment system in the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

The infotainment system is a brand-new InControl smartphone integration app. It sports an 8-inch touchscreen that has simple graphics. However, it is not the best smartphone integration software or the most intuitive system that we have around. It is sometimes slow to respond and can definitely use an upgrade. However, one of the things it has got going for itself is that the sound system is great. If you still feel like you need more, you can equip the 23 speaker Meridian audio system. The standout infotainment features of the Range Rover’s infotainment system include:

  • USB, iPod, and auxiliary audio

The exterior styling of the Range Rover Sport is truly something to look at. It blends the most purposeful British design and has incredibly beautiful details that stand out It is one of the only SUVs that still has a ruggedness in its design while being elegant. Every angle of this car is very beautiful and the proportions are just bang-on. It is also offered in a wide range of colors and the finishes making it a truly exciting car. Although it is very heavy at 4727 pounds, it does not feel that bulky in terms of the design. We feel that it can attract buyers through this.

The Audi Q7 is the largest measuring 199 inches in length, while the Porsche Cayenne is the widest at 78.7 inches in width. This also explains why the Audi is very spacious even in the third row. It might have small faults here and there, but overall, this is one of the most desirable cars in the world.
