Slotting in between the standard Range Rover and the Velar, the Sport is the ideal size for an SUV, offering comfortable seating for five passengers and almost all the traits of its bigger sibling including the capable off-road system. However, the Sport tag makes it more fun on the tarmac, especially when equipped with the flagship 5L supercharged V-8. While it gets a 5-seater configuration as standard, Land Rover also offers a third row of seats if required.

The mid-size SUV segment includes the usual rivals like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Porsche Cayenne, and the new Genesis GV80. As usual, prices for the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport are on the higher side, starting at $72,250 for the base SE model. With some options, higher trim levels can scrape the $100,000 mark, making it one of the most expensive options in the segment.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Interior Design, Dimensions, and Comfort

Land Rover has gone for an elegant and minimalistic approach with the interiors, much like its stablemates. Two touchscreen displays are used to control most of the vehicle functions with a floating center console design. Depending on the trim level, there is a multitude of color options to choose from including carbon fiber trims on the range-topping models. Wood and leather cover most areas with excellent build quality throughout.

All trim levels are also well equipped with all the latest creature comforts and features befitting the Range Rover nameplate. While it gets a 5 seater configuration as standard, there is a third-row seat on offer to seat two extra passengers.

The dashboard design still looks modern and contemporary with just the right blend of soft-touch materials, wood and leather surfaces. With multiple layers, the climate vents are neatly secluded at the top, above the well-integrated infotainment display. The secondary touchscreen display sits below it on a separate section with two dials for easier access.

There is almost no switchgear on offer, making it harder to access vehicle functions and features. Fortunately, a traditional gear lever is provided with off-road controls and drive mode selectors near it. The cupholders are neatly secluded near the gear console with a sliding lid. Higher trims get a refrigerated center console that runs deep with a comfortable armrest above it.

The front seats are ideal for spending long hours, offering plenty of support and comfort. The high seating position gives an unobstructed view ahead and all the controls are placed ergonomically, although you have to take your eyes off the road to operate the touchscreen system. Power-adjustable front seats are included as standard, with heating and ventilation functions reserved for the higher trims.

The rear seats are just as comfortable as the front with good cushioning and bolster. Headroom and knee room are excellent even for taller passengers and three adults can easily fit in a row. However, the side bolstering may be too aggressive for larger adults. Headrests and three-point seatbelts are provided for all three passengers.

To seat two additional passengers, a third row is available as an option. But, the seats are very restrictive even for smaller adults. It's best to consider the Range Rover Sport as a 5-seater and look for other options if you're planning to ferry around more passengers.

To reduce fatigue, both rows get a center armrest with cupholders. The standard dual-zone automatic climate control system also keeps the cabin cool with separate vents for the rear passengers. Going up the range will include a more advanced three-zone system along with a large panoramic sunroof.

As with all mid-size luxury SUVs, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport offers identical space to most of its rivals, although it can't quite match the new Genesis GV80. Interior quality and materials used are also impressive and match segment leaders like the expensive Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Infotainment

With the usual Touch Pro Duo interface found in all Land Rover offerings, the 10-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system on the Range Rover Sport is easy to use with all the latest feature inclusions like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, built-in navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD radio and a 250-Watt 8-speaker audio system as standard. A secondary 10-inch display is also provided for controlling most of the other functions.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Cargo Capacity

While it can't quite match its rivals, the Range Rover Sport offers adequate space at 27.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Folding the rear seats in a 60/40-split-folding configuration will maximize capacity to 62.2 cubic feet.

While the specs might seem lacking compared to rivals, the cargo space is well designed for easy loading and access. All trim levels also get a powered liftgate for added convenience.

Although the boxy proportions make it look practical, the Range Rover Sport can’t match Genesis GV80 and BMW X5 in terms of practicality regardless of seat configuration. The Porsche Cayenne comes in last, almost matching the Range Rover Sport.

Addtional Interior Storage Spaces

The Range Rover Sport continues to be one of the more practical options in its class, offering a lot of cleverly hidden spaces around its modern and futuristic cabin. Two gloveboxes, cupholders in both rows, and even a cooled center console storage are available.

The door pockets are also spacious with bottle holders along with seatback pockets. Both the front and rear passengers also get smartphone holders in the middle with conveniently placed charging ports.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Creature Comforts

As with all Land Rover offerings, the Range Rover Sport is well equipped right from the base model with features like a powered liftgate, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a digital instrument cluster.

The HSE Silver Edition also adds a panoramic sunroof, upgraded front seats with heating and ventilation, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, a refrigerator inside the front console, four-zone automatic climate control, and more. For some sportier additions, the HST model includes aluminum interior trim pieces and leather/simulated suede upholstery.

The HSE Dynamic model almost mirrors the Silver Edition with some feature omissions, while the range-topping Autobiography trim adds upgraded front seats and soft-close doors. Going with the sporty theme, the SVR model is an upgrade over the Autobiography with sporty bucket seats at the front and a sport steering wheel.

Verdict

While it can’t quite match the standard Range Rover that redefined the luxury SUV, the Range Rover Sport makes a good case for itself as a more compact and dynamically impressive alternative. All the usual Land Rover traits like a modern and comfortable cabin filled with all the latest features, supportive seats in both rows, and an impressive trunk make an appearance. Overall, if you want a modern SUV that's capable both on and off the road, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a competent package.
