Land Rover has been updating its entire lineup with a generation update to make it sustainable for the electrified future by underpinning it with their new MLA and EMA platforms, but that is not the case with the 2022 Range Rover Sport. The 2022 Range Rover Sport gets only minor changes except for the limited powertrain options this year as JLR is moving towards platforms that can underpin both internal combustion and electric powertrains with Land Rover developing their own platforms and not relying on Jaguar for the same.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

With an eye on the future, Land Rover has decided to stop offering the plug-in hybrid and diesel powertrains this year, and we expect the new second-generation update to be followed next year after being in production since 2014. It continues to offer impressive performance, luxurious & feature-loaded cabin while offering stand-out off-road capabilities. At a starting price of $70,850, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport competes against the more popular Germans like the Audi Q8, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and the Porsche Cayenne

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Features

Land Rover offers the Range Rover Sport loaded with features to the brim right from the base SE trim as is the trend of this segment, to justify the high asking price. The HSE Silver Edition trim adds more convenience and technology to the mix, while the top-of-the-line HST trim features a more powerful engine along with a more premium cabin upholstery at an MSRP of $85,350. Many of the features are available as options, and one needs to shell out more money to completely enjoy the premium appeal of this Land Rover.

We Recommend

Although the base SE trim is pretty much loaded with most features that one might need, we recommend to opt for the HSE Silver Edition trim, which although costs more, adds quite a few creature comforts and driver aids. The performance from the base engine is pretty solid and hence the higher trim does not feel worth the upgrade.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Release Date

Land Rover has not confirmed the availability dates of the 2022 Range Rover Sport but bookings have already begun and one can expect the deliveries to begin this summer.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Engine and Performance

The 2022 model year sees the omission of the PHEV and diesel models from the Range Rover Sport lineup, and Land Rover only offers a single 3.0-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid powertrain in two states of tune. The base variant generates 355 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque, while the HST trim gets a bump to 395 hp and 406 lb-ft. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the permanent 4-wheel drive is standard across the range.

The performance from this large SUV is pretty competent as it manages a 0-60 mph run in 6.2 seconds while covering the quarter-mile distance in over 14 seconds. Add to that the impressive towing capacity of over 7,700 lbs, and the Range Rover Sport becomes a potent machine both on the tarmac and off it. The more powerful version speeds to 60 mph in an impressive 5.6 seconds from a standstill.

The high asking price of the Range Rover Sport feels even more when comparing the acceleration performance and towing capabilities of its rivals. It is slower than its peers and offers a tugging prowess on par with the segment, although the off-road capabilities are the best in the segment. The Mercedes GLE is the most affordable and quickest SUV here, while the Audi Q8 matches its performance to the GLE but is priced similar to the Land Rover. The lack of grunt from the Cayenne can be felt as it is half a second slower than the other two Germans.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Fuel Economy

With mild-hybrid technology being incorporated into the Range Rover Sport, one might expect considerably higher fuel efficiency ratings, but that is not the case. The EPA-rated fuel economy of 21 mpg for combined city and highway driving is just on par with the segment. Although, the large 27.6-gallon fuel tank offers an impressive and class-leading driving range of over 500 miles no matter the driving conditions.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 is the most frugal of the lot, but the smaller gas tank limits its driving range to a certain extent. The Audi Q8 and the Porsche Cayenne have identical fuel economy ratings, but the larger fuel tank capacity on offer by Porsche aids it in offering a superior driving range, although it is well shorter than the GLE and miles behind the Range Rover Sport.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Interior

The cabin of the Range Rover Sport feels modern and upmarket with clean design and premium materials and no compromise on the build quality. The abundant dab of leather and wooden inlays looks tasteful and classy, while the feature-rich nature and abundant amount of technology on offer make it look upto date with modern-day standards.

In terms of space, there is ample space on offer in both the rows of seats available as standard, while there is also an option to opt for a third row which increases the occupant count to 7. That being said, the third row feels very cramped, and it's best to not opt for it. The seats are well-bolstered and feel comfortable but the thick side bolsters might be an issue for people with large body frames.

The luggage space at the back is limited to 27.5 cu-ft, which can be maxed out to just 62.2 cu-ft by folding down the rear seat. In comparison, the rivals offer more space both for the passengers and their cargo. The GLE 450 feels the most spacious in this regard, while the Audi Q8 is a close second. The Cayenne, on the other hand, has a similarly sized cabin like that of the Range Rover Sport. Major interior features include:

  • 16-Way adjustable Bucket Front Seats w/4-way power lumbar
  • Heated/Cooled HST Front Seats w/Memory
  • 60-40 Folding Split-Bench Heated Manual Reclining Fold Forward Rear Seat w/Manual Fore/Aft

  • Three-zone Automatic Climate Control w/Separate Rear Seat Controls
  • Memory Settings for Door Mirrors, Steering Wheel, and Head Restraints
  • HomeLink Garage Door Transmitter

How intuitive is the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport’s infotainment unit?

The dual 10-inch Touch Pro Duo touchscreen panels positioned at the center of the dashboard one below the other look very futuristic and are very convenient to use on paper. That’s because one can set the navigation course on the top screen while utilizing the lower one for controlling the cabin functions, but it isn’t the most intuitive system and needs fiddling around a bit which becomes difficult while driving the SUV.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument panel is also very sharp and striking to look at and makes the high price worth spending for. If all these high-resolution screens weren’t enough for you, Land Rover also offers a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system with an option to choose between an 8-inch or 10-inch setup for an additional cost. The base audio system does pretty well, but the 19-speaker Meridian and the $4,500 optional 23-speaker Meridian surround sound systems are a class apart. Major infotainment features include:

  • 10.0-inch Touch Pro Duo touchscreen infotainment system
  • 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster
  • 19-speaker 825W Meridian Surround Sound System
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • InControl Remote & Protect and InControl Pro services
  • 4G WiFi hotspot
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming
  • Integrated Navigation System w/Voice Activation and Real-Time Traffic Display

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Exterior

The modern and sleek approach towards styling can also be seen with the exterior of the Range Rover Sport. The LED headlights and taillights, follow-me-home lighting, panoramic sunroof, and standard 19-inch wheels all look striking and premium. Higher trims are offered with larger 21-inch wheels, while the standard powered tailgate sees an upgrade to a powered gesture tailgate.

The standard 8.4-inch of ground clearance can further be increased to a maximum of 10.9-inch when venturing into the unknown. The Audi Q8, on the other hand, is a more urban SUV and has a very low ride height. The Mercedes and Cayenne are also too sophisticated to take on the dirt and ridges. The Q8 also weighs the least, while the Range Rover Sport is the heaviest which could be a concern in tricky off-road situations. Standout exterior features include:

  • Automatic Projector Beam LED Auto-Leveling, Auto High-Beam, Daytime Running Lights, Preference Setting Headlamps w/Washer
  • LED Brakelights
  • Perimeter/Approach Lights and Front & Rear Fog Lamps
  • Power Liftgate and Wing Spoiler
  • Speed Sensitive Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers
  • Power Heated Side Mirrors w/Tilt Down function, Driver Auto Dimming, Power Folding, and Turn Signal Indicator
  • Sliding Panoramic Roof
  • 21-inch 9-Spoke Gloss Black Alloy Wheels

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Safety

As is the case with most premium high value and low sales volume vehicles, the Range Rover Sport hasn’t yet been tested by either of the private or government safety testing agencies. Though there are plenty of safety features and driving aids on offer that not only make driving this large SUV a tad bit easier on the road but also aids in maneuvering it off the road with plenty of technology on offer. A highlight of the available safety features is given below:

  • Terrain Response Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • InControl Protect Emergency SOS
  • Emergency Braking and Rear Traffic Monitor
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning
  • 360 Parking Aid w/Front And Rear Parking Sensors and Back-Up Camera

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Competition

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs Audi Q8

Though the prices of both these SUVs are pretty similar to one another, they are very different in nature. The Audi Q8 is more sophisticated, sporty, and enthusiastic to drive, while the Range Rover Sport is a comfortable family cruiser that can venture outside the city and into the unknown. The Q8 offers more space on the inside while the Land Rover has marginally better fuel efficiency with a larger gas tank aiding in long-distance driving. It is a matter of personal choice and the winner depends on what you want out of your premium SUV.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs Mercedes-Benz GLE 450

One of the rare instances where a Mercedes is one of the most affordable SUVs of the segment, the GLE offers immense value to its buyers. Not only does the GLE offer impressive acceleration and towing capabilities, but it is also very frugal and will save you loads of money on gas bills. It offers a premium and spacious cabin loaded with plenty of safety and technology while also managing to take on some light off-roading. Therefore, amongst the two, the Mercedes GLE-Class makes for a better buying option unless you really want to get down and going in the dirt.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs Porsche Cayenne

The Porsche Cayenne is one of the sportier SUVs of the segment as opposed to the off-road capable nature of the Range Rover Sport. Other than that, both these SUVs are very evenly matched as both offer similar acceleration and towing performance with very little difference between their fuel efficiencies. The cabin is also similarly sized with plenty of technology and creature comforts on offer. But since the Land Rover has impressive capabilities to take any terrain which is a major requirement from an SUV, we believe the Range Rover Sport is worth the minor additional cost.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Final Verdict

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport has all its bases covered even when it is at the end of its life cycle. With the powertrain packing in enough grunt and the chassis offering enough capabilities, one can never feel disappointed with this SUV. Although better frugality and a larger trunk could sweeten the deal even further, we aren’t complaining much. With the new generation just about a year away, one might want to wait for it, and although that is justified, the current generation 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is absolutely worth the deal as well.
